Planetary Annihilations: TITANS resembles the game PA should have been at release. [Oct 2015]

Better than the original Kickstarter version. It's not perfect, but a step in the right direction and worth playing - due to the lack of competition.

It’s far from the best RTS game on the market, and existing Planetary Annihilation players whose enthusiasm has waned are unlikely to find much here to reignite it.

  1. This is an improved version of the game but, in singleplayer and in 1v1, it retains the same rigidity as the original release.

Be wary.

Simply put, this is an extension of Planetary Annihilation. Unfortunately, it's the extension of things we all asked for in the first place. Other than that, it's for all intents and purposes the same game.

Don't get me wrong, the units are an improvement to the game, but when the original base game was so unfinished, this feels like we're just being resold what we already paid for in the first place, and many share that view. To give people a prime example of this I'll take the orbital gameplay, Titans fleshes out the orbital gameplay to some degree, adding Orbital battleships, and defense turrets, along with new ways to invade a planet. Unfortunately, in the original PA, orbital gameplay was so undernourished we had approximately 3 combat units, so you can see why people may feel like a lot of this should have come as standard, rather than being sold to them once more.

This rings true for the vast majority of changes, the only exception to that being the titular Titans, and while they are fun, do not justify the price tag we are seeing.

TL;DR, I like PA;T, it's got a few flaws, but it's good enough to outshine them, and the expansion really improved on vanilla. If you like RTS's you should definitely give it a go.

Planetary Annihilation Titans is a real-time strategy game where you enormous armies over even bigger planets. Playing on planets brings a ton of strategic depth to the game, now all of a sudden you can carry out an attack on an enemy base from 4 different directions. This, coupled with an excellent aesthetic and some great lighting (especially with the "darker nights" mod) makes for some truly spectacular looking skirmishes. If you thought the battles of Supreme Commander looked cool, wait until you see hundreds of little explosions and lasers light up a planet's far side.

Planetary Annihilation's most novel mechanic though is the ability to have multiple planets per game, essentially meaning that there are multiple maps per game whereas every other RTS has one. This is where most of the micromanaging of PA comes into full effect. Controlling multiple armies over multiple planets can become extremely difficult, and satisfying.

Now while skirmishes are all well and good, and games can definitely be won by them, PA tends to focus more on the many superweapons on offer. The first superweapon is the most simple, a nice nuclear missile. Send one into the base of a troublesome enemy and watch the fireworks, but really, the nuke is a petty bundle of C4 compared to the other apocalypse bringing weapons on offer.
You can strap some engines onto a moon or asteroid and send it hurling into a planet, destroying it entirely, or if you're more of a sci-fi movie fan you can reactivate a planet made entirely out of metal and fire off its incredibly destructive annihilazer. Much like an asteroid, the annihilazer destroys an entire planet, but it has the added benefit of being fired multiple times, essentially making it a total game ender unless you manage to destroy the catalysts. Totally awesome? Definitely. Game-breakingly unbalanced? Well... we'll get to that later.

And I haven't even scratched the surface, you can invade other planets with the Unit Cannon Lock down your opponents orbital capabilities by building some Anchors over their base, the things you can do in this game go on.

Now that's cool and all, but I bet if you already played vanilla PA you're wondering "but what's that there Titans thing all the kids are talking about?"
Well, Titans is an expansion pack to vanilla PA that adds more units, multi-level planets and even some more superweapons!
While the new units are too many for me to explain, I assure you that they're all really cool.

Multi-level planets are just as they sound, unlike in PA where planets were basically just flat, the planets in TITANS now have multiple levels of terrain which adds a lot of extra strategy to the game (not to mention makes planets look even cooler than they used to)

The new superweapons though are where things get interesting, because apart from one they aren't just things that blow other things up, they're actual units! The Titans are a set of experimental units a la Supreme Commander, they include a giant robot that can stomp and create a huge shockwave, destroying most units it touches (though it's very susceptible to air), a hover tank with three extremely powerful long range guns, and more! These Titanas, if used effectively, can quickly turn the tide of battle on your side, not only can they single handedly destroy an entire enemy army, they also have a ton of health and with a supporting army can carve a path directly to the enemy commander. These units are not to be taken lightly, if you scout one out you need to destroy it as quickly as possible.

As far as negatives go, I only really have 3 major problems with the game:

    1) It can be crazy imbalanced. As mentioned above the Annihilazer is almost game breaking in how overpowered it is. There are also some other balance issues, like air being superior over most units, naval being criminally underpowered (it doesn't even have a dedicated Titan) and tiny asteroids instantly destroying huge planets.

    2) The singleplayer is WEAK. If you're a new player and want to practice on AI, don't use galactic war, use AI skirmishes. Galactic was has a multitude of problems that make it unfun for new players.

    3) It needs some crazy hardware to reach its full potential. Multi-planet games are where this game truly shines above the rest, but if your PC isn't up to snuff playing these massive games can become nearly impossible, especially late-game.

Oh god, have I been rambling for that long?Alright, let's finish this up then.
Overall, PA:T is EASILY one of my favourite RTS's of all time, hell it was that without TITANS. It's fun, looks great and is strategically satisfying for both new players and old. I'd definitely recommend picking it up for fans of the genre (especially fans of SupCom and TA
