An incredibly fun game, great story, interesting characters and it screams Baldur's Gate 3 2015.

People can talk about kickstarter games and not enough "studio" to produce a AAA monoliths with every bell and whistle, but as far as having fun... the literal point, games like PoE grab you by the heart and do not let go.

For newcomers to this sort of game... Take it slow, save OFTEN. Relax! You are going to find things you will have to come back to, puzzles that you cannot currently solve, weirdness you will not immediately understand... etc... There is no linear hand holding here. A great thing.

    Enjoy!

This is a fabulous game and shining example of all that is right with Kickstarter.

Finally an RPG that feels like the old classics, with storyling and dialogue that is interesting and well written. The mechanics are close to Baldur's Gate, albeit without all of the fancy-smanshy Dragon Age graphics. If you enjoy classic RPGs like me, and don't require top of the art graphics to enjoy the experience, this is a definite buy.

Overall it is a triumph, a masterpiece, living proof that given the right developer Kickstarter can bring quality new franchises to the audience who loves it most. I'm loving the new classes, complete freedom to specialise your character however you want it and redefinition of the stats. Makes the game so wonderful to play and there's no good or bad builds.

But even if you never played one of those games, you should definitely play Pillars of Eternity as well. Because it does much more than just offering an old formula, it innovates and rethinks an old formula to offer a new modern RPG experience.

Games like this tell you what an incredible experience you can have by investing into amazing writing quality over voiced lines, incredible stories over mainstream movie-like tropes, hand-painted landscapes over flashy 3D and FX, world building and immersion over cheesy entertainment. It's the difference between being amused by something and being fascinated and involved by something. There's nothing wrong in being amused, but you got to try the difference once in a while...

As a side note: those who reviewed and gave 0s to this masterpiece have just left a record of their absolute incompetence at evaluating games. Everyone has obviously a right to an opinion, but dumb and incompetent opinions speak much more of those who express them than about the subject of their evaluations...

Now, after more than 60 hours into the game (within 5 days ant NOT quitting my day job yet...) I can sincerely say: PoE managed to surpass them all.
So, I'm, giving a 10 for the first time, not because I want this game to be rated highly, but because I truly think that this game, and Obsidian for making it this way, deserve it. I can find nothing among it's short list of minor issues that would warrant to take down my score by even 1 point.
The Art is gorgeous, and proof that well-painted. lovingly detailed backgrounds beat High-Res textures and technical gimmicks every time. It's simply fun to explore every single area, just to revel in all the detail.
The writing is a class of it's own, with a major wall of text hitting me like in Planescape:Torment days, a ton of well-rounded and interesting characters far off the beaten cliches, a fantastic world and a story that made me cut hazardously short the third night of sleep in a row...
Nothing is simple, nothing is black-and white, and no one is simply a fantasy troupe repeated the umptieth time. The choice feel like they really have weight, and my character, with abilities, background and reputation, has never mattered so much (except, perhaps, the aforementioned PS:T)
And the RPG system that obsidian came up with is to date, hands down, the best compromise between pen&paper complexity and cRPG ease-of-use mechanics I've encountered. It offers endless choices, tactics and possibilities and makes for interesting, tough but fair battles. With *meaningful* difficulty settings (not just numbers raised on enemies) to boot.
Really, for me, this game is close to perfection and I openly admit - this 46 year old fart has turned into an enthusiastic fanboy. 10. Thank you Obsidian.

The central theme of the game is the timelessness of human nature, and the role of religion in structuring power in society. That is a very impressive topic for a computer game to tackle. It's definitely a cut above the other games that just want to find excuses to get you from one map to the next map to kill more people, and it's definitely a step forward in the history of video game development. The topics touched on in this game include:

    religious fundamentalism
    politicians using scapegoats
    wealth gap and civil unrest
inheritance of wealth and power in a democracy
    organised crime
    drug addiction

That list could easily be describing a very serious book about our world today, but it's not, it's about a video game. Isn't that amazing? There are a lot of foreshadowing for a sequel, so there is more to this story then PoE 1. I expect the next game to be even better!

As a side note: most of the criticism for PoE is about bugs and PoE not being as good as BG. I played 1.05 version of the game and I didn't notice any bugs at all. In fact, PoE is one of the most polished and bug free gaming experiences I have ever had. As for PoE vs BG, I think it's an unfair comparison because there is a 15 year time gap. BG's story was very entertaining, and BG companions had a lot of that 90s charm, but lawfulness/goodness grid alignment and "I am your father" storyline really isn't that good as literature, so get down from that BG pedestal and have some objectivity.

Eventually, the game will send the Magisters, which are the boss of the guards, and they'll tell you how great they are and then you'll fight, if you kill them, you'll get some really good loot and no more guards will come after you even if you commit crimes. It's really awesome when a game accommodates evil players. PoE allows for such actions, because why not? And you'll know it from the start as the game features some really creative choices, writing and dialog. It will introduce its seriousness by killing off most of your party early on. Funny how games nowadays don't have the cajones to do that. With over 40 hours of fun, I've experimented with builds and even respeced my characters. I love that the game allows this. I like the dark themes and the Stronghold. But the best part I find, is that ALL ITEMS DO NOT HAVE STAT OR LEVEL REQUIREMENTS. This means you can wear the best items in the game right from the start if you know where to find them. This is truly brilliant and makes me wonder why and how so many games missed this important and very immersive attribute of RPG games. The story is also deep and great and complex from a lore perspective. Levelling up is a slow process but meaningful. And if like me, you intend to play Path of the Damned difficulty, you better learn how to min/max stats or your are finished. Real-time with pause gameplay means you have to this fast and have a strategy for enemies. Party formation is critical to your survival and you act like an idiot in PoTD difficulty, you will be dead in seconds. Pillars of Eternity is hardcore CRPG at its finest. But like all great games, it has issues. Some of them include certain types of weapons not having or having very few legendaries while some others have several. The Stronghold doesn't give you too much control over events, such as when bandits attack you even when your party is at the stronghold, they just do damage while you are sleeping and you can't stop them with your party. This isn't a game for people with short attention spans. Despite these issues, PoE is a true winner and the successor of the long lost art of CRPGs. Expand

Some side quest are bigger than main quest in other today's RPGs. Even so trivial quest like bringing a lost book to a priest will throw at you originality. Not gonna spoil it for you :)

The world is rich without becoming stultifying. The lore is built through the descriptions, dialogue, books and even the design of the world itself. As you progress through the game you will feel like you are exploring a real place and interacting with real people. The themes are deep and consistent throughout the game and can cause genuine moments of reflection in the aware gamer.
Gameplay works very well, it can feel difficult at first but by paying attention to your stats and abilities you will quickly become efficient at combat and feel a real satisfaction at planning and executing a battle plan against a tough group of enemies. Leveling is rewarding, there is no such thing as grinding, and many of the old school design flaws, like buffing yourself before battle, are gone from this game. You do not have to save scum either, as it is possible to disengage and retreat if a battle is going poorly.
The art is great, the design amazing, and the soundtrack easy to listen to. This game is something special and something I would not have expected to see the light of day even two years ago. An expansion is already confirmed and all of us should hope for many more stories and adventure to come from the world of Eora where PoE takes place.

Obsidian has brought role-playing games back to when they were at their best with Pillars of Eternity. More akin to Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate than present day role-playing games, Pillars of Eternity is easily the highest quality RPG of its kind that I've played in years. This is a GREAT game. It is like old IE games but with new mechanics, and they are high quality. Engagement is the bigger change I have seen and I really like it, it feels so RPG.

Game is great. I totally received a game I was hoping I would get. Game is trully a modern BG2. Music, UI, dialogs, options, game flow, active pause, all bring this nostalgic feeling of playing yet another fantastic great game from Black Isle Studios .... take that back - Obsidian. Some mechanics are a bit controversial but all in all it just a matter of taste how you aproach them f.e. rest mechanic, combat, AI abuse. Overall you recieve a wonderful game well worth it`s price. To be completely honest I regret now I didn`t back the game when it was on Kickstarter.

It`s a fine game and compared to most recent moderns RPGs the game has a real world, a real story. Overall game is a 9/10 but compared to recent BioWare games it`s a damn 10/10 and I`ll go with that score in my review.

I decide what a nasty friend was that and that he needs some manners taught into him. So I go to the town and find his friend. However, it turns out that this friend did this because that guy was a cruel dick and was constantly beating his wife.
Another example: I come to a mill and find that local miller is being harrassed by thugs. Like a good hero, I promise the miller to stop those thugs. I go to the local tavern where thugs are currently reside. But it turns out that those thugs are farmers, and that miller is a douche and a bourgeois scum who buys their wheat at lowest possible price and sells bread at the highest. However, the miller retorts that he sets honest prices, and even gives the bread away for free to those who really needs it.
And so on and so forth. This is how it SUPPOSED to be in RPGs. I'm so sick of quests like "go bring 50 elfroots" in Dragon Ages, Skyrims and similar games.

The story is good, especially there are a lot of details to discover, for example the story of the world.

No more of this "bad or good" nonsense, with dialogue being the exact same. Obsidian went through great lengths to bring us a true role playing experience, I honestly feel like I am sitting at a table playing dnd with my friends, only it is an interactive video game.
The only issues so far is that it is slightly buggy (one instance where my mouse just stopped working so I had to reboot game).

I'm very glad games like this can still be made today, IE games are among my favourite games of all-time, so I had extremely high hopes for this title and I'm so happy to say my expectations were fully satisfied. Obsidian did not disappoint. It's almost on the level of IE legends and in some areas it goes even further. All the worries about Unity engine and problems I had with Wasteland 2 such as ugly visuals, clunky UI and bugs are a non-issue here, just the opposite, PoE is visually absolutely beautiful and UI is smooth and perfectly functional. There were some glitches at release, but I was smart to wait a few weeks for first patches to come out and I'm glad I did, because as a result I didn't encounter any serious bugs and I could enjoy the game 100%.

The locations and environments are so gorgeous, you just want to live in this world and explore every inch of it. Right form the character creation, this is a gaming dream, all the different classes to play, talents and spells to choose from, engaging quests to do with tons of difficult choices to make, all the interesting characters and companions you meet on your travels. The sheer amount of content here is just mind-blowing. Tons of amazing loot, lots of unique weapons with their own background stories, extensive bestiary full of various monsters to fight in the tactical combat system that you can pause and micromanage to your leisure, but you're not force to waste your time in turn-base system, so if you're powerful enough, you can just roll and decimate. Welcome addition in the form of little playable book stories with hand drawn visuals and descriptions that you can interact with depending on your stats or available items. For a new world, there is also an impressive lore, histories, stories and all the gods you can read about in books. Stronghold you can claim and take care of and upgrade with majestic mega dungeon under it, which will satisfy every dungeon crawler's wildest dream or even a cute pet system, I could go on, I just love this game so much and I enjoyed every minute of my adventure, and oh boy, there were plenty of minutes to enjoy, my first playthrough took 120+ hours!!!

Yes, nothing is perfect and there are few shortcomings such as so-so main story that doesn't really grab you and lacks the sense of urgency that you have to keep going. Level cap that I reached in Act2 about halfway through the game is extra annoying, making the second part of the game useless in terms of progress as exp rewards are way too high and the balance is totally off when you can reach the max limit so soon even with 6 member party. Companion AI is basically non-existent and pathfinding is abysmal. Music is pretty bland and forgettable, not reaching the quality of IE legends in the slightest. Voice acting, while good when present, is very sparse and it can be distracting when one line of dialog is voice acted and the next one isn't. And the lack of co-op multiplayer which was always one of the highlights in IE games for me is also disappointing. But none of this really ruins your overall experience and hopefully all these problems will be addressed in potential sequels.

Pillars of Eternity might not be ranked high up there among the all-time legends, but it's definitely one of the best games I have played in recent years. A shining gem in the current gaming scene and one of the best cRPG's overall. Thanks to Obsidian for creating this and let's hope for more and even better in the future. 10/10

Regarding a lot of the negative reviews based on the games graphics, its incredibly ignorant to downvote this game based on its engine when it promised from day one of the kickstarter that it would be a 2D game going back to the Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale style engine. When other developers release old looking, even 8 bit games like Terraria, Minecraft, Super Meat Bow, Binding of Issac etc etc, the gaming industry and players rave about such graphics being retro and great, yet a game like this that still looks better than a purely flat 8 bit game gets idiots whining that it looks outdated and old.

I love the setting, a mix of renaissance, colonial, medieval era, in which human souls are the center of the plot. I love too the music, companions, the beautiful areas to explore.

The plot is well written and original. I liked the ending too.

Combat, one of the main features of the game, is great but the only problem is that the game is not well balanced. Playing on hard mode, I only found 4-5 difficult battles in all the game. The rest was too easy. I reccomend to avoid playing Pillars of Eternity on Normal or Easy mode.

Already 100 hours in, simply a masterpiece. The only RPG in a long time whose limiting factor is the player's intelligence and ability to micro-manage. POTD difficulty is a god-send and makes the re-playability amazing.

The game is a spiritual successor of Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/Planescape: Torment but it also improves most of the aspects, like graphic, sound, the combat system and the character customization. The main difference between those games and PoE is the fact that PoE is not a D&D game and doesn't use any of the D&D settings. I was a bit worried about this because D&D 2nd edition is very rich and recreating something even similar requires a lot of time, but the PoE team surprised me: the game mechanics are good, sometime even better than old games. The strategy is dominant in every battle and the game is challenging even at lower difficulties. The non-linear progress of the game can be a pain for people used to games with linear progression, but the result is a realistic world in which you must be careful and wise.

Graphics and sound are amazing. In particular I find the soundtrack inspired and well placed.

If I have to find a problem in the game, probably I would point out that the story is not completely original; sometimes it resemble a certain game about past lives...but honestly that could be considered a feature of the game, considering that the other game is another masterpiece.

I recommend this game but not to everybody: the game is challenging, story-driven and sometimes slow, e.g. when reading dialogs. You have to like this kind of games to love this game.

The combat system is much more intuitive than the old silly 2nd edition rules that those older games used. They slimmed down and trimmed the fat off the skill system. Added many cool feats and abilities, some you can use every fight (encounter) and some every day (rest). This is nice as some spellcasters don't necessarily become useless the second they run out of spells. Everything is so similar to D&D, yet tweaked and renamed to make it something original. Deflection instead of Armor Class. Accuracy instead of Attack, etc. There are some cool new classes like Chanter and Cipher that play different than any other class you've seen. Then there are genius additions to the game like you can create your own hirelings for your party if you aren't satisfied with the companion characters. And building your own stronghold is fun. I've been playing on average difficulty and while few of the fights are too easy, the boss fight are just the right perfect challenge.. you have to use a full party's potential to win,as it should be. I could ramble on forever about all the cool changes to the old formula and I literally have nothing negative to say about this game 40hrs in. Perfect. 10/10 Expand

This game has. The writing has been brilliant, and coming from someone who enjoys reading a lot, that's pretty cool. The whole soul reading aspect of the game was a surprise to me and being able to read about a bunch of the inhabitants of the world helped bring life to it (I'm still bitter about how lifeless the majority of Dragon Age Inquisition felt). And the companions are a pretty fun unique bunch to go on this journey with. Previously I had never really gone too hardcore when it came to combat in games, but in this game it's sort of required that you be at least a little strategic and it's actually making the game more fun (I restarted my first play through because I felt my character was not optimal). I've never played the old infinity engine games, but after I beat this game a few times I'm definitely going to check them out. To my video gaming brethren, if you enjoy RPG's and/or games with great storytelling and/or games with fun strategic combat, please check this game out. Expand

only cons i found are rather small maps (but at least they dont feel empty), some side quests using the areas youve been to (eg. you clear the cave full of ogres, then you get a quest to clear it from cultics who are supposed to be there for years already,, feels dumb), leveling cap that can be rather easily met in the mid/late game and battle music which ends exactly when battle ends (instead of some fading), but all of these are really nothing compared to this future classic isometric crpg.

Arcanum still remains the best RPG for me but I'm happy to see new lore. The graphics in this game is amazing! I don't understand people that says it's mediocre because I understand how much work the put in and it shows : every weapon is made with detail and care, the background , 3D models and lightning looks amazing. Another great thing it's the option to increase the size of the text : I played it at 130% because it has a lot of text and it's really great to not have to stare at the monitor or TV in order to read it with ease. Recently found out that we have no low INT dialogue. I miss that.. Expand

I will update this when I finish it, but for now I can't think of a better tribute to all the great classics we loved, while improving almost every aspect of these games.

Pillars of Eternity stands on its own merits without resorting to nostalgia too much. Truly a CRPG masterpiece, the game offers old school, real-time strategic combat, and a vivid world to explore. Not only do you get an overall well-made experience, but also a challenge you haven't seen since the 90's.
