No level-up system, however there are a variety of upgrades for weapons, vehicles, armor, and item schematics. Most weapons have multiple ammo types. Plus there are multiple ways to earn cash and items (just be sure not to blow up Bandits or Authority soldiers with explosives if you want to snag their loot). Not a bad game overall (once you circumvent the bugs), but don't expect the next best thing in the gaming industry. Expand

Very disappointing, just another **** generic shooter poorly ported to the PC. Combat is repetitive and boring, story is uninteresting and **** and definitely would not recommend to anyone.

id Software has lost all the talent. Now they cannot implement properly any driving dynamics, cannot process a headshot and cannot understand why nobody buys their **** software.

RAGE is just a bad copy of Fallout, rushed to market without any polish.

One of those games that not only game with a lot of promise, but started in such a way that you think, "this is gonna be awesome!"...inky to smash those hopes on the rocks a few too many times. The premise: Earth was clobbered by the Apophis asteroid (real rock, look it up for more info). Select survivors (including you) were buried in stasis in subterranean "arks," while the majority were left to enjoy a huge asteroid whacking the planet from the front-row seats. Nevertheless, there were survivors on the surface amid the destruction, and this is the world into which you emerge: blasted rubble, hardscrabble existence, and no shortage of conflict. So, great premise. Graphics are unbelievable, particularly the environments, vehicles, and especially the first-person weapon renders. Audio is great (SFX are top-notch). Writing is good (enough), voice acting very good. The crafting system for creating ammunition, tools, and weapons was clever and, amazingly, not tedious. So what went wrong? Well, in a word: id. Yeah, the old warhorse of FPS gaming, id Software (remember Doom? Them.) totally wrecked an otherwise grand game. Short story is that Rage suffers from ego poisoning. It's impossible to play for more than a few minutes before you run into another self-serving self-refence to another id game, be it Doom, Wolfenstein, or whatever. Look, I have no problem with easter-egg appearances. When I saw the space marine bobblehead on a dashboard within the first five minutes of gameplay, I thought "cool dev nod, nice." But after dozens of references, half of which were absolutely ridiculous, I spent more time rolling my eyes and getting mad at id than I did enjoying the game. (Seriously, there was a Doom hell prince as the texture for a COFFEE POT. Someone deserved to be slapped for that.) id's ego was out of control and disproportionally so; Bethesda Softworks snuck in one easter egg, a vaultboy bobblehead from Fallout, which was cool because it actually appeared in the original game, unlike the Doom hell prince which I don't think ever took up residence in small kitchen appliances. That aside, the game felt unfinished. Missions were clever and varied until the end, whereuoon the game took on an attitude of "we ran out of ideas, so here's some leftover 1990's style monster box gameplay and then we're gonna roll credits." Devs, take note, because this is what really screwed up Fallout 2: too many pop culture references. Game worlds, like film, are about suspension of disbelief. Keep bombarding the audiene with references and you blow that. Lose it and the experience suffers and the faults become far apparent. It's worth noting that I bought this game on the faith and belief in Bethesda's commitment to quality; by my experience, they'd never made a dud, and I had no reason to think they were going to start. One $60 mistake later and that trust was vapor. Six out of ten is very generous for this ego hodgepodge blended unevenly with an actual game...too generous. Make it five. Expand

I really enjoyed this game up until the end, where it just ended without any ability to continue playing the game. Not sure what was the point of upgrading vehicles, weapons and talk of how dangerous the authority is, when it was quite the opposite and saw really none of them. The ending of the game really made the journey through the entire game pointless.

As a shooter game, Rage has excelled in most areas: graphics, story, and possibly item variety. But the rush of a PC creation inevitably brings up horrifying issues: constant crashes, cliched quests, overhyped marketing and etc. Is it a fine game to pass by on a boring day, but not something that would grab the interests of a hardcore FPS player.

This is a shooter, that has an "overworld" where you get quests and you have to drive to missions on a buggy. You know the mission area begins because you have to get off your buggy.
Picking up items is tedius, shooting people is tedious, making things adds an extra step incase you werent bored enough, the maps are rehashed very early

The most fun I had was when I first killed an enemy because he jumped to the side and hopped on the cieling, and i realized there was not aquick meele button. The suck set in and now the only thing entertaining is crashing your buggy and flinging yourself into the mission.
The story is not engaging. There aren;t many "transition" animations where you get in a vehicle or grab a zipline, the screen just goes black sometimes, and that is really lazy. And for some reason when you shoot people in a town, blood gushes but nothing happens..
Lots of other problems but these jump out at me as actively deciding to not make a good game. I don't know why critics reviewed this so positively.

I said what the f*ucking hell?! If I can buy it in this **** country (Hungary), then it's out :) NO! I wrote to Steam, they answered it will work next day. THIS IS A JOKE. You hold a strongly single-player game in your hand and you cannot install, because it's not digitally distributed yet. Ridiculous! b) After I installed it, the game simply did not load. I made searches - "known" bug, only for AMD videocards. Hmm, I love games that got released, but not tested properly. That's why we pay FULL PRICE for a game? Of course not. c) Invisible walls pretending the player to reach certain places. d) You feel like you're running in a tube... the game is so linear. e) The objectives/quests (or call whatever you want) are primitive as a piece of rock. f) While the intro is cool, the ending of the game is poor in content. The difficulty was really serious at the end of the game, but I could survive, just because of a bug! I crouched next to a panel at the very last scene and because the enemies couldn't crouch, they "couldn't" kill me. LOL!!! g) Poor physics. h) Re-spawning enemies! WTF? i) Very short gameplay, even though I always explore every corner in every game I play! ---- Summary: The graphics is beautiful, the textures are very detailed and the small games during the gameplay could be very entertaining, though they are repeating. I played through the whole game and I felt like there is an expansion or Rage2 already planned, due to certain design elements... I saw huge possibilities in this game, but most of them remained intact. Possibility is not enough. 5/10 and I was so generous. What is sure, I will not _pre-order_ any more ID Software game...

-Why do the character animations look so weird? Everybody acts like they're in a Disney cartoon. Tons of facial expressions and hand talking. Normal people don't act like that. If I ask for help at Home Depot or Walmart, the employee doesn't make weird gestures and faces while talking.
-It feels very much like a low quality console game where someone had a list of things to include in the game. Driving, we need that. Our game also needs a store, and players should be forced to use the store because ammo isn't overly abundant. And it needs a questing system. And it needs a crafting system. It almost looks like the game started as Doom 3 then someone hastily tried to make it more like Fallout.
-The controls are rather odd. You use the F# keys to set your optional item and hit Q to use the item. That's fine and all, but why is a grenade considered one of the items? Shouldn't the grenade be the G key so I can throw wing stings with the Q key? Of course not. You're forced to set the item to grenade then hit Q to throw a grenade. Strangely, buttons F and G are used for previous weapon and next weapon instead of a more logical wing sting and grenade.
-It feels like the game gets in the way of playing the game. I'm forced to talk to characters I don't care about, help people I don't care about, drive to places I don't care about. Exploring seems to be discouraged. It's the exact opposite of Fallout.
-I've only played this for 4 hours, but it feels like I've only shot at things for 20 minutes. The rest of the time is driving and talking. The game simply lacks fun.
-Why are the game's opening movies not skippable? The game loads twice as fast if you remove the .bik files from the game's video folder.
-Why does v-sync turn off if I alt tab out of the game?

Having grown up on Doom, Quake and their numerous sequels and expansions, I've come to know and love the id Software conventions, the stylistic flourishes and absolute purity of the gameplay experience you can always rely upon. id Software have broken some of the rules with Rage, with both positive and negative results.

Unfortunately, at least with the PC release, few people are discussing the game itself and are more interested in **** about the games technical problems at release, which are still in the process of being fully resolved as far as I am concerned - the patch that was hastily put together over the weekend has fixed some issues, but despite having 1gb of RAM on my Geforce 8800 GTS, the games textures are sub-par and I cannot seem to override this. I know the game should look better than this, and unless I am expected to have a state of the art card or an SLI set up, I'm not sure why things are so blurry. But this brings me to my next point, which is the gameplay, and moreover, the pace of the gameplay and combat especially - things move fast, really fast. Enemies dart around, dodge and interact seamlessly with the many intricate details of the environment (more than the player can, I might add), genuinely fleshing out their presence and keeping you on your toes. The weapons are satisfying enough, and my favourite is the tried and tested id Software brand shotgun - the best damn weapon in any real game of note since 1993. The alternative ammunition types add yet more variety to the experience, and show that id Software have been paying attention to the other games in the last several years since Doom 3 in 2005... maybe a little too much attention, some might argue. First impressions of the game environment will inevitably conjure up (very fond) memories of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, only the visual fidelity (textures notwithstanding) is ramped up to the nth degree. Rage is a painterly game, with the id Tech 5 engine allowing the game's artists to literally paint their way through the game's design. Some of the most striking moments happen in the Dead City area early on in the game, with the ruins of urban environments, shanty towns, hospitals and subways really becoming incredibly vibrant and threatening. The stranger additions, more reminiscent of Doom 3, are bizarre and revolting and unfortunately, not exactly explained in any way. Leading into the plot...

The games story is threadbare, which is unfortunately another id Software standard feature it seems. Normally however it doesn't make much of a difference to the experience with their games, and this is almost true of Rage, but id Software have made a game that is banking itself on it's modernity, it's expansive open world, and it's range of characters you can interact with. All of these elements are more superficial, especially in comparison with games such as Fallout 3/New Vegas or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but in a sense, this is where id have got things right - what we want from them is a shooter, a total blast and a lot of thrills - not a realistic shooter with hours of preparatory exposition, legwork and wandering around in a state of confusion, which is not to say Fallout isn't spectacular, it's just a different kind of game altogether. The similarities are aesthetic alone. Unfortunately however, Rage's plot IS underdeveloped and ends all too abruptly, which is a common problem in modern games, it would seem (Deus Ex: Human Revolution is guilty of this, as is Crysis 2, and if I'm mentioning Crytek games, I'm going to mention Far Cry, as irrelevant as it may seem now - Far Cry (PC) had the worst ending to a game I have ever seen, and Crytek should be embarrassed still by it). I enjoyed the game thoroughly up to this point and hammered through it in pretty good time, but all in all was left feeling that there should have been more, and what I wanted more of was the FPS combat that Rage excels in. The driving component of the game is daring and satisfying, but nowhere near as interesting to me personally as exploring environments on foot, really taking in the details and the artistry of id's legendary design. The race sections of the game are fun though, as is the whole game, and the pacing of every element of the game never skips a beat. But unfortunately the game skips along at such a pace it eventually hits a brick wall and ends pretty suddenly. I'm looking forward to some meaty DLC, and particularly some imaginative mods that make use of the new technology (and how long until someone brings back REAL deathmatch to this game?) to really make this game something unique.

I've been a Carmack fan since my dad brought me a copy of the freaky new game called Doom at the ripe age of 6, but it is obvious that fame has crated more ego than talent in the past few years. Doom 3 was a technical nightmare on all systems; buggy on the pc, edited on the xbox, and bland save for the wonderful sound pack created by Musical Genius Trent Reznor, so I can't seem to understand why this got so much hype. It runs well on my ATI HD 6770, but makes me wish that I had stuck with an NVidia. It has a decent storyline, but I feel like I've played this game before. Several times. And not in an "Oh my God I've spent how much time on this Oblivion Character?" kind of way. The graphics run very smooth(now), but if you look in the corners all you see is black. And last but not least, Carmack is a stuck up a$$wipe with no shame for releasing a game that wouldn't work for most PC gamers who bought it regardless of the requirements on the box, and his comments towards pc gaming in general show that he has no respect for the audience of gamers who made id the company so powerful it could crank out a game like this with issues like this and still make a killing. I will play Rage through to the end, and I will most likely enjoy what I've started, but if Carmack doesn't want to make games for PC gamers and wants to call us a dying niche, than I formally withdraw my patronage to anything that id puts out in the future. Now I understand that this is probably caused by broken video card drivers more than by the game itself, and by the fact that this is virtually the only game that uses the newest OpenGL version, and that those issues will eventually be fixed, but knowingly releasing it in a virtually non-working state for the majority of ATi card users is just pathetic. But there's also no way around this fact: RAGE features the best gunplay in an FPS since FEAR, and if you skip it because of launch issues, you're cutting off your nose to spite your own face. With a modicum of know-how and Google searching, you can quickly correct the texture pop-in issue with a custom .cfg file and turn this game into a fantastic visual experience. Sure, there are some low-res textures - as there have been in every PC game outside of Witcher 2 - but the art design and overall graphics fidelity is something to behold once it's set up correctly with 8K textures forced and pop-in minimized. Just follow these steps (the top steps work for both Nvidia and AMD): http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/how-to-unlock-rages-high-resolution-textures-with-a-few-simple-tweaks

Now with that out of the way, I can confidently say that this is the first SP FPS I've played since FEAR where the gunplay is just amazing. The guns are all meaty with excellent feedback and feel. What also helps immensely is that the AI is surprisingly decent, making use of nooks and crannies in enclosed spaces to flank, crouch, duck, charge, and, yes, run away. That's a great detail - when you start taking fools out, there seems to be some morale trigger where the survivors try to retreat. Or they'll blindfire from out of cover instead of aiming properly. The Wingsticks at your disposal are also a beautiful addition to the combat, so you can shoot guys at some range properly without fumbling for a different weapon to switch to if one of them charges you. Both shotguns are awesome boomsticks, though I do love the alpha strike on the DLC dual-barreled shotty in particular.

And you know what? The RPG-lite elements id included here are about as well done as you can ask for had you tasked someone with creating RPG-lite elements in a shooter. The inventory makes a lot of sense and it's satisfying to pick up loot and drops from areas or corpses and then create your own gear on the fly.

Honestly, I hope the game sells well enough that id takes a sober look at what they accomplished and where they came up short, so they can start working on quality DLC and a sequel. For one thing, they need way more people - IIRC the team is just 60 staff. That's just not enough manpower for making a big game like this.

Ok this game is no where near as bad as most people here suggest!....

The game is quite linear with the missions/quests all linking together which often necessitates they be completed in the correct order before a new one can be embarked upon... though this isnt a strict rule and some can be overlapped... most missions are pretty straight forward and on arrival at the mission destination often include another sub-mission which is initiated & required in order to complete the first!..this can be a bit irritating after a few missions..but not overly so..
The graphics on my system nvidia gtx 285, i7 @ 4.2 ghz are smooth and often look amazing with great attention being given to the set pieces in each location..some are a true work of art...Sadly this is slightly spoilt on the pc version with pretty dismal and often very low res textures complete with pop up laggy texture drawing when quickly viewing another area of the environment then another....the lack of V-sync was solved in my case using Nvidia inspector and forcing it on..
The game is a sort of cross between Fallout 3 and Borderlands.....but its neither....and in some ways fails at both levels in some areas and also succeeds for what it is........its a shooter at heart trying to employ rpg elements/missions etc to maintain interest and longevity...but its a strange union that makes you wish sometimes it was just a pure free form rpg like Fallout 3..especially since the graphics can at times look amazing....but sadly this is no Fallout 3 beater...and the world is often devoid of life nad activity..until you hit the next scripted event around the corner!

But I like the game, its easy playing..it has character...the driving elements and races are in some ways similar to a dumbed down motorstorm on the ps3...but later on with added guns and shields and drop-able bombs etc to spice it up!
Gameplay when gun fighting is quite satisfying also..with enemies AI offering enough of a challenge for most players on the harder levels....and weapons offering the usual upgrade paths and so so variety...
The main issues with the PC version of the game in my opinion are the low res consolized textures!...yes the scenery is amazing at times and the set pieces and structures are amongst the best i have ever seen on any game, it just seems so sad and weird that the graphic options in the menu are non-existent....come on..i know this is a console port but wtf....there are literally NO options apart from a basic resolution and AA... and the resultant graphical issues limitations are very obvious...am sure tehy could of been fixed before releasing the pc port!... As they stand at the moment they do not seriously distract from the games enjoyment but they certainly dont add to it either!...and there is NO excuse for such LOW RES TEXTURES!

This game with some polishing and a high res texture pack could look awesome!....as it stands it just looks great....its certainly better than the stupid cell shaded Borderlands crappy graphics that some seem to wet their knickers over!..

but its ok..its def worth playing .....am giving it a 7..maybe thats a bit generous.....but its certainly worth far more than the 0's and 1' some here are giving it!....does it live up to the hype and previews....well maybe not..but what game today does!...most are simplified dumbed down console games to pc ports with shallow game play, low res textures etc...it seems developing games for consoles is killing any real game play and holding back on any depth of game play and a lack of graphical need or willpower to develop real TRUE next gen games..so this game sadly falls into that same simplified box as all the other simplified cash for console ports! games like the latest call of juarez the cartel...or even Deus Ex - Human Revolution.they all share the same problem CONSOLES!.......it shows in the lack of vision and lack of REAL development commitment towards a deep satisfying game.....and the new console area also shows a lack of any real interest to programme for PC's anymore (programming old code for old consoles does not require as much effort as pushing the envelope for newer DX11 technologies and the immensely superior capabilities of modern PC's)......sadly with pc piracy at an all all time high and most console games a sure fire win win situation financially for commercial games investors/developers..its hard to see a way forward for future pc games....this is a huge slap in the face for PC owners when you consider this game was released prob with knowing graphical bugs/glitches.(unless all the pc beta testers were BLIND!)....this pretty well sums up all the attitude of the shallow console games developers and their shallow slap in the face couldnt give a real **** to pc owners and their crappy port-overs today....

I would expect though that a game company such as id, that has been so successful because of the PC platform, to ensure that any title they release on it, be technically sound by the time the game goes gold. Sadly this is not the case with Rage. Only after a hurried "hotfix" patch from AMD as well as some graphics card tweaking on my own, can I play the game without getting a headache from screen tearing and texture pop in. The pop in problem is still there, but is not as annoying. Surely this will be fixed in a patch, and another driver update, but for id to release a game with graphical issues after boasting about idTech 5 for so long, is an insult to the community that put them on the map. The graphics do look nice at times, but seem quite uneven. Outdoor settings can look fine. Rock cliffs and skies can look amazing, and then you can look at the ground close to you and see nothing more than a low resolution brown mass.

The game itself is OK, and while I'm not one to be looking for the next NEW feature in a FPS, there is nothing in Rage's game play that stands out. I feel as though I'm playing Borderlands with different graphics. Not that that's a bad thing. I quite liked Borderlands, and I look forward to Borderlands 2. I just didn't think that I would be playing it so soon.

The voice acting is great, I hope John Goodman makes appearances in more games. The weapons are great as well. Control is fine, though Tim Willits says that a gamepad is the way to play, mouse and keyboard work fine, even in the racing sections, which I suck at. (Unfortunately, I'll have to grind my way through some races in order to be able to get some "quests").

There is fun to be had with Rage, and though I've picked on the weaker points, I am enjoying the game. As far as the PC version is concerned though, the game needs to have the technical issues addressed ASAP

I have been impressed with Rage. I admit I was a bit taken back by all the negativity. I have around 8 hours into playing. I have not experienced a single graphical issue or crash in the whole game. The only setting change I had to make was to force V-Sync on to eliminate the tearing (which is normal for nearly any game). This setting should have defaulted to enabled. Graphically, I have yet to see anything as nearly impressive. Props to John and the artists as id. I grew up playing all of id's games (well, since commander keen). Graphically, this game deserves easily a rating of 10+. Game play, the only issue I had was falling through the world once. Other than that, no glitches, no stuck enemies, etc. The AI in this game could be stronger. Most Enemies will only stay in a small zone and will not chase. Back up, get to a higher vantage point, then pick them off from a distance. Sometimes the AI did surprise me and really did pull some interesting moves. This is the first game that I have played that a friendly AI will push you out of the way so they can take cover. The interface for swapping out weapons and ammo was a bit confusing and needs a little work. A little color wouldn't be bad either. 8/10

Story, this could use some work. Story has never been an id strong point. I like a there to be a 'reason' behind the quests done. Something that make it flow together. Maybe a little more explanation and deeper dialog with the NPCs 6/10

I am not sure about replay value. Games like DeusEx or Dragon Age definitely have more replay value. Choose completely different paths in a game is a huge plus. I do wish the game had more of that. I am sure I will end up playing it through a couple times. Consoles have really had a negative affect on PC games. With no new consoles in the immediate future, I can only imagine that this will affect the PC game market even more. Hardware played on (2600K, 16gig, 580GTX 3gig, and SSD)

I am using a RADEON 6850 with the high definition textures enable and RAGE simply looks brilliant . I have never seen graphics this good in an FPS and I am a proud owner of both the CRYSIS games. The action sequences in RAGE are very well paced and incredible fun. You have a variety of choices for dispatching enemies and a wide variety of enemies to dispatch. Playing through the shooting sections is some of the most fun I've ever had in the FPS genre.

The shooting sequences are so good and I wish there were more of them. Instead, RAGE attempts to have "characters" and "story" and "side-missions" - none of these things have any place in an ID game. Doom, Doom III, Quake - these are ID's most famous and ground breaking titles and they all follow the same formula: Ground breaking graphics, cool weapons and linear progression from level to level. I'm a big fan of games that let you explore and experiment, but it just doesn't fit with an ID game.

Loved the shooting sequences, was not impressed by anything in between - 8

But I've had my breath taken away more times in this game than any other I can remember, even Uncharted 3. So much of my play time I've spent just standing and drinking in the incredible visuals. It's hugely pleasurable just to look at the environments. Perhaps it's partly the use of megatextures, but it's also the incredible amount of work which has gone into modelling and designing the environments. There's so much detail, so much variation, it looks painstaking, the amount of unique geometry, and the unique texturing on every surface, it's overwhelming, the visuals are incredible, I love them. So much detail in every scene, more than I'm used to seeing in games. This game is a real achievement, I think the developers deserve recognition and accolades for the design and the technology of this game, it's amazing.

It's also the artistry of the designers. A lot of times I'm standing looking at a scene and what I'm looking at looks like a piece of concept art rather than in-game graphics. it's incredible. And I can turn around and see another equally impressive scene.

For the record, I had no real technical problems with this game on my PC with an Nvidia card, although I guess I bought it after a patch had been released. The only issue I had at first was screen tearing but that was fixed with a simple launch option added with Steam and now the game is perfect. Great framerate (Nvidia GTX 560.

As for gameplay, it's pretty fun, I very much enjoy the shootouts, particularly with bandits. The game is of course very derivative, there seem to have been so many post-apocalyptic RPG-esqe FPSes. The closest comparison for me is with Borderlands although of course there are many similarities with Fallout 3 (though maybe they started work on Rage before those games came out?). But it doesn't bother me really as I'm finding this game more fun and immersive than both of those games. I could do without the vehicle combat, and the racing, to me they're kind of superfluous, I don't find the vehicle combat that enjoyable, I prefer the FPS combat, but then at the same time there's nothing wrong with it and the racing is a bit fun I guess, just not so much as the FPS combat which is great. Also I would've liked to be able to use a first-person view in vehicles.

Anyway, for the graphics and design alone I give this game 9 out of 10, the developers should definitely be rewarded and encouraged as much as possible as this game is an incredible experience due to the amazing environments, the unique texturing and the time spent on the masses of unique level geometry, and the design and layout of the levels, and the artistic backgrounds. It's incredible-looking and great fun to play. Not a complete masterpiece but a damn good game, worth £30 to me.

I had a feeling the outside world of wasteland to be very isolated, there is no open horizon, you are always driving inside a huge ramp. Even the otherwise beautiful view of dark clouds and mountains in the horizon is too static and does not add any liveness to it. The game play: i have started on normal difficulty level but soon switched to nightmare and still felt lack of challenge. Only the very last vehicle battles near the nexus and the nexus itself was a bit more "nightmarish", but not so hard you would expect anyways. Oh and the ending, the ending is plain horrible! I can only assume they made yet another mistake and simply forgot to put it in! That sums up (the absense of) the story. The shooting ... i found the shotgun to be well suitable in almost any situation, given its 3 all very usefull ammo modes. Just sprint to the enemies and pound them, same goes for the big guys in thick armor and miniguns. And that's at nightmare. Too easy! The only case you would really need another gun is to take out some distant and otherwise unreachable targets with a sniper rifle. So, in the end you get a supposedly very advanced id tech 5 engine, but, it seems, id has not taken much care to build a game on top of it! Expand

People also need to understand that nowadays almost every PC game has some consolized characteristics. This is inevitable. If you develop a game for all platforms at once, you have to appeal to a mixed audience. You need to make decisions. So keep that in mind.
I've been a long-time dedicated fan of id Software's FPS creations, but I admit I had doubts when they announced this game. I didn't think they would be able to let go of the usual formula to create something different with RAGE. Then I started to play it yesterday, and I just simply got chained to the game for 8 hours straight, and the next day I finished it in another long session. To be honest, I already feel that I'm going to play through it again. This is pretty unusual, because it doesn't happen too often to me.
First of all, the visuals. I was stunned by how game looks - in a good way. I understand that some of the textures are low-res at the moment, but I am fine with that, because what's important in the game is very well detailed. By the way, Carmack just promised a patch on his twitter, that's is going to alleviate this issue. The thing is, if you look at the game as a whole, there is no other FPS right now that has such looks and all these extra post-processing features, while running at a stable frame rate of 60 without any hiccups. So, before you judge RAGE, play through it and you'll know what I'm talking about. And the content is just endless. You'll know why it takes up 22GB on your HDD. It's size is so huge because the art of the game is exceptional. You can clearly see that every character, area and architecture of the camps and towns has been well thought-out and carefully designed, modeled and built by professionals. The atmosphere changes all the time while keeping you constantly entertained. You can find so many types of characters in it, such as wastelanders, mutants, steampunk people, hi-tech freaks, giant monsters, buggies! And so much more. I'm not going to spoil anything, feel free to explore yourself.
Last, but not least... the gameplay. I was so happy that it plays just like Quake did (yes, you can even strafe-jump and bunny hop while sprinting, lolz ;p). The movement, the aiming and the shooting is exactly the same, but it's combined with today's trendy FPS features - such as regenerating health, ADS, grenades and equipments (the Wingstick and the Drone own everything). It also has some signs of RPG, such as inventory, looting, crafting, and NPC interaction. They're similar to Fallout 3, but in a very simplified way. I think there was no harm done by that. It's already a lot of extra, compared to what we are used to in id's games. The bottom line is that all these things combined humiliate every other fast-paced action FPS available right now. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Buggy-game part. Basically RAGE is a 2in1 game. The racer part feels like a separate game integrated into it, although it fits just fine. RAGE wouldn't be itself without it.
My only problem was the difficulty. On the most difficult Nightmare setting the game was no challenge for me. It wasn't a question how I finish it... the only question was: when? Here comes the other problem: it was over kind of suddenly. These are the only reasons I'm giving it a 9, and not a 10. Simply put: play it!

So it's a good game, such a shame to see the backlash id software is getting from the internet communities. Seems like they just had a bunch of bad luck, hope the game still does well for them.

I actually created an account here at metacritic to share my review of this game because i was soo disappointed. ID used to be a legendary company, but this game is a horrible console port, a dated linear and boring game that seems like it's stuck in the past. Don't waste your money on this game, you'll only regret it.

This is a good game and we all know it. The frustration due to textures glitches and graphical issues leaded to a proper stoning, but this game worth the shot. And you definitively can't note it 0. It's nervous, fun, and adrenaline-full. The exteriors are gorgeous and the character design is amazing. Sounds and game sensations are really awesome. It's a **** old-school shooter with diverse addendum on gameplay and it's probably the best FPS I've played in a while.

Huge deception on this game. ~10h of gameplay so far.

    The positive points :
    - Length. It's so bad that a few hours of playing seems ages doing always the same.
    - Weapons. A few weapons are great fun, but it's not like you can use them often.

    The negative points :
    - Graphics. I don't have the very latest hardware available but it's still far above any console. Seriously low resolution textures everywhere when all is maxed out in options... ?
    - Lack of interesting things to do. It's all linear dungeon crawling. And you have to do each level twice, once normal and once in reverse. That's an artifact to cover the lack of content.
The Hub towns are trying to make you forget that you get all missions in a linear fashion. But it's not helping much really...
Racing cars has no interest and is dull, it's even too basic to be interesting in MP.
    - Gameplay. The same dated gameplay as in the old Doom, i.e. you fire all that you have at the opponent. No matter where you fire (head, legs...), a type of enemy has a certain amount of HP and you keep firing until you reduce these to zero, i.e. localisation of the hit will only change an animation, but not make more damage. Forget headshots. The only thing that changes how fast you kill an opponent is the type of ammo/damage that your weapon does.
    - Difficulty. Just based on how much opponent they send at you and how much you conserve ammo.
    - Art Direction / Concept Art. They really need to hire design artists that really can bring some concept art and some interesting scenario. Here it looks like a patchwork of ideas taken here and there, put together without any coherence in between.

In the end the only outstanding mission is the Dead City mission that we've all seen in the gamepkay trailers.
The rest is dull, it has no taste.
I don't even think I want to finish it...

The game play feels really solid. I love all of the interesting weapons and ammo types. Yes, the weapon selection uses a console-ized interface, but like most all PC games I simply used the # keys/mouse scroll, so it didn't really matter. The sounds and voice acting are top notch with good crisp realistic sounds and excellent quality voice acting. The writing and story itself were less than perfect. Lots of details left unanswered and the characters although they are voiced well don't really get involved much so you have no reason to really care much about them. However, that being said I don't play FPS games looking for award winning stories. What RAGE should and does do well is Shoot! Lots of shooting, lots of fun weapons, AI that didn't feel completely retarded like most FPS games. The driving portion handles well even using a KB, although I opted to use a gamepad at times. The mini games also were really enjoyable. I played quite a bit of the card game. Overall this game is severely under-appreciated, but I am glad I waited because I totally enjoyed it. Furthermore there's no support from Id or Bethesda, so you have to read the official forums to get help from other players.

What RAGE brings is, the best shooting experience ever among all FPS games on the market. Through out the game, you will encounter all type of enemies, each ones have their own unique fighting style. Don't think you can hide around the corner or run along the path to make your enemies chasing you around like other sissy shooting games. The mutants will climb, crawl or jump right at your face; the Authorities with organize a squad and tactically attack you; and there are huge monsters will blast the hell out of whatever you are hiding behind. As a result you will find yourself in a tight situation where your eyes have to concentrate on every bullet, you mind has to think about every solution and your mouth has to cry **** **** **** while running like a little rat.

Graphically, the game looks great. RAGE comes with the newest idTech 5, and surely it doesn't disappoint us. The world looks very detailed and the characters are incredibly life-like. In terms of character animation, no game out there is better than RAGE at the moment. The animations are applied for every joint possible, as you can easily see the movement of the character's tongue when saying certain word, the curve of the finger when he press his hand against the table or the movement of the enemies when they are hit on their legs. All animations are extremely unique, like, when someone says "up town", he actually points his finger to the sky, make me wonder could be a real person is talking with me. Everything makes the world of RAGE beautiful and lively. There are some technical issues with RAGE, though, like texture popping or sometimes the game doesn't run at all. Update the game to the newest version as well as update your VGA driver will certainly help.

On the other hand, RAGE is still a FPS game with RPG elements so it may disappoint those fans of RPG shooters like Borderland and Fallout. The open world of RAGE doesn't really help much for exploring or doing side-quests. The Wasteland is rather like a lite version of Twisted Metal where you can drive from place to place and shoot other vehicles. There isn't an option for you to level up your skill and the story is pretty simple and plain, so if you are looking for a RPG shooter, look elsewhere. In a nutshell, RAGE is a game for true FPS hardcore players who are so bored with all "modern" FPS nowadays.

Perhaps because it has the speed and simplicity I missed in fallout 3 and though it is a simple action game, still holds some RPG theme. I don't know. After spending a fair amount of time with configuration files and creating cache folders for RAGE I ended up with a game that runs more smoothly than any other I have had on my PC with a stunning visual style that deserves great praise to be heaped upon the art team at ID.
So, the textures are a bit blurry at times, especially close up. That's to be expected with a cross-platform title like this. It's the sheer amount of detail in every part of the environs and the staggering variety that lifts this game visually head and shoulders above anything seen before. No two areas a the same and I struggled to notice any repeat textures used in most games to cover large areas. The devil is certainly in the details here because the world comes to life on the screen.
This is all helped by some of the best sound quality I have ever heard. 5.1 surround sound is a minimum requirement in my humble opinion if you want to get the best from this game's solid audio. The voice acting is also of a very good quality, but possibly not the best I have heard.
The writing is okay, but nothing mind blowing. It tells a good story without too many frills.
The gameplay mechanics are solid and fun, which, at the end of the day, is what a game should be. The racing is frantic and visually breathtaking with the epic surroundings flying by at breakneck speeds and still making you feel in total control of your vehicle.
The A.I. Isn't the best but there is some variety, no-matter what some people say. The mutants basically run at you but the bandits leap about trying to get in close for a personal kill. Other enemies use the arsenal at their disposal to great effect and draw you out of a hiding spot with a well thrown grenade whilst others may well blow themselves to smithereens with a stupid fumble. Personally I think it's all part of the fun.
Yes, RAGE had some major technical problems on release but they were mainly driver issues and a distinct lack of graphical options, which has now been largely rectified by a patch.
There is so much bitterness on the Internet about the issues and some truly over the top reactions by people who really ought to get some anger management classes that I have to add that if you have patience, update the game (and perhaps use your own configuration files) and forget about this ridiculous "perfect game" expecationitis illness that many people seem to have you will have an absolute blast. It's also a rather sizeable game for a shooter which adds value for money compared to other 5 hour shooter.
RAGE is a solid shooter and fun racer all in one - once you get it running correctly.

It needs to be said that most of the 0 and 1 scores are from people who couldn't get it running properly. AMD, in particular, had some problems getting the correct driver out for this game. Once the issue has been fully resolved then it shouldn't factor into your buying decision.

The opening sequence of the game is one of the most beautiful and moving openings that I have seen in a while. This game really has a lot going for it. It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
