One of the best strategy titles of the year…an out-and-out classic. [Feb 2002, p.65]
  2. This game is truly a remarkable trade sim, and the number options available to you through the course of this game is staggering. While the game is not without it's problems, they are easy to overlook in light of the many strong points of the game.

The downside to this aspect of the game is that (as mentioned) it can be downright frustrating to get to the point where you are actually even a minor 'player' on this regional stage.
  4. The uninitiated will find the game monstrously intimidating, and it takes a bit of playing before you really start to engage. In order to get the most out of it, you need to sit down, learn its ins and outs, and suffer a lot of early setbacks while you get familiar with the game's complex mechanics.
  5. The game offers an incredibly rich experience with vast amounts of replayability.

Patrician II continually requires your utmost attention and energy. However, if you are able to endure the lulls, you will most likely find Patrician to be quite a rewarding experience.
  7. Patrician II successfully blends trading, city-building, and simple ship combat in a way that's constantly engaging.

It has a depth few games of this genre can match. Fewer still can equal the level of micromanagement. [Feb 2002, p.92]
  9. Relatively unique in the fact that it makes clear use of the Hanseatic League and has many references to the history of that large organization, this title still fails to present worthwhile gameplay, leaving the character to shuttle supplies from town to town, without much reward or entertainment value.
  10. The main problem with Patrician 2, however, is the lack of delegation.
  11. If you are the obsessive type who likes to control every little happening, the trade of every historically-accurate bushel of grain, then Patrician II will supply a lengthy, stream of satisfaction.
  12. 50
There really is just too much here to form one coherent game.

I only have to criticize the difficulty level, because the game is really complex and has a tough learning curve. Not a game for a fast session, it demands a lot of time. I recommend the Gold Edition! Full Review »
