REvelations 2 brings series back to its roots. Definitely a huge plus for the franchise on long run. This is what fans were looking for. Fast paced action horror game. I'd gave it 9, however after seeing rivers of negative reviews due to lack of co-op online in campaign I must pull that up to 10. Controls are good, even with such a large number of action keys.

(Nota:575.9 hrs on record)

The big exception to this rule Resident Evil: Revelations 2. It is a horror game, but not in the normal alone-in-the-dark kind of way. The game has you guide two couples through the story. Which is a bit less scary. This could disappoint horror fans, as isolation is a cornerstone in any horror story, but it allows squeamish people like me to play it. Perhaps one can say that it isn't a real horror game?

Revelations 2 strongest part is probably the team system. It should allow the team members to be played by different players in a sequel, but in this one one is controlled by the player and the other by the computer. You can switch between the two at will and you have to, as it will help overcome obstacles. You can also give the other member commands. Each member has certain strengths that you can use to the teams advantage.

The first couple is Claire and Moira. Claire is the older of the two and the fighter. She gets to handle the weapons, such as the pistol and shotgun. Moira is a teen and has some special abilities. She can blind adversaries with her torchlight and has a crowbar that she can use for bashing attacks and followup attacks.

The other couple consists of Barry and Natalia. Barry takes the role Claire has and is the fighter. Natalia, a child of around twelve has special abilities in that she can sense danger, spot treasure and see invisible enemies. She can't fight so Barry has to do all the fighting, but she can tell him where to shoot.

The trick is to have the members of a couple work together. Especially Natalia's ability to see invisible enemies will be important.

Each couple finds itself on the same forlorn island that used to be operated by the Soviets until it was abandoned to the local populace. After a while a group of people representing a company showed up to ostensibly operate the mine. But the inhabitants started to get suspicious when people started to disappear or change. The island itself eventually became dangerous as evil creatures start to roam around.

Claire and Moira are the first on the island because they are kidnapped and locked up in a prison. They manage to escape and try to flee the island but find that the only way to get away is to find the one who is in charge. The path to freedom leads through the heart of danger.

Barry arrives six months later to find Moira, his daughter after she has send out an emergency broadcast. When he sets foot on the island he encounters Natalia. Not knowing what to do with her, he takes her along, and he soon finds out that she can help him with her special abilities.

The nice part in the game is the interaction between the two members of a couple. Especially that between Barry, as a replacement father, and Natalia. Claire and Moira act more like friends. Time is spend on making this connection believable. Another is the one that links Barry with Moira.

The progress over the island is less impressive. There are various dangers, felt more keenly because of the lack of ammunition, especially by the first couple. There some traps, puzzles and boss encounters, nothing really surprising when you think of it, but coupled with the team system it works nicely. The narration isn't top notch for a book or a movie, but for a game it is good.. An additional factor that makes this installment better is that the movie has a different atmosphere as it's direct predecessors. It more resembles the earlier creepy resident evil installments than the action oriented later ones.

The lowdown: Resident Evil Revelations 2 isn't a very remarkable game, but with it's team work mechanism, creepy mood and more story based angle allows for a much needed revitalization of the Resident Evil series. It shows a possible way to go, but it depends Capcom to take that route. Will it improve on this or will it take another road entirely? It remains to be seen.

Plus the monster design was great, and reminded me heavily of The Last of Us which is one of my favourite games of all time. Within 10 minutes of Rev2 you see more interesting and varied enemies than in the entirety of Rev1. The audio was also night and day, the voice actors did a great job in Rev2, and the sound in general was top notch, the guns sounded meaty and the enemies were frightening. The visuals were also massively improved which is to be expected, but it was appreciated, the cut scenes looked especially good. As for the gameplay it was similar just refined, movement felt far less clunky, and I really liked how the partners were treated this time around. They added a bunch of interesting mechanics along the way which kept things fresh. Expand

A hooked story that varies a bit the dynamics of the saga bringing a new virus that, this time, is interesting: the Virus-T Phobos .
The appearance of that character finally reveals some unresolved secrets.

Respite to the gameplay, the camera is not so annoying and the animations have improved a lot, but the gunplay still does not feel good at all.

This games progression & atmosphere feel more in the vein of RE4/5 and not the horrible later outings like RE6/Racoon City. However it is obvious the production value & feeling of being part of something bigger isnt there like it is in RE4/5/6, the story is a much more down to earth version with really minimal twists.

The 4 episodic format feels sadly like a poor excuse from Capcom at gathering in money in a different way, its not well balanced at all in its length like the episodes from RE5 or 6 which felt just right for people to end their game session, this game really needed a extra episode or some message popup when arriving at a new long section of the game like for example "The Sewers" or something. The episodes are way too long on episode 2,3 & 4 especially the ones with Barry/Natalia.

Gameplay alternates between and stealth quite often and actually gives you the feling of conserving ammo unlike RE6 which messed that part up. However the stealth mechanics in this game are rather weak and only really adds to slowing the game down way too much too often along with the re-arrival of one of the worst implementations in the RE Revelations games which is the "Genesis Scanner" from RE:R1 which had your character scanning walls and floors of cleared areas for items. This time its there in a slighlty lighter form by switching your character but is still a weak and annoying gameplay element due to not only taking away from the pace of the game but also making you feel like you are hoarding because you will use it in a game where you might be afraid the game doesnt give you enough ammo and might have to restart a episode & need the BP points in the game from jewels you find this way to upgrade your character throughout the game.

The core gameplay revolves around the switching between your 2 characters in each episode. It really screams co-op if you want to go through the game by yourself sadly due to many annoyances. First of all getting caught by enemies usually locks you up often with their moves which really infuriates you towards your AI partner and secondly the controls are just not very intuitive at all, and with 2 characters to manage it really feels like a artificial way of Capcom to implement panic moments and tension by relying on slow & poorly implemented controls. You never really ever throughout the game feel in control of your actions due to this. Im all in for a 2nd partner in the newer RE games as the dialogue between them and their environments add to the atmosphere and story, but the partner controls should have been left to the AI in singleplayer imo & for people playing it in Co Op.
This is sadly where i feel the RE: Rev. games fail, the partner controls are more of a pacekiller & an annoyance rather than giving you a feel of exploration and immersion it just grows old very quick looking at a barrel at a corner to see if something will glint that you can pickup all the time.

Overall i can only recommend this game if youre going to play co-op, it is just way too slow alone with the partner mechanic, stick to the main series for the solo experiences imo. The story albeit easy to follow does idd feel like its been done before in the series and doesnt add much new to the series. The production value and variation feels cheap, there really isnt any surprises, its all the same type of areas you are accustomed to in the RE games with sewers, labs & construction areas. The enemy variation is surprisingly low and weak, theres like 5-6 types of common type of enemies throughout the entire game which really makes it feel like this game was quickly done and covered in its episodic format so people wouldnt notice these things. Theres only a few bosses and they require minimal wit and tactic which is really dissapointing as the 3D RE games usually require you to use timing and your environment often against the bosses. In this game they really only require you to move around all the time and shoot them to expose their weak points. The last boss in the game especially is action wise dissapointing, it barely does anything against you and just wanders around the level waiting for you to take it out of its misery.

Overall i think its a decent entry to the series after the abonimation that was RCity & Re6 but it is also a game that indicates clearly that Capcom has lost their way and dont really know how capture the control and feel RE4 & 5 had, it feels like a mishmash between poor stealth elements and bad unintuitive controls to create fear & panic, whereas RE4 & 5 was all about the exploration & immersion of the new environments and encountering new types of enemies along with great cinematics and dialogue. This just feels subpar if you have played either of those.

    Do not.

Honestly I think this game is slightly above the original Revelations. I love the gaps it fills in in the universe, and I love all the new characters that get introduced. Some of the areas are very atmospheric and feature music that sets the mood for the creepy atmosphere almost perfectly. However, this aspect is spoiled in the Vita version due to sound compression. There's also set dressing that's missing in that version that I think ads a lot to the overall experience. Sadly, there are still some dumb moments that take me out of the immersion personally. It's not quite Resident Evil 4, but it's damn close.

The gameplay here is some of the best the series has to offer, and it accents this game's Raid mode perfectly. While a lot of level design assets get recycled over and over again in Raid mode, the enjoyable gameplay loop makes it fun to grind despite the repetition. Having the game connected to ResidentEvil.Net and being able to participate in events and reap the rewards also makes the grind less painful (Something the Vita version completely lacks.)

Overall, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a great game in it's own right, but do not play the gimped Vita port. If you're looking for an intense Horror experience, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a great action game with heavy Horror elements, this is for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In general, the plot was interesting and even, almost to the last part of the game, intriguing. Even when the intrigue subsides and everything becomes clear, it is still interesting.
But this is where the positive aspects of the game end and disappointments begin:
    ...
I didn't like the skills system: for me it was almost useless and not interesting. You play for 4 characters and the system is the same for everyone: + 10% damage when crouching, and you play the whole game on the cocks ... + 10% damage on the 1st shot from switching weapons, and you "spin the roulette wheel of your arsenal" for the whole game... +10 % brick damage, + 10% pry bar damage, + 10% knife damage. And so on, and so on ... and in the end you do not get to the most interesting skill, because everything was pulled over by the mediocre ones.
I didn't like the fact that a lot of table boxes or vertical ones are simply empty, and a lot of loot drops are experience stones, not ammunition when there are 2-3 bullets left after the next boss or a crowd of enemies. By the way, yes, TOO much ammo is spent on some bosses in the game, it's not even just survival game-play, but an exaggerated complication by sucking the player's ammunition.
A little girl drags iron boxes - this is laughing through tears for an adequate setting of the plot.
I was pissed off by frequent lags during attacks or enemy aperients, and endless end credits that can't be skipped at the end of the game.
This game is designed exclusively for co-op, although you can switch characters. In solo it is extremely annoying, constant switching, and the constant need to look for hidden objects with that second character.
    ...
I was very disappointed with the last episode.
    1) A piece of a tower fell on the girl (not just a little crushed, but huge blocks fell on her head), but in a good ending she just scratched her leg ... sh*t, because of such a concrete blow, there would be only a wet blood spot from her, what a stupidity?
    2) Barry - a tough "bearded lumberjack - survivalist" by inner nature, suddenly loses his bone spine when he needed to make the last shot at the one who will send the whole World into the zombie abyss, just because this monster moved into a little girl's body. I despise such spineless characters in games/films/books.

    Pros:
    - Old characters: Clair and Barry.
    - New story, simple gameplay, fast, not demanding.
    - Controls are smooth, camera is fine.
    - Two different timelines.

    Cons.:
    - Episodic approach. Annoying to buy the game piece by piece. It should be abandoned once and for all.
    - Game design is pretty poor.

To the features of the game, you can add interaction between the characters, namely switching between them. You will often have to interact with many parts of the "puzzles" using both characters.

The game is great, I am satisfied with everything. There is even an online mode in which you can choose and pump several main characters of the game. Pass there missions in solo or in co-op. The game itself is divided into episodes.

Invisible enemies. Timed Sequences. Boring locations. Getting the good ending unfairly missable. How many players didn’t miss that playing for the first time? 0.1%? What a stupid idea. Good game ruined by a few stupid ideas. Can’t give any higher than 6

A confident mishmash of a few different Resi games. [July 2015, p.70]

Despite its obvious tight budget, Revelations 2 is a much better game than the last offering in the main series, Resident Evil 6.
  3. Capcom doesn’t fund Revelations series properly, so Revelations 2 at times looks too old-fashioned and underpolished, – yet it still manages to be sufficiently tense, difficult and interesting for a series’ fan. [May 2015, p.66]
