    I lost track of how many times I've played this game. It's an old friend that I like to revisit every couple of years. Yeah, sometimes it's corny, like a bad hollywood movie, but that's part of it's charm. Few games have got everything so nearly right, the pacing, the not too shabby AI, the graphics that still hold up today. It's a timeless masterpiece.

    Great! id software again proves they know their stuff with the return to castle wolfenstein. The Graphics are great (theyre based on the quake III engine cmon now) the sound effects, although some of the guns sound kinda funky, everything else is pretty good. Quite a dark game really, its fun though. The music is ehhh its not the best but it gets the job done, the voice acting, what Great! id software again proves they know their stuff with the return to castle wolfenstein.     Amazing game. I can back to Castle Wolfenstein even today. It's one of these games I can't forget and if you play this game, you won't forget also. Fighting Nazis isn't the only 1 thing we do playing this game. We can also get a bit scaried in a few moments and it made me suprised when I was playing it for the first time. I really wanna back to the past..... RTCW Forever.

Sure it doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it is based on a classic, and it is fun to play. If you just want to sit back and immerse yourself into a not-so-realistic time when Nazi's were a threat to the free world, and you want a mindless shooter where youI'm not sure why anyone would give this game a negative review, but it looks like a couple people showed up to do so.     One of the best FPS games I have ever played. It has fantastic atmosphere, good pacing, interesting bosses, quite clever AI. The graphics and map design are quite good. Weapon selection is interesting.

    It is a game you definitely want to return to some day. Because one does Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

    What an incredible game it was! Played it for hours and hours and completed it multiple times. The best Wolfenstein game and probably the best WW2 game out there. The new Wolfenstein games try to do too much and end up disappointing.

    What a cool atmosphere this game had.

    I was amazed at the imagination of the developers, how it was possible to combine the setting of the Second World War and add such a creepy atmosphere. I really felt the enormity of what was happening. Creepy bosses that you were imbued with and knew in advance who you were fighting (well, almost everywhere)

    Great starting of a game, but really gets dull once you get past the begining. Runing around just pumping zombies full of lead without having to think really brings this down.

    Great game. Prior to HL2 and Far Cry, this was the best around imho. Great shooter, no tricky puzzles to figure out, but a great fighting game.

    A good plot, many weapons, non-stop action, great multiplayer. The only thing that falls down a bit is the singleplayer. Good at the start, but the fun factor starts to slowly deteriorate after. Worth the time and money.

    Steeped in the atmosphere of WWII with responsive and intuitive character controls, this game put the "F" in FPS (First Person Shooters). Those who cut their teeth on Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D and Soldier of Fortune will appreciate this game as a fitting capstone for the games that paved the way.

    My favorite shooter of all-time. The movement is fast and fluid. The story is fun and faithful to the series. The game has charming NPC dialogue, great level design (aside from Forest), a wide variety of enemy types, high energy soundtrack, god-tier replayability because of how different each mission is, good strong weapon sounds (aside from the Luger), I could go on and on. On an evenMy favorite shooter of all-time. The movement is fast and fluid. The story is fun and faithful to the series. The game has charming NPC dialogue, great level design (aside from Forest), a wide variety of enemy types, high energy soundtrack, god-tier replayability because of how different each mission is, good strong weapon sounds (aside from the Luger), I could go on and on. On an even more subjective note, I love the look of the game and think it's beautiful. Multiplayer was so good, too, and was very influential.     Beautiful shooter classic! Immerse yourself into brilliantly crafted open levels and kick some racist nazi ass!

    Unfortunately some enemies are extremely bullet spongy and it needs work to run on current resolutions but otherwise its an FPS-Must play!

    This is the Game that convinced me that a computer game could be real entertainment. Even in 2012 this game can still hold its own with far more advanced games... why? Story, Story, Story!!! This is the only game that has ever creeped me out, and to this day when I replay it (which I do often) I still get a shiver down my back (try playing the 3rd chapter of the game in a dark houseThis is the Game that convinced me that a computer game could be real entertainment. Unlike its sequel, RtCW is a very linear game with a little room to explore, and although most modern games have abandoned this approach, I think it can be the superior model simply because it lets the game tell a cohesive story. As for the multi player aspect... if you can still find a server that is hosting a game, you will have a hard time not to have fun. Yes the graphics are dated by today's standards... but although I may be biased, I simply dont notice them. I can count on one hand the number of games I have played all the way through more than once, but I can not count how many times I have played RtCW all the way through.     look at all the great reviews ! yes, this is my favorite video game of all time, and I have played it over like 10 times. Fighting the Nazis and their weapons of destruction has never been so realistic, and interesting! BJ Blaskowicz is the greatest. You get to see castles, airfields, radar installations, super soldiers, a secret base in norway, and various locations in Germany. Excellent game!

    This game offered some intense and fun gameplay with good game mechanics. Back in 2001 it had great graphics and gameplay I had never experienced before. Spent so many hours playing it that I managed to play from start to finish way over 30 times. I don't think there ever will be a game that in my opinion is better than this.

    A classic. Can't say much about the multiplayer as I haven't spent a lot of time on it, but the campaign was almost infinitely long by today's standards and kept the player entertained and wanting more throughout. I would even recommend it today to someone who wants to enjoy a thrilling long FPS story.

Fast, skill-based combat, clever enemy AI (for the time), and a great variety of weapons and enemies to use them on. While the graphics may be dated when compared to modern FPS games like Crysis 2, everything is still presentable and easy to forgive as you mow down Nazis with your lightningSimply put, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the pinnacle of old-school first-person shooters. The controls are tight and easy to grasp, making shooting feel that much better. While I've never really thought much about plot in most Id games, RTCW actually does have a rather decent, though shallow, story that you'd expect from an 80's action movie. The Nazis have found the tomb of an ancient and evil knight and are planning on resurrecting him to turn the tide of the war. Catching on to this, the OSA sends in B.J. Blaskowicz, Nazi-killer extraordinaire, to investigate and ultimately put a stop to their plans. The game sends you to a variety of locations as you ultimately ruin the day of every inhuman son of a (this includes Nazis) you come across. You'll be fighting zombies in ancient crypts, putting down X-creatures in Deathshead's secret lab, and of course killing every Nazi that crosses your line of sight. There are (de)briefings between missions to give you a run down of what you're there for and clipboards that you can pick up to give you some insight on the events in the game. You'll have no shortage of weapons in this game. In true Id fashion, you'll have access to a plethora of guns ranging from the boring and practical MP40 to the lead-spewing instrument of concentrated whoop-ass, called the Venom minigun, which can gib any enemy held under it's sustained fire. By now, this game should be relatively cheap to buy. If you get the chance, and have always been curious about old-school shooters, try it out.… Expand

    What a game, I love the movie features loaded into the game and the graphics are awsome. I do have one nit pick though. BJ's hair should have been darker like in the original game. Other than that wow!

    Very enjoyable game. No major downsides in my opinion. Well other than some of the voice overs were fairly atrocious. Graphics are getting a bit long in the tooth but that is just fine with me. I am not a big FPS person myself but I have always loved the Wolfenstein series and was thrilled when this was released. Here is hoping to more Wolfenstein games.

    Engaging and gameplay-oriented FPS game that's aged very well. The stealth can be a little janky at times, but I spent most of the time running and gunning anyway.

    Great game overall. I love the single player, although I would have liked it even more if I could have controlled some vehicles, or squad members. I understand this is a "FPS," but it could have been a bit more dynamic. That is the only reason that I'm leaving off the 1 to make it a perfect 10.

    Boring graphics, boring story plot, its makes me wonder if the developers thought the game was boring and out an equal amount of effort into it. If you see Return to Castle Wolfenstein on sale for $5 or $10, it might be worth buying.

    Once you get past the fact it's a new fps and is hard at times... you realize it's really not that great. There's less of a "story" than there is a progression... you get to z point from y action.     One of the best FPS i've ever played in a long time. The graphics were simply awesome; the flames were especially good looking. Really rare to get an FPS with a decent SP plot and play time, so this one's a keeper for me.

The gameplay is pretty good actually. The single player campaign is your typical MoH or CoD-like first person shooter. Only this time it's probably a little longer and it has secrets inside the game. So you guys should have some times and explore around for secrets. In recent Battlefield games, the Single Player campaign isn't that neccessary. But in this game, it's like the half of the game. You are ALMOST alone on this game (most of time yes, but sometimes a friend helps you) and there are soo many Nazis to take down. Things that I have to criticize is probably a fact that the game is very straight forward. So when you missed a secret, it's really a pain to backtrack a straightforward level. And it can gets boring sometimes. I never played multiplayer. Just because I'm too lazy anyway, Overall. RCTW is one of my most favorite game of all time. [9/10] "Amazing"… Expand

    This game was groundbreaking in it's time. And it's also a quite long game, which is a testament how much effort was put into games back in the day with all the different locations and big maps.

    The thing that I didn't like even back in the day, was that you fight more monsters than Nazis, and there isn't much diversity in the human enemies or in their animations.     There isn't also much tactics involved in the firefights. You can peek around corners, but not shoot from that position. Crouching is the only skill in your tactical toolbox.
    There are also a surprising amount of levels which require stealth, and the rules are never really clear if an enemy is able to spot you from a mile away and when they aren't. It's especially frustrating at a certain mission at a prison camp where the mission is immediately over after you get spotted. And sometimes the alarm goes off regardless if you have spent several minutes in a building with no enemies in sight.

    There are also bugs where I had to jump and then immediately crouch to enter a certain building.or opening, and it just wouldn't let me enter, I had to restart the whole mission to pass certain obstacles because of those bugs.

    Overall, this is only for nostalgic players who played this game back in 2001, but for new players there's nothing to see here.    … Expand

I bought the game way back when it had collectors tins and was actually looking forwards to killing Nazi's in a more up to date game. What a massive disappointment this game was.

    The entire plot makes little to no sense the sections with zombie's and the traps where more of an annoyance and the stupid Nazi babe's who are in the game who are turned into vile zombies as well are just eye candy the developer clearly at the time was looking at fetish sites that cater for rich and perverted old men who like nothing better than hot girls dressed in the uniforms of a regime that to all intents and purposes a true evil.

    I am not saying the game has to be realistic but things such as this are jarring and have no place in the kind of understanding of that regime we have today. It was rushed poorly put together the AI at times is stupid that you feel it's just taking the proverbial and yes there are random guard spawns in areas you cleared if you do not keep your wits about you they will pick you off with ease.

    This game is a clear 5 by me why because the developer tried too hard to put the originals ideas into a modern FPS and that won't work. They come from a different era. And making female Nazi's who are sexually attractive is also fairly disturbing.    … Expand

    А зацепила меня атмосфера самой игры. Да, в ней не было, так хорошо прописанных персонажей. Но это игре было и не нужно.    Решил недавно пройти сразу три dlc к Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Вот игра хорошая, вроде придраться не к чему, но чего то не хватает ей. И я решил вспомнить, что меня так зацепило в древней, но до сих пор самой лучшей игре в серии, Return to Castle Wolfenstein!
    А зацепила меня атмосфера самой игры. Да, в ней не было, так хорошо прописанных персонажей. Но это игре было и не нужно. Брифинг перед заданием, заброс в тыл врага и выживай как хочешь. Блажкович сам разбирается во всех тайных делах фашистов и доходит до самого сердца их дьявольского культа.
    Этого и не хватает, лично мне, в новых играх.
    При том в Return to Castle, как мне показалось, более брутальные враги. Это и бронированные мутанты, и какие то мумии-зомби, и даже Генрих Первый есть. В новом Wolfenstein, этого не хватает. А куда делись девки в латексных костюмах?
    Так, что очень жду, может быть выпустят какой-нибудь ремейк Return to Castle Wolfenstein, а что, сейчас это модно!    … Expand

    fortunately there is gog and they fixed it, so the game is working on modern systems. I tried to play in the past but it didnt work.
    So, finally I can play it. The atmosphere is great: very scary and evil. It is a great design choice to mix nazi theme with mystery and steampunk, unique atmosphere. Gameplay is great, graphics also thanks to mods like Real RTCW. AI is very bad.

    This game is probably among the most classical series the game developers have had. The game graphics are only so limit during the time but what amazes me is the whole combat style and layout.

    Last time I played this game was in 2013 and I replayed on my new laptop and it still wasn't old. It was so nice to re-experience the good old moments of killing Nazis in this game. The missions were still enjoyable for me and nothing will stop me to give Return to Castle Wolfenstein an A.     Steeped in the atmosphere of WWII with responsive and intuitive character controls, this game put the "F" in FPS (First Person Shooters).     This is a wonderful game with a lot of cool new features compared to Wolfenstein 3D. The stealth-style missions are pretty wonderful, the enemies aren't dumb, and the story is something you should pay attention to when playing this game. Just remember, it's very, very hard. Go ahead and pick this game up on Steam or something, it's definitely worth a playthrough, trust me.

I enjoyed wolfenstein because the game was different from most shooter back then but not in the first person shooter aspect because there was a lot of those back then but it is different in term of the story of the games. i'm not going to spoil the game because it is to good to be spoiled but can say my favorite boss fight in the game which is the robot boss.… Expand

    It's a classic, still awesome. This game got me into FPS games and not many of those games since were as good. I can now only hope for a proper remaster/mod, because game isn't modernpc friendly and every mod I've tried has certain issues.

    En tout cas, si ça tourne bien (évidemment mais en résolutions 4/3 uniquement), ça se joue peu (ou prout) comme l’antiquité de jadis, à savoir donc qu’on erre dans un labyrinthe (un putain de château) avec plein de nazis énervés dedans et sans aucune carte : autant dire qu’on tourne vite en rond et qu’on commence à se faire chier. Cela dit, ça nous évitera des boss relous trop casse-couilles par la suite, comme on peut s’en douter.

    La jouabilité elle-même est comme je l’ai dit, incroyablement pareille au vieux machin et de fait, incroyablement vétuste, pour ne pas dire surannée et inversement. Il faut dire cela dit, qu’ils ont bossé aussi sur du multi-joueurs à kévins (eh oui déjà, les kévins et les pécédègues bien sûr) histoire de suivre la mode. Du coup, ils avaient plus le temps de faire un jeu solo digne de ce nom…

    A part ça, on note tout de même un sale bug en ce qui concerne le son des flingues qui a un sale temps de retard : c’est très perturbant. Et énervant aussi. Les effets sonores sont d’ailleurs… tous en 22 Khz (bonjour le Moyen Age…!). Et on s’emmerde très vite quand même. M’enfin bref, un retour daubé à la vieille daube, donc, laquelle se hâte vers sa destination finale : la poubelle.    … Expand

Что касается боссов то я бы добавил сложности для прохождения последнего босса, он был даже легче чем 1 босс.     It is great to see what Grey Matter interactive manage to do with Wolfenstein in this entry... The game has a huge variety of maps and each level feels unique from the other.
    The mix of sci-fi with paranormal was well balanced but the paranormal enemies where the most annoying from them all.

    One of the very first shooting games I have ever played. I remember when the Nazi soldier kicked back a grenade - this was so immersive at the time! Still excellent vibe and heavy game atmosphere. Great title!

    Back in the day after Wolfenstein 3D I was happy to see this game. While playing my dad saw the first level and told me there is actually a book of Alistair MacLean featuring very similar moment. That's how I started reading non stop (good way of hooking kids to reading).

    Pros.: - Good old Nazi extermination by our Polish friend. - Occult stuff AND Nazis. - Quite solid gameplay. -    Back in the day after Wolfenstein 3D I was happy to see this game. While playing my dad saw the first level and told me there is actually a book of Alistair MacLean featuring very similar moment. That's how I started reading non stop (good way of hooking kids to reading).

    Pros.:

I have never had a chance to experience what I experienced here in my life with various horror movies, even when I remember the bossfights that terrified me. When I beat the last one, I was glad I had it over with. I don't mean that the game is bad. Not that. It's delicious! I meant that I finally have the fear behind me and that I will be able to rest in peace for the next few days. This game just made me scare like no other! Personally, I would also recommend you if you start the game to get a FullHD patch that will set up a 16: 9 and a mode called Venom, with which I played the game and it will deepen your experience.     RTCW is the peak of the series and one of the most well-honed FPS games in history. The fantastic multiplayer mode, in particular, was incredibly rewarding and engaging. The single-player campaign was excellent as well, carried by a strong atmosphere and simple and addicting combat. This game was simply the full package.

    Тоже что называется "нетленная классика". Отличная совокупность хорошего левел дизайна, гейм дизайна, работы с движком и самого собственно геймплея. Это просто ошуенно. Тут тебе и замок, и подземные раскопы, деревеньки старые, и даже секретные супер пупер лаборатории. Не хочу много писать, это просто однозначная годнота, всем советую. Так же, после ознакомления с оригиналом, рекомендую модТоже что называется "нетленная классика".     My rating is definitely reflected by modern times. Playing this now it does feel a bit simplistic with the combat, mainly minimal gunplay mechanics and level design being a bit static. BUT it does have leaning which is nice. It being in the Source Engine helped as they were able to do some fun things with the environments.

    You’ll be glad to know that the flamethrower isn’t the only great weapon at your disposal. The venom, which is a devastatingly powerful chain-gun, is one of the most amazing guns I’ve ever had the pleasure to handle in a video game.
