It is a huge game with loads of missions and cool characters, The only thing I can advise you before starting to go deep inside the main story (go to Fog Island and get the Legendary Item that you can find there!) - 8/10

This game is a meh. I couldnt finish it because of very often stupid dialoagues and characters. Really a disappointment from the studio that made Gothic, one of the best games ever.

I liked this game, I found it fun. Just like with other PB games, you feel so weak and combat is terrible but feels easy as you progress.
Dislike how brief the ending was, feels like if you blink you'll miss it.
If you like PB games you'll probably like this one as well.

This game is like Wine it gets better with age. I remember back at its release I found it lazy because the islands are ripped off from Risen 2. Now I do not remember anything from Risen 2 so Risen 3 is the superior Version.

While it is certainly not the best RPG I have played it holds up quite well and offers some enjoyable moments and some unforgettable gameplay. It's combat is clunky and it's characters have little more personality than a rock, but other gameplay elements and it's underlying story make this game a good pick up when you can grab it on sale. It's a good game to add to any RPG fans library.

Risen 3 is Risen 2 with some upgrades, nothing more. I'm long-time fan of Piranha Bytes but I couldn't force myself to enjoy this game, no matter how hard I tried.

Story is incredibly stupid, dull, crappy - probably someone thought that more fantasy clichés = better fantasy story. Quests are mostly about fetching stuff and only 2-5 quests in the entire game feel at least a little bit original. Combat was improved over Risen 2 but enemies still stun you very often and 99 % of fights have the same style: roll, attack, roll, attack, roll, ... Frustrating.

Voice acting is horrible, soundtrack is forgettable and graphics looks plastic and cheap. World is a little bit more open than in Risen 2, but it's still mostly corridors.

Skip Risen 3, you won't miss anything. And if you want to finish Risen series, prepare that this game will torture you with it's immense stupidity.

If I wanted a game like the other games ... I would play them instead. The point of a sequel is to IMPROVE. Risen 3's combat is awful and it's awful for a single reason that could have been patched out. Your character INSISTS on twirling like a ballerina at her first recital FOR EVERY SWING. This isn't how a sword fight works. This isn't how it should play. The fact that a swing takes three+ seconds to come out is completely stupid, especially when enemy attacks are instant and sometimes drag the creatures across several feet of ground to hit you. It feels like they wanted to mix turn based combat and real time combat, but kept the worst of both. And dodge rolls don't always save you. I have been hit out of so many "dodges" AWAY from enemies because the game teleports them to me. On top of this, the most common healing item is a VERY SLOW regen. I don't mind that, except it should actually be useful. Just make it heal ... three times faster when I'm not in combat. That way I can heal without standing in a field FOR FIVE MINUTES while I wait to recover. I'm not kidding, it's too slow. You're better off just drinking alcohol (potions), except they cost a lot more money, are hard to find in the wild, and are better saved for the middle of a fight.

So, combat boils down to using a companion to distract the thing you want to kill, hitting it in the back til it dies, then standing about while you eat a sandwich to recover HP at a rate of 1 point per 2 seconds, and then going to the next fight. This doesn't sound bad, until you realize that it makes playing without the AI impossible if you come across more than 2 enemies of any type, and fights drag on for 10+ minutes until you get overpowered via spells. There's literally one build that makes you essentially invincible for the whole game.

Everything else, the graphics (passable), the story (passable), the voice acting (cheesy), the world (interesting) works very well. I enjoy the game for the most part, but the combat is a chore that doesn't get any better until you get powerful enough to essentially skip it. And that's not good in a game where combat is a majority of your time spent playing.

It is a decent successor to Risen 2 and returns the magic that was present in the original Risen. I like the open world and the story, but the combat is suboptimal. I had an enjoyable 50 hours in this sequel.

Combat tries to be Witcher-like but comes off Witcher-lite, move sets are limited and dodging/rolling is haphazard at best.

I stopped playing after the 10th time falling off an edge due to the weird amount of momentum your character has, in fact, most movement feels a lot like your character is 3 times a heavy as any other model in the game.

Essentially, Gothic 1 was great *at the time* - every game by this company since has had this weird 'stuck in 2002' feel to it, So much so the fan base for this company even admit to being 'cult'.

Risen 3 is no comparison to The Witcher 3.

The developers made a huge mistake with the intorduction of the game. It forces you into the pirate theme, they drop you into action in a linear introductory story immediately without properly explaining fighting and the possibilitea to improve it, and it does not show you the depth and beautiy of the game in the first hours. HUGE DESIGN MISTAKE! Because the game itself is really good once you manage to develope your skills and understand the Gothic like game system. If the game started on Calador with a more like medieval theme and more armor and clothes customization with a better stoury indroduction the Game would have gotten better scores. I wish they made another real Gothic like RPG with a classic orc-human-monsters fantasy based world with this or better graphics, AAA voice acting Gothic 3 sized world.... Witcher 3 is not even close to this in terms of exploration/rewarding system, game mechanics.

For me personally, if graphics are not so bad they interfere with game play, then I don't care about them. For people comparing this to other RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins, I have played several of these to completion, and Risen 3 is among my favorites. The combat is actually better than games like the Elder Scrolls, where you mash buttons until someone falls, or throw in a spell. Here, you have to time your attacks and block when necessary, especially if you get the riposte ability, which I assume a lot of you haters didn't even get far enough to unlock. If you mash the attack button, your attacks are waaaay slower, so try timing them one after the other. And the voice acting? If it bothers you so much because you need something to whine about, then toggle something called "subtitles" to on and mute your computer. Because if the dialogue is horrendous, you can easily just read along instead. When people complain about pirate games, I don't understand why. I loved Risen, Risen 2, Black Flag, and Sid Meier's Pirates! even if they all had a few cheesy pirate moments. So don't turn down a game because there are boats, muskets and cutlasses in it. Lastly, the game world. People don't seem to like how the developers divided up the world into islands, but it is more or less a way of providing real contrast to the world, which is good. If you hate that so much, even though you can fast travel to your boat at almost any given moment, then you may choose to hate on loading screens. Seriously guys, try to get good at a game before shooting it down for being difficult. Expand

Story: Messed up, too many elements put together without proper explanation. Questions from Risen 1 never got answered, instead they added extra story elements that only managed to confuse as more.

World Design: Weak. It doesn't feel realistic and unique. Multiple islands and invisible walls spoil the "open world" feeling. Too many empty areas without the proper content, only filled with randomly placed enemies. There is not a single town in the whole game.

NPC's: Again, weak. Voice acting is below average, there are many NPC's and companions but the fail to immerse you in the game world. They have no strong personality. Too many dialogues that become boring. I would prefer less, and more meaningful ones. Speaking gnomes turn the game into a parody destroying the "mature" feeling.

Combat: Better animations than R2, but still it doesn't feel right especially in the beginning. Enemies have a unnatural long attack range causing you headache and extremely bad AI. As the game progresses combat gets easier but also repetitive and boring. Magic is a good addition, but it doesn't seem to fit in the pirate/caribbean setting.

Inventory: Same from Risen 2. Extremely unpractical, I would prefer Risen 1 inventory instead.

The Germans took a step back and reintroduced more of the distinctive atmosphere of the Gothic series and the first Risen, which is a huge advantage for me. The world is so vivid and lively that it really makes you want to be there and see as much of the vast content as possible. It’s a shame that the game’s engine is visibly aging and the story lacks the punch. [10/2014, p.48]
