This game is that what I expected. There is a lot of that things that were the best in Risen and Gothic series. Combat system is dynamic and enjoyable. Game world has been made perfectly. You can decide where your hero will sail on a ship almost at game start. Story is very good and surprising. Risen 3 is one of the best RPG game of this year by me.
    You need to buy it!

I don't get why Risen 2 got so much hate and neither do I understand why this one receives such low scores, especially from PB fans. If you want another Gothic 2, then this is not it. If you did not like Risen 1 and 2, you won't like this one as well. If you did like the previous games, then why the hell are you still reading these reviews? Go get yourself Risen 3. It's an order.

Gothic 2 reborn. Of course a team of 25 people with a a small budget can not possibly create something that would interest CoD fanboys but those who still value classic German-style RPGs will be satisfied. Others go play your Skyrim. Nuff said.

Hell, I hardly believe any game deserves a 10, but I'm rating it as such to balance out all of the unwarranted zeros that are coming in... I just want to bump up this user score so that more of you people on the fence will have the chance to experience this wonderful game which, objectively is about a 7.5. In my personal opinion i'd give it a score somewhere in the 8 range... but anyways, onward to the real review!

This game is a gem and you wont find many others like it. It has so much heart and character. The world just feels so deliberately crafted. Everything in the game world is placed with a purpose. You may stumble upon a quest objective without activating the quest and then further on down the road, meet the character that gives the quest to turn it in. It's nothing if not an interesting quest set up. This design choice deviates from the random events and occurrences in modern games like Skyrim, but brings to the table a feeling that this world was crafted with care and attention to detail. This, among other things such the loot, craftable materials, varied jungles, caves, beaches, fortresses and more make exploration a real treat! My favorite location is Calador, a volcanic island with a massive waterfront fortress and green bonfires dotting the coastline. It really is a sight to behold!

Now for the question i'm sure is on everyones mind... Does the gameplay hold up? The short answer is yes... but lets dig a little deeper. The combat certainly isn't the best in the genre. it won't win any awards, but it's serviceable. In the beginning you start out with a very limited move set with very few options. If you've played previous installments in the series or gothic games, you know how this aspect works. you find skill trainers and vendors to sell you new equipment. Slowly but surely you become a force to be reckoned with over the course of the game. The combat animations are improved over the last game and everything generally flows better... the only downfall I see is that the game never seems to be able to find a balance in difficulty. you're either breezing through enemies that have fallen behind you after you've leveled up a bit or you're getting destroyed by enemies that can kill you in 1-3 hits because you're not strong enough yet... Flaws aside, the combat is still servicable and is not nearly the biggest reason to play the game.

Digging into the finer details, you'll find that there are surprisingly few bugs for such a massive game. In fact, I haven't even run into a single one. The voice acting is a mixed bag that ranges from cringe-worthy to quite good. Magic is back in force and can really serve to spice up combat. Meaningful faction choices have made a return and really contribute to changing the way you progress and play the game. You get companions, some of which are rather interesting and provide commentary and comedic relief. The main questline is a bit lacklustre, but that isn't what this game is all about... it's about getting lost in the vast world and forging your own destiny! It's about exploring and finding all of the secrets and content packed into the game! it's about side quests, and loot, and character progression, and choice! The choice to pick a direction, any direction, and be confident that there will be something new to discover right around the corner. It's about all of these things... and while the game certainly isn't perfect (it has its fair share of flaws) it's definitely a rare gem in a sea of mainstream rpgs that all try to to the same thing over and over.

In short, if you're a Gothic/Risen fan, you know what you're getting into, and this is some of PB's best work. If you're new to the series, this is a good place to start. You may love it, you may hate it, but I urge anyone who's on the fence to give it a shot! I hope you can find as much enjoyment in this game as I have so far.

    6) This is Magic!

Their intricate, small world RPG format has stayed for the most part unchanged over it's life as a company, and while some would berate them for their stubbornness against adapting to the modern RPG norms of vast open worlds and 'dynamic events', anyone tired of these tropes and elder scrolls bandwagonry will truly appreciate an RPG that for better or worse defies modern convention is pursuit of an intimate and intricate, dense world and collection of characters.

Naturally it has it's problems, first and foremost a combat system that while adequate, feels shallow (although in my 10 hours I've yet to actually train up in weapon skills, so it's a yet unexplored facet of the game to me). Beyond this, the introduction of the world is a bit 'too much too fast', for me; after the short opening section of the game you're given a boat and free reign, which some may view as a positive, but I need some direction to avoid being overwhelmed.

Some list the voice acting as poor, and I'll be the first to admit the MC sometimes sounds like Batman with his level of gravel, although mostly the issue is overstated considering the budget of the game.

Considering everything though, with an excellent degree of freedom beyond that initial feeling of overexposure, a charming, personal and surprisingly diverse world, plentiful and mostly un-cliched quests, Risen 3 is a pleasant return to form from a developer that many fears has succumbed to consolitis after their previous game.

As a disclaimer however, as mentioned in this start of this review, if you didn't like Gothic 1 or 2, or the original Risen, then you're almost certainly slated to not enjoy this.

Risen 3 is one of those games you can consider as a real RPG game. It doesn't have to be 10, but I gave it 10 because the stupidity of casual gamers nowadays is unbearable. If this game was named "Elder Scrolls", "Final Fantasy",... or belong to some crappy mainstream well-marketed IP, it would have got a 8-9. But no, the world was never meant to be fair.

Risen 3 is made by Piranha Bytes, the creator of Gothic. Gothic is an RPG game got released way back in 2001, and back in the day this game was a truly revolution, it has a whole 3D world with completely free roaming gameplay and non-linear story. There are many features that games back in those days don't have, e.g swimming, climbing, voiced dialogue,... but Gothic has it all (this is where people who claim Morrowind was a revolution need to do more homework)
So what made Gothic become such an unfamiliar name for many gamers today? It wasn't well-marketed, same as Risen franchise. The sad truth about humanity is that we tend to believe in fancy advertises than a product's quality, if "unfamiliar" games like this coming out of nowhere, people will try to make it looks as bad as possible (unless some fools like PewDiePie doing his stupid commentary for the game and it suddenly gains a large fanbase later).
I must say it's a miracle that Piranha Bytes still manage to make more games. Since Risen 2, their games were made with low budget and the quality shouldn't be expected to be some AAA crap that the publisher spend more money on advertise than development.
Despite the low budget, Risen 3 was developed with all quality and heart, the graphic is kinda outdated but still great (whoever says it looks like a PS2 game is probably too stupid since they never knew what was PS2 graphic look like), the combat was a huge improvement compare to Risen 2. But nonetheless, the immersive, the atmosphere, the writting,... everything stuff that make Piranha Bytes's games amazing are still there.
If you are a REAL RPG player, this game will suit you best. Whoever said it suck (same as saying Risen 2 suck) are probably too stupid to realise what a RPG is.

The scope for multiple ways in order to solve quests are sure to get fans nostalgic. And surely enough, the player is introduced to the game at a slow pace with an often brutal learning curve in typical PB fashion. It is also refreshing once you realize the developers have obviously put in more effort into the role-playing aspects (such as the reintroduction of magic) and crafting a living, breathing world instead of, say, a requirement-heavy game replete with miles of gorgeous foliage with barely enough content to fill up a teaspoon, beautifully rendered towns filled with equally well represented, fully voiced mindless zombies who just stand around, repeating the same mindless babble, or a main quest which can be finished in 5 minutes (I am looking at you, Oblivion).
Therefore make no mistakes Gothic Fans - Piranha Bytes have certainly gone back yo their roots, and they definitely pulled no punches with their latest release. For those who loved the Gothic series despite all the bad localization and assorted bugs, Risen 3 may just bring you to tears of appreciation.

It is true that you have a good chunk of pirate setting. But you have ( germany's gamestar divided in specific game hours) a lot of hours (22+) with no palms and no pirates.

This game is a wonderful mix of (of course) Risen 2 thing but Risen 1 (and in some ways little Gothic-) style elements.

    Examples of R1/Gothic-Style:
    There are ladders again.
You can drink out of water barrels (i missed this so in R2).
You have 3 real Guilds with their own magic (mystic based, rune based, voodoo based), skills, armors etc. So... if you have a Voodoo/Pirate Guild it is only logic that you have some pirate Elements in the game. They are structed in most of the cases as own isles. So if you are on a pirate/voodoo isle of course there is som pirate/voodoo setting. But there are a lot of isles (eg. Taranis/Calador) where you spent hours with no pirate things... dark fantasy, lava settings, fortress settings...
    You can swim again (*yea*).
You can sit down on Chairs or something else.
You have more (not full) freedom in movement (think of climbing).

These are clear back too the roots things. I think Piranha Bytes did the wonderful Job in bringing back old fashioned features an mix them with elements from the former Risen games.

And by the way. This is a true RPG... after a chapter of tutorial things you start on a low level Char an you have to earn your skills and stats the hard rpg way.

The graphics are not AAA. But its so beautiful designed (mostly by hand) that you often will stop just to wonder about the beautiful scene. Do yourself a favour and play on PC ;-)

Quests are good. You will have a lot of quests. Okey. Some are standard. But inbetween there will be some very creative ones ;-)

Please keep in mind that Piranha Bytes is a small Dev (approx 25 devs) with limited resources.
So you will see some limitations. Fighting animations are quite good. But Dialoge Animations are very "old fashioned". Some textures will load (even on PC). Story is ok but not overwhelming.

The fighting system is good (in no doubt ways better than r2). Button mashing is no solution. You have to go tactical. But it could be better. By all means. It's not a catastrophe and the finishing moves are slick and fit into the scene...

All in all this game is a little masterpiece if you are able to look over some nitpicks. Give it a chance. In my opinition it's the best of both worlds with a lot of heart and the best of the 3 Risen Titles... definitively worth buying.

A lot of comments are looking like the players didn't spend enough time in the game to get a complete view. Keep in mind this game is about 40 hours +. It is not enough to spend 1-2 hours to get a clear view!

I see a lot of people giving negative feedback about how clunky it seems at first, but too many people have been "babied" by RPGs lately, wherein you are a superhero from the very beginning. Like early Gothic games it's hard and your character doesn't know what end of the stick is pointy at first, but you get better over the course of the game until you're a powerhouse that can dance around opponents with ease.

I won't give anything away, but I didn't see what other reviewers have said about it being a cliche' story. Sure, there are only so many ways that you can set your hero back to zero, but none of the storyline seems arbitrary or out of place.

Voice acting is solid, with a few characters from previous games coming back. The return of factions and subgroups, plus some nice sea combat surprises round out this game and give it what previous incarnations didn't quite capture from Gothic 1&2, a satisfying story arc.

I was guardedly optimistic about this game, but it delivered in all the ways I wanted it to.

Risen 3 is quite an improvement from its predecessor: Risen 2 in all the right places. The animations, skills, exploration, and graphics have all been upgraded. One of the reasons the Risen series is not enjoyable for gamers is due to its frustrating combat. I can attest to being very frustrated with the combat in Risen 2. The combat in Risen 3 has not been improved very dramatically. The combat system is mostly the same except for a few tweaks. You will still get frustrated at one point or another, but continuing through the story definitely has its benefits.

The animations during fighting battles have vastly improved, easily having the best animation work out of the Risen series to date. Skills also pour into the combat system more than ever. Yes, you still have to use money to purchase skills. Yes, you still have to use glory to purchase skills. But, the skills you learn in Risen 3 are more beneficial than any other skills in the Risen series. The skills provide players a somewhat easier time in each fight because they are learning extra skills that will help in combat, providing for quicker and more efficient kills.

Where Risen 3 really shines is its exploration and its storyline. You are a new hero in the Risen universe who has his soul ripped out from a Titan Lord and must get it back. Simple premise, but its a little more complicated. When you wake up, a war between the Titans and humans is going on and your hero is caught in the middle of it. He is then sent to destroy Titan portals, to keep Titans from entering the world as well as forming an alliance between the remaining island factions to ensure humans are victorious. The storyline provides hundreds of quests that people can give you to do in exchange for money, items, or even glory. The quests can range anywhere from "Kill x Amount of Bloodhounds" to recovering stolen items. Factions and exploration are a few main features of Risen 3. You can join three factions: Demon Hunters, Voodoo Pirates, or the Guardians. Joining one over the other reaps different benefits than another. You may also only be able to learn skills if you are a specific faction, which may be of use to you later in the game. Going back to the islands from Risen 2 was refreshing but also disturbing when you see all the destruction that has been caused to the cities. Exploring the large amounts of caves also gave me a Skyrim feel, which I haven't felt for a while. It seems like every place matters to where its at and every place is different and distinct from another place. There is not a huge difference in graphics, but Piranha Bytes obviously took a lot of feedback from Risen 2 and improved some major bugs within the graphical system. The storyline provides anywhere from 10-50 hours of gameplay; depending on how many hours you spend on exploring and how many hours you spend on doing the wide variety of quests.

Something came back to the Risen franchise. Magic. There is still Voodoo magic, but I'm talking about REAL magic. Such as magic from Risen 1. I loved magic in Risen 1 and I was really happy to see them bring it back for Risen 3. In Risen 3 it is done very well and one of my playthroughs I eventually just used magic because of how powerful it was. If you would like to become a wizard, join the Guardians faction, they are the faction that handles magic.

Although, the game is better than previous titles in the series, it has its flaws. One, the combat system. It hasn't been revamped and you will still get frustrated from your "lack-of-skill". Although, unlike Risen 2, if you keep leveling up and buying more skills, you will begin to have the upperhand in combat; which was awesome to see and kept me going. Although there is a TON of exploration, you are visiting the same places as in Risen 2. I really would have liked to see another world, instead of the one from the previous title.

This game takes many pages from the Fable playbook. While it is definitely no Skyrim, about 5 hours in I can say that I am entertained and borderline hooked. There are enough elements to make this my game of choice for the foreseeable future (until something better comes along).

Amazing game. The american audience is missing the point - again. When it first came out, 3 days before it arrived in Europe, it already had 90% bad reviews. But beware - it's an european game and it is better than any american-made open-world RPG. Suck it up.

Ok, I feel I have to write a review because this is ridiculous. Of course the game is not a 10, but the stupidity of people giving it 1's and 0's has to be countered.
These must be coming from Angry Joe fans who want to turn the series into a meme and get angry because people actually enjoy it, or Skyrim fans who didn't know what they were getting into before spending their money.

I understand and completely agree with most of the criticism coming from Gothic and Risen 1 fans, but this game has improved a lot of things from Risen 2, the exlporation is great, the factions are interesting , the scenery is varied and it retains that Pb charm. The combat is improved but still not good.

The developers made a huge mistake with the intorduction of the game. It forces you into the pirate theme, they drop you into action in a linear introductory story immediately without properly explaining fighting and the possibilitea to improve it, and it does not show you the depth and beautiy of the game in the first hours. HUGE DESIGN MISTAKE! Because the game itself is really good once you manage to develope your skills and understand the Gothic like game system. If the game started on Calador with a more like medieval theme and more armor and clothes customization with a better stoury indroduction the Game would have gotten better scores. I wish they made another real Gothic like RPG with a classic orc-human-monsters fantasy based world with this or better graphics, AAA voice acting Gothic 3 sized world.... Witcher 3 is not even close to this in terms of exploration/rewarding system, game mechanics.

The atmosphere of this game is great. I don't think, that I've been playing a good RPG like this one for a while now. The graphics and the level of details is more than epic. Also the german voices are pretty cool and help the atmosphere getting even better. But there is something, I don't really like about this game. While in Risen 1 Kai Rosenkranz made the music. And he made it good, in Risen 2 and 3 the music isn't worth listenening. The whole game I turned WinAmp on and listened to some other music.
But thats it. It is a pretty awesome game. And I love it.

It's interesting that although all these guys have kind of crap voicework and writing, we've shared so many adventures that I sort of love them all regardless :)

At first I thought the quality of writing and quest design would make this a sad experience, but when I in fact diluted all NPCs with serious amount of exploring, my enjoyment went right up. One other criticism is how easy the game becomes if you do explore a lot an level up that way.

Still at the end of the day, I put 40+ hours in and very much enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next from PB, having kind of lost faith with them previously.

    - Jumping finally has animations, jumping forward in risen two was just bending one of your knees and that's it.
-You can swim again in this game, which is pretty useful.
-you have a new ability, called Astral Vision, and if you upgrade it you will be able to find hidden chests, gold, plants etc.
-you can use magic in each faction, I always loved using magic in a PB game so for me it's a plus.
-More flora and fauna, parrots flying around.
-You can turn into an evil person (shadow) or a human, depending if you're nice to people or not, which makes dialogue more interesting and you should be careful of what you say.

and a few more things, but can't think of it now, like I said 10/10, a score of 5.2 is not what this game really deserves, you just didn't play it too much, or you only played the beginning saying that it's a pirate game.

very well. Some say the enemies predict your movement, the fighting is unfair
and it's just a click orgy. But with the time you gain the skills to better kill
the enemies and learn their patterns. It's not like other modern games,
where you are from the beginning capable of killing dozens of enemies at once

    Graphics
The game is gorgeous. Sunlight/Godrays crash through the canopies of the trees; distant mountains cast their shadow on distant land realistically; fire never looked as good; water makes you want to jump right in; distant ruins beckon you to explore them; higher tier armour -- the cloth properly dancing as you move, the steel reflecting the light -- makes you drool as you stare at your hero. The physics engine is also fluid and realistic, enemies falling back after having received their killing blow will tumble over objects or droop down from them.

    Gameplay
It's still what you expect from any Risen or Gothic game: The HUD is simple, and that's perfectly fine. In fact, I wouldn't have it any other way. You can now also change into a parrot with scrolls that you'll find everywhere -- specifically in high places! -- the devs silently begging you to use them as turning into a parrot makes you glide however long you want. There's a little energybar nonetheless which will slowly empty whenever you want to fly upward. It's fun! And as for the combat...

    Combat
It has improved SO MUCH! If you time your attacks properly, you can swing with heavy attacks almost as fast as you would with normal attacks. This needs some practise, but once you get a feel for it, it becomes easy. For some too easy, though many players still think combat is hard. As you gain enough experience (or Glory) you'll be able to gain the Riposte skill, which, if you time it right, your parry will execute a sweet animation of your hero evading a strike and counter-attacking with a strike of his own. You can also still dodge, which is an ability that can be exploited since there's no stamina bar. I say exploited, because during a dodge you're practically invincible. A fantastic addition to the combat is the finishing move on humanoids. When you kill the last enemy in an encounter, you watch your character execute him. There are multiple finishers. Your hero pushes an enemy against a wall, rams his weapon's hilt into the face multiple times before running him through; your hero turns the enemy around and slits his throat, etc. etc. etc. My most favorite finisher is where the enemy runs toward the hero and the hero steps aside at the last moment, leaving his weapon stretched horizontally in the enemy's path... the enemy runs into the blade, stumbles past the hero and eventually drops on the ground a few strides further, quite dead. Imagine stuff like this with a perfect physics engine. Yes, if there's a ledge a few strides behind your hero in said finisher, the enemy will stumble and drop down the edge instead. Deader than dead. So awesome.

    Exploration
There's so much to see and do and find in this game! Almost every NPC with a name (which is almost every NPC) has a quest or more quests. When you climb up a mountain and see these mysterious places in the far, far distance... well, that telltale feeling rushes through every RPG player -- the feeling that says: I NEED to go there and explore every nook and cranny! And I can guarantee: You WILL be rewarded for it.

    Final verdict
I love this game. I am not kidding. It's the best thing in the gaming world that has happened to me in YEARS. And that's coming from a guy who fell in LOVE with Gothic 1 & 2, Risen 1 and very much disliked Risen 2. I catch myself playing this game with a content smile on my face. It's crazy. This game is phenomenal!

Risen 3 is an old-school RPG - decisions matter, live or die. Pick your fights carefully, especially at the beginning. Character divergency is therefore slower than with a class based system, but markedly faster than with the first Risen.
A small boat, a single companion and 6-8 coasts to explore give an open world feeling. Day/night cycle has impact on monster behaviour and quests. Locations range from vulcanic to moderate to tropical, graphics are ok.
You will eventually hire more crew, with special abilities and some quests, and get a bigger ship from your choosen faction. There are again 3 factions to join, for spells, equipment and tuition.
PB specific, you'll explore the NPCs and their stories like the locations, questing for teachers, traders and supplies.
Unlike the "pirates of the carribbean" rip-off risen 2, the game is back to high fantasy. There's still pirates though; and more scripted sea battles and sea monster fights than other bosses.

Main weapon choices are melee with 3 subclasses, or guns and spells.
Close combat is a rare mix of stats (weapon, skills, perks) and actual personal skill; and feels like fencing. As your character grows, he will learn more perks like counterattack, faster attacks or some spells that allow him to better regain and keep the initiative. Better weapons and skills cause more damage per hit.
Enemy animations signal if they're about to attack or hard-hit or cast. This allows an experienced player to go on hard where a casual player struggles on easy. Enemy patterns can be exploited, too. Playing casually is still possible if you accept that you lack the fighting edge and play carefully.
Guns and spells as main weapons can't block attacks, so you must hit hard, evade and use a meat shield. Only mage guardians seem to offer a main spell from the start.

Story is fine; you don't know what is actually going on for a long, long time...
I prefer english over german voice acting, even though the fist companion's voice is annoyingly doddery.

    + open, diverse world
    + extremely immersive gameplay
    + I actually like the combat :P
    - sea fight balance (got over with some on easy)

The story in Risen 3 is wonderful and keeps you going through the entire game.

The one thing that always brings the Risen franchise down though, is the abundance of bugs. The first Risen game was buggy, the second one was too, and so of course this one has a number of bugs. Most of the bugs that I've seen are connected to the fact that you can climb pretty much anything. Essentially because of the lack of invisible walls. Now don't get me wrong, the lack of invisible walls is a GREAT thing! It weighs up for the bugs with an interactive game world that is only matched by games such as The Elder Scrolls series and perhaps Fallout.

Risen 3 provides a lot of freedom to do whatever you want. It's a vast and rich world which you are able to explore freely. It has just enough linearity to keep it from becoming one of those open-world games where you travel the world not knowing what to do.

I'll have to admit, even as a Risen fan, I wasn't prepared for a good game when I first bought it. Since it's predecessor wasn't what I expected, I wasn't expecting much from this one either. The only thing that made me buy it was that I wanted to try out some new hardware, and boy was it a good choice!
Thank you Deep Silver for a really nice RPG. Try to fix the bugs for your future games and I'm sure you'll get a 10/10.

Risen 3 isn't a 10/10 game, if that's what you're expecting, you will be disappointed.
If you on the other hand are looking for an epic pirate/fantasy game with the right amount of difficulty and freedom to keep you going for a long time, this is the game for you!

As for the combat, all I can say is that it works. It's not great but it feels more fluid and responsive than in previous PB games. The "game journalists" that called Skyrim "game of the year and all years" have really no right to complain about combat in another RPG. If anything, the combat in Risen 3 feels very easy even on the hardest difficulty, especially if you have a companion with you. The reintroduction of magic also offers more variety in the ways you choose to engage your enemies. Overall I found Risen 3 to be a solid RPG. It's not as good as the first 2 Gothics but I found it a lot more enjoyable than other AAA releases in the last few years. Expand

I only hate that shortened looting and crafting, but I loved the "recycled" Elements from "Gothic" and other Fantasy games. But they didn´t steal or where too lazy to make something new and fresh, its just what fans wanted. If u are not a fan, you maybe don´t like that, but there is so much more to explore for you as well. Its a little bit too much made for consoles and for younger gamers (children), but still has entertained me very well. Solid gameplay and adventure of the previous Risen and Gothic Games. Pure Awesomeness. Apparently lots of people don't like to learn the different types of play style that these games have always featured. But if you have an open mind, love RPGs and are a decent gamer you might want to give it a try.

It is a decent successor to Risen 2 and returns the magic that was present in the original Risen. I like the open world and the story, but the combat is suboptimal. I had an enjoyable 50 hours in this sequel.

I was expecting this to be a very bad game since Risen 2 was a total failure for me with it's pirate theme, but since I heard that developers went to the roots, I started looking for that Gothic 2 feeling, and I found it and even more. Adventures, challenges, a lot of death and missteps :) This is the most interesting game in this year so far that got me into the game for a very long time :) Thank you Piranha Bytes for this!

Now, the combat style. Piranha bytes is known for their weird combat style, but that doesn't mean it went bad in this game. Someone may like it, someone not, I personally find it quite tactical, that you don't just keep bashing NPCs until they die.
What can be annyoing on Risen 3 is that almost every monster or animal attacks you when you come near and there's A LOT of monsters or animals, so if you gonna play Risen 3, prepare to fight everytime you move.

I bought this game on friday and completed it today, after almost exactly 30 hours.

I liked the Gothic series, I also liked Risen but didn't play Risen 2 because people were saying it was awful, so having that in mind, this is my opinion about Risen 3: It starts kinda slow. It starts kinda slow. In the beginning, you're bound to always having a partner because otherwise you'd be way too weak to kill anything.

/ Graphics are really outdated in mi opinion, but that doesn' really hurt the game.
    - The english VO sounds terrible. I reinstalled and switched to german and it was way better. (Though most of the people will have to play it with english VO)
    - Combat is really boring until you join a guild and learn some spells.
    - Crafting too simple

+ The world is pretty. It's kinda big, but not that big. It's ok-size.
+ It's non-linear. You can go whereever you want, whenever you want and keep switching between islands. Of course there are quests that require to have some previous stuff done, but you can start anywhere you like.
+ Character skill system is ok. You earn experience and use that experience to level up things like Meleedamage, Rangedamage, Defense, etc. Abilities are still learned the same way as previous games. (They literally havn't changed that since Gothic, still the same through dialogs)

The thing about the game is, some will hate it, some will love it. As I've already completed the game, I played for around 10hrs/day on average this past weekend so I can safely say I liked it.

P.S Reading some of the user reviews gives me cancer. It's sad that there are so many trolls. This game is by no way a masterpiece nor GOTY, but it should be a solid 7. Also people giving it a 10... c'mon, be realistic. Even though it seems to be necessary to counter the troll votes.

Roll/power hit and connecting swings can be mastered, and once you observe the pattern of beasts(as in previous games) game become more fun to play. Than you have to master the mobs, and ultimately mixed mobs (really challenging). Voice acting is improved over previous installments, and story is enjoyably enough. Animations: Not on par with Witcher 2 but a huge improvement, better facial animations and less overacting when it comes to gestures.
The World: Beautiful and handcrafted as always with much more varity. Those who talk about "another pirate theme game" already indicate that they haven't played even 10% of the game because yeah their are caribbean islands in the beginning but also much larger, mediterranean ones. The animals are sleeping at night, hunting others and just overall have a great level of detail. I never saw a world designed with so much heart.
Content: I'm about 25 hours in still have so much to do just playing through all island in the second chapter. Around 50 hours should be possible for one playthrough with is absolutely fine.
Story: Well I guess the biggest letdown as always even so they try to direct it in a much more "epic" way what makes it even worse. Even you can't tell a good story just make it more optional like Skyrim did.
Minigames / Naval Combat: Minigames like drinking are fun, but the biggest thing is the adaption of the naval combat. Finally you feel really like commanding a ship and fighting sea monsters. Awesome!
Character system: Much more perks and attributes to skill and everything well fit together. Also the 3 different guilds will enable you special abilitys as well as their own questlines.
Moral system: Besides the nightmare sequences which give a foreshadow of whats coming and motivating the hero to move an, your "soul" level will have influence which of 2 ending you will get which also adds to the replay ability besides the 3 different guilds.

I guess that its for now.. all in all not a milestone because of the lackluster story but besides that you get a varied, skill based rpg with a beautiful world to explore and tons of things to do. Have fun!

Just like in previous games, xp is awarded for killing creatures and completing quests, but this time it can be freely distributed among a number of attributes, such as close combat, thievery or magic. Increasing the attributes takes progressively more xp. Based on the skill level, character can purchase additional perks, typically for 500-2000 gold, which makes money very valuable.

I don't remember much about Risen2 - never finished that game, and this time you are given companions too. Admittedly, they make combat a bit too easy. Bons, the first companion not only heals you, but is also dealing major damage and tanking. I've seen him killed once by 3 minions.

The game has full voice acting, and dialogue is decent. I don't get why people don't like it - it's exactly the same style as all the previous Gothic style games. Gruff main hero, cursing, swearing, mostly male voices. The bons companion is rather funny, as he keeps reminiscing of ritual sacrifices and likes dark scary places.

There's maybe 8 different islands to explore, and they are all pretty large, with diverse landscape, caves, hills, etc. The new "parrot" spell makes some locations only accessible via limited flight. Some areas are clearly more dangerous than others.

The game has a crafting system with a number of crafting stations - forges, artificing, jewelry, brewing, alchemy, scrollmaking and vodoo. From what I've seen so far, crafting requires a recipe and ingredients.

Just as in previous games, the amount of armor and weapons available to the hero is pretty limited. There are some pirate clothes, but they are outclassed by the "wanderer" uniform I found myself wearing right after the first island. The majority of swords were inferior to the sword I bought on the second island I visited.

I don't know why people call this story a cliche, I think it is rather good - I was thinking "why am I given a character which seems quite advanced right off the start of the game".... What happened next was quite surprising.

Overall, I think the game is worth the 50$, even if it is to support the "open world" PC games.

PS. I'm liking this more than Skyrim.

If you are looking for an action packed, gore filled game...then look elsewhere. Piranha Bytes' games have never been about mindless slaughter, but rather deep and careful exploration of the rich environment, carefully crafted quests, interesting characters and total immersion. Risen 2 may have strayed away a bit from some of these factors, but I can confidently say that Risen 3 has certainly improved greatly over it, and the feeling and atmosphere of the game is much more reminiscent of the original Gothic games and the first Risen.

One of the biggest complaints of the previous game in the Risen series was the combat system. This time, however, not only is the magic system back, adding greater variety, but melee combat feels much more satisfying, and it's certainly NOT a left click fest - if you want to defeat a strong enemy, you must dodge, block, riposte and time your hits.

Risen 3: Titan Lords is a game for all the players who loved Piranha Bytes' classical works. Perhaps the plot isn't up to par with Gothic 1's, but nevertheless, as the final game in the series, it has certainly lived up to its promise to go back to the roots - the more observant fans will even notice some very pleasant surprises involving familiar characters from times gone by.

Some people complain about the combat, but I find it refreshing in a "If I die, it is my own fault" way. Enemies don't hold back, so you must find their patterns and weaknesses. Through careful observation this can be done. It's a demanding combat system, and simply hacking away will almost always spell disaster.
The environments are gorgeous, but the characters live in the uncanny valley. It appears there is no level scaling and you're not punished for bringing companions along. You also have an unlimited inventory!

I have played through the first island and a bit of Antigua. Not a lot, but I did see a few bugs. Mostly with quest specific dialogue triggering out of place and a few graphical glitches. Nothing game breaking - but something a bit more QA could iron out. It certainly won't keep me from playing the game.

All in all it seems like a good game with a steep combat learning curve. Dark Souls fans probably will feel right at home :)
Severe competition is on the horizon. Dragon Age and Witcher 3, though still several months away both of them. Until then, this game will be perfect for when I am not playing Divinity:Original Sin.

Many enemies are unfair since their attack animations are 2-3 times faster than yours and they will gang on you - especially spiders. Yes, it is hard early on, but with enough patience, sooner or later, when your main character learns the necessary combat skills, your character's movement becomes more faster. Nonetheless, Combat centers around carefully timing your attacks and dodging frequently(you'll spam the evade button a lot, believe me). Sadly, the attack animation in Risen 3 is fairly slow, and you'll see the same three hit animation from....any humanlike NPC or enemy who has a weapon equipped(Pirates, guards, bandits, shadow warriors etc) including yourself. In the game, you'll encounter potential buddies to bring along in your crew. They are all unique in their own ways and usually comment on the current location or situation you're in. And most of the time , its hilarious.

On some occasions, the game did remind me of Gothic(since it IS from the same developer); the different factions you can join and their specific armor you can get by joining them, the points of interest to explore and the vast amount of side quests.

Several side quests consists of mini-games however most of them which aren't THAT engaging and are usually pretty easy. Knife-throwing, arm-wrestling, drinking alcohol challenges, and even the lockpicking mechanism itself is a mini game. However, completing them does fetch you some nice EXP(or Glory, as it is called in Risen) and gold, so you might want to consider doing them. There are even naval combat which is quite annoying in my opinion - and they can't be avoided.

The storyline is...well, fairly dull and uninteresting. The hero loses his "soul" and is an empty "moving shell"; literally a zombie. He then goes on a journey to islands to fetch powerful magic users to help him become human again. Sounds rather cliche, right? In the end, I was more hooked into customizing my hero's stats and skills. The game becomes addictive once your avatar unlocks more skills. In terms of playability, I did experience two or three crashes and occasional freezes from time to time, which forced me to restart my PC. All in all, it wasn't entirely frustrating. So my advice? Just save often.

Final words: You might find Risen's generic-looking main menu(even some indie titles I've played were presented better)tad boring and the storyline which isn't unique. In terms of gameplay its difficult early on but trust me, this game could actually be worth any RPG fan's time, if they have the patience.

Bottom-line: Anyone who lacks the patience and just "simply want to jump into the action" parts should stay away.

Highs: + Very rewarding + Can be addictive + Decent graphics + Deep skill/ability customization + Interesting and hilarious crew members

Lows - Steep learning curve - Enemies are very unforgiving - Dull storyline - Lacking attack animations - Mini-games are too easy Collapse

I say this is the best RPG this year , the story is great and there is a lot to explore plus you can go to any island you like from the start . The combat is fine better then 1 and 2 and as a risen fan I love how they are consistent in the mythos of the franchise .

I really don't get why people are complaining about **** graphics and dialogues. Yes, the engine is outdated, but in my opinion the good art/world design compensates for that.
Regarding the dialogues i can only guess that the english localisation isn't done well. Risen 3 is made by a german studio after all and the german versions dialogues emit the same gruff charme as Risen 1+2 an the

Yes, the combat system still has it's issues. Especially not putting a cooldown or at least an animation on the instant-heal items and to allow infinite dodge-rolls trivializes most of the fights. This is just a bad design decision, one you can't forgive in times where Dark Souls&Co show how it's done right.

But it is still a great game. The combat system and abrupt ending are the only real problems.
People who complain about monsters having too much life or enemy attacks being too fast just did not understand how this game works. Being a total weakling at the games start is a crucial part of the mechanic. You are supposed to avoid enemies that are too strong - a concept that everyone asked for when they complained about level adjusting elder scrolls monsters. It takes 10-15 hours of gameplay before you can deal with all the enemies you encounter. Reaching this point always was what made prevoius PB games fun and for me it still works.

First impressions: Better than Risen 2 (which I liked for the most part, though the story got a little...meh).

It definitely feels more like Risen, but I have to say that I kinda like Risen's intro better. They didn't give you much detail, but the scale of the island fit with it well. It let you get into the game slowly, and putz around for a while before throwing you into the deep end.

This game, TRIES to do that, but immediately after the prologue you're hit with about half a dozen directions to go in, and twice as many quests sending you there. There's no indication of where you should start (Hint, go see Admiral Alvarez first.)

Also, SO much of the game is locked behind faction choice from the very beginning, even Patty (your own SISTER), won't even join you until you get a bigger ship, and the only way to get THAT is to... join a faction.

Also, Just the first couple spells you get from Joining the faction make the combat SO much better and easier. Before that, it's not just hard, but PUNISHINGLY hard (Dark Souls feels EASIER then the early combat in the game.)

I love the 3 factions, and I'm curious about the re-playability they add. I just wish they didn't force you into RIGHT away, and gave you a bit more info on them beforehand, I had to go and watch the 3 factions trailer on YouTube to understand what they each represented.

I don't want hand holding, but at least at the start of the game give me a hint!

The combat is okay, though the speed is a total hindurance. It's not so bad if you can concentrate on one enemy with your party member. But, right when you start combat, all the enemies immediately aggro you and ignore your party member unless they manage to land a hit. So you end up with 2 or 3 guys hitting you while your party member duels a single enemy. Which wouldn't be bad, but you swing SO goddamn slow, they any time you try to hit a guy, you get interrupted and stun-locked/knocked down. Forcing you to just stand there and parry until your party member takes out their opponent and then comes over to help.

This gets better once you get a couple spells from your faction under your belt (I went Demon Hunter, and the Hellhound Summon, the Heal, and the Teleport are a godsend in battle).

So far, i like it, I'll keep playing it, but there's some hurdles you really need to get over right at the start of the game which can put some people off.

Great game! I can't believe people are bashing this fascinating piece of jewelry! I'd be surprised if these folks wouldn't name "Skyrim" a better rpg. Well, it's the new generation, what can you do! 10/10 game. Best in its category.

For me personally, if graphics are not so bad they interfere with game play, then I don't care about them. For people comparing this to other RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins, I have played several of these to completion, and Risen 3 is among my favorites. The combat is actually better than games like the Elder Scrolls, where you mash buttons until someone falls, or throw in a spell. Here, you have to time your attacks and block when necessary, especially if you get the riposte ability, which I assume a lot of you haters didn't even get far enough to unlock. If you mash the attack button, your attacks are waaaay slower, so try timing them one after the other. And the voice acting? If it bothers you so much because you need something to whine about, then toggle something called "subtitles" to on and mute your computer. Because if the dialogue is horrendous, you can easily just read along instead. When people complain about pirate games, I don't understand why. I loved Risen, Risen 2, Black Flag, and Sid Meier's Pirates! even if they all had a few cheesy pirate moments. So don't turn down a game because there are boats, muskets and cutlasses in it. Lastly, the game world. People don't seem to like how the developers divided up the world into islands, but it is more or less a way of providing real contrast to the world, which is good. If you hate that so much, even though you can fast travel to your boat at almost any given moment, then you may choose to hate on loading screens. Seriously guys, try to get good at a game before shooting it down for being difficult. Expand

This game is like Wine it gets better with age. I remember back at its release I found it lazy because the islands are ripped off from Risen 2. Now I do not remember anything from Risen 2 so Risen 3 is the superior Version.

It is a huge game with loads of missions and cool characters, The only thing I can advise you before starting to go deep inside the main story (go to Fog Island and get the Legendary Item that you can find there!) - 8/10

The Germans took a step back and reintroduced more of the distinctive atmosphere of the Gothic series and the first Risen, which is a huge advantage for me. The world is so vivid and lively that it really makes you want to be there and see as much of the vast content as possible. It’s a shame that the game’s engine is visibly aging and the story lacks the punch. [10/2014, p.48]

The game is goo, but there are too many similarities with the previous installment of the series, and almost all in a negative sense, as neither the combat system, nor the AI have seen some improvements.

While the game builds on the legacy of its previous installments, it also repeats old mistakes. Only for the tolerant camp of the series' hardcore fans. [Issue#245]
