I can't wait for the day when developpers will finally understand that they are terrible at story writing, they're not writers, and they should stick to what they're good at.
If I want a good story, I read a book or I watch a movie.
If you don't care about what's happening in the first two minutes, might as well switch it off and uninstal. Because it doesn't get any better.
Overrated and hugely boring game people say they enjoyed to pass off as sosphisticated.

There aren't *many* sequences that require precise execution, but you can often die or be set back permanently by a single wrong move. Controls are more unresponsive and annoying in some sections than in others. It's also pretty easy to miss something in the environment, or worse yet, in the UI (which is rather underexplained), and be stuck for a long time later. And among sequences that do require precision, the last one is especially offensive. It basically forces you to wait for nearly ten minutes doing literally nothing (with no option to speed it up), and then precisely execute a certain action. Mistime it a little - you you have to repeat it. And that's just 30% of that sequence, as it follows up with another section where a tiny mistake will reset everything. Moreover, that action you start the sequence with has a precondition that is so illogical and arbitrary that it threw everything good the game had out of the window. Its only justification could be "this is the final puzzle, so it must be annoying and hard". I don't think it's possible to figure it out without a guide, unless you are very lucky and decide to try it randomly or out of desperation, and it just happens to work the first time. I was so pissed off that i didn't even bother doing myself it and just just watched a youtube walkthrough. Which I'm actually glad I did, since it kept dragging on completely meaninglessly even after the final-final puzzle. So overall at its best moments the game felt like an 8 or maybe even a 9, but the frustration kept piling up, culminating in an atrociously bad ending section, leaving with a distinctly negative final impression. The writing style really takes you out of the experience, as various texts and lore you come across in the game feel like they were written for an 11th grade writers craft class. Dialogue is clunky and extremely unnatural, and the three or four songs that make up the soundtrack, while good when you first start the game become incredibly grating very quickly. The whole project reeks of an over-ambitious small indie team biting off way more than they can chew, putting it more in the "no man's sky" school of indie games, rather than the likes of "Firewatch" or "What Remains of Edith Finch" The game has a number of unique ideas, but no focus. In pursuing all of these ideas at once, each of them become mediocre at best. (I mean really, one can only be randomly flung from a planets surface or have the world suddenly move beneath you when you jump so many times before you start to wonder if this is all really worth it) Expand

There are several issues in the game but the one that killed it for me is the awful fish-eye perspective.

The graphics in OW can be impressive such as when on the Giant's Deep, but overall are very simplistic and childish. This is not a problem in itself but it does make for a very one-dimensional feel for a game that touts itself as thinking outside the box.

The gameplay of OW is downright awful for me. First off, we have the time loop mechanic. Thank God it doesn't take long to discover this as it was the final nail in the coffin for me. I'm not sure if they were aiming for replayability here, but it just created an awful amount of tedium and repetition for me to do the same things over again.

Speaking of tedium, the game seems to pride itself on not telling you where to go or what to do. There is a difference between open-ended exploring and just plain obtuseness and pretentiousness, the latter of which this game unfortunately falls under. I suspect the rave reviewers are a bit like Dark Souls reviewers - they use guides. I found no intuition in my 30+ years of gaming experience to be of use here.

To add to this, the physics and controls are awful too. Early in the game you control a little drone-like device that's basically harbinger of what's to come as it handles terribly and flops about before smashing into the ground.

When I visited each of the planets, I didn't find much of interest. Then I learned the game is a bit like piecing together a most annoying and tedious jigsaw where you have to hunt down the pieces.

As for the story, well I'd need to actually make progress in the game to learn the story or what the point is. I am clearly biased as I absolutely loathe the laziness of time-loop mechanics, so perhaps I was never going to enjoy this game.

Overall, I hate Outer Wilds. It's a pretentious indie game that tries too hard to be different and forgets to be enjoyable. It wasted too much of my time but I'm grateful I gave up when I did before wasting even more time.

The mouse sensitivity on PC is absolutely fukked. The input options have minimal effect, so for those of us who don't like high sensitivity aiming, controlling the camera is absurdly difficult.

The game looks nice, but this is the first time - ever, I think - that I simply cannot play a game that I bought because the control scheme is busted. It's a real shame.

Because it doesn't get any better.

I for myself couldn't let got and kept exploring just to find the same clues to the same phenomenons over and over and over.
Then, to actually beat the game, things get really ridiculous - at some point I couldn't be bothered anymore and just grabbed a walkthrough and how people are supposed to figure that out is beyond me. Maybe I'm stupid, and if it weren't for that, I wasn't motivated enough.

Either way - the big mystery you are supposed to solve isn't so big. It's regular space stuff.
And the ending is also just your run of the mill "Uhhh look it's like Space Odyssey or Interstellar, totally hasn't been done before, it's oh so clever"

So, what's good about the game:
It tricks you into going back to it to try new things you haven't tried before.

Here's what's bad about the game:
    Controls
    Storytelling
    Narrative
    Actually being interesting
Having to suicide over and over
    Autopilot will kill you
    The ending
What you have to do to get to the ending

Refunded the game because of horrible, horrible controls.

The sensitivity is all over the place, even when fiddling with sensitivity-controls.

If you get stuck somewhere, or run out of time while exploring one planet, just go somewhere else on your next loop. There are always a dozen different things to explore or try out.

Yes, the controls take some getting used to - you are flying through space. There is gravity. There is no air resistance. When you accelerate, you keep going faster, and you won't be able to stop on a dime. Planets orbit around the sun, so you'll need to adjust your velocity relative to them. With time, you will learn how to handle your spaceship correctly and fly quickly and land precisely.

If you like atmospheric games and you don't mind exploring planets just to satiate your own curiosity, rather than to shoot aliens, collect loot and drive forward some epic save the universe plot, you should find a lot to like in Outer Wilds. I recommend playing with headphones, a controller, and an open mind.

People that have played all the way through Outer Wilds, and people that think some other game deserves game of the year." Check out his 2019 games of the year for a review that somewhat does it justice. That being said, there's really no way to do this game justice through words alone. It must be experienced.

Now, it may not be for everyone. To truly appreciate it, you need to be fairly educated. You need to have an interest in Space, astrophysics, and cosmology. If you really enjoyed the show Cosmos, you'll love this game. If you enjoy puzzle/detective games, you'll love this game. If you enjoy those genres and also enjoy scary games, you'll love the DLC. The DLC (Echoes of The Eye) is amazing! Up there with The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC as the greatest DLCs ever released.

The game, like many puzzle/detective games, can have times where you get stuck. If you're getting frustrated, just go look on youtube for the answer. Don't let your pride keep you from experiencing the entirety of this game. I almost didn't finish it. I got stuck and refused to "cheat" by looking online. I got over that misguided notion, looked online, discovered I missed something obvious, and continued on.

When I finally beat this game, I was left sitting there with my mind blown like it hasn't been blown since Final Fantasy 7 as a kid, or The Last of Us years ago. This game is mind-blowing, spine-tingling, and heart-stirring. When I was playing the DLC at 2 am with the lights off, I was more frightened than I've ever been from any piece of media in my adult life. Yet I couldn't put the game down. Pure brilliance by the developers and can't wait to see what they do next. I highly doubt this game could ever be topped though.

You'd be a fool to miss this game and if you didn't enjoy this game, you most likely are a fool. I would give anything to play it again for the first time.

Pushing the boundaries of games as a medium, one loop at a time.

Clearly it looks at awesome games like Majora's Mask for inspiration, but with a lot of QoL enhancements that make this space detective/archeology simulator an adventure with little frustration (depending on how much attention you pay to what you read and how well you can put things together to solve the knowledge puzzles you'll be facing throughout the game).

The biggest QoL improvement over the Groundhog Day formula, is the level of freedom this game allows.

You can go right to the end of the game in one loop if you know what you're doing. There's also a TON of shortcuts and faster paths that once you know them save you a ton of time.

You even get a "Rest" mechanic that lets you choose EXACTLY how much time you want to skip to solve a time sensitive puzzle, unlike Majora's Mask which lets you skip in 12 hour intervals, making you stand around for NPCs to show up for several minutes.

Seriously, this game is REALLY good. It might be some of the best sci-fi content in recent history, since even sci-fi movies have been kinda stale lately, the last good piece of big budget sci-fi that's not goddamn Avengers or such was Interstellar.

Outer Wilds…..oh man, this game caught me completely off guard. I knew this was a puzzle game, and I’m not exactly that big into the genre, so I wasn’t really too sure if I would enjoy this. After reading reviews and its accolades, I decided it wouldn’t hurt to at least give it a shot, and I’m glad I did.

Be warned, this is a puzzle game. There are no power-ups, no weapons, no enemies or bosses, and no combat. What you have is a sense of exploration. The basic premise of this title is that you have a spaceship, planets to explore, and a story to piece together. That’s it. But, here’s the thing, this is where the game absolutely shines. From the get go, you can take off in your spaceship in any direction you desire; it’s completely up to you where you want to go. However, it’s not that easy to just pick a place and go exploring; you have to understand and figure out the secret to these planets, and to do so, you have to understand what is going on from the bits and pieces of lore you come across. Arming yourself with knowledge will get you one step closer to figuring out what’s going on. Unlike in other games where obtaining a new power-up will open a new path for you, that path has been open from the start, the answer always right in front of you, but it’s up to you to tease it out.

I will say this, I did not expect Outer Wilds to be this good. I honestly think it’s a masterpiece. I get it, maybe learning that it’s a puzzle game might lose your interest a bit, but it’s more heavily focused on the exploration aspect than solving a complex puzzle. The more you explore, the closer you are to finding the solution. Seriously, get this; you won’t regret it one bit.

    - User Interface: Very minimalistic, but tells you everything you would want to know. The game doesn’t hold your hand with elaborate maps, as this game is about exploration. (10/10)

    Sound: 10/10

    - Voice acting: Not relevant. (-/10)
    - Music: Incredible score. Every location and discovery has something distinct yet very fitting. Gives you goosebumps. (10/10)
    - Sound effects: Masterfully crafted, gives you great feedback when you need to rely on sounds. (10/10)

    Gameplay: 9.3/10

    - Controls (ease of use): The ship’s controls are difficult by design. Similarly, your suit has limited resources. I found the controls reasonably responsive, I only had some issues with my drone. (9/10)
    - Unique systems: No spoilers, but there are so many unique systems you HAVE to discover and understand that it is incredible. (10/10)
    - Difficulty (settings, scaling, etc.): Challenging at points. Also, you don’t level up in the game, you gain knowledge and get more experienced with the controls. (10/10)
    - Grind: The game is about exploration, and you have to visit some locations a frustrating amount of times, in my opinion. (8/10)

    Story/Lore/World: 8.8/10

    - Characters: There are quite a few characters in the game, but I wouldn’t say they are especially memorable. Some characters you actually interact with, some you only read about. I would say that the characters may be the game’s weakest point. (6/10)
    - Writing quality: There is a lot of reading in this game. It is kind of weird sometimes: you read casual conversation, yet you gain immense knowledge from them. Some conversations can be witty or funny at times, a great experience overall. (9/10)
    - World design: Every location is so unique and the world is so alive. My only issue is that the solar system and the planets are very small, but it is impressive how much can fit in such tight spaces… (10/10)
    - Story/Lore: There is an incredible story told here, that you have to piece together yourself. Same with the lore. No spoilers, you have to experience this yourself! (10/10)

    Technical: 9.5/10

    - Optimization: Never had a problem with FPS drops. (10/10)
    - Bugs: Not much to talk about, you can get stuck a few times. (9/10)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I do understand the good reviews a few things made the game very frustrating. Be it accidentally crashing into the sun (manually or on autopilot), the anglerfish or the dark caverns with jumping puzzles. The 22 minute loop, while core part of the game, felt too short, sometimes when I made progress it was already time and the trek back (the hanging city for example) was annoying. I also had trouble entering the ATP and had to look up a guide on how to do it and problems with the anglerfish (I found all clues but somehow didn't think about the thrusters).

I loved the music and aesthetics and thought a lot about the game, even while I was not playing which rarely happens nowadays. Overall a nice experience but some clues just went over my head.

But at other times, the game is tedious and frustrating when either you run out of time before you can do what you want, or when you just can't work out a puzzle.

For me at least, i found the story enthralling and beautifully crafted with cheerful and funny characters that i absolutely loved, even though they never spoke.

However, at a couple of places i just could not work out what to do, which forced me to look up a guide on youtube. Now for me, this made the game a lot less appealing to me, as it completely ruined the immersion and made me quite frustrated because of it. I actually quit the game for a week , and only came back to it because a friend begged me to finish it because the ending is amazing.

So I played it again, and i beat the game. And he was right, the ending of the game is absolutely magnificent, scary and thought provoking. Now i won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the end ing, but trust me, play it through to the end, it's worth it.

    Long review:
(10-no problem, 9- few minor problems, 8- few major problems, 7- a lot of major p., 6- it delivers on the fun, but not more, 5- it tries hard but fall short , 4-1- different variants of sh**)

---{Story 10/10}--- (the main dish of this game)
-horror: while not a horror game, the feeling of fear, dread, hopelessness can be felt.
-story arc and lore: every now and then the game resets, leaving you only with the info you gathered till that moment. and while everything you read is more or less a hint for you, they also act as lore, giving context to everything. a lot of the games feel is to empathizing with those who came before.
-realism: the game is inherently a fantasy, trying hard to talk science with real-world equivalent, and at the end it delivers.

---{Visuals: 9/10}--- (-1 for lack of small detail)
-Detail only where needed; the game has nearly no visual detail in places you wont go to too often.
    -Cartoonish; it fits the theme
-vibrant and alive; everything continues to go, as if you didn't exist,
-variety; many different places with different looks and styles.
-artful: in a lot of the places, you just want to look at.

    ---{Sound 10/10}---
great timing: the tracks themself are simple, but combined with the enviorment, and timing, and you have an impact

    ---{Gameplay: 8.5/10}--- (-1.5 for performance)
-connect the dots: the game really helps you to make connections. even giving you "ship logs" which is technically a board of all things you saw and read, and it even connects the dots for you. BUT, you have to use your brain.
for example: you see a corpse in a room, with the text in its hand saying "im going to put this text outside of the room"; that means this person died before he could do that; now you have to ask, why is he dead, he doesn’t mention pain or anything, he just die suddenly?.
if this process feels natural, you’ll be ok.
-performance: it won’t run smooth, it’s to be expected of a simulation game, but this is a bit worse than expectation
-player driven: you have to ask and look for answers. Why you do that, will change over time.
-Sandbox: nearly all you do has no impact as it resets after a while, the only thing you can change, is your knowledge of the world
-Ship control: physics based. it’s not a simple point and move, you will get better at it while you go forward.
objective system: while the game has a "go here" system (a sound beam detector), nearly all stuff are in places that either look cool, or act in odd ways (e.g.: smoke going up in the middle of nowhere)
-Text hunting*: a lot of text all around the place, but written well, just long enough to give depth, and since you might read something you shouldn't, it has hints to places to understand more.
if you’re like me, and only read a book when you run out of sleep pills, then you will have a hard time in this game, (as i did) my advice is to set the language to something else (so to be unable to read) and explore the visuals for a while, remember, this game resets every now and then, so nothing you do has an effect, so don't worry about being spoiled with what you see INGAME (not on google)
    ---------------------
-Audience: anyone willing to listen (for at least 1 hour)
-PC Requirements: a good pc, but the game is also inherently slow-paced, so even 20fps would be enough.
-Difficulty: This was the first time I played an adventure game. For me connecting the dots and getting around was easy. So much so, that I finished the game without even exploring 2 of the planets (I found the secret they had to offer by accident and trial and error)
-Game Time: I finished it in 10 hours
    -Price: Fair enough
-Bugs: Some bugs, nothing to important
-updates, DLC, replayability: the only thing you hate in this game (if you finish it) is the fact that when your journey ends, its over. Nothing more. nothing less. you can now go from new game to finish in 15 minutes or even less. I’m really jealous of those whom haven’t been spoiled by the game

There is no progression in this game other than gaining of new knowledge which gives you a better understanding of the rules of these worlds and how to solve their riddles. It's like getting a key item at the end of a maze, except there is no item but a few new neural connections in your brain which are just as good at getting you through your next challenge, and it works great.

The controls are not intuitive to most people at first but you get used to them very quickly (what do you know, flying a spaceship can be hard, who would have thought), the puzzles are all challenging without being unfair (ok, maybe some of them were a bit too hard for my liking but not enough to make me mad about them) and the game does a good job helping you manage the information you gather via your ship's log, which is a great boon in my opinion.

Other than that the art style is simplistic but effective, the soundtrack is top-notch and I can seriously not think of a single moment throughout my play through where I felt like I wanted to put down the controller and leave the game. Overall it has to be one of the greatest games I ever had the pleasure of playing through.

Um jogo que vai fazer você desejar ter uma pequena amnesia, para poder joga-lo novamente. Eu recomendo Outer para todo mundo. Para todos que apreciem uma boa história. E um jogo feito por amor.

Very good game. The only direction you're given is to explore. You're given full freedom to go anywhere your curiosity leads you in this small solar system.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can I say about Outer Wilds.

All I can say is it is the best game I have ever played.
Now you may say that I've only got 20 or so hours on it. That is because it is all I needed to experience how good this game is.
This Indie game does a better job of creating a gameplay loop than most triple A titles and creates the best experience of exploration in the world. The gameplay is simple with about 3 or four main mechanics to learn and is very intuitive.

The world in general is amazingly crafted and refined it is not huge it is not limitless but the world of this game will have you invested and interested in the story and in fact the only thing I will talk about in detail is how beautiful this story is.

The story is sweet; short enough if you know what you are doing you can complete the game in 10 mins.
But this story is about the why. In this dark and cold universe we call home, on this **** little planet called earth. Why? Why listen to music if it is going to be forgotten? Why care if this Universe will be snuffed out in a moments notice? When all is said and done will you be remembered? Why then do you talk to people? Why then do you sit around the campfire and sing?

'The outer wilds is an optimistic game about nihilism. It's a game with no invisible walls, you can complete it in ten minutes if you know what to do -which you won't for hours- and the only limit is knowledge. It's a game like no other. The universe is big and impossible and daft and you. You happen to be experiencing it at the exact same point as the Outer Wilds as well. Embrace that coincidence. Come on what are you waiting for? The sun could explode tomorrow.'

My personal rating - better than any game out there (atm of 2020). Play it. Experience it. Re-live it. In this beautiful supernova called life you can only play this game once, and I implore you this game is like no other. This is my favourite game of all time it could be yours

This review isn't really intended to give potential buyers advice, instead I'll say the following:
This game isn't for everyone, but if you do play, PLEASE avoid any spoilers to this game. The game only works if you play it blind. If you do like it, it may end up one of your all time favourites.

    There are many puzzle games.
    There are many riddle games.
There are many games with good lore.
There is no other game that does puzzles, riddles, interconnected game play mechanics, good lore, feelings, music and everything else, perfect.
    Outer Wilds is that game.

More than in any other game I've played, information is truly everything, so I can't figure out what I can safely say except that it is beautiful and unique and has my highest recommendation, and that if exploring mysteries in space sounds even slightly appealing then you should read nothing else and start playing.

This really is a beautifully crafted game, but unfortunately doesn’t connect with everyone - I was one of them. However, it’s impossible to give this game a fair shot and not respect the brilliant design. It’s a blend of the world building and blind exploration of Myst/Riven, the time loop of Majora’s Mask, and the spirit of space exploration of No Man’s Sky. However, it’s impossible to give this game a fair shot and not respect the brilliant design. It’s a blend of the world building and blind exploration of Myst/Riven, the time loop of Majora’s Mask, and the spirit of space exploration of No Man’s Sky. I enjoyed all three of these games in the past, but this one was a lot to digest, possibly too much to digest for some. The little solar system they created is really cool, it steps outside of a conventional solar system that we expect based on what we know. The planets seem pretty small and linear at first - it’s not like a Fallout or Skyrim game where you have a labyrinth or sprawling world underneath, but more so a carefully crafted zone that is intended to be followed a specific way. The lore is hit or miss, at least to me. Sometimes the backstory is kind of interesting, but most times it’s very surface level and just uninteresting. The story/lore is sometimes just following the explorer who was there just before you - not a bad plot, but very unimaginative. Sometimes the plot will cover something a little more interesting, but generally most of the plot lines are bland until a bit later in the game. I do like the exploration and learning to the game, nothing is force fed, there are no checkpoints, you just slowly become more engaged in the world. The graphics are pretty forgettable but that isn’t much of an issue because the visuals of the solar system living are sometimes very cool to see. The controls are tough at first, but once you figure it out, it gives a nice consistent challenge that adds to the gameplay. Overall I appreciate this game and respect it for what it is. It’s a very very very slow burn that won’t work for everyone, but there is a great game waiting for those who can get into it. Expand

This is one of those games that are created once in many years, its artistic complexity, its soundtrack, its story makes it more than just a game, an experience that you would like to forget just to repeat it once more, incredible.

I can't top the reviews from Kotaku or others... Glowing praise cannot capture the range of emotion this story instilled in me. Simply magnificent, in every way possible. Only drawback is that the game is unique in it's splendor and the player has no welcoming sequel to cradle them when the tale is finally over. Play this before you die.

Outer Wilds is rife with breathtaking sights and sounds, and at the very least, no one could accuse it of being unambitious. Mobius Digital may be a small team but, almost paradoxically, they achieve a remarkable sense of scope by keeping things modest. However, their work suffers from the glacial pace of progress and a hands-off approach to storytelling. My biggest issues – a lack of combat, direction, or material rewards – are obviously deliberate, bold choices on the part of the devs, and I commend Mobius for them while also chiding the cold, inscrutable product that resulted. I admire Outer Wilds, but I don’t love it.

This temporally unique game adds something new with your every death and moves the story forward beautifully. The environments are breathtaking, the music will soothe you. This is the perfect game for those of you who are, above all, curious.

For those who won’t be deterred by the endless deaths and time-looped backtracking in Outer Wilds, its intriguing mystery and non-linear exploration of an entire solar system will be a novel and deeply engaging experience.
