The complete and total LACK OF SUPPORT by the company that made this game, leads me to score this VERY low. Im so dissatisfied with it, I have deleted its local content from my PC, and unfortunately, the EULA stats that you will not get your money back on anything bought through steam.... (maybe they should look at each state as its consumer law is different and I could potentiall go through small claims and probably be sucessfull, but why bother). BE WARNED if are thinking about buying this game, if you have zonealram or buy it through steam, you have a lot of work to do to get this game to work. If you have any questions, dont hold your breath for any help on their forums. This could have been a good game, but lets face it, this was made as a MOD and was produced by people who won the "build something unreal" contest...... so its not like it was built by people who are in the industry, just a collection of people whose skill at programming, graphics, etc is just not up to par. First somehow shocking, the game made me feel something I have not experienced since I played 'Thief' and WWII Online. I was scared and run for my life like the boy from the 'Red badge of courage' did in the first battle. Well, I've managed to survive and turned back, but the Call of Duty and all BFs got wiped off from my HD permanently: R.I.P.

Also the introduction of controllable arty is a welcome addition that adds strategy and depth to this already excellent game. First of all: The game is slow, really slow (I even had to reduce the graphics' detail levels and resolution but no improvement). The graphics did not annoy me, but they surely were not modern-day graphics. The animation was tragic,unrealistic...almost robotic. The sound was OK. These aspects, I could easily cope with. IF!!! If the gameplay produced what every gameplay's target is...FUN. This game is surely not fun... I was sooooo dissappointed. The interface is unreasonably complicated (even if I reallocated the keys,I was still confused) There are literally 1000 commands out there, you have to familiarize with. I agree with the absense of live map, i agree with the amount of damage caused by a shot... but i totally disagree with the absense of crosshair...now, you can call me noob and underskilled, but if there was any fun in fighting with my own self, just to put an enemy in my ironsights, believe me, I would sit down and eat my keyboard to learn how to do it properly...but...there is no joy in it...no fun...the point of a game is this. FUN. If I wanted to live a totally real warfare, I would enlist myself in an army to go to a front in real life. Now,there is another thing.Maybe less importand...some of the maps are huge to walk around...it doesn't help at all. Don't get me wrong...I was eagerly anticipating this game to come out and I pre-ordered it as soon as it came out as an ad and this is the reason I am furstrated...I personally find it promising,as an idea but...unplayable. Great gameplay, best first person animations/models I've ever seen, excellent maps. The graphics are surprisingly well done for such an old engine. It features such subtle things that when you switch games, you realize that every game needs what RO has. The tank combat is amazing as well as the infantry combat. Definately the MOST REALISTIC WW2 game out there. It is very easy to be misled by the people who gave it poor ratings. Some of them claim to want "realistic war simulation," but then complain when the actual view that one would have from a real tank is too small for them (believe it or not, in a real war, you cannot simply switch to 3rd person to get a better picture of the battlefield... sorry to spoil it!). There was one person who complained about the "outdated Unreal engine," and this same person claimed to have been "misled" by the promo video. This is where competency of ones own system comes into play. When developers put together a promotional video that serves as the face of their product, it only makes sense that they are going to make it using a top-of-the-line system, which will in turn display the game and graphcis at their best. (SPOILER ALERT: Everyone does this! If Tripwire wants to promote their game using a video that was made on a brand new, state-of-the-art computer, then that is simply good marketing. I do not have a brand new computer, and I realize that before I buy a game that I am not going to be able to max out the settings. However, I still buy games, and I do not complain because my own out-of-date system can't handle it. Finally, any complaints about bugs are very unwarranted. Yes, there have been a lot of bugs in this game. Yes, there are some lag issues and long load times. HOWEVER, Tripwire already had a support site set up and ready to go by the time the game was released, and they are already addressing issues and working on a patch. In fact, I would say that I much more pleased with Tripwire than almost any other gaming company (besides Valve, of course), mainly because they are acknowledging that their product has flaws, but that they are also devoting a lot of time and energy to eliminating thos flaws. BOTTOM LINE: Tripwire is a brand new company of guys who won a mod contest... cut them some slack. They have very quickly put together an awesome game, quite possibly the most realistic WW2 fps out there, and they are giving it to us for $24.99. Compared to the $50.00 pricetag of most new games, this is a great value. The technical support and attention to flaws is unmatched by any other game developer out there (once again, besides Valve), and I think that I can speak for almost all mature gamers out there when I say that we would much rather have a cheap game that needs some fine tuning (with amazing tech support and developer attention) instead of an over-priced game that we have to wait 3 years to play. If you're an adult and can withstand a few minor setbacks, then this game is going to be a great purchase. If you can't handle realism and expect some mod-makers to deliver a fast, cheap, flawless game their first time, then you're going to be waiting a while. Expand

This game however is a fresh breath of air on a number of levels. The first thing that differs from the majority of other WWII games is the fact that it takes place in war torn Russia. There won't be any storming the beaches of Normandy, or fighting for wake or Midway island, but you will find yourself in a very immersive, authentic combat environments ranging from large bombed out cities complete with interior buildings to the huge fields and rolling hills of the Russian countryside. One thing that separates RO's maps from those of other games is their openness and dynamics. There are boundaries, but they are practical; If you want to take the long way around and use the tall grass for cover, you can. There are a number of ways to get into the building you're attacking. The city maps don't force the players to bottleneck into a single kill zone. Buildings have multiple levels and plenty of places to hide. There is plenty of cover, these maps are set up like a war-zone. Take cover behind a burned out vehicle, or dive into a bomb crater, use sand bag fortifications to set up MG positions. This game gives you the flexibility to play out your class and utilize the environment to your advantage. Vehicles, yes, there are drivable vehicles in RO. for some of you that are still a bit shell shocked from the BF2 vehicular onslaught, your reaction may be to flinch. I understand, your concern, and I assure you, this is different. Vehicles take skill to operate, tanks require a crew to be fully functional, tank turrets operate with directional keys so the more heavily armed vehicles operate more like machines rather than superhuman suits of armor. Also, since you need to spawn as a tank crew member to use the tanks, and those player slots are limited, just as all of the classes. This feature was implemented to ensure a balanced team and also prevents all the BS associated with pointless bickering and fighting over getting to the vehicle spawns first. It was good to see vehicles enhancing gameplay without dominating the map. The weapons in RO are very satisfying. They work on very simple principals: You see no on-screen crosshairs, your gun will move independent of your field of view when you move the mouse, but this doesn't mean your weapon is inaccurate. Your gun hits what it points at, the only thing is, if you're not using the sights you have to judge where your gun is pointing, and since the gun moves freely on the screen, it isn't as simple as using the middle of your screen. Solution; either practice aiming without them, or pull up your iron sights and aim. (Just like real life.) You will be pleased to see your enemies drop dead with one well placed shot, whether you're gunning down waves of Russians with a light machine gun, or sneaking around German fortifications with with your pistol, you won't be disappointed in your weapons ability to drop enemies. Gun models are decent to nice, animations are detailed and very well done, gun sounds are great; this game has very good sound effects to begin with, and the weapon reports are realistic, especially at distance. Factors like bullet travel and bullet drop have been taken into consideration making it necessary to lead and compensate for distance on longer engagements. Supported fire positions play a large roll in infantry combat. your weapons are accurate, but are effected by recoil rather than scripted shot dispersion. To compensate for recoil, you can force the muzzle back down between shots, or during automatic fire, crouch and or prone to stabilize yourself, or one of my favorite features of the game is how you can rest your weapon on objects like walls or sandbags, or even on the sides of trees, any solid object, and a small indicator icon will appear letting you know your weapon is stable. With this feature you can negate most of the recoil and muzzle sway. Machine gun support isn't a matter of running and gunning. weapons like the light machine guns and anti material rifles require that you deploy your bipod either on the ground or on an object to be controllable. The level of realism in this game is rivaled only by simulation games like Operation Flashpoint, yet RO achieves this while maintaining a nice amount of fast paced action. With cool features like getting your weapons shot from your hands, replacing melted barrels on your MG42, attaching/detaching bayonets that add weight to the end of your weapon resulting in slightly more muzzle sway, cooking off grenades or even clubbing and pistol-whipping enemies. Your map and hud displays only the most basic of information. there is no ammunition counter, so just like real shooting you have to keep track of your shots. A damage indicator displays where you are injured; damage to the legs will slow the player down. Damage to the arms will increase muzzle swaying. The game is in no way a slow race like SWAT 4, nor is it a marathon jump, run, dive, shoot, parachute fest like BF2. The player has a stamina system that will allow them to sprint for only so long and jump only so many times before becoming exhausted. The player becomes audibly out of breath at which point the weapons become a bit more difficult to stabilize. You can dive, as well as lean around corners, but from my experience, I can say fairly confidently that these features aren't over used or abused as in some games, I don't even think they can be. Speaking of games, I should point out how RO takes a step away from the normal FPS style. It has most of the elements of real combat without feeling like a computer game. I mean that in the sense that there are no on screen icons floating around players, friendly tags only appear at very close range, and only when your pointing right at them. Just as this game brings realism to the table, it also adds in some of the harsh realities and confusion associated with the fog of war. Friendly fire happens; If you run over the hill where your enemies are, and your team doesn't know it, there's a good chance you'll be shot from either side. Communication is key for your teams success as well as survival. Which I might add, the game features an outstanding voice chat system. And along the lines of harsh realities, there is an appropriate amount of gore. bodies will bleed, shrapnel will tear people up, grenades will blow limbs off, and a direct HEAT round from a tank will reduce the player to a fine mist of blood and bone fragments. There is respawning, but it works in waves of reinforcements. You spawn with everyone else at a set time in a cycle. Instead of a ticket ratio, the teams have a reinforcement percentage, the less ground your team captures and the more your team gets shot up, the lower that percentage will go, and the lower it goes, the lower the frequency of spawns, until the percentage is reduced to zero, and the remaining players are eliminated, resulting in the end of a round. The objectives are similar to the flags in Battlefield 2. however instead of flags, you will have a building, or small village to capture and defend. The team play is very nice in RO. No one person can win the game, and it takes the cooperation of the team to capture and hold objectives. Points are awarded more on an objective basis rather than pure kills. I am aware of a stat system, but I have not investigated it yet. It's running off of the Unreal 2.5 engine, and although it's slightly out of date, RO's developers managed to squeeze every last drop out of the engine. The visuals are in no way bad. they are quite nice, especially considering the engine. On the plus side, this means the game is very flexible and forgiving for those of us who haven't dropped 3 grand into a computer. As far as complaints towards the game, I can think of two off hand. One, map load times are a bit long, and two, falling damage is a bit excessive, other than that, I am more than satisfied with Red Orchestra, especially with its reasonable price of $24.99 on steam. I purchased it online via steam without a hitch, but you can get a retail box version if you manage to find one. I would have to say though, this game is not for everyone. If you prefer more arcade style games like Counter Strike or the get up and go instant action of Battlefield 2, you may not have the patience for Red Orchestra. Some people may not like the game at all. However, if you are a fan of the more tactical military first person shooters, if your tired of leet speakers and little kids turning your games into lame spam contests, and you can learn to respect a game who's developers actually did their homework and produced a realistic game. RO may be just what you're looking for. Expand

GREAT small unit infantry tactics sim. Very smooth gameplay, probably the best FPS for this time period.....BUT you guys HAVE to do something to improve the tank combat. It need much more of the real feel the infantry side has. The transport vehicles work fine, but the tanks need some major work.

Compared to games of its caliber and goals, it falls short due to technical limitations. The idea of realism itself ends up become a shortcoming of the game, especially in the community, as it ends up being an excuse for certain gimmicks and gameplay features (or lack of them). I feel there was significant ambition, but too much for a game won out of a competition from a mod.

Very good game. Any body who played the original will love this version more. It seems a twinge more arcade, then the ut2k3/4 mods. The tanking seems better, and the graphics are great.

I give it a solid 6 because personally I think RED ORCHESTRA developed out of DoD:S because it's wwII, and it came out AFTER DoD:S sooo ya. But I give it credit for trying and the graphics.

I find Red Orchestra to be one of, if not the best WWII first person shooters. It emphasizes teamwork, and chooses a lesser known Russians vs Germans situation.

The best blend of realism, authenticty and simple team based action I have found yet. If you like your WWII games, enjoy multiplayer team based gaming and want something a bit different offering some real chance for immersion and proper battlefield tactics then look no further.

  1. I absolutely love the attention Tripwire has given to the small details in the game.

There's very little gameyness in RO and a whole lot of gritty crawling along the ground so you can flank over to that machine gunner and allow your team to advance to the next spawn point objective.
  3. Red Orchestra is an enjoyable, team-based online shooter for those who like the Battlefield-style games but want a more technical and realistic experience.
