The game suffers from a major lack of restraint - next time they should focus on a smaller, more varied city with a limited set of better-balanced powers. [Sept 2009, p.70]

The plot is a bit of nonsense and the NPCs' AI is dumber than a bag of hair, but slashing up civilians with the Claw is always amusing. [Aug 2009, p.68]
  3. Although it has everything you'd want from an intense, action-fuelled open-world title, the overall feeling with Prototype is that it tries a little too hard.
  4. We expected much more from this game. It's a bit short with just 12 hours from start to finish, but it has a certain charm. It's fun to play around with abilities and upgrades and the story is entertaining, but the game itself is just slaughter and violence with a lack of variety.

On a theoretical level it achieves a significant design accomplishment in pulling everything together into a cohesive package. As the person holding the controller, though, it stumbles too often on its inability to turn its potential into a consistently fun game.

Prototype's combat and world traversal alone can provide more than a few hours of entertainment, I just can't get over how cheap a lot of the game feels. Whether it's the dated looks, its frustratingly difficult latter portion, or its awkward storytelling, Prototype often feels like a budget title that unfortunately doesn't have a budget price.

A fun sandbox game in small doses, but it's ultimately far too limited to keep you hooked long term. [Issue#22, p.54]
  8. Prototype isn’t the type of game that shines despite of all it’s flaws. No, Prototype is the kind of game that surprises us that it isn’t in a worse shape just because of all it’s shortcomings. A mediocre game that tried so hard to be cool that it got lost in shallowness.

This game is rated much higher than it should be, thanks in part due to the overwhelming number of good reviews that obscure sites gave. EverThis game is rated much higher than it should be, thanks in part due to the overwhelming number of good reviews that obscure sites gave. Ever play one of those games made to go along with a popular movie? I couldn't help but think Spiderman, as the game engine seems identical with mild graphic updates. Yeah you got super transforma-ninja powers but cool fighting moves don't equal a great game. The story is blurry at best, controlling with a keyboard and mouse is annoying, and the gameplay itself just feels like a killfest. If you absolutely love mindless, zombie-killing games then get this...AFTER it goes down in price in a few months. Full Review »

Terrible AI. The streets sidewalks are crowded with people that appear to be clones of 6 originals. They aimlessly walk around like zombies. Don't buy it. Grab it from a friend who made the mistake of buying it. Full Review »

Although its in NY and has similar game mechanics as Spiderman, it make Spiderman look like dirt. Graphics are just detailed enough so it looks good but doesn't destroy frame rate on a 8800gt. I get 45+ fps with like 60+ characters on the screen and the entire city of of NY. with choppers flying around and explosions going off. Full Review »
