I don't even know what to say about this game to be honest, being a serious gamer, I expected big things from a game which had Bethesda involved in it even if it didn't create it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game looks and plays beautifully. I am using two Nvidia 295 with my I7 at 3GHz and the game just runs smoothly for me. I love the racing portions! It is kind of like pod racer on wheels. On the shooting side it gives you a somewhat engaging story with an "open world" environment. If you look at the review dates it seems that most people made a review when they couldn't run the game. Cry babies! For the rest of us it is just another great id game. Rage will be a great new franchise for them. Thanks Carmack!
    Update:
I only have one grief point. The single player campaign is too short and the ending feels abrupt. In fact it feels like that somebody suddenly wanted to push out the game... Sadly, I had to lower my score now!

10/10. This is the best shooter I've played in a long long time. I have never had this much pure fun factor since the 90's shooters. Don't let people in here that are too stupid to get it working right ruin a chance at enjoy this game. Did it have driver issues? Yep. Will it be fixed? Yep. Still, the game itself is GOTY this year unless Skyrim knocks it down. No more generic CoD / BF games here.

Stop trolling really and do something about it yourself, buy new hardware, update the game and drivers, apply fixes, there are so many ways you can improve your gaming experience instead of giving the game a low score cause you are lazy.

The game is fantastic, read my previous review for more information, currently playing the DLC which i find to be rather different from what i expected.

All in all a fun game, if you have issues solve them, don't be a idiot.

Each character is uniquely detailed with trinkets, tattoos and clothing that give them an original personae. The voice acting and mission briefings are clear and concise as to give the player a direction in the game. The key is talking to everybody. Side quests often open up new possibilities in the game and although Rage is a first-person shooter, the role playing elements add to the charm of this game.

What i dislike on Rage is that linear feeling, i cannot go where i want, so i'm limited by accepted missions, where i'm allowed to go.I dont understand why it consumes 21 GB on my hdd. Second problem is, when i exite active mission, for example i went from sewers to waistland, i completed 2 of 3 objectives, killed all bandits, and later i went back to the sewers to finish 1 remaining. all bandits were alive again at the same position as before. Music is OK, but repetetive, looping from middle of the song. Weapons, shooting and sounds are awesome, moving is perfect. Enemies are retarded, sometims shooting to wrong directions, but the know trick jumping, they will surprise you at the moment you dont expect. Also their conversation is funny. Racing is OK, funny. Rage can entertain you for long time, if you do forgive developers and publishers for releasing unfinished game.

From me, 7/10. Will i buy any new PC game this year ? No. PC gaming is over. Rage is proof of it.

Once you iron out the problems with the game, it's an absolute blast, as I expected. The action is fast paced and over the top, the arsenal large, varied and unrestricted, and the controls smooth and responsive. A lot of it is pretty standard Id fare (though hugely polished and modernized), but the rest of it is incredibly solid too. Ther story is passable, but honestly, anyone who is playing this looking for interesting character development and an engaging plot has clearly mixed up Id with Bioware or someone similar. For those that weren't for some retarded reason expecting Fallout 3 or Borderlands (both of which are inherently inferior in terms of their FPS mechanics) and instead were hoping for a polished Id FPS with light free roam elements and a polished racing mechanic, I think this game should be entirely satisfying. I have just played Rage for 2 hours and so far I'm pleased with the game. Sure, its gameplay is not revolutionary and the graphics pop in if you turn left/right quickly, but it's fun to play (and mostly to watch) nonetheless. Tip for those having fps and tearing issues: change you video card setup to "let the 3D application decide" for most of the settings; don't force v-sync on or off. If this doesn't work then you might need a new rig even if your current one meets or slightly exceeds the recommended system requirements. I'm saying this because this is a nextgen engine, which historically requires a beefed-up pc. Remember, when iD released Doom 3 there were no graphic cards capable of running it maxed out yet (it required a video card with 512MB of video memory, which was unheard of at that time). I would have loved to continue playing but my head started to throb and my eyes are sore because this game delivers one of the worst visual experiences money can currently buy for the PC. First thing I noticed right out of the box was this game has THE worst screen-tearing I've ever seen in any game I've played. Tears pop up so frequently and are so big that they take a decent chunk of our screen. Next is the infamous texture pop-in which means textures don't load until you look at them. You don't need to have tech understanding to see how this sounds really stupid. What this means is that textures visually load when you look at them, so every time you go around a corner or move around everything is all blurry. Even when textures do load properly they still look low-res and everything is so under-saturated the game might as well be black and white. Add this to the fact that on release this game had NO graphics options of any description so all of the above was not fixable. This is by far the worst game I've played in a long time and one of the worst console ports I've ever seen. Expand

Bots, turrets, dynamite bolts, and pop rockets are a few of the craftable items that make combat all the more fun. Enemies dodge and cover and roll to give a good challenge. Anyway, I had to buy this game to see the new engine and see what Cormack and co have been up to. Initially I was fairly disappointed by buggy graphics, texture creep and screen tearing, but the recent patches to the game and updated video drivers have essentially solved these problems. I'm now getting a beatiful graphical experience with no tearing, minimal texture pop-up and a solid 60FPS. (Q6600 @3GHz, 560Ti 2GB VRAM, 4GB RAM, 1280x1024).

The gameplay is reasonably simplistic, post-apocalyptic, quest driven FPS/RPG. However, it is certainly cut from the same cloth as Doom and Quake. I constantly find myself smiling away as I circle-strafe round mutants fragging left, right and centre. I didn't realise how much I miss the action-arcade style of FPS since everything's gotten a bit too realistic and creepy-creepy, one-shot-one-kill. This is nothing like that and all the better for it.

The driving elements are again fairly simplistic, but well executed and they add value.

This is the most fun I've had on my PC for quite some time. The graphics are definitely next-gen and the bugs are largely fixed (on my setup at least). I think it's a shame this game had such a troubled launch. It deserves to do well.

The games they have always put out have been straight up FPS games that push the quality of graphics forward. They have never put out a game with a solid story but they are moving towards that. The combat parts of this game are very solid and are what its all about. I can see what id is trying to do, they are trying to make a more well rounded game not just a straight up shooter. This missed the mark by a bit but they aren't too far off. The story isn't the strongest and you should be able to customize your guns to your own liking, that's why I only gave it a 9. The game really shows me the potential for games coming out of id after this. Driver support for controllers is a nightmare; I lost count of the number of times I went through various processes, restarted my iMac, etc, etc, before finally getting the blasted thing to work. The game itself is filled with dire, dull, excruciatingly bland cut-scenes which cannot be skipped. Replete with characters it's tremendously hard to give a monkey's about, and who spiel out the most unutterably bland dialogue. "I'm a mechanic. You can fix your car here. Press Y to have me fix your car. You can also call me by radio..." Bluergh. I've taken to checking my emails / cutting away from Rage whilst the dull-as-ditchwater cutscenes play out. Gameplay is uninspiring. The RPG / upgradeable element is almost non-existent. 'Choose one of four armour suits, which'll give you a static benefit throughout the game.' Great. Firing weapons is remarkably tedious: all weapons have 100% predictable stats (unlike Borderlands), with crosshairs that *do not waver one inch*, even in hyper-zoomed sniper rifle mode. There's no element of chance, either; every weapon (even the pistol) hits 100% if your entirely stable crosshairs are 100% on the target. Bleurgh. Silent weapons - afaict, and having completed the single campaign - are utterly pointless, bringing no benefits whatsoever. Even the potentially interesting weapons - like mind control bolts - turn out to be futile 95% of the time, and only marginally less useful than usual bullets the other 5%. AI is dull. Everyone behaves the same. Everyone seeks exactly the same cover points: keep throwing grenades until everything's obliterated. Things only get remotely interesting in the later levels, with LARGE hordes of melee fighters. Penultimately, the racing rapidly switches between ridiculously easy and a matter of raw luck; the 'driving' aspect of the game only brings 4 cars with it, each of which have a very finite number of worthwhile upgrades. Finally, the campaign is chuffing tiny. Like, 11hrs and 20 minutes in - and I thought I was taking things slowly - I've finished a 'normal' campaign. Replay value feels minimal, though I'm trying to gather the inspiration to have a go at 'hard' or 'nightmare.' Compare that with Borderlands - the best part of a year on, I've got 2 characters running the various campaigns, with well over 60hrs of gameplay between them. I was kinda stunned when I realised I'd finished Rage, in a very much 'is that ACTUALLY it?!' kinda way. On any replays, I'll look for a bit more in the way of side missions / exploring... but I get the feeling there isn't much there. All in all, vapid, dull, characterless, bland. Beautiful scenery. But - good grief - I really can't understand why anyone would choose this over Borderlands. Or even Bioshock (or Bioshock 2, soon to be released). Particularly on a Mac, at the moment, Rage is nowhere near worth it. Expand

I was expecting a story. Everything is scripted so obvious. Really boring. Disappointing. The IA is so dumb...
Every mission is essentialy the same over and over again.

Unplayable with a Ati Radeon HD 6790 graphics card, you have to downgrade to driver version 11.8 to be able to play. This game is more trouble than it's worth.

Nice looking, but a bit slow in action and way too buggy. It is amazing that this game was released as it was - with major problems on very common video cards - but it is even worse that several months after the release major problems exist.

It seems that a lot of individuals are having problems with the programming of the game. Now I can say that I just recently bought it and beat it AND I HAVE NOT encountered any crashes. None what so ever, the game has been patched and that's it. Minimal glitching if ever, I got my car stuck once in the entire game. If you don't save often, you will pay the price. The hardest setting is underestimated, it is brutally hard, sometimes just getting hit once you will die. I did beat it on nightmare mode, but I saved often and I am a veteran FPS. If your not and think this is going to be some Halo legendary difficulty. You will be wrong, an average soldier needs to be hit at least twice in the head WITH A SNIPER ROUND to kill him. You will never on nightmare difficulty, kill an authority with one bullet. They have what is called a Fat Boy, which is an expensive round and probably one of the most powerful. Still going to take 3 or 4 shots. The story is intriguing, but I wanted a little more information on the history of present and past. The asteroid hits and destroy's mankind and then you start playing. I want to know more of the last 50 years, a little more give would have been nice. Spoiler somewhat here, be aware........The most problematic contusion with the game, is that this game is seemingly supposed to be the start of a franchise. That being so, if the game is not continued into a sequel anytime soon, then the story ending is without a doubt horrible. It is a 20 second ending, that is all they give you.

Pros........ The game is totally atmospheric, and brilliantly designed with the beauty of a grand canyon like symmetry. The graphics are phenomenal, the reason why viewers are upset is that objects you are not looking at will degrade in texture. Usually if your out in a very large opening, by tweaking the graphical settings, this is fixed. On the regular setting it does downgrade textures you are looking at, this because not everyone owns a super computer like myself. Wider audience is what they were shooting for. The enemies intelligence is surprising and cunning. The way they hide and communicate, the true terror of being chased down by a group of mutants. This is without a doubt one of my most adrenaline fueled games I have played recently. The character acting is well done, it is short, John Goodman in the begging, I would have liked to have seen more of him, his style in the initial start is intriguing. The animation is on bar with some of the best games out their, facial appearance of the character is one of best. Only being beat by the likes of Crysis. The races are surprisingly fun and addictive, leveling up your ride with race certificates is fun and rewarding. And you will need a better ride if you chose to survive in the wasteland. You can win money, by participating in Mutant Mash Tv. Each episode of the tv show gets increasingly harder. With the cash from the show, you can upgrade your weapons with better ammo or buy better weaponry. The game does a good job at showing you were to go on the mini map, I would have like an interactive map that blew up on to my screen. But it was efficient, I liked the way of the dotted line points you to where you are supposed to go.

Final thoughts- I am much intrigued with how they fixed the game from it's initial launch. Yet by having inefficiencies during the launch. It has haltered and almost created a cult like negative talk about the game. If players were to play it today, they would not see the same game on launch. It is fixed, but maybe to late. I waited to buy this game, and bought it for $5. Now after paying for it, I would have bought for $40. But their just isn't enough their for a $60 purchase. I recommend it, but not at a premium cost. The game gets a 7.8 out 10 from me.

This amazing feature comes from id's new ID TECH 5. IT5 is a wonderful benchmark in the video game industry, although that being said, it does have its problems. Upon load up the game, I encountered a barrage of texture problems and I heard many others did too. If you can mange to get your drivers to work like I did, then you should be fine for the rest of the game. Every detail in Rage is perfected with astounding accuracy. From the sewers to the streets, Rage pays a close amount of attention to detail. Even the characters will make you stare in awe for a second, even if they don't carry the plot forward. On that subject, the characters play an important role, at least in the first half. The first half of the game is an involving and interesting story. The characters will make you want to find out more about your mysterious awakening. However, after the big turning point, the plot suddenly becomes bland and generic, to the point where I didn't care anymore. In fact there are several pot points that are mentioned, but never carried out. The ending is so abrupt and short that I didn't even realize I had beaten the game, I though it was just a awkward cut-scene. Through out Rage the are a couple Boss battles, which usually involve a colossal sized mutant. Yet, despite all the build up, there isn't even a sign of a boss at the end, which used to be a tradition in id games. Rage offers a sort-of small multiplayer mode, as compared to other id games which focus primarily on that. There are 2 options, A driving mode where you drive around in your customized buggy and snatch up objectives for points. And the Co-Op mode, where you and one friend run through a section and eliminate all AI enemies. The multiplayer is fun, but ultimately didn't last for me. I ended up beating all of the Co-Op missions and got bored of the driving.

Rage is a fun shooter. id software made an impressive comeback in the FPS genre that they created. The environments are gorgeous and the gameplay is superb. Although its plot and character flaws are a real issue, the majority of the game is fun and interesting. I very much look forward to a sequel with improved mechanics.

Really just a very underrated game here, the gunplay is so satisfying, it makes the gunplay in games like bf3 or mw3 feel 'soggy' if that makes sense. Sort of like the difference between typing on a nice high quality mechanical keyboard VS typing on an old beaten up cheapo dell rubber dome keyboard.

The story was a little lacking, and I would have liked to see a few more rpg-ish elements here and there, but overall it is just a blast, from the shooting to the driving to just being really fully sucked in to the world by the astoundingly good graphics (the sky in particular is really just amazing).

Simply unsatisfying. It had potential and it had hype. Neither were anywhere near fulfilled. Admittedly it does have those little things that make you believe when you hear about it, but when you see that it isn't all that developed you get doubly let down.
You can easily have fun with the game, but the entire multiplatform business ruined what could have been a real gem.

    Except I couldn't.
Because the launch was so bug-filled it took several days to work out the problems with my ATI card, which at the time (HD 6970) was one of the best ATIs on the market. But alas, the problems plagued it.
When I finally managed to get onto the game, again, the textures kept popping, screen tearing even with VSync on, etc. It was terrible.
I think I left the game for a while, waited for a big patch or two, then came back to it eagerly. The first two-three hours of gameplay were quite enjoyable, but quickly I began to tire. The same repetitive scenes with repetitive enemies were boring, I expected a more open-world sort of thing, like Borderlands, instead of the enclosed canyon walls. If there is more than that, I didn't get up to that because I never finished the game.
The weapons were another thing that annoyed me. Although I did love the wingstick, and the grenades/throwing items in general were cool, the shooting element was terrible. The assault rifle was terrible. It took damn near two magazines to kill someone! Although it /may/ have been some bad marksmanship on my part, it still took ages to kill people. The driving was a decent element, the races were pretty fun half the time, I guess. The crafting element was interesting too.

But overall, it could have been a much better game. The gameplay was repetitive and got boring very quickly, plagued by graphics problems, and even now I think my card struggles slightly due to bad optimization. The only thing that prevents me from rating this a solid 0 is the fact it's a decent attempt, some parts of the game are fun, although the story had me completely lost very quickly. Although the post-apocalyptic genre/theme has a lot of scope and if pulled off correctly, could become a fantastic game comparable to legends like Fallout, and Borderlands, but RAGE doesn't come close.
    I expected much more, iD.

Any other open world game came out 1~2 years ago can beat Rage's graphic, this is nothing but disappointing to see id failed on the PC like this, which was supposed to be their primary platform.

And the story is just plain and uninspired, I have no urge to keep playing after the first few missions, the world is dull, the characters are dull, and everything looks very dull. There's nothing driving me forward. Unlike Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, both sucked me in for weeks, even months, not even counting the DLCs by the way.

In the end, I just don't see any reason you would want to play this game, I don't see any merits in this game. Mind you this is very rare for me, I usually do find some small things that's worth noting in some very bad games, but in this case, Rage simply have nothing for me to recommend to others, so sorry to say this, but don't buy this game. Play Fallout or Elder Scroll series, that's the kind of open world game you would want to play.

How can you ATI users review a game and give it a 0 when you haven't even played it yet?! The gunplay is top notch. Weapons are interesting but familiar, but the ammo additions are pretty neat. You also get some secondary weapons that are really cool like EMP grenades, wingsticks (which are like a boomerang but decapitates, sentry bots, and turrets. The racing was a lot of fun and typically I hate racing games - but in Rage it took me back to the early Blizzard days of Rock 'n Roll Racing. I'll def continue to race in the multiplayer. The story isn't as deep as say Fallout 3, but then again this is not an RPG. Rage is a shooter. It's not supposed to have a deep story to satisfy roleplayers. However, I didn't see anyone giving COD4 a 0 cause it has a generic story. Basically this game is getting a bad wrap because of the ATI driver issue, which is in no way id's fault. Nvidia users are playing the game just fine and many of us are enjoying it very much so. If you are an Nvidia user I highly recommend you try the game. Give it a fair shake cause it really does rock. The megatexturing gives the city scenes and wide vistas a realistic level of detail with none of the immersion-breaking repeating texture artifacts you see in most games, and the character animations and texture details are excellent. After finally getting the right video drivers for my E8400 and 5850, to get smooth FPS, the game was nice.
Cool enemy animations, sick outdoor design, with themes of flesh and mech, as with all id tech games. Plus little bit rpg elements.
Not really worth 60 bucks, unless you're fan of grotesque art style games, I guess, with classic sawed off double barrel shotty action.

Honestly, most reviewers fail to mention the main draw to Rage: ATTENTION TO DETAIL FOR THE THINGS THAT COUNT. Sound, Models, Animation, and Environments are all incredibly detailed and well done. Yes, the interface in some of the mini-game dialogs was obviously designed for consoles and they didn't add in good mouse support. The voice acting is good, even if the dialog is plain / predictable like the story. I guess they could have gone the extra mile and hired a better writer for the dialog and main story, but I'm only marking off a little for the weaker points. I've been a PC gamer since 1994; I don't understand all the PC Gamer hate. I guess they feel abandoned by one of the last great PC game makers.

I just finished my first play through on hard and I feel the game is slightly let down though by the strength of the shotgun in the tight corridor areas, which number about 90% of the total mission spaces. You are pretty much golden once you get it. Graphically, as others have said there is an issue when you turn around and the textures are redrawn in detail about half a second too late. The textures themselves are poor when close up, but as you exit the games first room the vista is quite amazing. The brown-ness of the landscape does get a bit boring, as does the first few hours of the game without much story at all other than helping out some guys by being a one man army. The story in general is really bad quality, none of the cast have any appeal or character and there really is no final boss fight to speak of which is just a massive anticlimax, and reeks of a rush job considering some of the early boss fights. All the jobs actually have a decline button, the purpose of which, considering the alternative to doing the quest is doing nothing at all, would seem to be completely superfluous.

The racing side is enjoyable, the cars handle well and the combat/guns are OK, pretty much targeting on their own. The one down side is some later stages of the rally pick-up-point battles where you race towards spawning lights. The lights spawn in a cycle which really makes no sense and rewards (if you are in front) the people behind you, making it often better, although less fun, to just camp one set of points whilst the other three cars collect the remaining lights.

The combination of action/shooting and driving reminded me a lot of GTA 4. Rage really could have done with little things like cut scenes when introducing jobs, rather than taking inspiration from World of Warcraft. Running into the mayorâ

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was brilliant. The way it started, the way the story was told and everything else about it was simply faultless! The towns are fantastic, the graphics are unbelievable and enemy AI is pretty decent. The story of the game is quite thrilling as well. Yet it has one crucial fault that makes me rate it the way I have.

The Ending. Its horrible, beyond comprehension. I"literally went "wtf just happened here?" as the credits began to roll. They ruined a marvellous game by being lazy and pushing out the game before it was ready. When I went to the last mission, I had no idea that it was the last mission. I was expecting a huge ass boss with atleast 15 mins of incredibly fast paced lobbing of grenades and bullets and maybe my brother at it to kill it. But I was greeted with a small horde of mutants and 3 buttons. Yes thats right, the glorious boss fight at the end of the game is against 3 buttons. They werent even that tough to push to be honest. There wasnt enough of the game to justify its 20gig+ size! They have somehow setup the end to signal the coming of a sequel or DLC's, but the fact is that after such a horrible experience, I will never buy anything from this game again.

If you are a fan of endings that appeal to common sense, do not buy this crap.

I understand the harsh critics and low score the game has gotten due to technical problems. As for myself though, I only had to set one setting to get rid of tearing, and then ran flawlessly ever since. On to the game, while the textures are sort of muddy up close with certain objects, I find the world, atmospheric, and it runs very fluid, so it's a good tradeoff in my opinion. Worst thing for playability is stuttering and uneven framerates.

It's a game which mixes classical FPS, with some crazy driving physics and a bit of RPG, and it's not to be expected all parts come off flawlessly, or in great depth. The story is neglible, but it gives some context for your actions, the RPG bit, or rather, the fact that you got money and items and are able to make stuff - , I like it a lot, it's simple, but I wouldn't want a more intricate system, as it'd just slow down the pace. I have no great grudges against the game, it took me a week+ of casual gaming to finish, spending time with minigames and generally fooling around. Although, the end was kind of a anti climax. And what's the point wiht turrets vs spider sentry when they so easily may be tipped over? And you can't pick it up afterwards without dismantling into loot - unless it didnt fire at all that is, which helps a bit. But I don't see any reason to use it instead of spider in any situation.

The visuals encountered in the game are simply breathtaking. I remember 10 years ago seeing single frames of this sort of photorealistic quality take literally hours to render. To play games with a decent frame rate and graphics this good is truly a pleasure.

In terms of hardware and associated issues, my PC is a few years old with a fairly recent graphics card. It has 2.4ghz core duo / 2 GB RAM / Nvidia 260 GTX. Apart from the initial vsync / tearing issue, which has now been resolved with a vsync option, I haven't had any problems with the game. I highly recommend Rage.

I find so little to actually complain about- you have perfect fps controls, excellent driving, a toolset of different combat options that remind me of half life 2 or crysis or bioshock in terms of open-ended-ness. The enemy animations are so far beyond most games it's not worth comparing. The plot/narrative characterization won't win any awards, but the environmental storytelling will. It is its own character and it succeeds on many levels. That aesthetic direction appeals to my personal sensibilities more than others, clearly. And that's fine. 'ID tech 5' was actually just a slightly suped up bulletstorm engine and was used badly. The graphics are medioca at best with many glitches, boring combat and although there are a hell of a lot of weapons, they all seem a bit, samey. Co-op was also un-surprisingly boring with hour after hour of banging one's head against the wall trying to ****ing defibrillate yourself to life.
I enjoyed the classic ID titles: Doom, quake (Oh, I could gush about quake SO MUCH) and wolfenstein but rage is a title that should bring ID shame as such a poor comparison.

I have no issues with screen tearing unless I alt tab or shift focus off the monitor which is running the game full screen. Frame rates are near flawless. On the negative side, the textures are not high resolution, and as far as the texture pop in, it certainly is noticeable. Here's the issue I take up with all the haters here. It's laughable to have people complain about lack of story and how that is somehow a major flaw in comparison to other id titles. Doom obviously had a fantastic story with multiple plot lines waiting for resolution until the final moments...oh wait...they stuck you in a level with a bunch of baddies and guns and you had to find a way through till the glorious bloody end. id's forte is level design and software design. Rage is a great example of both. Having played both Space Marine and Deus Ex in the previous weeks, I can say with firm confidence that Rage far outshines them in pure FPS fun. It's the first game where I actually find myself shooting certain enemies in the leg/arm to momentarily open them up for a headshot. The level design is top notch. Both you and your enemies have numerous opportunities for cover and tactical choices. They use grenades effectively in a majority of cases. If they feel they have the advantage, they will press forward to a more aggressive position. When you start taking out members of a squad, they adjust to a more defensive position. Here's where I break from the pack. Rage does something that very few games have done in the past year or so. Dating back to Mass Effect and other Bioware titles (pre-3D), so many games have attempted to provide gamers with the illusion of choice, thereby mimicking free will. Rage does not rely choice at all excluding weapons, ammunition, and crafting. And to be honest, I'm thankful for it. I was getting tired of having to shoulder the weight of all the potential ramifications of my actions a la Deus Ex, Dragon Age, Mass Effect. Aaaand here's where I rejoin the pack. Rage would be great as a tech presentation for level design and FPS physics mechanics. The driving is pointless. The cities are pointless. Running around and gathering quests is pointless. They could remove all of the fluff and have a stellar game where you simply hop from one level to the next. All the additions are actually detracting from the core values of the game, and simply leading to a timesink in between fantastic shoot-em-up gameplay. Lower the price by $20, scrap the extraneous bologna and focus on the strengths. Expand

Also there are Iron Sights which I hate in FPS but you don't have to use it, the crosshair works just fine with all weapons besides the Sniper of course. The game has towns with NPCs that give you quests and sell you stuff like ammunition and ingredients for crafting, and also there are very fun minigames throughout the game. The environments are rich, with, for the most part, little repeat of objects making everything look fresh at each corner turn. The NPCs move well and die with satisfying drama and good animations. The shooting is solid and works well, with generally interesting environments, mixtures of cover and run and gun, and a nice heft and feel to the weapons. The problems, though, are many. The driving parts are weak, and while more fun that I expected, I wasn't expecting much. The 'RPG' elements are nothing of the sort. There is no variable character development , aside from choosing the armour at the start of the game. The plot is weak. At the end I was left with the feeling the last 2 or 3 missions were rushed to get the game out of the door. The last level and ending itself are most unsatisfying and a real let down. As a demo for a game engine it works well. I really hope Fallout 4, for instance, can make use of this engine to better effect. But as a stand along game by the end I was hurrying through to get it over with and, while the ride was fun for the most part the lack of depth, unmemorable characters and plotting and laziness on the part of id for the last 1/3 of the game make it little more than an average AAA title. That said, the is addictively fun. It is an very linear FPS with a bare but serviceable story, but everything clicked - for meat least: simple but fun racing, a good shoot em up, the beautiful scenery, the story, and the building weapons, even the minigames were both original and fun and that never happens. The FPS elements are awesomely butter smooth - I have never seen AI so good at evading you while coming toward the player AND the most amazing thing I ever have seen - actual acknowledgement of where they got shot. If you shoot an opponent in the side, he will grab his side; if you shoot him in the leg, he will limp. Also, they acknowledge your weapons and take evasive action accordingly ("watch out he is has a wingstick!"). I had a lot of fun customizing and building weapons; it's sort of up to you - do you prefer to build robots to walk alongside you, or just buy lots of armor and shoot it out. They have a stealth system but it's very very primitive at best, but you can try it. Finally, even though the game is not very hard per se (even Hard was very easy but hard on your ammo), they do keep uping the challenge level as you go, with enemies having more armor, or using creative tactics. At first, I though ho-hum they will just keep reusing the same space with the same boring enemies - they do reusue a lot of space, but it's done creatively and also there are some stunning surprises like Dead City or the Jackal bandits which was nothing short of AMAZING. So, I'll give it an 8, even though arguably it is really a 7. Expand

A little disappointed with this game.

I was hoping for something similar to fallout with large explorable areas. But it turned out to be quite a linear FPS style game. It is quite similar to borderlands, but even borderlands has wide open areas and a lot more freedom of travel. Rage has no wide open areas, not very explorable at all. Way too linear for my liking. Not a bad game,

Not a bad game, technically brilliant, well made, I enjoyed it initially but it is missing character, substance, storyline.
I stopped playing it a quarter way through simply because I got bored..

I'm just now getting around to playing RAGE on PC, and I gather it's a good thing I waited for both patches. My score will be higher than many simply because I didn't have to endure all the problems it had at launch. I didn't expect some magnum opus regarding story considering this is iD, so I'm not that let down there. You'd think that after Doom 3 it would also be unrealistic to expect decent textures, but after the much touted "mega-texturing" feature, I was hoping not to see Playstation 2-like, 8-bit color stuff at the very least. For every (just) decent texture, there are dozens that look just plain horrible. Like some other developers of late, they seem to have forgone texture artists in favor of shader code. I suppose this is yet another result of the recession/depression we are still having to endure, thanks to the current administration. Rage is mindless fun, like all other iD shooters, and truly is quite a bit more fleshed out than any game they've made to date. However, I can't see many developers lining up to license this engine, as it doesn't bring anything new to the table that I can tell. This is problematic for iD, who has always depended more on engine licensing than sales of in-house developed titles. Expand

Ok, its not that short if you are one of those people that like to get out the car look around and stop and smell the roses kind of guy like i am. I love looking at the universe of everything and taking everything in in a game. A game like COD which is really short, will still take me a little longer because i read everything and kind of stop and smell the roses.

The game starts your in an ark, you leave, go to nearest town attack some stuff, do a couple of missions check a sewer leave town, go to next town do a couple of missions do a few races fight the bad guys called Authority, open a satalite beacon thing, some things come out of the ground, that i guess have been in the earth for ages and its over. Ive gamed for a LONG long time, but i have to say what happened? Did they run out of money? it took 7 years to make this.

But the biggest question is, how did the guys at gearbox make Borderlands in 3-4 years with MASSIVE amount of content, tons of towns, heaps to do and tons of characters, monsters, interesting stuff and RAGE took 7 years and ......

Ok seriously, if you want this game, buy it for the IDSoftware deal on STEAM or something, RAGE will likely be included in the IDSoftware complete package at Xmas or something. But i warn you you will play it, get to the 2nd town and then get to the end and think, right the 3rd town(whatever it is, must be the last town and i'll get a finale.

YOU WILL BE SHOCKED when you get to the end.

IM saying this now, CALL OF DUTY the Modern warfare trilogy 1-3 was a MILLION times better than this game. Im serious. this has probably been really incoherant, because im still shocked at the ending of RAGE. People that say they werent surprised. DOOM had an ending ok? Even just the text at the end of Doom 1 or 2 was a better ending than this. Im serious.

GIVE THE POWER BACK TO THE PLAYER AND LET US DECIDE WHAT IS BEST instead of FORCING the game to run how YOU want it to. I have manually changed settings by enabling the command console and have fixed some issues but for some reason my Vsync will not turn OFF. No matter what setting i have it on the game forces a frame rate of 60 fps which is fine... except when it dips below and snaps back to 60 abruptly causing a serious lag effect. PC users like tweaking a lot of settings to make the game run custom to the player but no one wants to have to forcefully override settings to do it. Give us the options back!! As for the story, I haven't really been captured yet though the ambiance and the scenery seems nice. I am however disappointed that this game imitates a free world yet more or less restricts your path to a rather narrow walkway at times. It's essentially a false sense of open world/ free roam. I got the game on sale for 14.99 on steam this Christmas holiday so I'm not steaming but had I payed full price i would be. I will give the game a 6 in hopes that all problems are patched. the -4 is for total disrespect to PC gamers by ripping away our ability to change advanced settings and Mod cvars Expand

Rage is not a long game and its story is fairly weak with a cop-out ending but the shooting is masterful and the graphics are gob smacking. Usually I wouldn't rate a game this high without a impressive story to back it up but Rage has that old timely feel to it that has managed to blend into modern shooter mechanics making it a near perfect shooter. The PC version is slightly better than the console versions due to its higher graphical standard and it being made for PC to begin with. Expand

I also wasnt that crazy about the leveling system. This game does away with all the stuff I did not like about borderlands, in fact, prior to playing borderlands this game is what I thought borderlands would be.

The graphics (artwork) are top notch, and honestly they put alot of work in on artwork, and acting is good. Every new area I go to I find myself looking around and taking it in. Get this on a steam sale and you can't go wrong IMO.

I read alot about bugs and bad filters on this game but I experienced none of that on my system. i7 proc with 8ghz ram and 560 Ti Nvidia graphix card. All settings maxed out, 60 frames with a few drops in towns, but only like five frames here and there.

Hope this helped some bored dude like me.

    PS
I gave it 9 out of 10 because I am a big fan of sandbox games, and the co-op is a bit weak. You should be able to do the entire game in co-op, not just a few missions. Nice bonus they had that at least because that is what made me buy it to try it.

I kinda feel like I've been stolen, we should all bring them to court and get our money back, you can't get stuff that doesn't work on the market and steal peoples money like that, this should not be legal...

GOOD: Been a player since the original DOOM series... I play all the Id and Raven games... they are awesome developers and they never cease to break new ground. The beauty of the game and the feel of it is unmatched, it REALLY makes you feel like you are immersed in this world and in the story. They always set these games up that way... making you a nameless/faceless charachter so that you FEEL there, personally. As the professional critics said: they spread their ideas too far and wide; although the racing, weapons, variety of mini-games, crafting and quests are all very fun... they are abrupt and don't really fit in anywhere in the story. The story builds and keeps you in suspense but it falls off of a post-apocolyptic cliff and into a void. You are playing through and having good fun, you are waiting for plot twists or huge climaxes in the story, such as a town being attacked or something more happening with the charachters... but nothing happens. lol It's a 3-town/phase game and then you get the final mission... which was very fast and with NO BOSS. It ends so abruptly your head spins and you're eyes are as big as frisbees staring at the screen... waiting for something else ot happen, but nothing does. lol Then you're in a love-hate tragedy. I believe the focus of this game was NOT story (which was a massive mistake) but it was simply playing with all the new features and various aspects... it was a game of mini-games with a fast and dry campaign. MUCH MORE could've been done wiht the story here and you wish there was. Despite this being a novel of random blank pages... ALL other aspects are awesome and as usual Id manages to make a very fun game once again. (I know Doom 3 had me dissapointed in the same way though, being that the final level and CyberDemon boss was really a lame setup and too easy... this might be becoming a trend with them). The beasties and baddies and all the different bandits are awesome though, all unique to fight (although they all share the same voice in each tribe). The combat racing was pretty good. The weapon variety was fun; you can uniquely tailor your fighting style because there's so much you can do with killing-instruments and crafting. The world does look really amazing and nothing is cookie-cutter cut and past, all areas are unique which must've been A LOT of hard work. No hallways that all look the same or similar-anything, everything is art in the instances and levels. The aesthetics are always awesome. I also have the LOWEST requirements to run this game and it really run superb with my outdated **** Still looked great too with the minimal graphics card. (Other people complained and I don't know why... it ran just fine for me, the textures smoothing out quickly I didn't mind a bit).

Enemies are challenging to fight. It does get to be WAVES on some levels at times... but it's also a first person shooter that's challenging you, (so there's to be a lot of enemies at some points) and all combat instances are different, not just "waves". (Depends usually who or what you're fighting). The game is thrilling as well; no matter how used to these you are or how brave you are you still manage to jump quite a bit. The main boss in the Dead City will make surprise the **** out of you! They've always done an awesome job with this aspect as well... making great sci-fi horror games. Despite all these things they did well... most people are pissed off simply because the story is short and dry and the suspense that builds in you from the game ends up being for nothing. People love stories. Knights Of The Old Republic, released a decade ago, was a legendary game, primarily because of it's story, it was just fun and fantastic; you don't need a lot of flash and features if you have a great plot.

Many game makers for a long time at this point, have been neglecting what's really important and what made games great in the past in a race to outdo each other with "features". A great game is like a timeless hit-song, most of them are simple, they just know how to strike you. All-in-all I hope they create something like the originals again and can produce a plot that keeps you enthralled as well as a reasonably fun game. No one cares about a bunch of different towns, scenes and charachters that essentially do nothing and are like plantlife.

I bought this on the Summer sale, and what I was expecting was a fairly standard post-apocalyptic shooter with excellent gunplay. That's exactly what I got and it was pretty fun. I will say though, that the story is extremely weak, and that you really never visit any new areas, you are constantly going back to old areas and back-tracking which is pretty aggravating to say the least. It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
