This game as so much potential to be amazing. The concept is very intriguing... you wake up naked on a beach, you have a rock, a torch, now go survive!

Pros: Concept, gameplay can be solo or coop, variety of maps & sever types.
Cons: Optimization is horrid - graphics are laggy, twitchy etc. Every "update" seems to negatively impact the game from a performance standpoint.

The game itself is not bad its early so there are still bugs galore, but its playable what makes me rate it down is the amount of hackers, the way the community has geared themselves towards playing, the community in general, the general design and game play philosophy and the maps.

Hackers - Everywhere way too many of them, if you want to avoid them play on private servers, Facepunch official servers are full of them. Rustified servers are better as the requirements to join are much more strict (no VAC bans period)

Community gameplay - The idea is sound you have 2 clans building bases and you must attack theirs while defending yours, sounds good, but what actually happens is no one attacks anyone until they are offline. The majority if not all of the game time involving other players bases is done when they are offline, and likewise you will not see a single person near your base while you are online but u can almost guarantee that they will raid once you log off. They need some server option for offline protection possibly based around cabinet authorisation etc to provide protection to empty bases.

Community as a whole - awful, just awful, 100% awful. The community takes so much enjoyment out of the game by doing everything in its power to make your gaming experience as miserable as possible. They gloat, they insult, they camp your base effectively trapping you inside for no gain for themselves, they kill new players all the time. The community of this game is literally there to suck all the fun out of it for everyone but themselves. Solo players in particular will find the game to be unplayable and I would urge you not to even consider playing until you have 6+ players in your team. Trying to find a team to join is equally pointless, they will rather shoot you and steal your rock than engage in conversation.

The Maps - Too small basically, even the largest maps at the end of the server cycle look like housing estates. Trying to build a hidden base is worthless because the maps are so small, this ties into the fact that clans dominate the map after around 5 hours so anyone else trying to build a base is out of luck. Larger maps giving more room for players to build is something the game must add which would also help alleviate the clan domination problem by not having every base in reach of a clan HQ.

Gameplay and design - The game is designed to (and does) heavily favour sad no life clans who can spend 10 hours a day on the game. If you have a job, if you have a life, if you have anything that would prevent you from playing each day everyday for hours on end then simply avoid this game. Without server options for more casual play the only people who get anywhere are the 24/7 clans. For people with other commitments like myself its just not viable to play the game.

OK, this is an alpha, so we shouldn't expect too much as far as appearances, gameplay, etc. HOWEVER, it would be nice if it were actually possible to find resources (e.g., minerals or rocks) in the vicinity of all of the damned rocky hills in the area. The game clearly needs a lot of work, so it's probably worth waiting a month or so at least before trying it out. The community seems to be mixed between friendlies (the first guy I met gave me a pair of pants!!!), and homicidal maniacs (last guy I met hit me with an axe while I was running around at night, causing me to bleed to death shortly after). I think the develop might want to think about possible incentives/disincentives for players not to immediately slaughter newbies when the game is finalized... Expand

-Also the lag, buggy mess when more then a few online players are around you...you go to battle 3 vs 3 or more...prepare for frustrations and alot of lag. That and waking up naked on the beach/in your safe house (if its still standing) bc of said lag and bugs.

    The Ugly:
Still after YEARS an "early release game" and labeled as Alpha. They're not going to ever finish this game are they....just keep the thing in alpha stage with buggy messes all over to ensure they never have to have a finished polished project. Lame alpha/early release games left n right showing up all over the place. BOYCOTT them, this mess as got to stop...first you work on a product, polish it up, finish it, then sell it. But oh wait not anymore...now they want paid before they even finish a polished project and alot of them just take the money and run after sales drop...disgusting business practice. Steer clear of alpha/early release games...make these "developers" work before they're paid.

It's a fun game and it has a huge amount of potential however in it's current state it is extremely buggy, extremely laggy on nearly every server I've played it on and ultimately it appears to have some serious networking problems and/or memory leaks server-side because none of the servers that I have played on have been able to handle a continuous play session of too long...and coming back day after day just has some serious pains with making it even slower.

The boars, chickens and deer start to "skip". Other players start to "skip". Zombies "skip".

It's not all entirely bad - I've had a huge amount of fun with this already however I do have some long term concerns:
    - I'm concerned that they may not be able to weed out all of the hacking that really affects the fun in the game.
    - Will they be able to create a stable bit of server software that is rock-sold to allow for weeks and weeks of server time without requiring a new map to be created (effectively scrapping any progress you may have made).
    - Is their vision perhaps focused a little too much on putting their/the communities ideas into place without maybe taking a step back now (before it's too late) to rather re-engineer parts of the game that are just too week at this point in time (sometimes you just can't fix something if it has a crappy foundation).

Either way I really do hope that they can pull it off - it has so much potential:
-I dream of PVE day-time servers with PVP night-times (or mixes of the two). The worst thing about this game is starting fresh on a server only to be hacked for your med-kit and torch on sight.
-The ideas I have of custom servers and the potential of mods to really blow this out of the water are just awesome - let us hope that they focus more on the securing the game from hackers and allowing some really awesome modding functionality in the long term for where they will inevitably fall short.
-My imagination runs wild with the crafting possibilities in something that doesn't look as ugly as Minecraft does...has a little more of a "I'm in real danger now" feeling to it too.

TL:DR Lots of fun but sadly just not worth investing too much time into right now and after several days of play time all I can say is that you should give it at least a few months before even looking into it. I do plan to update this again as they progress though...so here's holding thumbs!

Now if you're bored and you want to try something new (knowing that your progress will be reset and that these guys are at least 6 months away from something stable if it comes - well in my opinion) then give it a go. Personally I'd have preferred a $9.99 entry point in it's current state...but yeah early access is "the thing" so what can we do?

Massive amounts of potential but is in dire need of balancing. Too much offense, no way to defend or deter attacks when offline. Explosives are too easy to craft and hoard so the haves simply farm the have-nots until they quit.

Lots of security holes for hackers, lots of trolling and griefing.

Starting out with a rock, a torch, and a respectably-large open world, players are pitched against nature and one another in an endless contest to survive—pants optional. Fair warning: savable progress is not a feature. In the likelihood that you find yourself on the wrong end of a gun or mauled by radioactive bears, let's just say I hope you weren't carrying anything valuable. Now, onto the review.

Without a doubt, the allure of multiplayer survival feeds on human interaction. Encounters in Rust are, for lack of a better word, exhilarating. Will this stranger kill you and dash away hours of scavenging for hard-earned gear? Or will he fall to your gun, doubling your day's bounty as you loot his limp corpse? Perhaps he doesn't want to fight, and will just leave you in peace. Or maybe, just maybe, he'll reach out to you, and as partners you'll conquer more than you could possibly imagine. The thrill of running into (or trying to avoid) other players is not easily replicated; it's something you'd have to experience for yourself.

The survival-themed features of this game match its straightforward playstyle and down-to-earth feel. The items you gather can be used to craft shelter, armor and weapons, as well as food and medical supplies. Status effects are self-explanatory. If you're not wearing clothes at night, you become cold and burn calories quicker; if you take damage, you have a chance to bleed and lose more health over time. Most "man-made" structures (those not built by players but occurring naturally on the map) contain valuables but are guarded by radiation, indicated by a meter next to your health bar and a distinct Geiger counter sound; irradiated players die quickly. Crafting and construction makes Minecraft look difficult. The rudimentary characteristics make it easy to understand from the get-go, though this may prove disappointing for those seeking depth in a game.

Where Rust deserves criticism is in its inability to distinguish itself from its most similar competitor, DayZ., which boasts a greater world depth, crafting variety, and polished appearance. At just $10 less, I couldn't recommend going for a straight downgrade. I am worried that Rust was released too soon, and by the time the finished product is ready, people will have already lost interest. While many of us early adopters may appreciate its minimalist approach, things will have to change to keep it from growing stale over the coming months and years.

The game is remarkably well-optimized in terms of file space, taking up just 1.7 GB; however, a look at the graphics and you'll understand why. The options menu provides very little control over how your game looks, giving you a sliding bar for "render quality" and checkboxes for water reflections and VSync. Even at maximum quality, sharp polygon edges and reused textures are everywhere. There is a noticeable draw distance whenever you approach mountains or rocks from far away, and up close the object borders suffer from a real lack of antialiasing. DayZ looks comparatively beautiful. That being said, Rust will definitely play on setups that can't handle the former.

For $20, Rust is a hell of a ride. It is a fine break from the overwhelming complexity of AAA titles, and reminds players like me why we love gaming in the first place. The experience only gets better with friends playing. But for this game to become anything more than a flash in the pan, it will need to become something that sets itself aside from the now-better competition.

It's got your average survival progression: start with nothing, get wood, get resources, build a base, protect yourself. However, there are some fairly unique elements in play. For instance, airdrops. Every few in game days a plane will fly over head, dropping crates of goodies for anyone willing to grab it. It can bring tons of people towards a single location and can create thrilling and exciting firefights over some loot. Raiding is fun as well. Blowing up a person's wall and stealing their stuff can be very satisfying. Rad towns also add a new level of play, as they require you to essentially put yourself in harms way to get any loot. This mechanic can be annoying at times, but it can still be enjoyable. The community is divided, however. Some will want to find friends to work together with and build a huge city. Some, however, will prefer to work alone and kill as many people as they can see. I think this is great. It forces you to decide who to trust and how to plan out your attacks.

it has some flaws, however, such as the difficulty of actually getting anywhere. A lot of the time you'll spend hours gathering resources and collecting loot, only to be shot by a random player so they can take all your hard earned loot. It can also be riddled with hackers at times, and this can make the game very frustrating. It's also not very singleplayer friendly, as without a group you're basically defenseless.

Overall, I'd give this game a 7/10. It's unique and fun but can be irritating. It is definitely a game that you will unintentionally log a lot of hours into.

Rust has potential to be one of the BEST games out there, and I have high hopes it one day will be. But for now Facepunch is doing there best to develop the game and it is in early access. Yes, there are glitches. Yes, all your favorite game features aren't implemented yet, but one day when the game is finished I will gladly give Rust and 10.

Rust is a first person survival game that pits you on an island with you schlong in the wind and a rock in your hands. I had a great time with this game at first. Mining, Chopping and even building. Then I found another player. I was so happy at first, i came up to them holding a torch since it's the 'international sign of piece'. I started jumping and getting happy. Then I pressed Push-to-talk down and saif "Hi". He said nothing... instead, he beared hsi rock at me and started hacking away. I was asking him what he was doing but all that I got in return was another hack in the back. But unlike Day-Z were the combat is polished enough and you can get geared up fast enough to warrant bandits fighting you being fun, early game rock fights just feel like a "ohhhhh MY GOD WTF". This is also the case because most of the time whoever gets first hit wins. This game is great, awesome concept BUT IT NEEDS TO BE REMODDLED. Seriously put consequences into killing people with melee weapons. I say if you try to kill with a melee weapon you should get fatigue or something idk but this early game rock **** is holding the REALLY AWESOME and fun late game back. Great game, needs polish and atm i would recommend buying it as there is a remodel being undertaken.

Being a new player (solo) going to a populated server be prepared for a lot of frustration (highly likely to be picked on - hard..). The game has reverted back to a system where you have to learn how to make virtually everything, making going solo even for experienced players extremely difficult. Offline raiding the norm with lots of players that seem to have nothing better to do with their time. Game can easily turn into a time 'black hole' trying to keep ahead of raiders. Having to get authorization for every trap in friends base (and living in a time zone 8 hrs. different than most friends - like me) can be a nightmare. Visually & functionally the game is quite good, unfortunately many of the players make it not worth the effort. As a survival, Rust has this very unique concept that mixes farming, base building and defense, finding food, building guns, and using them to kill rivals on the same server as you. Farming is definitely not my cup of tea, but it is necessary to access the other, much more entertaining aspects of the game. What is wonderful about Rust is the size of the maps, whole worlds where you can try to hide or, on the opposite side, to build gigantic bases to mark your territory and dare others to try and contest it. In this sense, Rust gives all its flavour when, after hours of grinding and crafting, you can defeat an opponent trying to raid you, or better, achieve a successful raid yourself.

Unfortunately, reaching this point will be highly dependent on the server where you play, and the luck you have not to cross the path of already well-installed players on the server. Because in my opinion, Rust has one major flaw: it is deeply anti-noob. I don't know any other game that is so hostile and not welcoming towards new players, and this is inherent to the mechanics of the game itself: when you start on a new server, you start with nothing. If other players have played 20 hours on this server, they already have a base, good weapons, and if they happen to find you they will just kill you, even if you're a harmless, naked peon. And don't count on other players' mercy: kills don't happen every minute in the game, so if you are found in the nature, it's too appealing to kill you.

So as a new player, you will be killed all the time, either resetting your progress on the server, or "just" drastically reducing its speed, if you were lucky enough to manage to store a few things in a safe place that you can reach back, before dying. And this pinnacle of the snowball effect is part of the core mechanics of the game: the newer you are, the least likely you are to make progress. This principle is against my concept of games. I am not saying people cannot enjoy Rust. If you are a highly competitive person and willing to endure hours of frustration before reaching the core of enjoyment of the game, you can go ahead. But on top of that, remember this is a persistent environment game, meaning you can lose everything you have even when you don't play.

Rust is a game that you should play all the time, or never. As someone who enjoys playing different games and my personal life, I have made my decision between the two.

игра объективно идеальна во всем, кроме последних обновлений, которые превращают игру в рпггейшутер

It's a good idea, the implementation seems to be also good, but here the survival is 40%, everything behind the scenes is pvp. You need to train your shooting skills, reaction and know everything about the game.

the community is very toxic, the gameplay is very luck based and the loading times are very long. Aside from that the game is fun its best if you play with friends

i been waiting for console version ever since then

Killing new people and players is low: when you tell them you friendly they either dont listen or they deaf.
Stealing people hardwork loot is really low; my stuff got stolen 4 times, i worked so hard getting it
most of the time i more scared to come to a person to ask for anything to trade, help, or give why? because they can easy betray you or anything.
There barely any weapons, food, loot, etc to get: its really low to get items I couldn't find a way to get cloth for sleeping bag so i can respawn to my house instead of the beach, there barely any cars and almost every area i been to is either too cold, or radiation or i get hit by scientists.
Crashes, or bugs, plus older version of rust????, i didn't know it is old version of rust but i hearing they updating it soon
this game will make you rage depending on how much you loot, how much you earned it kinda sad they cant make where it free type i seen more survival games allow solo modes where you can explore freely with no people, or custom games

Toxic playerbase, alot of grinding, lag and poor performance, aimbot and other ingame modifications. The survival aspect is too easy without other players.

still good game, when you run around the isle, and killing people by big rock, seems like this game was created by good creators, thanks.

Rust isn't optimized that well either it can take a long time to load into a sever, even taking hours sometimes. And it can lag a lot even on low settings. Though I'd say that depends on your Pc. Overall I can say Rust is decent at best yet I can't recommend it in its current state. Expand

Very fun to play on 5x or 10x servers, but DO NOT play vanilla, because you will instantly ruin the fun for yourself.

PvP-heavy survival game for gamers resistant to frustration, with weaknesses in construction and discovery.

For competitive players who want a mix of survival and crafting, Rust is the best there is; for everyone else, there are plenty of other games.
