It is a huge game with loads of missions and cool characters, The only thing I can advise you before starting to go deep inside the main story (go to Fog Island and get the Legendary Item that you can find there!) - 8/10

This game is a meh. I couldnt finish it because of very often stupid dialoagues and characters. Really a disappointment from the studio that made Gothic, one of the best games ever.

I liked this game, I found it fun. Just like with other PB games, you feel so weak and combat is terrible but feels easy as you progress.
Dislike how brief the ending was, feels like if you blink you'll miss it.
If you like PB games you'll probably like this one as well.

This game is like Wine it gets better with age. I remember back at its release I found it lazy because the islands are ripped off from Risen 2. Now I do not remember anything from Risen 2 so Risen 3 is the superior Version.

While it is certainly not the best RPG I have played it holds up quite well and offers some enjoyable moments and some unforgettable gameplay. It's combat is clunky and it's characters have little more personality than a rock, but other gameplay elements and it's underlying story make this game a good pick up when you can grab it on sale. It's a good game to add to any RPG fans library.

Risen 3 is Risen 2 with some upgrades, nothing more. I'm long-time fan of Piranha Bytes but I couldn't force myself to enjoy this game, no matter how hard I tried.

Quests are mostly about fetching stuff and only 2-5 quests in the entire game feel at least a little bit original. Combat was improved over Risen 2 but enemies still stun you very often and 99 % of fights have the same style: roll, attack, roll, attack, roll, ... Frustrating.

Voice acting is horrible, soundtrack is forgettable and graphics looks plastic and cheap. World is a little bit more open than in Risen 2, but it's still mostly corridors.

Skip Risen 3, you won't miss anything. And if you want to finish Risen series, prepare that this game will torture you with it's immense stupidity.

If I wanted a game like the other games ... I would play them instead. The point of a sequel is to IMPROVE. Risen 3's combat is awful and it's awful for a single reason that could have been patched out. Your character INSISTS on twirling like a ballerina at her first recital FOR EVERY SWING. This isn't how a sword fight works. This isn't how it should play. The fact that a swing takes three+ seconds to come out is completely stupid, especially when enemy attacks are instant and sometimes drag the creatures across several feet of ground to hit you. It feels like they wanted to mix turn based combat and real time combat, but kept the worst of both. And dodge rolls don't always save you. I have been hit out of so many "dodges" AWAY from enemies because the game teleports them to me. On top of this, the most common healing item is a VERY SLOW regen. I don't mind that, except it should actually be useful. Just make it heal ... three times faster when I'm not in combat. That way I can heal without standing in a field FOR FIVE MINUTES while I wait to recover. I'm not kidding, it's too slow. You're better off just drinking alcohol (potions), except they cost a lot more money, are hard to find in the wild, and are better saved for the middle of a fight.

So, combat boils down to using a companion to distract the thing you want to kill, hitting it in the back til it dies, then standing about while you eat a sandwich to recover HP at a rate of 1 point per 2 seconds, and then going to the next fight. This doesn't sound bad, until you realize that it makes playing without the AI impossible if you come across more than 2 enemies of any type, and fights drag on for 10+ minutes until you get overpowered via spells. There's literally one build that makes you essentially invincible for the whole game.

Everything else, the graphics (passable), the story (passable), the voice acting (cheesy), the world (interesting) works very well. I enjoy the game for the most part, but the combat is a chore that doesn't get any better until you get powerful enough to essentially skip it. And that's not good in a game where combat is a majority of your time spent playing.

Combat tries to be Witcher-like but comes off Witcher-lite, move sets are limited and dodging/rolling is haphazard at best.

I stopped playing after the 10th time falling off an edge due to the weird amount of momentum your character has, in fact, most movement feels a lot like your character is 3 times a heavy as any other model in the game.

Essentially, Gothic 1 was great *at the time* - every game by this company since has had this weird 'stuck in 2002' feel to it, So much so the fan base for this company even admit to being 'cult'.

Risen 3 is no comparison to The Witcher 3.

The developers made a huge mistake with the intorduction of the game. It forces you into the pirate theme, they drop you into action in a linear introductory story immediately without properly explaining fighting and the possibilitea to improve it, and it does not show you the depth and beautiy of the game in the first hours. HUGE DESIGN MISTAKE! Because the game itself is really good once you manage to develope your skills and understand the Gothic like game system. If the game started on Calador with a more like medieval theme and more armor and clothes customization with a better stoury indroduction the Game would have gotten better scores. I wish they made another real Gothic like RPG with a classic orc-human-monsters fantasy based world with this or better graphics, AAA voice acting Gothic 3 sized world.... Witcher 3 is not even close to this in terms of exploration/rewarding system, game mechanics.

For me personally, if graphics are not so bad they interfere with game play, then I don't care about them. For people comparing this to other RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins, I have played several of these to completion, and Risen 3 is among my favorites. The combat is actually better than games like the Elder Scrolls, where you mash buttons until someone falls, or throw in a spell. Here, you have to time your attacks and block when necessary, especially if you get the riposte ability, which I assume a lot of you haters didn't even get far enough to unlock. If you mash the attack button, your attacks are waaaay slower, so try timing them one after the other. And the voice acting? If it bothers you so much because you need something to whine about, then toggle something called "subtitles" to on and mute your computer. Because if the dialogue is horrendous, you can easily just read along instead. When people complain about pirate games, I don't understand why. I loved Risen, Risen 2, Black Flag, and Sid Meier's Pirates! even if they all had a few cheesy pirate moments. So don't turn down a game because there are boats, muskets and cutlasses in it. Lastly, the game world. People don't seem to like how the developers divided up the world into islands, but it is more or less a way of providing real contrast to the world, which is good. If you hate that so much, even though you can fast travel to your boat at almost any given moment, then you may choose to hate on loading screens. Seriously guys, try to get good at a game before shooting it down for being difficult. Expand

Story: Messed up, too many elements put together without proper explanation. Questions from Risen 1 never got answered, instead they added extra story elements that only managed to confuse as more.

World Design: Weak. It doesn't feel realistic and unique. Multiple islands and invisible walls spoil the "open world" feeling. Too many empty areas without the proper content, only filled with randomly placed enemies. There is not a single town in the whole game.

NPC's: Again, weak. Voice acting is below average, there are many NPC's and companions but the fail to immerse you in the game world. They have no strong personality. Too many dialogues that become boring. I would prefer less, and more meaningful ones. Speaking gnomes turn the game into a parody destroying the "mature" feeling.

Combat: Better animations than R2, but still it doesn't feel right especially in the beginning. Enemies have a unnatural long attack range causing you headache and extremely bad AI. As the game progresses combat gets easier but also repetitive and boring. Magic is a good addition, but it doesn't seem to fit in the pirate/caribbean setting.

Inventory: Same from Risen 2. Extremely unpractical, I would prefer Risen 1 inventory instead.

At first I thought the quality of writing and quest design would make this a sad experience, but when I in fact diluted all NPCs with serious amount of exploring, my enjoyment went right up. One other criticism is how easy the game becomes if you do explore a lot an level up that way.

Risen 3 is not a bad game but it's definitly not a good one either. The graphics and voice acting are fine and exploring the islands is pretty fun. There is far less obvious issues with the field view than terrible console ports like Dead Rising 3 which are bound to make people used to playing on PC FOV violently sick until a patch shows up. So for a cross platform title it is better than most in terms of not being unplayable.

I find it runs fine and have found no bugs but I have a pretty epic rig (Multi Titans blah blah). Epic job for a console port which are so often a bug filled mess or just outright lie in their marketing.

Game play = Mediocre. It does seem to be a reasonably large game environment when you first look at it. Then your realise, you already have a bit of DLC with it and actually what you have is a few small islands. So it is actually quite small in terms of game real estate to explore. Having said that, people are so used to being ripped off by anything cross platform in terms of the playable hours they will get out of the experience that it is fair to say, many games are far worse (The Witcher 2 etc) There is a bit of an open world feel but you quickly realise there just isn't much to do or anywhere new to do it. NPCs are extremely wooden and have a bit of quirky dialogue but in the main are very static. They do not actually DO much.

Combat = Awful. Role around on the floor a lot. My god, it is the worst thing about this game (other than being a bit on the small side) This is a combat lead game so one would have thought some innovation might have taken place since Risen 2. One thing I do like is enemies are less predictable so most of the time the same formula isn't guaranteed to work every time on the same mob type but your options as a player character are just not there. You do not feel involved at all.

I liked the intro music and I like the game enough to continue playing but more because of the links with the first game in the series which brings the odd moment of nostalgia but really it is another very light weight console friendly unit shifter. This has been made to appeal to the console RPG demographic (20-30 hours game time max) than the PC RPG gamer expecting longevity and depth.

The plot is ok. More of the same but the motivations and way the quests link in is a bit odd at times but its entertaining enough.

Levelling up and character development has the same issues as Risen 2. I actually never thought it was terrible in Risen 2 but it is limited and uninspiring for the most part.

I suspect even console gamers are getting tired of very shallow RPG games but it was not the worst console ported RPG I have seen. (TW2 goes down as one of the worst for me) At least Risen 3 doesn't have that "Press" X or Y or Z" to dodge or do something critical in a very scripted way during boss encounters etc. Points for that and the environment.

Personally I like pirate themed games (Except Assasins Creed Black Flag) but this was just way to juvenile and Disney but then I sort of expected a kids game as it was console lead. Overall, it does have some charm and it is one of the few console ports I might make it to the end of but 6 is a very fair score in my opinion.

Environment and level design has something going for it.

It was made because "it had to be made", even if the developer had no idea what to do and probable knew it shouldn't do it after all. And the players had to play it, just to examine why it's dead and why this developer shouldn't be making any more games.
It looks like a mix of different ideas, that were put in one box without no one checking if it works. A shame.

Not one. Hell, I can't even tell the difference between most of them because they all look and sound pretty much the same. In fact, this game reuses character models and even entire villages from Risen 2. Why? Because it is Risen 2! Zero effort, and no improvements what so ever! Combat is a joke. It's one button and a block. I'm serious. And because of this, combat is extremely hard, and not in a challenging, tactical way like in Dark Souls, it's just impossible to beat anything other than rabbits because they have light and heavy attacks, and you don't! The game randomly picks for you. Stupid. Also, the graphics are still as crappy as Risen 2, with low res textures and some just ugly environments. Boss battles are QTE's. That's it. Unfortunately, there are also quite a few bad fundamental flaws. Combat (which is always an important aspect of any rpg) is clunky and uninspired. It plays like a bad hack-and-slash. fight AI isn't great (and your companions usually make you feel like a second-rate tank).

It is easy to fall into the trap of not liking the game from the outset - but further play through (up to the point of joining a collective, i.e. Demonhunters, Guardians, Pirates, etc.) changes the game-play (especially the lack-lustre fighting) incredibly. For those who have already bought the game and junked it before joining a collective, i would recommend giving it another shot and working towards getting into a collective before passing full judgment.

The inventory and UI is an absolute mess and terrible to navigate. Having only one hotbar also doesn't work well when there are so many different weapons to switch through (leaving no space for spells/potions/etc).

While there is a huge amount of content, a lot of it is also very superficial.

And some of the worst voice-acting/overs this side of the known universe.

That said, it has its saving graces and hopefully patches will help smooth the combat and make it more appealing. Probably not entirely worth it at the release price but well worth considering if it goes on sale.

Now, the combat style. Piranha bytes is known for their weird combat style, but that doesn't mean it went bad in this game. Someone may like it, someone not, I personally find it quite tactical, that you don't just keep bashing NPCs until they die.
What can be annyoing on Risen 3 is that almost every monster or animal attacks you when you come near and there's A LOT of monsters or animals, so if you gonna play Risen 3, prepare to fight everytime you move.

Visuals:Strangely, some areas look ok to good, others outright suck. The water looks good, everything else not.Rocks for example look really terrible.Sometimes they blend so bad in with the backround that everything "melts" together.Hurts the eyes, really! There is an issue with the settings for the shadows. If you reduce it to a certain level youll have little squares all over the place. Its annoying. What is good, the games will run on every machine out there.I heard some complains about the performance on some systems, got no problems myself though.

Sound:This is really strange. Its a german game and the german voiceover is sooooooo bad.The english too, no question. The cast for the voices was not very motivated, you can hear that.Maybe because the dialogues are so cheap and bad written. The music, i dont know, the best youll ever hear in the game will be the theme in the menu. The enviromental sounds are......not there i think. There is a jungle, it doesnt sound like a jungle. There is a isle with a vulcano and a stream of lava in the middle of the isle, even there its quiet and suddenly some noises pop in when you come nearer. Its cheap, sorry.

Gameplay:Storytelling was never a strong point of PB-Games.That was interesting back when Gothic 1 was freshly out.Now its 2014.No evolution in that point. The story is boring at best. The cheap dialogues really heard here too.Its not engaging, no NPC is memorable.Bad for the story and the world.I couldnt care less about this world. Here, games like Mass Effect set a standard i think in terms of dialogues and interesting NPCs.So, the story is bad?How about the strong point of PB Games?Exploration!Yeah this is kinda gone as a strongpoint. The game is cut into pieces with the isles. You have some isles and not a complete world. Its not that much to explore. If you explore, you find SOMETHING, but that something is not really of importance.Youll find some quests out in the wild, ok but they are not really rewarding. The quests are a problem of their own.Boring at best. They feel like MMO quests.Fetch and bring, kill 10 monsters.Cheap, lazy. What really pisses me of is the combat system. Some claimed it is frustrating.Yes and no!Look some reviews, like angry Joes.He suckz at risen. In the first hours you need to duck and roll.Than its really an easy game, youll look through the enemy movement after minutes and know when they attack.I NEVER died in the game because of a fight. There are some imbalances in the system.Like the daggers, they are too strong.Better than magic i think(at least better than the demonhunter magic).

All in all, this game is lazy.50€ is too much.Where the production time went into? Not the story, not the quests, not the combat.Nothing is new, nothing is fresh. The game is a solid 5/10 but there is the issue with the laziness and the DLC problem. They cut out content and reuse many things from Risen 2.This is a no go!!!For that, its just a 3/10!!!!

Personally I loved the Main character's voice in the Gothic Series, but the voiced used in "Titan Lords" makes me cringe every time i hear it, almost making me mute the sound all together,

The Graphics are outdated, however this hasn't been a problem for me in the previous games Piranha Bytes have made, i feel as if the other disappointing aspects of the game allowed for the realization of how terrible the graphics of the game I'm playing is.

The combat system seems worse than that of Risen 2, finding myself randomly swinging in certain directions and "barrel rolling" everywhere in order to dodge the rapid attacks the monsters i was fighting, which reminds me of the terrible combat in Gothic 3 against monsters (them repetitively jumping back)

First off, i can't believe they went through with this cheap, clichéed voice acting. It sounds like something out of a poor porn-movie. And i am not even joking.

Just the voice acting alone makes me want to turn the game off - and i have done so every time now.
I am directly embarrassed every time characters in this game opens their mouth to speak.
It's like they say the most obvious, silly things all the time. Are they trying to annoy me?

The inventory system seems to be ported straight out of Risen 2. It's kind of cluttered and messy compared to Risen 1.

Combat feels clumsy, and animations seem poor. Just try to jump, and see how it slows down and floats like you somehow slow down time while mid-air.

Textures seem poorly done, as you can often see "smeared" and warped textures all over. And the resolution seem to be low and badly applied many places.
    Including characters.

This was really bad, and I am very certain i won't even finish this game.
Sadly, as i had looked forward to this one.

I think the main problem is that they try to hard to please us, and just end up halfways on so many points, that the overall presentation of the game is quite low.

I can't believe they expect to sell me this in 2014. And i am not really being cruel here.

It just seems very bad and rushed. Maybe they try to hard to please critics, and end up working too hard in the wrong places...

Massive failure in my eyes. It's quite a shame for the Risen series, really.

Please don't try again. Just make something else, you are killing Risen.

The game is gorgeous. Sunlight/Godrays crash through the canopies of the trees; distant mountains cast their shadow on distant land realistically; fire never looked as good; water makes you want to jump right in; distant ruins beckon you to explore them; higher tier armour -- the cloth properly dancing as you move, the steel reflecting the light -- makes you drool as you stare at your hero. The physics engine is also fluid and realistic, enemies falling back after having received their killing blow will tumble over objects or droop down from them.

    Gameplay
It's still what you expect from any Risen or Gothic game: The HUD is simple, and that's perfectly fine. In fact, I wouldn't have it any other way. You can now also change into a parrot with scrolls that you'll find everywhere -- specifically in high places! -- the devs silently begging you to use them as turning into a parrot makes you glide however long you want. There's a little energybar nonetheless which will slowly empty whenever you want to fly upward. It's fun! And as for the combat...

    Combat
It has improved SO MUCH! If you time your attacks properly, you can swing with heavy attacks almost as fast as you would with normal attacks. This needs some practise, but once you get a feel for it, it becomes easy. For some too easy, though many players still think combat is hard. As you gain enough experience (or Glory) you'll be able to gain the Riposte skill, which, if you time it right, your parry will execute a sweet animation of your hero evading a strike and counter-attacking with a strike of his own. You can also still dodge, which is an ability that can be exploited since there's no stamina bar. I say exploited, because during a dodge you're practically invincible. A fantastic addition to the combat is the finishing move on humanoids. When you kill the last enemy in an encounter, you watch your character execute him. There are multiple finishers. Your hero pushes an enemy against a wall, rams his weapon's hilt into the face multiple times before running him through; your hero turns the enemy around and slits his throat, etc. etc. etc. My most favorite finisher is where the enemy runs toward the hero and the hero steps aside at the last moment, leaving his weapon stretched horizontally in the enemy's path... the enemy runs into the blade, stumbles past the hero and eventually drops on the ground a few strides further, quite dead. Imagine stuff like this with a perfect physics engine. Yes, if there's a ledge a few strides behind your hero in said finisher, the enemy will stumble and drop down the edge instead. Deader than dead. So awesome.

    Exploration
There's so much to see and do and find in this game! Almost every NPC with a name (which is almost every NPC) has a quest or more quests. When you climb up a mountain and see these mysterious places in the far, far distance... well, that telltale feeling rushes through every RPG player -- the feeling that says: I NEED to go there and explore every nook and cranny! And I can guarantee: You WILL be rewarded for it.

    Final verdict
I love this game. I am not kidding. It's the best thing in the gaming world that has happened to me in YEARS. And that's coming from a guy who fell in LOVE with Gothic 1 & 2, Risen 1 and very much disliked Risen 2. I catch myself playing this game with a content smile on my face. It's crazy. This game is phenomenal!

The first couple of hours in Risen 3 and I can honestly tell you it was no cakewalk; you'll
reload quite often, combat is more of a chore than fun, and enemies are totally unforgiving. Even rats and monkeys can pose a huge threat to you early game. But thats all solely caused by Risen's steep learning curve it provides.

reload quite often, combat is more of a chore than fun, and enemies are totally unforgiving. Even rats and monkeys can pose a huge threat to you early game. But thats all solely caused by Risen's steep learning curve it provides.

Many enemies are unfair since their attack animations are 2-3 times faster than yours and they will gang on you - especially spiders. Yes, it is hard early on, but with enough patience, sooner or later, when your main character learns the necessary combat skills, your character's movement becomes more faster. Nonetheless, Combat centers around carefully timing your attacks and dodging frequently(you'll spam the evade button a lot, believe me). Sadly, the attack animation in Risen 3 is fairly slow, and you'll see the same three hit animation from....any humanlike NPC or enemy who has a weapon equipped(Pirates, guards, bandits, shadow warriors etc) including yourself. In the game, you'll encounter potential buddies to bring along in your crew. They are all unique in their own ways and usually comment on the current location or situation you're in. And most of the time , its hilarious.

On some occasions, the game did remind me of Gothic(since it IS from the same developer); the different factions you can join and their specific armor you can get by joining them, the points of interest to explore and the vast amount of side quests.

Several side quests consists of mini-games however most of them which aren't THAT engaging and are usually pretty easy. Knife-throwing, arm-wrestling, drinking alcohol challenges, and even the lockpicking mechanism itself is a mini game. However, completing them does fetch you some nice EXP(or Glory, as it is called in Risen) and gold, so you might want to consider doing them. There are even naval combat which is quite annoying in my opinion - and they can't be avoided.

The storyline is...well, fairly dull and uninteresting. The hero loses his "soul" and is an empty "moving shell"; literally a zombie. He then goes on a journey to islands to fetch powerful magic users to help him become human again. Sounds rather cliche, right? In the end, I was more hooked into customizing my hero's stats and skills. The game becomes addictive once your avatar unlocks more skills. In terms of playability, I did experience two or three crashes and occasional freezes from time to time, which forced me to restart my PC. All in all, it wasn't entirely frustrating. So my advice? Just save often.

Final words: You might find Risen's generic-looking main menu(even some indie titles I've played were presented better)tad boring and the storyline which isn't unique. In terms of gameplay its difficult early on but trust me, this game could actually be worth any RPG fan's time, if they have the patience.

Bottom-line: Anyone who lacks the patience and just "simply want to jump into the action" parts should stay away.

Highs: + Very rewarding + Can be addictive + Decent graphics + Deep skill/ability customization + Interesting and hilarious crew members

Lows - Steep learning curve - Enemies are very unforgiving - Dull storyline - Lacking attack animations - Mini-games are too easy Collapse

Risen 3 is an old-school RPG - decisions matter, live or die. Pick your fights carefully, especially at the beginning. Character divergency is therefore slower than with a class based system, but markedly faster than with the first Risen.
A small boat, a single companion and 6-8 coasts to explore give an open world feeling. Day/night cycle has impact on monster behaviour and quests. Locations range from vulcanic to moderate to tropical, graphics are ok.
You will eventually hire more crew, with special abilities and some quests, and get a bigger ship from your choosen faction. There are again 3 factions to join, for spells, equipment and tuition.
PB specific, you'll explore the NPCs and their stories like the locations, questing for teachers, traders and supplies.
Unlike the "pirates of the carribbean" rip-off risen 2, the game is back to high fantasy. There's still pirates though; and more scripted sea battles and sea monster fights than other bosses.

Main weapon choices are melee with 3 subclasses, or guns and spells.
Close combat is a rare mix of stats (weapon, skills, perks) and actual personal skill; and feels like fencing. As your character grows, he will learn more perks like counterattack, faster attacks or some spells that allow him to better regain and keep the initiative. Better weapons and skills cause more damage per hit.
Enemy animations signal if they're about to attack or hard-hit or cast. This allows an experienced player to go on hard where a casual player struggles on easy. Enemy patterns can be exploited, too. Playing casually is still possible if you accept that you lack the fighting edge and play carefully.
Guns and spells as main weapons can't block attacks, so you must hit hard, evade and use a meat shield. Only mage guardians seem to offer a main spell from the start.

Story is fine; you don't know what is actually going on for a long, long time...
I prefer english over german voice acting, even though the fist companion's voice is annoyingly doddery.

    + open, diverse world
    + extremely immersive gameplay
    + I actually like the combat :P
    - sea fight balance (got over with some on easy)

But lazy dudes just recycled Risen 2 (which was bad taken game overall) and makes something "nah, Risen 2.5 done, just give us money, we are back to roots!" Horrible game. Which is unfortunate, because I actually enjoyed the graphics and the character animations. I thought the game had an interesting story and interesting characters.

The combat/gameplay however is absolutely horrendous. This is easily the WORST combat I have ever seen in a game, in my entire span of gaming. It completely ruins the experience. It's not fun, it's tedious.

As for the combat, all I can say is that it works. It's not great but it feels more fluid and responsive than in previous PB games. The "game journalists" that called Skyrim "game of the year and all years" have really no right to complain about combat in another RPG. If anything, the combat in Risen 3 feels very easy even on the hardest difficulty, especially if you have a companion with you. The reintroduction of magic also offers more variety in the ways you choose to engage your enemies. Overall I found Risen 3 to be a solid RPG. It's not as good as the first 2 Gothics but I found it a lot more enjoyable than other AAA releases in the last few years. Expand

Just like in previous games, xp is awarded for killing creatures and completing quests, but this time it can be freely distributed among a number of attributes, such as close combat, thievery or magic. Increasing the attributes takes progressively more xp. Based on the skill level, character can purchase additional perks, typically for 500-2000 gold, which makes money very valuable.

I don't remember much about Risen2 - never finished that game, and this time you are given companions too. Admittedly, they make combat a bit too easy. Bons, the first companion not only heals you, but is also dealing major damage and tanking. I've seen him killed once by 3 minions.

The game has full voice acting, and dialogue is decent. I don't get why people don't like it - it's exactly the same style as all the previous Gothic style games. Gruff main hero, cursing, swearing, mostly male voices. The bons companion is rather funny, as he keeps reminiscing of ritual sacrifices and likes dark scary places.

There's maybe 8 different islands to explore, and they are all pretty large, with diverse landscape, caves, hills, etc. The new "parrot" spell makes some locations only accessible via limited flight. Some areas are clearly more dangerous than others.

The game has a crafting system with a number of crafting stations - forges, artificing, jewelry, brewing, alchemy, scrollmaking and vodoo. From what I've seen so far, crafting requires a recipe and ingredients.

Just as in previous games, the amount of armor and weapons available to the hero is pretty limited. There are some pirate clothes, but they are outclassed by the "wanderer" uniform I found myself wearing right after the first island. The majority of swords were inferior to the sword I bought on the second island I visited.

I don't know why people call this story a cliche, I think it is rather good - I was thinking "why am I given a character which seems quite advanced right off the start of the game".... What happened next was quite surprising.

Overall, I think the game is worth the 50$, even if it is to support the "open world" PC games.

PS. I'm liking this more than Skyrim.

Anyway at the start the game is hard, and the thing i dont like in a rpg is that u have to depend on your crewmate to tank all the dmg while u stand behind the monster loading up attacks and the monsters attack the one who is closest and attacks them, their attack pattern is just broken at start, the boss fight are taking right from an mmo no inovation, the last boss is a joke, and the ending was awful. So the game is hard as hell at the start and u will die alot if you don't have bones tanking all the damage. the problem is after you manage to survive and you start to lvl up your melee and get a good weapon then the game becomes tooooo easy.

after 10 hours i had good weapon and much glory in melee i just wrecked everything until the last boss then the powerspike comes hes hard as hell and annoying as hell.

the voice acting is soo bad makes it hard to believe this game came out 2014, as many say yes, he sounds like he has throat cancer, and there is nothing interesting about the main character i have no idea why they decided to not continue the game with the protagonist from risen 1 and 2 atleast u could listen and not skip all the conversations.

Everyone is boring as hell there is no interesting character maybe mendoza from first risen but rest are awful. And oo did you notice patty managed to grow like 5-7 sizes of boobs in 1 game.

for 49:99 dollars this game is not worth it. this game will only be worth buying when it costs like 10-15 euro on steam.

As someone else said, the hate is a bit hard for me to understand.
I'm a fan of the first Risen game but not so much the second one. This game has the good parts from Risen 1 combined with the good parts from Risen 2. The combat is a blast and at first a bit hard to grasp. It is rather similar to that of the Dark Souls franchise, for those who haven't played previous games in the series.

The story in Risen 3 is wonderful and keeps you going through the entire game.

The one thing that always brings the Risen franchise down though, is the abundance of bugs. The first Risen game was buggy, the second one was too, and so of course this one has a number of bugs. Most of the bugs that I've seen are connected to the fact that you can climb pretty much anything. Essentially because of the lack of invisible walls. Now don't get me wrong, the lack of invisible walls is a GREAT thing! It weighs up for the bugs with an interactive game world that is only matched by games such as The Elder Scrolls series and perhaps Fallout.

Risen 3 provides a lot of freedom to do whatever you want. It's a vast and rich world which you are able to explore freely. It has just enough linearity to keep it from becoming one of those open-world games where you travel the world not knowing what to do.

I'll have to admit, even as a Risen fan, I wasn't prepared for a good game when I first bought it. Since it's predecessor wasn't what I expected, I wasn't expecting much from this one either. The only thing that made me buy it was that I wanted to try out some new hardware, and boy was it a good choice!
Thank you Deep Silver for a really nice RPG. Try to fix the bugs for your future games and I'm sure you'll get a 10/10.

Risen 3 isn't a 10/10 game, if that's what you're expecting, you will be disappointed.
If you on the other hand are looking for an epic pirate/fantasy game with the right amount of difficulty and freedom to keep you going for a long time, this is the game for you!

I was terribly disappointed, the early parts of the game were much better in terms of gameplay, and in terms of dialogue. Can not even download it, waste of time.

Like other said, I put this a 10/10 so because of all the zero's that are about there, Risen 3 Titan Lords is in fact, a great game, there are a few things that makes the game better and that it is not like a Risen 2.5.

    - Jumping finally has animations, jumping forward in risen two was just bending one of your knees and that's it. -You can swim again in this game, which is pretty

    - Jumping finally has animations, jumping forward in risen two was just bending one of your knees and that's it.
-You can swim again in this game, which is pretty useful.
-you have a new ability, called Astral Vision, and if you upgrade it you will be able to find hidden chests, gold, plants etc.
-you can use magic in each faction, I always loved using magic in a PB game so for me it's a plus.
-More flora and fauna, parrots flying around.
-You can turn into an evil person (shadow) or a human, depending if you're nice to people or not, which makes dialogue more interesting and you should be careful of what you say.

and a few more things, but can't think of it now, like I said 10/10, a score of 5.2 is not what this game really deserves, you just didn't play it too much, or you only played the beginning saying that it's a pirate game.

I don't get why Risen 2 got so much hate and neither do I understand why this one receives such low scores, especially from PB fans. If you want another Gothic 2, then this is not it. If you did not like Risen 1 and 2, you won't like this one as well. If you did like the previous games, then why the hell are you still reading these reviews? Go get yourself Risen 3. It's an order.

The aesthetics look amazing!

I was expecting this to be a very bad game since Risen 2 was a total failure for me with it's pirate theme, but since I heard that developers went to the roots, I started looking for that Gothic 2 feeling, and I found it and even more. Adventures, challenges, a lot of death and missteps :) This is the most interesting game in this year so far that got me into the game for a very long time :) Thank you Piranha Bytes for this!

if you can stomach the horrible combat without tearing out your hair you will eventually join a faction. now, what factions do is break the game. after you join a faction combat then becomes a joke with all these spells that completely break any sort of balance this game might of had, which was pretty much no balance at all. anyway, you get these spells that make combat go from incredibly frustrating to incredibly easy and even more **** boring. you get spells that give you ridiculous attack speed, spam able range attacks that mop the floor with groups of enemies and other things that make it so you'll never have a challenge again.

i've never seen a game that missed "it" quite like risen 3. it does nothing well and the game design is so blatantly schizophrenic that pb must have been doing heroin when they developed this game. i'm not even trying to be a sensationalist here, but this is one of the worst games of all time. STAY AWAY.

Terrible dialogs and voice acting. Graphics is hit & miss. Some of the monster models and animations are quite good, foliage can be quite convincing as well but quite often you will encounter low res textures, poorly done depth of field effect and general blurriness.
Still game is fun to play and despite all has much less bugs than Skyrim.

It starts kinda slow. In the beginning, you're bound to always having a partner because otherwise you'd be way too weak to kill anything.

/ Graphics are really outdated in mi opinion, but that doesn' really hurt the game.
    - The english VO sounds terrible. I reinstalled and switched to german and it was way better. (Though most of the people will have to play it with english VO)
    - Combat is really boring until you join a guild and learn some spells.
    - Crafting too simple

+ The world is pretty. It's kinda big, but not that big. It's ok-size.
+ It's non-linear. You can go whereever you want, whenever you want and keep switching between islands. Of course there are quests that require to have some previous stuff done, but you can start anywhere you like.
+ Character skill system is ok. You earn experience and use that experience to level up things like Meleedamage, Rangedamage, Defense, etc. Abilities are still learned the same way as previous games. (They literally havn't changed that since Gothic, still the same through dialogs)

The thing about the game is, some will hate it, some will love it. As I've already completed the game, I played for around 10hrs/day on average this past weekend so I can safely say I liked it.

P.S Reading some of the user reviews gives me cancer. It's sad that there are so many trolls. This game is by no way a masterpiece nor GOTY, but it should be a solid 7. Also people giving it a 10... c'mon, be realistic. Even though it seems to be necessary to counter the troll votes.

The combat system is totally alright, but a little bit unbalanced. I can win almost any fight by just rolling around waiting for my partner to kill them all. When you get to the point, where you do actually some damage, you can just roll-hit-roll-hit-roll-hit. You disable blocking and parrying with this powerful roll. But the combat system, if not abused, is still working great and is fun. I like the possibility to win every sword fight without any skillpoint.
Now the bad stuff. It is more of an gothic 2-piranha bytes issue. You can do better guys. The main story is great, but the world around doesn't change. You don't get new quest, when proceeding with the main story. You can do all the side quests first and then stomp the main story. No problem. The world doesn't feel alive. Sure it is open world. But open world doesn't mean that you can do every little quest at any time. Open World means you have no barriers to go everywhere.

But the game fails to deliver the kind of polish and value that Gothic II had relative to its predecessor. I was hoping for a 'fixed' Risen 2 with improved combat and story/content etc, but instead I got Risen 2's expansion pack. There's a bit right with the game in that it checks all the boxes of the franchise you've come to expect, but its not quite there in terms of polish. I feel this game was released about a year too soon. There are a lot of really obvious graphical problems. Even on solid hardware busy fights will appear to tax the system. Occasional textures do not load. The games combat system is worse than Risen 2. I have no idea why they didn't just go back to Risen 1/Gothic II style of combat as that was functional, fun to play, and rewarding to master. There is a mess of content here for fanboys like myself, and I'll probably play through it more than once, but honestly, if you're a Gothic/Risen fan, wait for a 50% sale and replay Risen 1 and/or Gothic II again for your fix and wait until there are some fixes. Perhaps the only graphical improvement is the only thing I turn off in every game -- the foliage. The game is enjoyable, but I don't think it lives up to what I expected from this studio. If you need your Gothic fix, load up Gothic II or III, or Risen 1, and wait for a Steam sale. Expand

Some people complain about the combat, but I find it refreshing in a "If I die, it is my own fault" way. Enemies don't hold back, so you must find their patterns and weaknesses. Through careful observation this can be done. It's a demanding combat system, and simply hacking away will almost always spell disaster.
The environments are gorgeous, but the characters live in the uncanny valley. It appears there is no level scaling and you're not punished for bringing companions along. You also have an unlimited inventory!

I have played through the first island and a bit of Antigua. Not a lot, but I did see a few bugs. Mostly with quest specific dialogue triggering out of place and a few graphical glitches. Nothing game breaking - but something a bit more QA could iron out. It certainly won't keep me from playing the game.

All in all it seems like a good game with a steep combat learning curve. Dark Souls fans probably will feel right at home :)
Severe competition is on the horizon. Dragon Age and Witcher 3, though still several months away both of them. Until then, this game will be perfect for when I am not playing Divinity:Original Sin.

    7. Terrible melee combat that involves spamming dodge more than striking your opponent.

Yes, the combat system still has it's issues. Especially not putting a cooldown or at least an animation on the instant-heal items and to allow infinite dodge-rolls trivializes most of the fights. This is just a bad design decision, one you can't forgive in times where Dark Souls&Co show how it's done right.

But it is still a great game. The combat system and abrupt ending are the only real problems.
People who complain about monsters having too much life or enemy attacks being too fast just did not understand how this game works. Being a total weakling at the games start is a crucial part of the mechanic. You are supposed to avoid enemies that are too strong - a concept that everyone asked for when they complained about level adjusting elder scrolls monsters. It takes 10-15 hours of gameplay before you can deal with all the enemies you encounter. Reaching this point always was what made prevoius PB games fun and for me it still works.

The Germans took a step back and reintroduced more of the distinctive atmosphere of the Gothic series and the first Risen, which is a huge advantage for me. The world is so vivid and lively that it really makes you want to be there and see as much of the vast content as possible. It’s a shame that the game’s engine is visibly aging and the story lacks the punch. [10/2014, p.48]
