  1. An interesting campaign and siege capability give it an edge, and the abilities of the troops and handsome locations pull it up over the average RTS, but it’s more Gibbon than Plutarch. If you’re a strat addict with a penchant for heavy armour, or a classical scholar, then you’ll love it. Others might as well wait for "Rome: Total War."

Ultimately, the developer of "Commandos" has created an amalgam of the two styles, the result of which I will dub a stroke of near-brilliance. But not near enough. [May 2003, p.90]
  3. Worth a look... [but] we would have liked to have seen Pyro stretch the boundary slightly more and gone for some revolutionary new steps, whilst RTS fanatics will bemoan the relatively limited range of different troops under your control.

Praetorians isn't the deepest RTS going, but for fans of the genre and/or the era, it's a no-nonsense, well-presented package.

An innovative game that veterans will find to be a refreshing and challenging change of pace. [July 2003, p.82]
  6. The tactical wargame that remains, however, is simplistic and underdeveloped.
  7. The skirmishes usually don’t last very long, making this an excellent game to play for a quick fix.

Not nearly as exciting as it sounds. [June 2003, p.70]

My friends say this is a significant drawback, but i personally find it a plus as all you need to do is to concentrate on military tactics: you've got decide which unit to recruit, what village to take, which position to capture - a high hill to build catapults or vast woods to hide your units from enemy scout so that your troops can organize an ambush. There are lots of things to be done should you wish to seize victory, and you don't have abundant time to do that. Pressure that is constantly put on you does a marvelous job because you have to make up your mind very quick without hesitation. Trust me, you'll get to know it when you play it. Full Review »

Would like a remake!!! :D. Its definitely the best strategy game of all time, a real classic. You have to put some thought into military tactics in the game, as apposed to some games where you can just hurl troops at the enemy and they will take victory with ease. Will they be hiding troops on that hill? Can I ambush them? I need to get that base quickly otherwise they will! Things like that. 10/10 Faultless. Full Review »
