While Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered doesn't bring any new content to the ten year old game, the graphics upgrade is well worth checking out, as it brings it up to par with all but the top-tier AAA titles of recent times.

Like a few years back it still is tremendous and unadulterated fun to dive into this open world that doesn’t even try to pretend to be anything but a playground of destruction.

Red Faction: Guerrilla was the last Red Faction solid experience, and its remastered version delivers all of its funny and epic moments in glorious 4K resolution. To top it off, it's free for those who owned the original on Steam.

I would recommend Red Faction: Guerilla to anyone who likes sci-fi and third person free roaming. While it lacks an intuitive story line, the gameplay makes up for that by being original and engaging. I did, however get bored after playing for long periods of time so I recommend playing in spurts.

There aren’t really any new added gameplay features or modes that I could discern, which is a bit of a shame, but the game on the whole has actually aged very well. Also the lack of new features is more forgivable when you see how low the price tag is (considering most remasters generally charge full retail price). So if you never managed to play this destructive jewel back in the day, or if you are feeling somewhat nostalgic and traded in your copy years back, I would certainly recommend a revisit to the Red Planet.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered shows a lot of contradictions: we can find the same amazing and never equaled free approach, but also a very old-fashioned game world that results too much empty for today's standards.

It's remarkable that in the last 9 years games such as Just Cause 3 or Battlefield 4 never surpassed Red Faction: Guerilla. Which makes this remaster more than worthwhile to play.
  8. Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered gives you a massive destruction potential and guerilla style combat.

Red Faction Guerilla Re-Mars-Tered is a steady remastered version, which never really shines. Any player who had never given it a try should consider it now, keeping in mind that it’s a 9-year-old game.

The story isn’t memorable, the combat is lackluster, and the large open world isn’t full of many interesting things to do. However, I do still thoroughly enjoy blowing stuff up, knocking stuff down, ramming vehicles through a building’s foundations, and collapsing a bridge with EDF forces driving over it … do I have a problem?

Changes this remaster brings are limited to textures, lighting and higher resolutions. After a decade that brought us an array of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Just Cause games the only thing that more or less stood the test of time in Red Faction is the destruction system. [09/2018, p.50]

Yeah, it all looks really good when it works, but that doesn't help the problems of the base game. [Issue#272, p.59]

Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered brings nothing new to the table except some graphical enhancements. It is still the same old game with outdated mechanics and rudimentary gameplay (especially now). But the game can be actually pretty fun if you are in the mood for brainless destruction, which is something that everyone needs once in a while. And hey, it is free for the owners of the previous version.

Red Faction: Guerrilla’s biggest strength is without a doubt the sheer amount of fun you can have smashing things across Mars. Sadly, that initial enjoyment doesn’t last long as you proceed to do the same missions over and over again.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a retro game, unfortunately not in the good sense of the word. Except destruction of everything imaginable, the game only has an average story, chaotic action, and old visuals, despite all the care. [Issue#288]

Full Review »
