From the art to the music to the story to the tactical gameplay, and even to how they’re all woven together so artfully, Pyre is an adventure that excels in every area of its design other than limiting its multiplayer to local only.

Pyre teaches you to fight tirelessly for your freedom, but to question the definition of that freedom as well. I like the sports-combat a little more each time I play. And Pyre fetishizes the tools of the writer's trade, but more importantly focuses on the art and dialogue of good storytelling.

Gamers will talk about Pyre for a good while. Vivid visuals pair well with energizing audio, and both complement the subtle, mechanical gameplay; Pyre, a stunning package, provides with aplomb a depth of strategy not found in some AAA titles, and couches the experience in an engrossing narrative. Supergiant Games’ strongest showing to date, Pyre is a must play, a delight that can’t be recommended highly enough.

Pyre is not a game for everyone, and maybe in a way it does not want to be, and yet we feel good to recommend it.

A beautiful, melancholy, emotional sports RPG visual novel thing. [Issue#265, p.51]

I find the illustrations of Pyre to be beautiful and do not need photo-realistic graphics to put me in a setting.

It just never hooked me. I’m not sure why Pyre feels padded while so many other games can use a similar structure and get away with it. Maybe—to add to the litany of reasons I mentioned earlier—maybe it’s the curse of being avant garde. Maybe we’re conditioned to accept the monotony of shooting hordes of faceless enemies, of swinging our sword at the same ten creatures for days on end. Maybe familiarity breeds contempt, but over-familiarity breeds acceptance.

The Art, music and story are among the best I've ever experienced. Especially the music.
I loved the fact that you have opposition, not enemies. You resolve conflict through sports, though that sport does leave the losers in a state many of them would consider damnation (some of them actually like the Downside!).

I don't connect to characters on an emotional level often. Baldur's gate 2 and to an extent Witcher 3 ring out as exceptions. Pyre was incredible in that regard, I even cared about what happened to a few of the opposing teams and had considered purposefully losing to them.

I find that in most RPG of late I can't wait for them to stop talking, they are just not interesting characters because you go through conversation loops that don't feel genuine.
Witcher 3 and Pyre are great exceptions!

This game is so innovative, yet brings out all the things we've come to love from Supergiant Games.

The entry hurdle for players will be the unusual combination of genres. Visual novel and action-oriented fantasy sports game are neither the most popular on their own nor would one think of them to blend easily. For those willing to look behind genre terms and to enjoy the experience however, it turns into an amazing experience.

Those who played Bastion and Transistor will already expect the beautifully stylised graphics, award-worthy soundtrack, and lovely narration. But Pyre comes with a bigger scope than its predecessors, dealing with a much larger cast. Nonetheless, no quality is lost. As unique as the many characters are, they still receive all the detail they deserve.

The visual novel style part of the game is entertaining enough on its own, but most of all perfectly embedded into the whole experience. It combines effortlessly with the lightning fast sports portion of the game called the "rites", which turns out to be immaculately balanced with a great variety of choices and strategies, which comes as a positive surprise for its unique format.

Finally one of the most impressive feats of the game is to seamlessly adapt the story progression whether you win or lose the rites. Together with the increasing number and importance of choices as the game progresses, this allows for a myriad of possibilities, reflected in the pacing and outcome of the game.

Supergiant Games did not rest on the laurels of their first hits. They took a great risk straying this far from the established paths, but the result gives them right in every way.

Supergiant made it again, another great indie game, this time with their most immersive and creative world yet.
This game has genius design when it comes to balancement, making you choose between your stronger characters to ascend but at the same time giving characters stronger skills as they level up, its just brilliant.
This game also provides intricate and well developed backstories to almost every character, making you care more than you should when leveling up characters.
The story has to follow a pattern unfortunately, a part of me really likes the way that they developed that but another part wishes that they spent more time developing character interactions, it really makes you wonder if they spent one more year just developing that department, it would be what Mass Effect 3 ending should have been.
The only flaw is the fact that it doesnt have an online mode, which is kinda understendable for an indie company, but just makes you think that it was something that they could have done, even if all games had to be hosted.

-Character art is great, but the world art is abstract and too simplistic to be immersive.
-Gameplay is very fun and innovative, but higher difficulties become easily frustrating as there are simply too many things to keep in mind to win in a satisfying manner (Complex strategies are counter-productive and hard to pull off!)
-The story is interesting and emotional, but the ending is surprisingly mundane and bittersweet. The story never seems to really climax, which is the biggest issue for me.
-Music is great as it's customary for Supergiant, but there aren't enough songs to carry the game on its musical qualities alone.
7/10 is what i'd give all three games from Supergiant to date. More detailed art, more songs, stronger plot climax and simpler, tighter gameplay is what i'd like to see.

It is some sort of basketball game played by cartoon characters that look like villains in a Samurai Jack episode. The story is presented in a visual novel format that is linear, and again has nothing to do with an RPG. If this is an RPG, so is Ninja Gaiden and Doom. Shame on the developers for misrepresenting this product. Expand
