Easily one of the finest WWII games I have ever played. Those who do not enjoy this should go back to playing MOH or COD with all the kiddies out there; this gameoffers a genuine combat experience that is both entertaining and involving. If you're looking for something light-hearted and easy though, then this isn't for you.

RO: Ostfrnot 41-45 is really a TEAM effort game... that is IF you can find a team that doesn't shoot you in the back just for the fun of it. I haven't seen any TEAM effort at all, though on occasion a few people try to make it a statigic game, yet fail miserably due to the idiots who have no clue as to how to work together.

Red Orchestra is amazingly realistic, and a lot of care has been put into its historical accuracy. The infantry combat is challenging and rewarding; the tanks are an absolute blast. Definitely the best WW2 game I have ever played.

The most immersing WW2 (or any war for that matter) game yet, it feels like you are really there! Sounds, the visuals - everything top notch. Very hard learning curve, but that's a + in my book! Everything shouldn't be easy.

This is an excellent game. Only the immature and bad players of other games will dislike this. If you can play a game without crosshairs, then you will love this. If not, go back to Counter-Strike where you belong.

Wow, what a disappointment. I was so wrong thinking this was another Brothers in Arms. Single player mode, e.g. "Training" is awful: AI is dumber than my hamster, no realism whatsoever. Damage mode is very realistic, too realistic if you ask me: a hit in a leg slows down your movement, a hit an an arm - you can't use your weapon. But now the question is, how the heck are you supposed to heal if the game has no medics and there's a fortified machine gun nest in front??? Pointless. The only thing I REALLY enjoyed, though, is being a machine-gunner myself: those tracers and ricochets, and plumes of dust when you hit a cement wall are impressive. Expand

Personally, I love the game. The time it takes to deploy to any map in single or multiplayer takes to long though. I spend 20 minutes waiting for the map to come up and stop deploying in any game.

The design of the maps is good and the sounds are also nice. The teamplay is awful as an overview is lacking. Also the maps are pretty big, so it takes a while before you meet the enemy. Furhermore the chosing of the figures you wanne be is not pretty, cause the popular rankings are gone fast (sniper, etc.).

Well I appreciate that Tripwire has tried to create a realistic WWII FPS but sorry it doesn't score well with me. I see fans of realistic FPSes saying that well you can't swap a mag in 2 seconds, you can't run really run that fast, etc. etc. Well you're actually wrong. The reload in this game was timed pretty decently. First of all, you're assuming the role of a well-trained soldier which knows his weapon well and will be in good physical condition. Except if you're playing the Russians who just threw recruits out there like no tomorrow or if it's 1945 at the fall of Berlin and you're an old man or a kid with a Panzerfaust or a Luger. But for the majority you will know how to use your weapon and take care of it to a pretty decent extent. What this means is you should run alot faster and be able to sprint longer, sighting your weapon should be quicker, recoil should be lessened, etc. etc. Developers need to realize that realism DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUAL SLOW. The vehicular combat could be better if you had more awareness. It is realistic but you must remember most people who play PC DO NOT have microphones meaning there will almost be little to no communication between a group of people in a single vehicle. The graphics of this game are well done, especially the richoeting mg bullets, (nice touch) the vehicle handling is also well done, the damage ratio is good, the sound is also pretty awesome. All in all, a good attempt that is fun for people that like the stereotypical slow tactical fps but for most it's going to be a pretty crappy time. Expand

This game was poorly designed from conception. First off, you designed a cheap game, setup a cheap site, and assumed that making a multiplayer environment would woo the crowds. First off, you designed a cheap game, setup a cheap site, and assumed that making a multiplayer environment would woo the crowds. Multiplayer games are successful because of their social aspect for one, and Red Orchestra does not do that any better than CS:DOD (competitor/alternative). Take a hint from CS, COD, Quake, etc. Build a single player game first, then develop the multiplayer for those who couldn't get enough. I am sure that you are saying that since Unreal did it, so can you. This is true... On the same token, you have to acknowledge that Unreal is your competitor, and a strong one at that. Though your product is cheaper, I am more likely to pool my money into Unreal because it has a larger community and more servers with more people which equals more choices (which consumers like). I do have to applaud you on your tactic to get more people online with Red Orchestra in the hopes that they would buy the game (and to appease current owners who can't find people playing online.). I personally thought that it would be a ploy for a single player game that would put me all the way through 12 chapters in a 13 chapter series and that I'd have to buy it to finish the game (that could be a good strategy on the tail end of a games life...) Moving along... The graphics are worse than CS:Source, which is surprising with the Unreal engine. The play is slow b/c the maps are too big. Unreal successfully allowed players nonstop playing with nihl downtime when they got killed (nihl downtime and no hike to get back to the battle) The tanks cannon can only be moved with the keyboard. To get more fanfare I propose the following: (surprisingly) Create a singleplayer option. More action with less downtime. Use the graphics engine your paying to license and push Unreal to its limits. I felt like I was on a Commodore. Overall, if this was your first game, good for you. I'm sure you'll produce some quality things over the next years (hopefully Red October 2). Expand

Any complaints about bots is irrelevant as it is a multiplayer game. Also there is a large community of dedicated mappers/modders who are releasing lots of quality maps and additions. Never have trouble finding many full servers playing the maps i like.

Basically this is a game for men, the boys who can't handle the real world mechanics and complain that the game doesn't run because of their rubbish computer can go and play counterstrike or dod:S, whilst giving games 0 scores purely because they're rubbish at them.

As a sidenote $25 is a bargain for this game, its continually being developed with patches (directly through steam, hence you won't notice), and is also releasing new content such as weapons, maps, vehicles etc for FREE until at least late 2007. As well as the developers actually listening to suggestions and thoughts from the community. Thats a few things you won't find from EA, and their BF2.

It´s a 08/15 shooter. Very rarely detailled maps. Dammed long loading times for a graphic, that is much worse than the source graphic maybe in HL2.

The maps are too large, so there´s no real action. You just run to get to the pont of action. Run very long. And then you get killed by a camping sniper. Wow, what a bad game. Even the open source shooter "Nexuiz" is better.

Some of the maps are bugged, meaning you will find yourself stuck unable to move in rough terrain. When there aren't enough ppl playing, the server autoinserts bots, which I feel is a letdown. The bots are simply too dumb to follow basic commands on some of the maps (ie. follow me) and many times just stand there doing nothing, blocking doorways, and simply getting in the way of your fire. Nothing is more aggravating than seeing a couple of solo players infiltrate a heavily defended area with bots, and for some reason the infiltrators fly past these things no problem. I have also noticed that when first turning on the game there is supposed to be a 'news' update that first shows up onscreen that updates the community to current events. Ever since I installed the game that section has been bugged, the news will flash onscreen for about a second and disappear. It's little bugs like these which are easily fixed. The developers that made this game need to continue to patch the game to fix these issues. Otherwise I feel this is a fine game, just lacking the patching and updates that a professional game provider/designer would implement in a real world simulation. i.e. Everquest updates their game practically every week. I have owned this game going on 5 weeks, and still no patch. Expand

This game is very realistic and after some practice even an old guy like me can score in the top 5 players. This game is to FPS what IL-2 was to combat flight sims. No arcade game, its a bit hard to learn but I never really tire of it. This game is about tactics teamwork (e.g. you have to resupply ammo to your machinegunners - hint: it scores you 5 points) and being smart in combat. You need to learn to use cover and actually aim to kill your opponents. Some of the new custom maps are just incredible now that they have opened up design to the user community. Tank battles are fun and realistic but I love playing infantry. Some of the most fun things are learning to shoot from the hip and using melee attack in close quarters urban combat; learning to call in artillery with devastating effect; or destroying a giant JSII or Tiger tank with your panzerfaust or satchel charge. Finally the recoil, aiming, sight view and sounds are extremely realistic. As a WW2 buff, I own (or owned) and have fired several of the rifles and pistols in the game and I can tell you its almost as fun as shooting the real thing. You have to account for bullet drop for long shots (and probably wind too). I bet the machine and submachine guns are equally realistic but have no firsthand experience. Finally, to really enjoy the game get a headset with a mic. It makes teamwork easier and the better sounds give you clues about potential dangers/ targets. You can hear the footsteps and heavy breathing of winded players nearby and hear the bullets and artillery pass by or over you. Other fun titles like Day of Defeat, Battlefield series, Counterstrike don't even come close to this title for lasting fun and realism. Go buy it - its the best $25 you'll ever spend. Expand

The infantry combat is superb as well - tactics are very important. Rushing forward while doing the spray and pray routine will get you quickly mown down just like in real life. You have to put more thought into your movements - like crawling instead of walking, flanking instead of assaulting the front. The team the works together will consistently beat the team that does not, even when outnumbered.
And if your a history buff, RO will definitely satisfy. For instance, I was happily surprised that they included not one, but three different versions of the Russian infantry rifle that was used during WWII.

This said, the graphics engine is quite outdated, and that gives a bad impression to newcomers. Those who don't care so much about that, but about gameplay and depth, won't be dissapointed. This is a "hardcore" game: the amount of keys, the very slow pace and the attention to detail - that encompasses a high level of realism - is big enough to satisfy mature players with a love for good, serious games. This is no Day of Defeat or CounterStrike - that are faster and far more "to the point". It's also much slower than the Battlefield series, so although it may be catered to a similar public than these games, it could be slightly difficult to pick up. It takes about a day and around 10-15 matches to actually begin to figure out what's going on. So it needs a lot of commitment. If you are willing to get yourself inmersed in a very realistic simulation ot WW2's eastern front, there is a lot to enjoy in this game. The sound effects are good, as some of the textures and models. Others show signs of age - but the amount of work and skill shown by the programmers, and what they've done to the UT2004 engine is like a miracle. Unfortunately, although some maps are brilliant, deep and inmersive, other are not so enjoyable. The worst of this game is that its engine is too old to really be a full-fledged (and full-priced) commercial product. It doesn't quite feel like a mod, but like something we would like to see updated. Overall, a 7 seems like a good score. The game should really receive an 8, even a high 8, but the price tag is too expensive for such an outdated engine. It's an amazing effort, a mature, realistic simulation, it's just a real shame that its engine shows its cracks, really a shame, as the amount of work put on this game is huge and it feels really special and worth many hours. In the other hand, it plays flawlessly even in low and mid-range computers (not surprisingly). To end this (long) opinion, I think most of the people who complain about this game have been put off by its graphics, and haven't really given the game the time it deserves to be experienced fully. It will not be enjoyable for many multiplayer FPS fans, specially for younger and/or more impatient ones. It's pace is extremely slow and you have to walk long distances if you don't choose your character class carefully and know what you are doing, what can lead to the impression of walking around doing nothing only to be blown to bits by a tank - as some comments here show. For the mature gamer it's a jewel. A real one. It will satisfy hardcore gamers with its unbelievable detail and strategic depth. There are not many games like this, and it does need to be played along with tools such as TeamSpeak and a good, dedicated group of friends / clan members. The fact that tanks can only be useful with 3 crew members working together and communicating effectively shows the intended audience. This is not a lone-wolf FPS to spend a couple of hours with. If the developers had put a lower price the game could be an instant hit, I am sure Red Orchestra 2 with a better engine will be a major success on the community. But please, if you don't like it, don't say the game is bad... because it's not. It's brilliant and truly amazing, and over 25's will appreciate it in all its extent. Those kind of gamers are also not so concerned about how old the graphics engine is, so they might feel more inclined to forgive some of its glitches and the overal rigidness of UT2004. Expand

Huge learning curve, takes a VERY long time to be able to get on average more than one kill a life, but when you do, you will LOVE this game. This is without a doubt the best WW2 shooter game I have ever played! It may very well be the best of any FPS game I've ever played as well. The tank combat is by far the best. With teamwork, even driving can be harrowing!

This game is more than likely the absolute worst FPS game played in recent history. It's glitchy, your character moves extremely slow no matter what, the graphics are only a little better than DOD 1.6, Terrible sound quality, Whacky physics, Way too much recoil, It feels like it takes you 5 minutes to reload, maps and models are aweful and it's just plain boring. I'm glad I never wasted any money on this game but I really, really regret downloading it for free. If you were into E.T. for the atari then this game is right up your ally. Honestly, i'm embarrassed for the developers of this slow paced drooling. Expand

Most realistic shooter I've ever seen. The depth of the maps, and wepon realism make it worth a 10. Plus busting a Commie tank with a panzerfaust and watching gore and bodyparts come outta the commanders hatch is a big plus. I highly recommend this game. 1. I absolutely love the attention Tripwire has given to the small details in the game.

There's very little gameyness in RO and a whole lot of gritty crawling along the ground so you can flank over to that machine gunner and allow your team to advance to the next spawn point objective.
  3. Red Orchestra is an enjoyable, team-based online shooter for those who like the Battlefield-style games but want a more technical and realistic experience.
