I started the Persona series with 5, and once Golden came out on Steam I figured I'd try it out. 30 hours in and I'm not disappointed. I enjoy the shuffle timeI started the Persona series with 5, and once Golden came out on Steam I figured I'd try it out. 30 hours in and I'm not disappointed. Each of the three dungeons I've been to so far have been challenging and, but oh so satisfying once I beat them. Grinding is a little repetitive but you can get into a rhythm with it and knowing a Shadow's weakness helps out a lot. I enjoy the shuffle time feature, I like having the chance to decide what I need most at that moment, is there a rare Persona with awesome stats that'd help me out perfectly for the next boss? Or am I short on cash and need a bit of a boost? There's always a useful card to be found which makes beating Shadows fun and rewarding. Sometimes you'll encounter a Shadow that'll kill you and your party in one hit, which isn't the nicest way to find out you need to raise your level a bit. The fact you have to restart from the beginning of the current floor every time you die makes dying feel frustrating, but it can also strengthen your resolve to survive and retain any cash, loot or experience you've gained on that floor already.

I really enjoy the cast of characters in this game, the Investigation Team; each member is charming and unique in their own way. Everyone gets their own moments in the spotlight, and seeing everyone face their darkest side of their personality at the end of their respective dungeons is a nice way to show the player who this character truly is, and it's satisfying seeing them come to their own conclusions on how they need to accept this side of themselves. I found Kanji's observations on the concept of manliness to be incredibly touching and mature, even if his Shadowy self's portrayal as a camp, lewd, gay man might now be seen as offensive to some. Yosuke's creepiness/pervy-ness is also annoying at times, and the scene in the tent with Kanji is quite cringe-worthy, but he redeems himself with some mature, genuine moments of connection with other characters. Though some attitudes may be outdated, and some of the humour may not have carried over well from Japan, the game is 12 years old, which makes it somewhat forgivable.

The daily grind of going to school, working a part time job, raising a social stat if you need a certain level of courage or understanding to talk to someone and sleeping, at which point the dynamic, frantic feeling of needing to solve a murder mystery can disappear, but raising a social link is always fun, with funny, heart-warming/breaking scenes coming from it. With every level of social link raised, I always feel closer to the characters, which helps make them feel real, making me work to earn their friendship (and helpful bonuses during combat).

In conclusion, this game is great, the characters are fun, the music is sublime, apart from questionable, outdated humour at times, and some repetitiveness, this is a thoroughly enjoyable game, and if you've never played the original I'd highly suggest you pick it up!

(Oh, and by the way, Chie is best girl)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is great. The story is very intriguing at the beginning, most of the characters are pretty likable and for the most part the game still holds up a decade later when the original came out years ago. But, there are some things that reeeeaaally don't hold up anymore with specific characters such as Teddie. He is ok at the beginning but quickly becomes the creepiest character and really takes away from the story because it's so random and completely unnecessary. Another character is Marie, who is basically the purpose of Golden adding extra content and a whole new dungeon and character to experience from the original one and she is SUPER UNINTERESTING. And you have to max her confidant to unlock January, otherwise it's just like the original. Every time I spent time to increase her social rank, I felt like I was grinding a story I didn't care about and I was skipping all of her dialogue because it's so dated and just tedious to sit through. She also has these poems that really don't amount to anything in my opinion. Yosuke is another character that's kinda unlikable but he has redeeming qualities sorta. After that it comes down to voice acting and the voice actor for Chie is so ridiculously cartoony it doesn't fit with anyone else in the game and it makes her very unlikable even though she's an interesting character for the most part, but in the end it's held up by the voice acting for her character. That's pretty much it for the characters, now the story. The story is consistently good to a point and that's in December. You have a big showdown and it's really crazy and lives are on the line and I was on the edge my seat for this. But after, you have a certain string of dialogue come up and you have to answer like 8 questions in this exact correct order, otherwise you don't get the TRUE ending of the game. It's almost a double edged sword where on one hand, I find that really unique and cool that you have to figure it out but on the other hand, it makes no sense for them to expect you to get that correct without looking it up. I didn't know that until I accidentally beat the game within 40 hours of a 60 hour game and it just ends with like no resolve and is pretty confusing. So I had to go back, look up the correct answers and I got to the true ending. But that took me another try because at the end when you say bye to LITERALLY EVERY CONFIDANT IN THE GAME, it somehow expects you to go back to Junes and randomly find out that you didn't actually kill the final boss and you'll have to do ANOTHER dungeon and fight ANOTHER FINAL BOSS. It's kind of ridiculous by the end on how much is just padding to a point and is kind of frustrating. But with all of those complaints, I still loved the game. The characters that are great really hold the game up such as Yukiko, Rise, Kanji, Naoto, Naoke, Ai, Daisuke and Kou. All of them really make this game special and super fun. Now to be fair I did play Persona 5: Royal and that was my introduction to Atlus games and I immediately got this to fill the scramble sized hole in my heart. And I think that's why I'm so "harsh" on this game because P5: Royal is so much better at literally everything but if it wasn't for the mistakes in this one then 5 wouldn't be so good I think. But overall, I still highly recommend this game to almost anyone honestly. Expand

one super long palace but few with more interesting layout. Characters are also more fell like real persons (its not a pun) . If I would choose between P3 team and P4 team P4 team win 's. And even if controls on keyboard aren't best game in itself is still great.

This game is very much worth the money, amazing story, gameplay, etc. The only complaint would be the voice acting for a few characters, they're either too exaggerated, or too unenthusiastic. Other than that this game is a solid 8/10.

P4G is a very good jRPG with top-class characters. That game has the best team spirit in every persona's games. The story is quite interesting and on a good level, but not that good as the story in P5R. In my opinion, that game is much better than Persona 3 Fes in every aspect, but not good enough to compare with Persona 5 Royal.

This is a game whose characters, whose school trips, whose hijinks, whose music will make you feel joy despite the relatively serious subject matter that it centers the main plot around and I wouldn't have it any other way for this title. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that the combat & dungeon crawling is dreadful in this title, I had to play another SMT game just to have a refresher of what good combat is like. Pro-tip, play it on high money generation, low experience gen, and then deal high damage as a player so you can spend as little time as possible in dungeons and get everything you need. Expand

But at the end of the day, this is still an extremely compelling video game experience that has so many interesting ideas, so many balls-to-the-wall ridiculous or unexpected moments, and enough charm that I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the game. It's definitely too long (just like Persona 5) but I imagine that's probably due in large part to the extra Golden content. I'm not really sure what to make of this game - I feel like if I try to think about this like a video game critic I would give this a 4/10 but if I tried to rate its entertainment value and how much I enjoyed the experience of playing it, I'd easily give it a 9/10. For such a long game it would need a very trilling gameplay to never bore the player unfortunatly that is true only for the first 10h or little more of the game, after than a endless uninteresting fase of vn slice of life start (there was even at the beggining but the more you get of it the more it gets annoying), there are just to many social links which takes forever to complete and only 2 or 3 are interesting, and they follow the same structure more or the same with a lot of cheese dialogue, the game also give you the illusion of choice since 80% of times your dialogue choice wont even change the way you get answered to. But this game as another gameplay half other than the vn part which is the real rpg and let me tell you it would be really good if every dungeons wouldnt be just a reskin of the previous one, but they are. There is NOTHING in dungeon except chests and enemies (which you can easily avoid all the times and which looks all the same), just some flat hallways. Even if I like the card sistem at the end of each battle I don't understand why use it for chating personas, they chose to not make the enemies the persona you are gonna catch unlike other Persona games.
Yet I have to admit the combat is one of the best I ever played in a turn based game, it's so satisfing to hit an enemy weakness or to smash them when they are down, it was the element of the game with conviced me of not quitting the game.
After the first 3 bosses (or 4, depend watch you count) dungeons and bosses became so easy it's actualy impossible to die, you have so many ways to regain HP, SP and to withstand death hits that you really are gonna have to try hard to die (I played in hard difficulty), and that is a shame because the only reason why the first 3 bosses are hard is because you don't have many abilities yet which is of course less fun, so right when it start to get really fun with all the abilities the is no more challenge.
The plot is an investigatio which turn to something else toward the end, it's good and intriguing but I think for such a plot there was not need for so many hours and in the first finale fase (the one you initialy think is the finale) it became so uninteresting that I was close to quit the game, but for the true ending it reconnect everything and it all makes sense, so all considered.
The soundtrack did impress me, I found the same 3 ost way to abuse in ever VN part, the best ost is the battle one but is always the same and you will get bored of it in more than 100h, but I have to praise the ost of the end boss, so many and so exiciting.
Going about the true ending, I can only say it's great, the ost are amazing, the boss looks intimidating and the aftermath is very sweet, I think the ending save the game.
I know it's a old game and I know I use expect modern standards to value it but I can only give a vote to the enjoyment I got and it wasnt much.
Only play it if you really like slice of life visual novels because that is what you are gonna get for half of the game, the rest is between good and great if we exclude the dungeons.

This game is so damn charming, but it takes forever to get started. With a little more player choice and agency, they could really make it into something incredible. The intro is great until you realize that your only halfway through it and there's 2 hours of cutscenes left before you can actually play the game. Still has one of my favorite worlds and Soundtracks.

It is a bare bones, utterly helpless stripping of few demons and designs away from the source to fuel into a generic turn based combat, with only few interesting tidbits for company. If you come for Dungeon Crawling you are better off with the main Tensei game or practically any other title in the genre. The writing part of this game is also severally overrated in my opinion. Bare touch upon some social issues, boring villain and motivation and your team made out of nothing but teenage stereotypes. The addition of "dating sim" part feels like lackluster attempt to generate any interest in these walking stereotypes. The treatment of LGBT characters. namely Naoto and Kanji is simply abbhorent, hell, even for its time. This is to say nothing of the mass of misogyny thrown at main female characters and the constant sexualization of Yukiko by men older than her. On the topic there is simply the continuing efforts of older women to initiate romance with the high schooler MC. You may call it a sign of times, well, for one, there is plenty of games that treated these topics with more nuance even on the console, and two, contemporary player has far more opinions for better gameplay without these issues. And for what? For what does one suffer through these teenagers accusing their suspected gay friend of being an actual predator? Once again for the mediocre dungeon crawler? Cookie Cutter crafting with simple advancing gear with few choices to spice it up? Insufferable boss fights (with Golden outright removing type advantages in some cases just to make it more unfun) ? I understand and do not blame these chasing nostalgia, as I have a lot of guilty pleasures but I do not feel this title serves newcomer with any gameplay worthy of consideration and with its genuine contempt for its LGBT and female character I would recommend outright skipping out on it. Dialogue, superb, the best of any game i have ever played.

There are some people who may not like the game, mainly those who have a hard time connecting with story. But really, if you enjoy JRPGs this is the absolute pinnacle of the genre. I am rating it 10/10, and it TRULY deserves this rating. I am not a fanboy, these are facts

It so good... and even though the 3d graphics are lame, the 2d drawing are really good, and the relationships with other npcs are truly great.
to bad it had to end...

One of the most overrated games in existence.

Ill give Persona 4 credit when it comes to presentation because visually it really stands out, if nothing else its a good example of how an interesting visual style can elevate an rpg beyond the basic grind addiction of increasing numbers until you can win. The battle system in particular isn't very interesting, enemies have weaknesses

Ill give Persona 4 credit when it comes to presentation because visually it really stands out, if nothing else its a good example of how an interesting visual style can elevate an rpg beyond the basic grind addiction of increasing numbers until you can win.

The battle system in particular isn't very interesting, enemies have weaknesses but it never makes any sense because there isn't any visual cues to what enemy is weak to what so you just randomly try different abilities until something eventually works which is trial and error at best. What makes this worse is that enemy designs are repeated in later levels with different weaknesses so there is no consistency, eventually they just give you a character that flat out tells you what the enemy is weak to removing all thought from the process.

The stuff you do outside of the dungeon crawling is incredibly dull and shows just how bad the pacing is in general. There are actual hours of gameplay time that youll spend just talking to people, Persona 3 did this too but at least they let you choose when to go into the main dungeon whenever you wanted, you had to choose when was a good time to grind so the game let YOU dictate the pace in stead of just railroading you like 4 does. Stuff like this isnt interesting, its sleep inducing.

For as much people crow about how the game lets you be a detective the way the game goes about it is mind numbing. Before some dungeons the game forces you to talk to random npc's until you can enter and whats stupid is that there is no logical way to go about it, you just talk to literally everyone until something happens.

The characters themselves aren't as interesting as fans make them out to be. The only characters that were thought provoking were Naoto and Kanji which to be fair are well written and have great voice actors behind them. The rest felt under developed, Yusuke is bored of country life, chie is jealous of yukiko, yukiko doesn't want to work at an inn her whole life, teddy is a twink in a furry suit. Its pretty easy to see which characters got the snub in terms of development. Also anyone who likes this game was a loser who didnt have friends and used this as a substitute.

Honestly. This is a betrayal. Atlus tricked me into buying a Vita just to play P4G. Now I see it's easy to access on PC? This is messed up. And the Graphics look way too shiny. The original P4 offered better usage of Fog Graphics that gave the game atmosphere. P4G doesn't know what atmosphere is! The Final boss has no character development

It’s a strong showing that is genuinely fun to return to, even if I think certain characters’ stories deserved better representation and development. I’m glad a whole new audience will get to visit Inaba.

Persona 4 Golden was largely considered one of the PlayStation Vita’s must-play titles and for good reason. Inaba’s small-town feel, the fantastic cast, incredibly personable dialogue, excellent audio, and strong gameplay combine to make the game a superb all-around experience. Though there are no distinct advantages of playing this version over the Vita one, its release on PC should be rightfully celebrated for giving a whole new set of RPGamers the chance to play a game that resonates just as strongly now as it first did.
