I generaly enjoy the game but I realy don't like the levels to be honest. They are pretty linear and you just have to go forward or choose left or right. Not much to explore like in the dark souls series (which is dissapointing for me). I like the gameplay and the movement feel realy smooth, the maps look well and nicely detailed. The story is mixed it's not that interesting so I mean don't get this game for the story. The bosses are interesting (most of them).
I played the game in singleplayer and I enjoyed it and coop with friends makes it even better (even with random people since I don't have any mates to play with right know)
Buy the game on a sale like for 30€ or even 25€ in my opinion it isn't a 40€ game.

This game was fairly boring. The story is simple but the world feels empty and lifeless. The gun fighting is unfair. It takes forever to reload. The enemies appears magically from everywhere, too often from behind. No auto targeting, no difficulty level. The mechanic is there. The upgrades are there but you barely feel them. So my main issue with this game is the story begin as weak as it is. Unless you actually read everything that can be found in the world, you are likely don't have a clue about who your character is and who the people you meet throughout the game are.

The game feels as if the developers just took a bunch of ideas from other games and didn't have much of an original thought themselves.

I am VERY happty, that I got this game for free as I don't personally think it would be worth spending money on.

I only had fun when playing with a full group of friends.

    ****PLAYED ONLY IN MULTIPLAYER****
-very good game play and gun play
Story: i did not care, but it is quite interesting and may be catchy for someone. If not, you can easily just skip it.
I recommend hard difficulty. Not impossible, but challenging.
Do not expect replayability, but in the end of the day it is still nice indie game and with friends you gonna enjoy good experience.

While it's a pretty fun game, it does have a lot of technical issues, and has a tendency to crash frequently. I can't personally recommend buying it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To preface, I'm writing this review because currently I believe due to a recent release this game is getting a lot more praise than it genuinely deserves. Personally while I found the game fun to play at least for one go through, I keep realizing more and more reasons why I am disliking it.

Before getting into all the dislike I will say something positive to justify my rating, which is that the game is fun for the first play through, I thoroughly enjoyed playing the game for the gameplay alone and did have fun, which is why I give it a 5.

However to get to the bad starts getting into both a bit of spoilers and also why I think this game will be forgetting by the end of the coming months (barring any dlc releases).

First and foremost the game is short, and I don't mean like binge playing it through one whole day short, I'm talking a casual sit down with some comfort to the games dodging you can be done with this game in 2 - 3 hours easily. While that isn't necessarily bad as there are games that exist with both short run times and are truly great games (portal comes to mind). The problem with Remnant's run time is the game just seems to kind of end, there isn't much of a build up to this ending and after its done its just a bit unsatisfying. To circle back above I wouldn't say this is a gameplay issue and actually will go off of my second point which is.

The story is bad and a discombobulated mess. A big sign of this is the game having a lot of its story tied up in little books and notes hidden around the game, rather than with the NPCs or even some story elements. What little bits you do get from the NPCs you speak to is often very vague or a character saying "I don't know". In the end if you're like me and didn't go hunting through every corner of the game for the books or note you're left utterly confused on why you're even suppose to care about the world around you.

Stepping away from the story, as I could hit the character limit on the gripes of that alone, I'll instead focus on one small boss design decision that turns otherwise interesting and unique bosses into slogs, and that is the adds. To quickly add I want to say a lot of bosses in this game are fun (excluding the final for its own bullet point), and all have unique mechanics to make them different. The problem is some of the bosses would just be way too easy so the devs decided to add basic mobs to every fight in am event to up the difficulty. The problem is since they decided to do this to every boss in the game some bosses which are already technically challenging by themselves and just end up devolving into fights based on luck as opposed to skill and just shows a bad or lazy design to make the game more difficult.

On this same topic but deserving of its own bullet point of bad bosses that comes to the final boss known as the Dreamer/Nightmare (spoilers ahead). At the end ofthe game you learn the root are control by a child that Ford had been working with and presumably infused with the root, this entire fight taking place in the characters mind, which is just a bland empty black and red room. The first phase of the fight is nothing special, dodging some easy attacks while you clean up adds and shoot a child in the face. The second half is by far the worst designed fight in the game, as the boss's health reaches zero he goes into phase 2 where he enters a moth like cage and proceeds to become undamagable. From this point the boss targets one player and fires the same attack over and over (an attack you can literally lazily walk left or right to dodge). After a few moments the boss picks a random player (or the main character if youre solo) and you get put in a realm of adds. After you kill those and go through a portal you're teleported back to the bland arena where you get a damage buff based on how many adds you killed in the other dark bland room, and at this point you can damage the bullet sponge of a boss, if youre lucky he'll fall out of his cage and youre able to deal more damage and hopefully after 10 minutes kill him. All and all this fight is just awful, it's both boring and easy (regardless of difficulty) and completely just ruins the otherwise faster paced rate of this game. With that all said I'll get to why I think this game falls so flat later on.

The game feels rushed/lazily designed. Now based om what I've seen of the devs involvement in the community I am more inclined to believe the former, but with fights like the final boss it genuinely makes me wonder. I do think while this game started out as a great idea with much more too it that hasty publishing caused a lot of the execution to be botched. This is most evident in not just the final boss but the last half of the game (only 1 NPC talks about the death of the final boss in 2 lines and the rest just say their same old stuff).

Since the character limit is coming up Ill cut off here. The game is fun, but don't expect replayability.

An ok game completely destroyed by impossible bosses that you need to do over and over again. Completely taking all the fun of a shooter out of the game. I only played solo as MP or CO-OP don't interest me and it seems to be designed for COOP but not having an easier play-through for solo gamers is beyond me especially when you have an Offline option!

Worst thing about this game is checkpoint system, which is very inferior to one of souls games because I can't teleport to every checkpoint, only to few so I have to run trough same parts again even tho I didn't have fun there first time because this game is progressing too slow.

Remnant's "random" generation sounds like something new and fresh at first, but it fails. The dungeons are boring and repetitive. There are several documented glitches, such as falling through the map, the rolling animation messing up to where only the bottom half of the player character's body moves, and many more. The online co-op lags and the hitboxes are finicky (even offline.) The VIP weekend messed up on the PS4 and the game, along with the preorder bonuses and the option itself. Expand

Seriously, this game is some trash once you get past the first promising part. Don't even bother picking it up to be disappointed by it is my recommendation. The trendy gitgud types are lying to you because there's nothing else out right now to occupy their attention. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

PS: it's not "souls like". Remnant is nothing like "souls like". The closest thing to "souls like" about this game is that there are concrete checkpoints you activate ala bonfires. They're lying to you. Ask why.

If Remnant were a novel, it would have a mildly interesting first sentence which is then copied and pasted for 200 pages.

This isn’t a bad game for younger players who may not have seen these stories and rpgs before, but for anyone over 30 this, in my opinion, isn’t really something you’d want to put many hours into. The narrative doesn’t offer much novelty.

    - Bosses, Npc’s and some encounters are generated for each campaign, that means that when you join your friends you might get different stuff each time.

    - The lore is pretty ok, feels like a mix between Lovecrafts mythos and Stephen Kings Dark Tower.
    - Voice Acting is pretty alright.

    The Bad:
    - Some glitches make the game tougher than it should be sometimes, like the revive mechanic.
    - No voice comms on PC (theres voice comms in ps4 for some reason)
    - Sometimes the game froze on me for no reason (this might be my computer)

There, i made an account just to comment on this game. I love it, hopefully you might enjoy it as well.

And yeah its basically a looter shooter with some soulslike mechanicas in it, you might say theres a bit of roguelite aspects in it too.

Also, you dont lose anything by dying, so its not as punishing as souls games.

You would think, "let me use a health refill...". Nope, takes about 5 mins to use, in that time another swarm of ballsacks will be on your chin or a swing from the boss will have you stunned again. The gameplay makes you feel hopeless by cheap swarms of ballsacks on top of the boss already being a challenge. I feel like I have no option but to do it over and over until I get lucky aka RNG is in my favor leaving skill out of the equation. The boss itself is easy enough to learn and kill, but RNG shouldn't be here. Keep the ballsacks out of the fight. It's very much a copy and paste Souls like but in a cheap way. A very bad bad frustrating lazy design of a Dark Souls like game.

I'm here to write this after receiving the game FOR FREE. This is how bad the game is...

The graphics and performance leave quite a lot to be desired, especially the performance, but this is somewhat understandable given the budget and relatively inexperienced dev team. On the positive side, the fact that this team with its budget managed to create such a coherent 3RD person co-op shooter is quite impressive.

Procedural generation is more or less a none factor for me, neither here nor there. I just don't care about it. Most of the time i prefer hand crafted maps and enemy spawns because it usually leads to a more balanced and coherent experience. This game, with its partial procedural generation, somehow manages to avoid (for the most part anyway) these annoyances. Not entirely though. Balancing and difficulty spikes are definitely prevalent in the game and you WILL experience them in your play through.

These problems are alleviated and much more lenient when playing with a friend. In fact, like i said above, the whole game just gets exponentially better when played with a buddy and i wholly recommend that you play the game like this, otherwise, you will likely find yourself saying "meh" a whole lot.

Conclusion: Grab a friend, a few beers, crank up the difficulty, and let the good times flow.

(Taking you with your pants down as they can sometimes kill you in one attack, take half your total ammo to kill while you are busy with 4 or 6 annoying buggers and an exploding blob)

Speaking of "big" monsters some are just impossible to kill if you play solo and you don't have an obstacle to give you a chance to hit their back. (I'm looking at you shielded dual-sword rabbit)

The inexcusable problem is that bosses are absolutely lame, it's where the "Souls" comparison stops. In Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro bosses are hard but interesting and fun. They have a personality. (I've finished them all)
In this game bosses are just based on swarming you with infinite respawning waves of critters while the "real boss" kills you as soon as you are finally "stuck".
    It's not a challenge, it's just ridiculous.
My first boss was an archer that shot arrows that would kill me with one hit or a rain of arrow from some above dimensional portal that would follow me.
Said boss would of course teleport on me, killing me,
or at some point the swarm would spawn in front of me while I was dodging an attack, killing me,
or i would simply end up blocked for half a second, doing melee with my guns needing a reload and be killed by any of the attack of the boss.
And of course the "dodge" doesn't work : given the long duration of the attack I ended up being killed at the end of the roll animation.
Thinking about it, the layout of the boss room may also have been randomly generated and part of the problem (it's literally a kill-room against a ranged, teleporting, buffed critter)
I've farmed, buffed, and equipped (it's not my first rodeo). After trying many times never managing to get the guy below 50% I gave up : I was not fighting a Souls boss, I was swatting at a bunch of deadly mosquitoes. Without the artificial difficulty of the swarm, the "boss" would have been toasted at the first or second try.
Of course given the of random generation, your mileage may vary : other players had different bosses.

One fact is clear : this uninspired game is about luck and group.
    You have been warned.

While you pick a base class you can mold your character to play like, have the same armor, and weapons as the other classes. So you don't have to feel like you need to start over if the weapons don't fit your play style right away. Now I will get into the positives and negatives of the game and try to make it short and simple.

Note I will be leaving positives and negatives with the viewpoint of only having played in a three man group.

    Positives:

    +COOP Gameplay
*I would strongly recommend playing this game with friends and other people to play with. Makes the game funner and a bit more faster paced with more people.

    +Environments
*The environments and settings in this game are second to none and I find nothing but intrigue to the worlds they currently have built and the worlds they will have in the future.

    +Boss Fights
*The boss fights in this game take me back to my old World of Warcraft days of initially wiping and getting a little further each time figuring out the boss fights. Some bosses you will naturally one shot others you may wipe for 30-45 mins before you get that one good run.

    +Passive Traits
*While there isn't leveling you do earn passives trait points by getting xp from killing bosses, completing quests, and killing monsters. All characters start out with the same basic traits. Others are unlocked by doing certain things in game or killing bosses and you can place your points wherever you please.

    +Dynamic Randomly Generated Worlds/Bosses
-You have the ability once you have played through to re-roll your campaign and play on a harder difficulty and in doing this you may or may not get different bosses on your play through to earn different drops. While the environment much looks the same the map layouts can completely change as well.

    Negatives:

    -Dodging Mechanics
*The controls did take some time for me to get used to at first on PC. While not bad I would say that the dodging system can be frustrating sometimes. It does work both ways as well. There have been times where I have dodge boss attacks 3 or 4 times in row and dodged at what appears to be the exact same timing but gotten hit. While I do attribute this to user error on my part sometimes I do feel it can look and be inconsistent. Then there are times where I have dodge right into a boss attack but don't get hit due to the dodge having an invulnerability window. Think of that which you will and make your own judgement.

    -Characters In The Story
*Many of the characters(NPCs) you meet in the game have no story arc whatsoever and have no use.

    -No Clear Roadmap From Developers
*I have looked online as to what the future of this game holds because there is limitless potential to what they may/can do. 6 player raids, PvP, more Story DLC are all things I would like to see in this game. Unfortunately on their forums and reddit there seems to be no roadmap to let players know what's in store for the future.

This game is a great mix of Bloodborne, Darksiders, Borderlands. Great art desing, scenarios, enemies and music, great gunplay and character progression. The story could be better but it is not bad, just Ok to invite you to progress.

Gunfire Games did a great job with this game. It's hard, interesting and fun game. Combat is wonderful for a third person shooter. It greatly combines things from some other games. If you would like a 'Gears of Souls:Diablo Edition' game, get it now. It worth its price.

It's a mix of Dark Souls + Darksiders with guns, as well as Division 2 and Diablo 3.
Awesome gameplay and maps. Only expect it to bring you a tough challenge. It's more difficult than Dark Souls imo, except you coop. I find the coop Scaling interesting as well. Awesome. Buy it!

There are also many hidden gems such as how you get skills (traits) and how you can deal with bosses in multiple ways which in turn give different rewards. I like how you can change your playstyle during the game for different types of situations and are not stuck with the playstyle of the class you started with.
I give it a 10 because it's a surprisingly good game that doesn't deserve the "low" overall Metacritic score.

Melee is kind of clunky but useful in certain situations. You will be more focused on shooting and dodging in most cases but you can time stun locks and get out of deadly situations if you use it correctly.

The game isn't the most graphically intensive but the environments look decent and vary from the different worlds you'll end up visiting. Earth is probably the most dull looking but this is the apocalypse after all. The game def shows its lack of budget so a lot of the areas are copy and paste but it works and you'll be more focused on combat and finding items along the way, so unless you're the type of person that feels it necessary to screenshot everything, you shouldn't be too disappointed.

Gameplay is pretty standard. Normal third person controls minus the chest high wall GOW cover system (you can still get behind cover while crouched and aim to shoot over it). Melee exists but you will only use it in certain situations. There are various weapons from pistols to sniper rifles. Some are really fun to use and others are very meh but they all have a use depending on what you're able to find in your runs. Bosses are hit and miss. Some are well designed and others make you wonder if they were just tacked on to pad game time. One of the biggest complaints right now among the community are the adds that spawn in boss fights. That one is very subjective, however. Some people don't mind it and others hate it. My opinion is that since we have guns, if you didn't have adds attacking you then you would just hunker down in one spot and shoot the boss to oblivion.

Replay value is definitely a thing for this game. You will not find every single item in one run. You won't fight every boss in one run. There are a lot of secrets to find and solve but you can only do so if you do multiple runs or co-op a lot. It keeps everything fresh and you always have something new to find for at least 2-3 runs. There are 3 difficulties as of writing and they each bring their own challenges to your play style.

Overall, the game is fun. At its price tag, I'd call it a steal for the hours you'll have by yourself or with friends. The game has its faults and I think it's mainly due to budget. The devs worked with what they had and they have promised to support the game regardless of review scores or sales. I believe we'll have more content in the future and for now, I'm thankful we don't have a micro transaction riddled mess that only wants you to pony up for season passes, expansion passes, cosmetics and convenience crap. The game isn't for everyone but there is a huge community at the moment and you won't struggle to find people to play with.

The loot progression system is very satisfying and rewarding when you beat a new boss and craft new weapons yet also grinding for these weapons doesn't feel like a chore due to the way the story is set out to keep the player interested. One of my favourite features of the game is the way in which the co-op story is set out. Each player has a procedurally generated campaign so when restarting the game with friends it feels familiar yet fresh due to chances of fighting new bosses you had yet to discover. What separates this game from other souls like games such as Sekiro and Dark Souls is the fact that really is no punishment for dying other than having to restart from the generously placed checkpoints. However does not make the game easy but instead encourages a more aggressive play style resulting in a fresh game-style that feel more enjoyable than having to navigate the game cautiously. The art style of the monsters are very creatively designed and the game itself feels very well optimised. The only real cons I've discovered whilst playing through this game are occasional glitches whilst fighting enemies and picking up items as well as the facial design being quite desynced during some cutscenes however the smooth mechanics and satisfying controls makes up for some occasional graphics glitches. Overall I highly recommend this game for people looking to have some fun with friends and grind together. Expand

I would wait until that patch hits before starting.

I finished the game on normal in about 13 hours and overall I enjoyed it, apart from the two bosses I mentioned above I felt the difficulty was spot on for normal, a decent challenge without being overly frustrating (I'm sure hard offers that for those who enjoy it). That being said I didn't really enjoy the boss fights that much, I'm definitely in the add hater camp, I would have preferred more Souls-like bosses, where it's you vs the boss, without annoying adds staggering you. You could put ammo in creates, urns etc in the boss room, or just on the floor ala Resident Evil.

I really enjoyed the trait variety, this actually felt a step up from Souls, they offered a great number of traits so build diversity was solid. I was also satisfied with the array of ranged weapons, although melee definitely felt like an afterthought. I would have liked to have seen more armour sets though, the fashion aspect was definitely lacking.

Technically the game ran well for the most part, I played it on GTX 1080 & 8600k @ 4.4GHz and I was sitting at 80-144fps most of the time on medium at 1080p, I will say the Swamp area was a problem though, lots of drops and an overall choppiness, it really stood out. The audio was good, I found the voice acting fantastic (lip syncing seemed off, though). Visually the game was interesting, I really liked the art style and the mob design was great.

Overall I'd give the game a solid 8/10 once the boss fights are fixed.

The story and lore in the game is well written with decent voice acting and a lot buried in files and diaries. Like From Software, you can choose to engage in the story and go deep or you can just float over the surface and get the general gist. The art sets a bleak tone which suits its post apocalyptic setting and the character models are decent with some character customization. Since it is third person over-the shoulder, the character customization is not all that meaningful.

The strongest part of Remnant is the game play in coop. It has the best of Gears (of War) and Dark Souls with tough situations. Some of the boss fights, in my opinion, need tuning, particularly for solo play. Playing solo requires one to be mostly perfect on normal, near perfect on hard and unerringly perfect on nightmare (on first play through) and the bar lowers significantly when playing in coop. It is obvious that the game is better tuned for two and three player groups than it is for solo play.

The random generation encourages additional playthroughs, especially since playing through once you will not have all the story elements or see all of the enemies, layouts, loot and bosses. Each players world is unique due to the variability of the game through a large amount of content and the use of random generation. It also encourages group play so one can see different zones and bosses and different layouts. The game also encourages and rewards exploration with hidden, meaningful secrets and loot.

For a $40 game with additional free content to be added in the future it is one of the best priced games available and well worth the price. Hopefully the gunplay used in Remnant will find its way into the upcoming Darksiders 4 with Strife's focus on guns - in my opinion it would be a perfect fit.

The team is selected automatically taking into account the level of its strongest member, which allows you to create a rational group, where each of its representatives will be able to enjoy the game. Negative reviews note the complexity of Remnant: From the Ashes and the uniformity of tactics, also the unsightly graphics, but one common parameter, why the game is bad, they do not. This game is meant to be a marriage of the soulslike and looter shooter genres, my two favorite types of games. However, the game is not what I expected at all. The controls are clunky, I find myself getting stuck in lengthy melee animations when I’m trying to shoot, the consumables and health items take just a half second too long to ever be viable, and the roll/mantle/sprint is just obtuse. The game randomly generates a campaign for you which is really really cool, but results in some downright broken boss fights. The matchmaking hardly works unless you choose to play with a friend. I was relying on public matchmaking, but no one has ever joined my session, nor is there a way to summon a partner like there is in Dark Souls, Nioh, etc. You truly just have to get lucky. I wanted to like this game so bad but it’s the least fun video game I’ve played in recent memory. Unbelievably disappointing. Expand

    Gonna make this brief:

You travel between dimensions, time and space to try and find a way to undo the apocalypse that is dooming earth.

also, the Artistic Inspiration is Lovecraftian and the Gameplay Inspiration is Dark Souls.

The game starts really boring. In the first hour or so the game is completly linear and throws the same enemys at you, over and over again. However ... after about 2 hours the game starts to get way more open and you will find yourself on Darksiders like maps. Linear but not completly narrow.
There are a lot of different enemys and you can protect yourself angainst them with help of the most detailed stat system I have seen in quiet some time. Everything you upgrade or modify, changes the stats of your equipment.

The story so far looks really interesting and way less complicated than the Dark Souls storyline. I wont spoiler anything here tho. The characters and bosses are not boring npcs and u can tell that some time and work had been put into them.

In terms of actual gunplay the game feels good and you can choose between various weapon types. The game rewards you for exploring and you can try out different builds.

What I dont like or what i dont understand is, why exactly does the main character have a voice if he never talks except for some grunts here and there. You can select different dialog options but there is no voice what so ever.
From a technical standpoint it seems like the game has some issues in some areas because Im running a 1080 Ti on 1080p and the game drops to 70-80 frames because of low gpu usage. That is rarely the case but i feel like i have to mention that. Most of the time it runs smooth as butter. In terms of graphics, the game is not on a next level or anything but the graphics are nice and appropriate for what it is. I couldnt test the coop tho.

So in conclusion: I think this game is a better game for 40 bucks than the last 10 games i played at 60. I dont think they had a huge budget and what they did with that is pretty awesome. If you are looking for a Dark Souls like game with shooter elements ... this is it and i can recommend it. It is a solid shooter with RPG elements and I cant wait to finish it.

EDIT: So i finished the game and i just need to take the rating from 8 to 7 or even lower. All the story and characters they build up are completly irrelevant due to the short ending. You think there is so much more coming but no ... theres your endboss and there are your credits. The NPC dont say anything and basically nothing happens after the enboss. What a shame

It rewards the player for taking the time to learn its core. The story and lore are magnificent if you take the time to explore + the art style and atmosphere are very immersive + the soundtrack is on par and the gameplay... oh, THE gameplay is just pure perfection. But then they a separate team for boss design and they hated life and wanted everyone else to also so they put in the worst insta-kill hard hitting attacks with no real warning they could think of, then kept putting the horribly designed bosses as often as possible. Enjoying the game? too bad! get your teeth kicked in for 2+ hours because we can't do our job well, hur dur.
I pray every night that every single person involved with the design, implementation, and approval of any boss in this game gets testicular or ovarian cancer that makes them swell up extremely painfully over months before finally rupturing and then causing the other to do the same but take three times as long to go so. It's really THAT bad of a game.

To begin with, the game is extremely easy, the game was compared to Dark Souls but i often died 3 times maximum on bosses and mobs never posed a threat in hard difficulty. This is just one factor, a game should not be judged only by its difficult by any means, but my god, does the boss design in this game sucks, the "harder ones" create that false sensation because they are either bullet sponges or spawns millions of minions. Other than difficulty, story sucks; and when it comes to atmosphere i like the lovecraftian style but it is often so overwhelming with a lot of aspects, from medieval fantasy to science fiction, this by itself became kindda cringy halfway through the game because it seemed like the writers tried to shove as much elements as possible in a single game. The game is buggy as hell, havent had a game breaking one that kept me from playing; but often i died when changing plataforms, teleporting, and doing other common stuff. The game doesnt stimulates the player to explore, because often when you do explore, you find bad loot and bad enemies overall. I have to say the concept of a "soulslike shooter" seemed aewsome at first, the execution of the game is terrible though, i played from beginning to end expecting something halfway or in the end, but the gameplay is repetitive, i would call it a sin to call this game an dark souls something because it fails in good exploration, progression, world building, boss design and fun factor overall, this coming from a guy that is not a big fan o Dark Souls but acknowledges the game's influency and development. Postapocalyptic shooter. We posess tech to open portals to other worlds. Scavenge, carve a foothold, rebuild.

    Nice premise, right?

As Robert Rath once wrote, "You have to earn your apocalypse".

    Quote:

"The key to a good apocalypse lies in what happens before things fall apart. There's narrative groundwork to be done. Building up before you break down. Developers need to give the audience a sense of the world and its characters. A good End Times game lets us know what's at stake. It shows us why this world deserves to be broken, and why it deserves to be fixed.

Apocalypse stories exist in a paradox - they show us a world that deserves to be destroyed, but deserves equally to be saved. They're wish fulfillment. "

Now Remnant. You are some guy/girl/notimportant, they are bland cutouts anyway, who gets on a boat and sails somewhere to prevent something from something, because something bad is going to happen.

OK. Apocalypse happened. There is no explanation WHAT exactly happened. Who are you; why you survived and others didn't; where this is happening... nothing is ever completely explained.
Let me spoil it for you. Apocalypse happened because some guy talked to some entity which we never see and used his position to allow this entity and its friends to come to Earth. Billions of people on the planet never had any say in this. One guys screwed up, boom, everybody dead.

What do we fight for? There is no humanity left to speak of, none that we can see, apart from less than 20 guys and girls in a bunker somewhere. We're screwed anyway? Never explained.
Who are those people? There is at least some backstory about two to three main NPCs... which tells most of what we will know about the world, and yet manages to leave those characters completely forgettable. They don't actually do anything anyway, not even provide some exposition for world's sake...

Did the world deserve to be broken and remade, like in, say, Fallout? Nope, it was not even Russkies invading or China launching nukes because the world was rife with unsolvable differences. Americans screwed up, OK, thanks, that's new, but it's not even Americans, it was, like I said, one guy. The world was doing FINE. OK, Cold War was going on somewhere in the backdrop (it's briefly mentioned in a DLC), and that's it.

Does it deserve to be fixed? Don't know, it's a soulless procedurally generated world of gray, gray and more brown, everything is broken and there is no one left.
The monster areas can be compared to, say, Hellgate London (hell monsters invade, but humanity has a plan), but you can see some semblance of life in quest hubs. Here there is none, everybody is some form of broken, and most people in the single hub where everybody does not shoot you on sight don't even speak.
Heck, you can choose you character's voice, but he's on mute most of the time. Except when he (or she, really no difference) is afraid, so no roleplaying a grim and gruff survivor.

Other worlds are somewhat explained in scattered notes, and whatever, everyone there is out to kill you anyway. When you come across someone who does not, they seem out of place. Like, what the heck, person, I just committed mass murder just to get to you (they attacked first!) and you speak as if you never had any murderous intentions. Are you even from around here?

There are no stakes in the game. Nothing you do affects the outcome, which is... credits. You never actually make any noticeable impact on any world - NPCs don't react differently, scenery does not change, nothing. Apparently, developers forgot to buy cutscenes andor cinematics.
Kill a guardian and ensure the world's doom? No changes anywhere. Support a brainwashing cult? Nothing. Kill a towering behemoth that was godzilling down cities? Ok, THAT gets you at leas some form of reaction. That's it, this is the single time in the whole game (+2 DLCs) when you feel you are making an impact.

The game is ridiculously darksoul-ish. Forget being Sir Lancelot of Albion, step into the comfortable shoes of Sir Die-a-lot out of nowhere.

The game is engaging enough to keep your monotonous grind through lifeless levels with no character in search of at least a sliver of a story.

DO NOT REPEAT MY MISTAKE. There is none. What little is there can be read in a wiki.
Spend your time on other games, games with stories and emotion and stakes and characters and fun.
    You won't find it here.

I think the challenge level was alright. Graphics were good but sometimes just boring (wow walking tree enemies called "The Root"). Sound effects were great, I liked hearing monster growls showing they were near.

Control scheme I hated. The first problem was many controls could "lock", meaning pressing them no longer does anything, many times I would press the fire button and nothing happened, and I would even be rapidly pressing it for a second and still nada. No not stunned or out of ammo. Lets say that problem didn't exist, well the controls still sucked. All the weapons I used you need to click once to fire once, so you rapid press fire. And you have to press and hold aim to fire, otherwise its a melee attack. Did I have a use for melee attacks past the early part of the game? No, many bosses and such can't even be hit with it. Point is you should just be able to fire without holding aim and you should be able to hold to fire not rapid click, which caused a weird uneven rate of fire. And there are many weapons I didn't feel like I had much choice, long range accurate ones were best always.

I felt builds and stats were badly set up, upgrades system wasn't good, special abilities (attached to your guns) were unimpressive, the gameplay loop was mostly about shooting accurately and healing, they should have made special abilities have a broader scope and have their own keys.

It was a fun enough game to play through and finish. People have said the bosses just spawn adds and you just have to slog through and hope you kill things fast enough to widdle down the boss. While this is true some bosses were interesting enough, they feel very hard until you beat them. The boss that would summon goblin-ish riders was cute, though I found a cheese for it. You could strategize and learn boss patterns, but things are pretty random sometimes.

The story was super unclear to me and really needed more work. I guess I have to keep in mind it's just a video game premise that sets up excuses to visit different worlds, fight many things, and have some final boss to end it all (and go to DLC land). Sometimes there was an interesting character or something that had it's own voice acting and personality and such, but you would see them for a minute and then never again, I feel the priorities weren't in order. It also felt like you went from world to world killing whatever was there with little explanation, and you'd be like who were those people I killed what was their backstory, oh never mind here's a bunch of totally different stuff.

So, 4/10 I feel like that's a weird rating for something I felt was generally fun but I believe I have explained the reasons in this review. Ciao gamers.

If you want a shooter easier souls like game with rpg elements and interesting combinations this is the game for you. People complaining it is too hard, really, git gud, too much mobs on boss fights? This is because you don't understand the rpg elements part, a lot of equips adds bonus after kills, your skills also charge with kills, obviously, after you kill the boss these skills would be kind of useless don't you think? But they would really help during the boss fights? What do you think? So this is the reason for the mobs.
Well, it certainly is not easy to solo on nightmare mode, yes this is for co-op, it is ridiculously hard to solo bosses on nightmare but when I say it is easier than souls is because on normal mode with the right leveled equips and mods it is really a walk on a Sunday afternoon, really. But I think it is fun to help under-geared people :/
Now, why I gave only 8 if I like the game?
Online bugs, sometimes you die while entering a teleport, you can't choose sessions correctly like sometimes you can enter low gear people, that is fun to help, and sometimes you can't, you can't see ping so it is a lottery if you can play the game with others nicely or if you will go powerpoint mode, but when it works and sometimes it takes a while to find a good session, it is a fun experience.

I'm not a fan of shooters or procedural generation so I put this one off for a long while. While the game was really fun to play, and put forth a nice challenge, it's hampered by a few weak points. Thankfully multiplayer wasn't one of them as I enjoyed it solo. There were two big problems for me. Gear and weapons are extremely limited. There were two big problems for me. Gear and weapons are extremely limited. I ended up playing through with the default weapons and armor because what (rarely) came along was pretty boring IMO. The bigger problem is the procedural generation. It does nothing but severely limit good level design. There wasn't a single time here where I was wowed by what I was exploring. Quite the opposite, I frequently found myself realizing I've already seen these exact dungeon sections. But what about replayability? Lack of procedurally generated levels certainly hasn't diminished Dark Souls' replayability.

So i was thinking of this game as 6/10 and not felt like explaining why in a review, and this is a rant about why i give it 5/10 now. I've been playing offline so far though i can see some of the game decisions are tailored toward online and negatively affect offline and haven't lowered the score because of that unless it really could be done better. Few words about the game pre-rant: It's decent, completely unoriginal, it knows what it is, the story and character/npc progressions is almost non-existent beyond first hour but whatever budget was allocated for it was well spent and if you want to go and read some lore in an early, a little bit too easily missable (probably under you're forced to go there again somewhere at the end of the game ?) location that despite it being in written form it's really well delivered (and not all in one text). The game then embarks on a FPP dungeon grinder switching between open world and dungeons but really open world is an almost linear dungeon too. The game has apparently semi random-generated maps and what it means is that on each world you'll see the first 1/4 of the map and then see it rehashed another 3 times in a slightly randomized order of the segments as you experience the endless deja vu. Also every mandatory dungeon has a paired optional dungeon which despite having the map blocks slightly randomized feels like the exact same dungeon. Fortunalety as you realize there are more worlds the game stops feeling less like a lackluster alpha version and while the feeling of each world being a very pretty reskin of the last one there's enough added twists to the enemies and variety to the world map that if i were to name them all it would come apparent that there is enough change to make the game interesting and enjoyable, encouraging you to try different weapons that you unlock with every dungeon. Initially the weapon and armor choice is nonexistent and it feels really constraining, by the time you enter second world you have an small choice of weapons that you try to use and realize they are all "sidegrades" and quite pointless to use considering the steep price of upgrading them to +x so they are as good as your starter weapon, the added variety as the games progresses makes them a sidegrade system made quite well except... it kinda kills most of the feeling of achieving something and unlocking something cool. Overall a decent game to kill some time every other day and not much more, perhaps with some potential for co-op play. (and by that point i've accidentaly wrote almost a full, albeit a bit abridged, review).
    Rant Ahead:
So i got to the butcher boss, at that point gameplay became less linear and more interesting with more ways to do something than one, tried shooting the guy from afar as he was red on reticle which started the "boss gate mist to enter arena" -> ok alt+f4 -> restarted, it's all reset i'm starting from the last saved checkpoint, great. So i snuck in, "maybe there can be a conversation option like with houndmaster?" nope.. so i found the bottom level of arena, nothing there to interact with just some pots to break for scraps, went back up "oh so it's like houndmaster where i can skip the boss by sneaking past, not the first or second boss you can just skip for whatever reason" so i tried sneaking past just to confirm my theory and then go and try to confront the boss. Well you can't skip it you have to fight. The bottom floor got locked out "Well maybe we drop there with boss half fight or maybe there's going to be something there afterwards but it feels like i've missed something". Killed the boss, went back down, started destroying urns for gems... sorry, for scrap, and then found out you can actually enter a few of them and hide in them. Problem is a) you can accidentaly (by attacking or just rolling) destroy them, there is no shiny aura like on most interactable things and there is a veeery faint "you can interact with it circle" that doesn't pop the interaction prompt unless you're standing from a certain side, certain distance and looking at a certain angle... "ok, so i havent save at a check point, and the game doesn't save without checkpoint or normal quit just like when i lost 2h of grinding pots and urns for scrap because of game's frequent crashes, right?" -> alt+f4 -> well, the game saved the progress.
Great so what did i lose? Go figure you have to kill the boss one way or another you can just get a potentially better weapon. I've been looking to replace my starter hammer for 17h of gameplay, found skull flail at world two and found it a downgrade with a slight potential for online. Go figure the better weapon you get for hidding in the urn before the boss is a skull flail reskin with twice better stats.
And now i have to replay the 17h of the game again with starter weapon (you can reset world without losing stuff but if you never got anything better.. ) or i can try handgesturing online randoms to be stealthy

Pretty good graphism. The gameplay is quite sweet. Easy to handle and you get quick fun with your friends

The story seems simple but solid

The levels are badly designed and uninspired, they don’t spark curiosity or desire to explore them – but you still have to, because new weapons and armor aren’t dropped by the enemies, they must be found in obscure spots scattered across the maps. [Issue#241, p.44]

The combat is solid glue holding together a solid product, offering some fun cooperative shooting and a good amount of interesting items and weapons to build. Gunfire Games has already supported the game with two new modes and hopefully post-launch support will continue. While those who need a constant influx of new loot to parse through may find this game a bit on the slow side, those who are more familiar with games like Dark Souls may feel more at home here. The experience isn’t a perfect one, but there’s plenty to love in Remnant and excitement to be had in its future.

By taking the best bits of a few different genres, Gunfire Games has come up with an exceptional formula here, and brought us the surprise hit of the year. Sure, it’ll take you a while to “git gud”, but it actually feels like it’s worth the practice.
