Reigns: The Witcher

A light, playful spin-off on The Witcher universe that works best in short sessions. Its catchy concept is undermined by repetition and a strange decision-making system. An ideal bite-sized mobile experience. Nothing more, nothing less.

Reigns: The Witcher sticks to the formula established by the original Reigns without reinventing it. Its blend with CD Projekt Red’s fantasy RPG offers fans of the Witcher an enjoyable diversion alongside their favorite character, while also serving as a potential entry point for newcomers to the series. Overall, it’s not particularly captivating, but it gets the job done.

Reigns: The Witcher is another solid entry in the series that fans of the signature gameplay of Reigns and The Witcher lore will enjoy. The dark humor and dedication to the lore are a step above the rest, while the addition of “quests” to guide how you interact with the story is wonderful. However, it still feels a little stale.

Reigns: The Witcher brings the series' signature gameplay into Geralt's universe with a simple system that proves highly entertaining, though it can also fall into repetition rather quickly.

Reigns The Witcher finds itself at a crossroads. On the one hand, it's a rather skillful adaptation of Nerial's license formula to the famous universe of Andrzej Sapkowski's books and, above all, CD Projekt RED's The Wild Hunt, which will certainly make fans smile. On the other hand, the experience unfortunately suffers from a rather frustrating contradiction between its punishing rogue-lite elements and its inspiration system, which often puts us in inextricable situations. Nevertheless, the title offers a generally enjoyable and generous experience for its price, provided you listen to Jaskier's ramblings in small doses.

Those who are familiar with the Reigns series, or who are big fans of The Witcher, will no doubt enjoy the game and the wealth of different options and choices it offers. But there are some stumbling blocks here that could put more casual players off the game after a few runs gone wrong.

You probably know already if you fit within the Venn diagram of Reigns fans who also love the world of The Witcher. Outside of the hit-or-miss combat, Nerial hasn’t exactly revolutionised its patented Reigns formula with Reigns: The Witcher, but it also doesn’t really need to. The trademark swipey narrative puzzle gameplay suits The Witcher very well, with its focus on moral choices and dark sense of humour. I had a good amount of fun with Reigns: The Witcher. If you’re a fan of The Witcher or enjoyed the previous Reigns games and want to see a twist on the formula, so might you.

A casual timewaster for people who are into the Witcher enough to get the references, but not married to the idea every Witcher game has to be a big RPG.

Reigns: The Witcher is a perfect marriage of IP and indie mechanics. By evolving the objective system into the deeper Inspirations mechanic, Nerial has ensured that every "Game Over" feels like a step forward rather than a step back.

Reigns: The Witcher prioritizes serving the hungry CDPR fanbase, who are desperate for anything related to Geralt's saga, over providing something truly fresh for its own community. But that isn't inherently bad.
