ID failed his project on PC.
They blame drivers that caused such problems as run-time reloading textures, crashes. But i think they should blame themselves.
few words about the game. boring and I've seen already this features in another games. I don't even realise WHY it is 21+ GB?

At first, I couldn't even run the game which I pre-ordered from Steam (never again!). But ATI has released a specific set of drivers for these Rage issues and ... they WORK ! I no longer seem to have any noticeable graphical issues - the pop-ins, shearing, etc., are gone. Here is a link to the ATI Rage page at AMD:

    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx

For those of you who are not running Windows 7 with an ATI card, maybe check to see if nVidia has a fix out for this.

I agree 100% with all those saying this game should not have been released with all these issues - it makes Bethesda and Id look bad and makes me lose confidence and trust. I know now after this that I will NEVER pre-order a PC game again. I will wait until the game is released so I can gauge what the issues are. When it comes to PC games, or maybe even consoles games, patience is indeed a virtue. Don't give in to the pre-order hype andbait ... and don't trust the offical"Critics". Look at the difference here at Metacritic between the Critics score and the User score - Wow! Now about the game itself .... for those of you expecting a Fallout experience, this ths game is NOT Fallout - it doesn't have the great atmosphere and feeling fallout 3 and New Vegas have. It's also quite linear - you can't really explore as much as you can in Fallout. You have to stick to the set pathways. Want to get off the path and climb up that rock face a bit - forget it! But still there are things I like about it. The scenery is interesting and the graphics are clear and detailed, but not revolutionary, once the issues are mostly gone. Graphics are just a bit above those of Fallout. And unlike Fallout, you get to drive a vehicle. The AI Mobs are interesting and pretty tough. The game is always feeding you quests, big and small. This game is like a mix between Fallout, borderlands and Doom, and it can be intense at times. The game has a little circular minimap like the GTA minimap. I wish there was a way to get a larger, more detailed map, like in Fallout. When you have to go somewhere, they trace a path for you on the minimap like in GTA so you know where to go..

To be honest, if I'd have known beforehand what this game was really like, I sure as heck wouldn't have pre-ordered it and would have waited until the price dropped to about $29 or something like that. I pray to God that Behtesda does not drop the ball with Skyrim. I had a lot of issues with Old World Blues DLC that never seemed to get fixed and now the Rage issues - what's wrong Bethesda, are you maybe too overworked and don't have time for testing??? At least I've learned a lesson - I will not pre-order Skyrim - I WILL wait to see the reviews. If the game is too buggy on PC, I'll get it on PS3 instead. I WILL learn to be patient and not be so impulsive in future - saving me money and frustration. Thought I had learned that lesson after my experiences with Civ 5 lol - Gee but I'm so tired of companies releasing betas and treating us customers like guinea pigs - wish they all had the same attitutde Blizzard has - you release a game when it really IS ready. Don't companies test their bloody games anymore? Don't they care about quality control or how we consumers perceive their companies and products? Guess not.

Anyhow, after considering the games graphical issues, and then the fix from ATI, and then after considering how the game makes me feel and its potential, I give it a 5 ... which I am willing to increase or lower at sometime in the future.

Another shameful console port from a major developer, unworthy of PC release. Stay clear of this one. Blurry textures from the 90s, no graphics options to speak of, Press ENTER to start, consolified user interface, and so fort. All the major red flags are here, this is a game for consoles and not for PC.

I really enjoyed this game; slick and fast first person action, this game pulls you along with story and missions to keep you hooked. [Story] A meteor has hit the earth and killed off the humans. You are a survivor thanks to having been dormant in a protected Ark. You emerge from the Ark to find a modern day wild west with The Authority trying to dominate, colonies of survivors, bandits, mutants, cool looking clothes and tattoos ! Comparisons to Borderlands will be inevitable but they are different games - both great. Commerce and construction of in-game items is straight forward, essential and fun - do not miss out - build as many robots as you can and use them when you are outnumbered in the game. This game hits the FPS sweet spot, after 45 hours of game play I really wish there had been more side missions. I am hoping for DLC : )

[Challenges] There is a main story has missions and in each colony there are side missions to accomplish; racing missions to upgrade your car, commando missions to clean out infested mutant tunnels, item missions to build or acquire special items, snipping missions to defend transactions. On normal difficulty I was able to accomplish 90% of the missions the first time through without a reload - I am OK with that; if you are an FPS dog then turn it up a notch! In FPS sections, the game space and environment is big enough with lots of room for flanking, covering, sniping, run and gun; all the usual elements that we have come to love in FPS. Weapons are awesome - especially the Revolver - quite apropos - construct all items and try them all out. Also, the AI is quite good so get your caffeine; I especially enjoyed the AI behaviour depending on damaged limb and physics of the moment - hilarious ! The end story is weak and kind on makes you feel like Halo2 - suddenly it is over....The physics and the control of the fully upgraded dune buggy in one of the bumpier maps made one minigame race very very very hard, it took me 30 races to take first place, compared to 1-4 for all others!

[Audience and Skill level] All skills levels will like this Game Smoothie - a juicy blend of Quake4, Borderlands and Fallout 3 in a beautifully painted landscape tall glass ! Run down to the Steam diner and pick it up now !

[MyPC] i7-2600K 3.4GHz / ASUS Z68 ProGen3 / 8Gig RAM / Radeon 6870 / 1920x1200 / W7 PRO SP1 [Controls] I played with a keyboard and trackball. Keys are easy to remap and show up in the on-screen instructions. Sweet. Controls are tight Tight TIGHT; switching weapons quickly and using the perfect combination as you run and gun is always great fun. This was FPS heaven.
[Graphics] The game world is simply beautiful, but you will need to use a custom configuration file to make this game playable; find it on the Steam Forum by FusedCore {thanks guy}, it will take you ONLY 10 mins. It amazes me that Id released a game crippled by poor video configurations - but this is a solved issue now. The game never hiccuped after the custom config file: I used the Hi-End config. [Sound] I always play with headphones; voice acting is professional, 3D sound is great, SFX bang on, the music is surprisingly serious and ominous - next time lighten up guys ; )

[Replay+AlternativeModes] This game has a bunch of co-op only levels {Legend} and multiplayer; I should probably check these out.

[Children] Adults only, no if ands or buts.

A lot of the texture resolutions are like something from the year 2000 and 'megatextures' were supposed to be 'the big thing' about this game. I reckon it will be the last iD game I will buy, considering how they have handled the PC launch. I can't rate the game for anything other than being broken...I'd love to, but I can't.

By the normal distance you keep from textures as you normaly play, all you see is a razor sharp, very well texturixed game. Gameplay is the generic FPS slyle but is very good. AI is very predictable but that is the same with every game I ever played. I'm not commenting about the storyline on this since I didn't finished the game yet, but I'm liking it so far. But many ppl here are complaining that the they can't run the game and that every this and that are crap including the story... How can they know if the storyline is bad or not if they can't even run the game? I bought it originally for PS3, and the first thing I noticed when emerging from the Ark and looking around the world was that it was beautiful. Unquestionably, a gorgeous looking gameworld, but when I then turned left to exit the gangway, I noticed something Instantly off-putting: The textures of many close-up walls and surfaces were dropping in about a half-second late, which just looked cheap. I played the game through the first mission and returned to the quest-giver (voiced, I beleive, by John Goodman) and noticed even more late texture dropping. After playing the first mission I could tell the game was something special, the physics, the feel of the gun, the enemy AI, all brilliant. But the texture issue was seriously souring my experience. So, I called up gamestation and asked them to put me a 360 copy aside. I went down, traded it in, came back and started afresh. Now the texture problem was barely noticeable. I only noticed it at all cos i was looking for it, but even then, its very rarely an issue. So I started playing through, and as some other reviews point out, the first hour or two are a little slow. This isn't such a bad thing though, since alot of it is tutorial and meant to break you in slowly, revealing some of the games mechanics ang light-RPG elements. When you do get into a scuffle though, the game comes alive with a vengeance. The weapons feel heavy and deadly and they sound and feel superb. You can tell this game was made by the godfathers of the FPS genre. When I got my hands on the 12 gauge shotgun a few missions in, I was in FPS heaven! The enemy AI is brilliantly unpredictable. Enemies will scale and vault scenery as they rush you, they'll retreat in fear as you waste their friends, they'll drop to the floor as bullets whizz over their heads, showing a real sense of self-preservation. They'll flank you from all sides given the opportunity and they never do the same thing twice. And it all looks brilliant. The graphics are easily the best of a game this size, rivalled only by the likes of Killzone 3 and Crysis 2, but in a very open-world environment. The facial animation of the NPCs, while not quite to the standards of LA Noire, are incredibly life-like and convincing. The character models look great, too, just like everything else in the gameworld. There's quite a lot of RPG style looting and purchasing of weapons and upgrades, making gadgets from schematics and such like. The vehicle sections, used for getting around the world between missions and for race events, are actually huge fun and work very well indeed. You can trick-out your vehicles with new turbos, tyres, spike-wheels and projectiles as well as a fresh coat of paint to add a little personality. Sadly, you can't sell your old vehicles when you get a new one, which is an oversight in my opinion. If you die, theres a defibilator which you can choose to shock you back to life via a cool QTE minigame, which will also shock and stun any enemies stood over you. I did find the side quests unimpressive though, revisiting old areas and battling similar enemies seemed rather uninspired. Besides that though, the game rocks. Hard. I find it shocking that anyone could award this game with anything less than a 9, as its looks and gameplay come together brilliantly. Those giving it 1s ands 0s on here seem to have been playing on PC from what I read, but I think they're still being a little harsh, as the gameplay itself is worthy of far more than that, even without the great-looks of the great-looking 360 version. Fallout/Borderlands fans should enjoy this game for the setting, and FPS fans will love the game for the SHOOTING! Almost everything in the game is handled really well. The story is functional, if not amazingly ingrossing, and the environments are all stunning. The gunplay is fiirst rate and the enemy AI devilishly clever. Ignore the naysayer reviewers, they're just trying to be controversial. It's by no means perfect but it is damned good. The minigames and sidequests, along with the story are the games weakest link, but they're not why you'll buy RAGE. You'll come to RAGE for the shooting and you won't leave disapointed. Expand

RAGE is your standard issue FPS game with slight RPG elements to it. And in RAGE, slight means practically non-existent. Your choices don't impact on anything, they're if anything just flavour choices and barely alter the game and its story in any way at all. It's not immersive, it's not compelling, it just has elements that force you to spend time doing menial things like racing, yes racing. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the title of this game is RAGE not RACE. Admittedly the racing plays only a small part in the game, but on the keyboard and mouse the controls are just horrible so I'd rather not even compete at all, but I'm forced to on several occasions. The whole game suffers from a horrible case of Consolitis, and it shows in almost every possible way. After playing for several hours, it became blatantly apparent that I had to ramp up the difficulty setting. Not a lot changed, enemies still got gibbed after one headshot (which isn't hard because they almost certainly stand completely still). Fights almost always only happen in a frontal cone, allowing for barely any movement and just to run and gun. Five hours in and I've never had to turn more than 30 degrees left or right during a mission to shoot enemies. They made the game like this so that the console players wouldn't stress having to flick around left and right. The Z-axis almost doesn't exist either, there are hardly any variations in vertical combat so it means that everything is either directly in front of you or slightly to your left or right. The AI is, for lack of a better word, stupid. They sit behind cover, only to expose their entire upper torso and skull to be easily shot. Technically this game falls short on so many areas, the FoV feels wrong if you modify it at all. From my understanding 80 is the default, so I guess it gets a bit of praise for that considering most console shooters lock you under 65. I play most FPS games on 110, but RAGE... I can't take it above 90 without getting huge graphical issues. The textures load at the edge of screen extremely slowly when spinning around quickly, you can see them rendering as you flick left to right. Again, I'm forced to modify game files outside of the game in order to increase/tweak the graphical settings. Did you simply forget to put these options in the game, ID and Bethesda? Or could you not be bothered? Rage is another example of what gaming has become. We're accepting our games as they are, poor console ports with no features. The only reason I give this game a single point is the fact that ID and Bethesda opted to leave the Developer Console in the game. Expand

It's baffling that a game that has been in development under the aegis of one of PC gaming's most respected developers could be quite so awful to look at, remain quite so unoptimised for modern PC rigs. Say: "There are many bugs, bad performance and graphic on basically any typical hardware configuration, but thats all the fault of hardware variety and driver bugs and not of the game or the engine, so it fine, lets ship it!"

So no reason for a better User Score, yet.

The ending killed it for me. It was clearly supposed to be a 20-25 hour game but it got cut short.

Incredibly anti-climactic. Invisible walls everywhere to the point that it's almost like they don't want you to explore what I thought was supposed to be an open world. The shooting is fantastic, so are the enemies. It's the one thing they did right in the game and did very very well.

The quests were pretty much the same thing different area and you always ended the level where you started so you could hop right into your vehicle and speed off. No memorable moments just a lot of running around with your favorite gun tried to avoid mutants. No real engaging characters/relationships... which is really an expectation these days. I did not enjoy the racing aspect of the game, and being left handed, I had issues mapping some keys which killed some of the joy... The textures are so incredibly blurry, and I mean incredibly blurry, that they look like they belong in literally half life 1. The textures also have great big seams everywhere, including on characters - so besides being able to see perfectly well how everything is made out of polygon edges, you can also see perfectly well how badly glued together the blurry textures are on everything, even the faces of characters. The gameplay is highly linear (like everything else), the AI is stupid, the inventory and the items are meaningless, the story is non-existent... this is not even a tech demo. The entire game, tweaked to the max with patches and all is still not enough to entice anybody anywhere to play beyond the first two missions. This game deserves a 0 because of the above. Expand

For 2 days now I nearly searched the whole internet and noticed, that there are tons of gamers having the same issues like me, and even more people having a lot of other issues, which make the game absolutely unplayable. I tried every workaround I could find on both, Windows and Linux, but nothing helped :/

Personally, I'm not foolish enough to believe that the PC market for games is nearly as standardized and bug-free as consoles because people have vast variances in their hardware and therefore, their drivers as well. People should understand that when a software developer (in this case id) comes out with an entirely new engine, there are bound to be issues at the launch.

As for the game itself here's what was done right:
    1) The voice acting was top notch.
    2) The variety in environments and their unique nature is astounding (literally no two places look alike).
    3) Combat is visceral and engaging. You must employ cover at times and there is no one way to win a battle.
4)The music in the game sets the tone beautifully with each area. Truly wish I could download it somewhere.
    5) The graphics, despite the complaining of others, are to put it lightly, stunning. Environments look extremely realistic. The outdoors comes to life in the wasteland. And all of this, without the most minor skip in processing. (I'm using an Nvidia GTS 360M w/ 1GB... That's right, I'm using a laptop and I have no issues, why others complained so hard is beyond me.)

Things they could have improved on:
    1) Boss fights could have used a little more effort. Now don't get me wrong, they were great and all, but I can only think of two actual, true boss fights in the game (Definition of boss fight: a specialized fight between a unique enemy and the player).
    2) Vehicle driving was fine for the most part, but I have an issue with any game that makes me steer with button presses rather than the more fluid motions of a mouse.

That being said, I believe the issues I had with the game are minor and didn't make the game more difficult or annoying to play, but simply that my preferences for games weren't maxed out in this title. Can't wait for downloadable content.

So many ratings of "0" from people one user review total on this site. So, this is my first review here too, because I feel pretty strongly about this game. I thoroughly enjoyed Rage. However, yes, the graphics were bugged on release. Carmac is quoted as saying that the wrong GPU drivers were available on release day and the whole situation was a "custer****". Sucks to be at the blunt end of that bureaucracy. I fixed mine on release day with a few easy .cfg tweaks but I don't expect everyone to be so patient. On the other hand I had a friend who got it who has a more updated PC that had no issues whatsoever. Since then id has patched the game and AFAIK everything is peachy now.

The game itself is amazing. Can't say how many "omfg this is incredible" moments I had throughout. This is really a work of interactive digital art. The design of the world is insanely cool. It's so fun. If I could say one bad thing about the game itself, the ending was depressing, mostly because the game was over and I wanted to play more. Took me about 14-15 hours and I think I did most of the side-missions. Time for Nightmare mode and co-op I guess!

Pros: Animations and character detail (so cool to shoot someone and watch their frame react realistically). Pace of game is nicely split between car combat and FPS shooting. Crafting is cool, easy and fun (can't say that about any other game). Voice acting is really good. Overall art design is the best I have ever seen. Graphics are just insanely beautiful and lovingly crafted- this is one of the most unique and gorgeous worlds I've ever seen in a game.

Cons: Ending was very disappointing, not just because it meant the game was over but because the final boss didn't feel like a final boss at all to me. There is something of a cliffhanger at the end though. I am eagerly awaiting the chance to gobble up any DLC they release.

I loved Rage through and through and highly recommend giving it a shot. 10/10 for being a beautiful, fun, original, and developer-beloved work of art.

Stopped playing after about 2 hours couldn't take the graphic problems anymore of course that was on day of launch so maybe its better by now? but I doubt it. Sloppy production, should have had a beta of the multiplayer car racing just to test even thing out and make sure it ran smooth but that would be smart and smart is not good business

After some patches that should have already been implemented on release, the game runs fairly well. Even this doesn't make up for Rage's shortcomings that are suppose to make the game/engine a technological marvel described by some. There is no dynamic lighting and barely any physics(this world feels so static I could get an electric shock and die while playing). Games using the Unreal 3 engine have more polished and interesting features than this game. The animations on the enemies are swell and all, but has anyone looked at the animations for the friendly NPCs that hand out quests? Did they forget to animate the entire lower section of the rig? It feels like those old 70s robots you find at Disneyland that just move around the upper part of their body and the rest is stationary to hold them in place. LOOKS REDICULOUS FOR SOMETHING THAT TOOK 7 YEARS TO DEVELOP. The art is awesome, and that is the only reason this game gets a 4 from me. The rest barely holds up to current AAA standards. If this game was sold for 39.99 brand new, I would have a lot more forgiveness, but being released for a full 60 dollar price tag brings shame to id. This game is nothing new and I bet there is no way in hell that this fantastically crappy megatexture technology id developed will be used by anyone in the near future, it has proven to be an utter waste of time unless all you want is pretty screenshots to put in your portfolio. I think that the gunplay is good and statisfying, that the AI fluid(Wich is enhanced by gorgeous animations), and that the racing is... fine.

The gameplay is standard FPS/RPG stuff. You take quests in hub areas, then drive to the quest, shoot enemies in the quest area, and then head back to the hub. Really, don't see this as some big RPG-thing as Fallout or Borderlands: Rage is about fun. And fun is the thing I had.
The only BIG issue I had gameplay&story wise(Besides the fact that the story is kind of lackluster), is the terrible ending. There is no boss whatsoever, you'll just be fighting enemies one second, and be watching the ending cutscene in the other.

There isn't much to say: You may like it, you may not. Long-time ID fans might be a bit dissapointed, but still, the gameplay is quite solid, and I had a blast.
I'd buy it on a sale or when it drops to 20-30 euros/dollars, because due to the technical errors, it may not be worth your 50/60 dollars.

This game seems big for awhile until you realize its all empty space except for the, say 3-5extra locations you can explore. tho the game seems to think its much bigger, it tells you to explore and find things, all you find are enemies and ammunition, so its a moot search. Worst ending to a game ive seen in a long time, incredibly un-satisfying, there isnt even a boss or challenging situation it just ENDS with a few waves of identical mild enemies. many of the quests you do seem pointless, especially in the last area. you complete some preliminary quests, which led me to believe there would be alot more, but then they just stop and you are told to go fight the final battle for reasons not clearly defined.

Overall... Rage is the sad result of the modern game industry. Rushed, unpolished, overblown, unoriginal, and released with no responsibility or respect. Weapon control is terrible, it mostly feels like shooting BB ' at the enemy... The environments are visually stunning, but the extreme level of linearity prevents you from wondering away from "invisible-wall" protected path, overall ruining what "could have been" an exciting experience.
I cant say much about the story, its pretty insignificant. Limited/no character interaction in the story, no build ups, no smell of a plot twist in the air.. No smell of any plot at all tbh.
Let it be known for the record that I have yet to finish the entire game, but at this point, im not sure that I want to...

    Conclusion:

I would wait for Borderlands 2... I hardly think it will fail as bad.
Don't buy Rage unless you are prepared to be patching, fixing and tweaking away all evening, only to be rewarded with a facepalm.
I wouldn't say it's as bad as buying a bag of crap, but at least with the bag you don't have to get crap all over your hands.

The shooter aspect keeps throwing new and interesting weapons and scenarios. Some of the side missions are replays of previous main missions with different changes (like going through backwards with differently placed enemies), and that would normally be tedious, but the graphics are so good that I want to see it again. Each area has it's own design and distinct look: from the desert to the abandoned city to the new tech city. The only thing I dislike about this game is the mutants. The motion and AI is just too good for these guys, so good I'd say it's the hardest part of the game. Get the graphics update and play with it. This caused extremely low resolution textures in some places and in others caused compression artifacts. The game itself offers nothing in terms of dynamic lighting, all the lighting is static, baked into the textures themselves. Have a look at QuakeCon 2007's demonstration of what there characters were going to look like vs. what they delivered in the latest game play vids and you will see a significant reduction in quality. Whats good about the Graphics? Excellent animations and a couple of wow moments when mega texture actually does pay of in terms of terrain detail. Overall though I'm disapointed, in many ways doom 3 and quake 4's graphics were better in some places, and those are 5-6 year old games. Gameplay is arcade shooter style with some racing elements, combined with crafting. Crafting in this game was not really necasary, but it is ok. Enemies were a little annoying as they seem to be so armored all the guns seem weak. I.e. the best 'machine gun' type weapon in the game which has a BFG round as it's alternate fire takes 50 bullets - 50! - to put down a normal humanoid soldier. Other than that the movement and shotgun is very satisfying. Sound in the game was good with the music being really cool in fights. Get it on a half price special if you're gonna get it. Expand

RAGE is trying to do too many things and none of them well really, except for the graphics which are amazing, but the world you play in is dead, and not because of the story dead in that all of the maps are completely static, all of the objects are stuck to the floor, no physics or objects being scattered after an explosion or anything to move around, you can't even jump ontop of objects below your waist. The entire world is off limits so to speak. You can basically move and look at things like a simulation but there's no real reason to explore, you may find a few hidden items like playing cards for the mini game or pieces used to build stuff but they're randomly placed and it's just not fun and that goes in to the map designs as well:

The maps are basically linear and you just go around shooting everythign until you loop back around to the end. There's very little variety in terms of enemy AI and placement, with the exception of the mutants but you can easily just walk over the invisible triggers in an area to make them jump out then run back in to a doorway to murder them all in a nice row, very not fun and annoying really.

The rest of the enemies are not fun either, they take way too many bullets to kill and the mutant characters don't even leave any loot to find, they just absorb bullets and return nothing which forces you to do other things that aren't fun like racing and playing card games or delivering mail to make extra money so you can trudge through the next mission fighting the same types of things in the same way.

To put rage in perspective HL2 came out in 2004 and offered the same type of post appo. world and did it right, the world while dead was completely alive, you broke things to open boxes, you solved puzzles to get around a map, enemies were varied and fun and the game has characters and story you give a **** about. As for the weapons, they're underpowered, all of them minus wing blade are worthless. the shotgun maybe not but it's only good close range and sometimes it doesn't kill the same two enemies with the same shot. Not sure whats the problem. Nothing is really that amazing you can change your ammo types but who cares, and you can hold up to 4 guns.

The game has some RPG elements which translates to wasting your time back tracking and pressing the activate key twice to listen to an NPC babble on until you get to the mission accept screen. It's tedious, especially when dealing with vendors, each time you need to listen to the idiot vendor tell you he buys and sells items, then you need to wait for him to finish talking before you can buy said items every single time you visit a vendor. It's absolutely retarded. The game really isn't all that inspiring, I'm about 1/4 of the way through the game and I could give a flying **** whether or not I ever beat this, I may just watch the endnig on youtube and call it a day. I kinda owe it to my wife to finish this turd because she bought it for me for christmas. Oh well, nice try ID but this could have been a linear shooter and it would have been much better.

What lets it down is awful game play decisions by the developers - from story to shooting its all pretty uninteresting, story, boring missions in rail-like settings with poor A.I., enemies look and sound exactly the same - can't even loot guns - u have to wait till your given them? wtf? Guns on bodies just vaporize? I find it hard to believe that at some point nobody developing this game didn't say "hang on this is a little rough for a 2011 game". Very little RPG elements that I could tell, having put about two hours in, i've no desire to play any more (odd for an Id game). I was expecting a open - sandbox style game, its far from it. Don't buy. Ogle a few videos and kudos to the art team but avoid the game - there is nothing new, interesting or even well executed. Expand

I give it a 1 for some fairly decent looking landscapes, but that's all this game has going for it.

Textures take time to load when you turn around. The plot is so insanely contrived its abysmal. The starting sequence is 'get out of pod, get attacked by previously invisible enemies, guy pulls you on a car after psychically knowing you were there and drives you home, doesn't offer you a drink or a rest.. puts a gun in your hand and says 'go kill' its insane and I think 10 year olds could write a more believable start to this game. After getting cut-scened to progress the plot (I despise cuts-cene defeats with the passion of a thousand suns) I just gave up.. its poorly wrote, buggy, has a counter intuitive UI and leaves you utterly frustrated at every turn.

I think a lot of users are being very harsh towards this game. I am half way through the story (as far as I can tell) and I've found it fairly gripping and enjoyable. It's not heavy though, it doesn't require much thought and in comparison is no where near as epic as Portal 2, but much better than Brink.

The game play is very solid. The mechanics of the game are reliable and consistent.

The game play is very solid. The mechanics of the game are reliable and consistent. The weapons all feel nice and powerful even, however the enemies do just seem to take more and more hits to kill as you move on, as opposed to using more clever attacks. There's a certain fear factor but it's over-ridden when you realise that playing on easy will make you virtually invincible, the other combat that I didn't really like was how mostly it ended up being bit of an ammo drain. The maps are very nice for combat but you can't run over them enough. If you've played Mirror's Edge, Brink or Half-life 2 then you will be disappointed by the lack of physics or the ability to run over cover easily. Jumping is practically useless in Rage but crouching is not. Rage rewards you well for clever combat and stealth attacks which in the end makes it feel a lot more fun. The combination of FPS, RPG and racer does not feel rushed. They flow together very nicely and although it's easy to see where each takes it's dominance (Racing is for improving you car: For travel. RPG is for improving your fighting chance: For survival. FPS is the actual meat of the game) this is actually a nice feature. It allows you to get all sorts of varied experiences. The term 'open world' does not (however) apply to Rage. It is in no way an 'open world' game. If you've played games like Oblivion/Fallout you will be fair disappointed by the limited area you can access. Most of each map is not accessible. I would compare Rage to Bioshock mixed with Half-life 2 as a best next of kin for game play. Mostly linear, with some RPG elements, some mutants, some badass weapons. Graphics is very good. There are some blurry textures but if you compare this to a game released last year then you will see it's a big jump up anyway. It's extremely well optimised; my PC wasn't meant to be able to run it but it still does at +60fps! The best part visually is that each area is extremely detailed and does vary quite a lot. Overall it's highly enjoyable but don't expect it to blow you away. The thing is... most games don't these days, my favourite game is still Portal 2 because it's Story was the best I've ever played... it's going to be hard to compete after that.

It is just Borderlnad clone. Graphics are really good. But IMO Borderland was a great game and this one fails. Unfortunately, this game is linear and boring.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I ran the game on my old Geforce 8800 in hi-res/high detail. I had a Graphic bug on the first day which was most annoying if I got hit by a bullet. But on the second day a patch installed fixing my problem. Ran the game with no problem since. The engineering was cool, but the need for items like the RC car was short lived. Would have made a better game if they were still needed further in the game to get to other areas, Zelda is a good reference for this. Side Quests like Zelda would have also been good in this game. Although you could do some exploring, the game was very linear. I felt the ending was rushed and came to soon, I was hoping for a third Wasteland (The City) were I would run into the Authority more. Hopefully this will come with the Blue Station Expansion. The biggest issue I had with the game was after the credits you didnt get to escape back into the wasteland. I want to play the card game again with all the cards I collected. Plus I became very addicted to Tombstone. Expand

Terrible don't waste your time. This game should cost 10 dollars and no more. No story No goal nothing expect beautiful graphics. Carmack and his team have lost there touch. It seems developers just try to rush there products to meet share holders demands. This is terrible game to release the end is the worst one I have seen in ages.

    Pathetic attempt at entertainment.

stupidly buggy it feels like a straight up port, the game is barely playable as theres a severe graphics problem I get when i play this game causing all sorts of textures from guns and other stupid things to replace the environment they really need to patch this game! from what i have played it feels really linear and i do feel cheated out of my £30

I was enraged with this game at the beginning: buggy graphics, linear plot and gameplay, repetitive levels. But more I played, more I enjoyed it. RAGE has an atmosphere that was always an essential part of id software's games: mesmerizing, captivating.

If you think Borderland's story was dry, 1-dimensional, and left a bad taste in your brain, but you still want the RPG, post-apocalyptic experience, this is it. The guns shoot, and you've got a lot of them, so unless you're in too much love with the two-weapon-realism, this half-life-esque armory you'll be carrying should satisfy any end-of-the-world-survivor. Facial maps of characters is top-quality, and the scenery through which you'll be trudging on missions is pure scenery gorn--the attention to detail by id Software to the decimated city you visit is mind-blowing, and a true reminder of Life After People. On the downside, when it does seem to be sandbox, it's not. And when it's not sandboxish, it's linear as the original The Houe of the Dead. But with the only sandbox game pulling off freedom and atmosphere being STALKER, a little guidance is welcomed for an absorbing experience, and even needed when you're going through areas with so much eye candy the makers of 2012 would be jealous. But above all, it's really fun when you equip rockets to your vehicle and go on rallies. Expand

I bought this game weeks after it came out and I didn't have any of the issues other people had. Actually, the game is quite pretty. I got half way and just started trying desperately to finish it. It's a major rail shooter. You visit every place pretty much twice. I don't know what to say other than buy it on sale. It's worth seeing the amazing visuals - unfortunately, Borderlands will stand head and shoulders above this game, simply because it came first, and was more interesting, story wise. Expand

Just finished the game tonight on PC. Rage has some good qualties that help it, it has a good combat system and interesting guns. It also at times look good (at a distance) and can be fun expecially in the first couple of hours. However Rage is only a AAA game for the first 20 minutes very shortly after that its all downhill. The story is about as non-existent as I have ever seen in a game billed as an open world RPG. There are arcade shooters out there that spent more time working on dialog and story than Rage. Textures at short rage are terrible (I was using NVIDIA not ATI) so much so that is unforgiveable in a "AAA" title. Gameplay is extremly lame for a something billed as an RPG, there are no real choices you make in the game. Every map is a one way path with no choices or even abilities to get lost, ever! The ending is the lamest I have ever seen from a major developer. No boss, no story, not even a real challenge. Just a few enemies that wouldnt be out of place in any of the other maps. Kill them and then poof game over. Expand

Appalling experience, huge disappointment. 2 evenings of trying to get the game working on my laptop. Downloading drivers, game crashing and now I have GL error and can't even start it. Be warned - you will despise yourself if you buy this - the game couldn't have been properly tested as it is just about unplayable on pc.

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
