I wish I could play this game again for the first time. No game breaking bugs found, good story, and every planet has secrets everywhere that you have to piece together to find how to beat the game. The only gripe I have is the time limit, but it was rarely an issue, and it is needed because planets change over time anyways.

This game made me feel that continuous feeling of awe and wonder, facing continuously towards the unknown, like any other game.
The planets may seem small at first, but they are full with handcrafted details, and even considering this, Outer Wilds is still capable of making the player aware of the immense scale of the cosmos, in a small solar system where everything changes continuously during gameplay.

Outer Wilds presents a superb non-linear narration, as I said you can travel anywhere and discover parts of a "puzzle" large as a solar system until you finally have an epiphany and reveal the bigger picture. Anyway the game is much more than cycling through all the possible locations since many places aren't easy to reach and will be precluded to you until you find out HOW to reach them.
In Outer Wilds nothing is really locked, the main progress you do are the things you learn about along the way.
The amount of original mechanics that you'll investigate is just incredible and refreshing.

It's an experience worth playing in 1st person, one of the most interesting sci-fi stories ever created, don't get spoiled watching a walkthrough.
If you like space exploration, discovering the unknown and visiting a solar system like no other, then go buy Outer Wilds because you'll love it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can I say about Outer Wilds.

All I can say is it is the best game I have ever played.
Now you may say that I've only got 20 or so hours on it. That is because it is all I needed to experience how good this game is.
This Indie game does a better job of creating a gameplay loop than most triple A titles and creates the best experience of exploration in the world. The gameplay is simple with about 3 or four main mechanics to learn and is very intuitive.

The world in general is amazingly crafted and refined it is not huge it is not limitless but the world of this game will have you invested and interested in the story and in fact the only thing I will talk about in detail is how beautiful this story is.

The story is sweet; short enough if you know what you are doing you can complete the game in 10 mins.
But this story is about the why. In this dark and cold universe we call home, on this **** little planet called earth. Why? Why listen to music if it is going to be forgotten? Why care if this Universe will be snuffed out in a moments notice? When all is said and done will you be remembered? Why then do you talk to people? Why then do you sit around the campfire and sing?

'The outer wilds is an optimistic game about nihilism. It's a game with no invisible walls, you can complete it in ten minutes if you know what to do -which you won't for hours- and the only limit is knowledge. It's a game like no other. The universe is big and impossible and daft and you. You happen to be experiencing it at the exact same point as the Outer Wilds as well. Embrace that coincidence. Come on what are you waiting for? The sun could explode tomorrow.'
    - Daniel 'Nerdcubed' Hardcastle 2019

My personal rating - better than any game out there (atm of 2020). Play it. Experience it. Re-live it. In this beautiful supernova called life you can only play this game once, and I implore you this game is like no other. This is my favourite game of all time it could be yours

I can't top the reviews from Kotaku or others... Glowing praise cannot capture the range of emotion this story instilled in me. Simply magnificent, in every way possible. Only drawback is that the game is unique in it's splendor and the player has no welcoming sequel to cradle them when the tale is finally over. Play this before you die.

The soundtrack is amazing. It creates perfect atmospheres for the different locations and situations that you find yourself in the game.

The gameplay is awesome. This game has some of the best physics in any game. Flying around and exploring a fully working solar system is crazy. There's this sense of urgency in almost every planet. It feels like you have to be fast or you might get crushed by sand or maybe fall into a black hole after the crust of the planet crumbles down.

The story is great. First I thought it was rather boring but after i discovered more and more in the solar system i started to really enjoy the story and the mysteries of the game. The final trip you make from the Ash twin project to the vessel is nothing but epic. After learning everything you can and gathering all the knowledge, you make the epic final journey. It also feels like there's actual stakes at play because after taking out the warp drive, the loop technically ends. And if you die, it's all over.

    Truly awesome game.

This game is an excellent way to show the immersive experience of "human fear comes from the unknown", and players will continue to explore under the drive of curiosity. At the same time, there is no lack of scientific combination and fantasy of the universe, which greatly stimulates Interest in play.
Everyone comes to the world with fear and curiosity about the unknown, and does not know what the world will be like after death. However, this game is allowing players to experience countless cycles of life and death. The final ending is not to avoid death, but to allow players to see the rebirth of the universe, the beginning of a new story in the new universe, so that players can go from being unwilling to death to accepting and looking forward to the new At the beginning of the game, the theme of the game is carried out with optimistic thinking about the meaning of life, which makes people feel a sense of sudden enlightenment.
I think this is the best science fiction game in history. God made.
It is not only a perfect combination of game mechanics and storytelling, it also establishes the standard for science fiction exploration and decryption games.
It is excellent because it is a mixture of quantum theory, time traversal, stars and seas, and foreign exploration, and it achieves logical self-consistent in both the plot and setting levels?
    Nope.
Because of romance, the final and ultimate romance that only science fiction can present.

    1. USE A CONTROLLER! The game was made for a controller and does not work without one.

    2. The game has a SLOW START. it takes a little while to get going but once you do there is no stopping.

    3. If you get stuck USE THE SHIP LOG. In watching 3 people play through outer wilds the biggest mistake I see is people not using the ship logs rumor mode.

    4. DON'T LOOK ANYTHING UP. Ok, maybe a puzzle solution here or there but having the ending or any other plot points spoiled without the context of playing the rest of the game removes all of their impact.

Nextly, I would like to address a few null complaints that baffle me as to how they were conceived. Many people complain about there being no saves but there is nothing to save. I really don't understand this one. There is no inventory, no level system, or anything. The only thing that needs to be saved is the info you gather, and what do you know, it is! Another one of the complaints is for the physics. I don't need to go into how every planets orbit is dynamically rendered to get the point across that the physics are well thought out. The final 2 common complains I already mostly covered however I will restate them. If you are complaining about controls, then you are using mouse and keyboard instead of the intended way of playing with controller. If you think the game is slow or you feel lost, get past early game and use the ship logs rumor mode. Thank you and goodbye

All you have is your ship, your character, and the knowledge you gain along the way about the worlds around you and the secrets that make them tick. It's little secret that you play within a brief time loop. So not only are you finding out what info you can, piecing together this info as you go, but you have something to motivate you to do so with expediency. In addition it means you don't have to concern yourself with any sort of survival mechanics that would otherwise bog down the experience (they simply don't exist in the game). The only downside is that you can only play the game for the first time once as upon learning what you need to know to succeed, you can (and must) beat the game within one time loop.

"If you could wipe your brain of a game to experience it for the first time again, what game would you say?" Outer Wilds is the first thing to come to my mind every single time.

The soundtrack is so emotional especially no really only if you've beaten the game, Generally The game is so emotional to the point that it can't be considered a casual video game for fun but a masterpiece of art. 99% of people who play the whole game through agree that it is an amazing experience and it must be played with as little knowledge of the game it's self before playing. I urge anyone who is reading this review to please go into the game blind. Don't look up guides for any of the puzzles. Trust me when I say this. Once you are done with the game you will wish to wipe your memory of the game and play it over again as if you were playing again for the first time. Expand

The game is a cozy space exploration game that asks you to solve the gigantic puzzle that is the solar system. Stuck somewhere? go to another planet you might find the answer there or another piece of the puzzle waiting to be entangled,.

The music keeps this leitmotif through all of the galaxy, its menus an eventually it's endings. Once you find it it will stay with you forever like the game.

The first thing that catches your eye is the lack of a clear storyline in the sense that you don't have to go through 200 triggers to finish the game, you can easily get through the game in the first 22 minutes (which is how long one time loop lasts) (well unless you have crooked hands), and the rest of the story exploration is up to you. In fact, the first time I played Outer Wilds, I quickly abandoned it because of this feature. However, after a year or two I got into it and got into the gameplay. The mechanics of finding different clues are top-notch: every time you solve a complex puzzle, and get a piece of important information, which in the logbook is converted into an entire virtual board where everything is interconnected, you feel like a detective, or a discoverer. And the attention to detail - let me be blunt, almost every moment in the game is explained and often linked to other facts. This is especially noticeable when you've already been through the game, and dipped back into it again. The story here is great and evokes some emotion, well the music, atmosphere and other stuff is incredible. And the last thing worth mentioning is the time. It plays a crucial role in the gameplay, the story, the details, and almost every aspect of the game. Some moments are impossible to get through if you don't arrive on time. Let's say a planet with a black hole inside eventually destroys itself, and its pieces "float" in weightlessness near a white hole, or two connected planets, one of which is filled with sand and the other is freed from it.
It could go on for a very long time, so all I can tell you is just play it, and it's important to know as little about it as possible (which is why I've said almost nothing about the plot). It's well worth it. And the DLC too, it's awesome. Sure, it's a game for a fan, there's a lot of text that underpins almost the entire narrative of the story, sometimes unrealistically complex puzzles, but all that for me is outweighed by all its pluses.
For me, Outer Wilds is the best game of all time.

Outer Wilds is an absolutely astonishing game. The sense of awe and wonder that rewards exploration is unparalleled. A solar System populated by Planets full of Other Worldly beauty dread, mystery and Alien tech, that will have you aching to return to so you can learn a little bit more each time, to gradually expose more of an over arching central mystery.
If you are reading these reviews because you are not sure whether to buy this game or not, be aware that this is not a linear game of exploration. There is no central "story line" that leads you through the game the kind that you might find in the Tomb Raider reboots, and as such, the first few hours may seem directionless and meandering.
Also, it is not easy. From handling a Space craft, to moving on the surface of a planet, the puzzles and understanding how to manipulate your environment is something you are going to have to learn on your own. No hand holding here.
I am not going to lie, I went to the internet on a couple of occasions to look at a guide, and rather that spoiling the experience for me, actually made me appreciate more fully the depth and complexity of this game.
If none of the above puts you off, I definitely recommend this stunning game.
Don't miss out on one of the most original and best games of the decade.

There's no main objective or quest, it's a game driven by the player and the world-building. There are a few great twists that help it ascend over many other games that try similar things. There's no hand-holding, and although it's difficult to put it in one specific genre, I'd say if you've ever played Myst, or any of its sequels, you'll probably enjoy it. That being said, don't expect overly complex puzzles. Most of the puzzles are more about understanding the world than about solving mechanisms.
Overall a splendid game, full of places to explore and one of the more original titles in recent memory.

I've read comments about people complaining about controls, but I feel like they were well done. Moving in space isn't as easy as it is on our planet, it takes a bit of time to get used to 0g, but the game even gives you a button to match the speed of an object so I don't really understand what they have to complain about on that matter.

    I only have 2 complaints:
    1) It would have been cool if they added more dialogues with the inhabitants of your home planet. Even just a "WE ARE ALL GONNA DIEEEEE" would have sufficed for SOME of them. Instead you get to talk with them normally even if you know in less than half a hour everyone is gonna be dead.
Basically the only dialogues that change with your game progress are with the first inhabitant you see when you wake up and with the other adventures (and even then it's quite limited what changes).

    2) I'm not really too fond on events happening on a certain time span. The loophole thingy is fine, but adding the fact that you can only reach certain locations in the first X minutes or the last Y minutes is a bit infuriating at times.

Overall I rate it 9/10, I'm not a fan of space games but this one was really well done.
If you feel lost, try to look for clues in the computer of your ship, or by talking with adventurers.

    - Sound effects: Masterfully crafted, gives you great feedback when you need to rely on sounds. (10/10)

    Gameplay: 9.3/10

    - Controls (ease of use): The ship’s controls are difficult by design. Similarly, your suit has limited resources. I found the controls reasonably responsive, I only had some issues with my drone. (9/10)
    - Unique systems: No spoilers, but there are so many unique systems you HAVE to discover and understand that it is incredible. (10/10)

    - Writing quality: There is a lot of reading in this game. It is kind of weird sometimes: you read casual conversation, yet you gain immense knowledge from them. Some conversations can be witty or funny at times, a great experience overall. (9/10)
    - World design: Every location is so unique and the world is so alive. My only issue is that the solar system and the planets are very small, but it is impressive how much can fit in such tight spaces… (10/10)

The game itself gives you hints, what places you should investigate further, if there is still crucial information for you to be gathered there. So you can't get really stuck in the story.

Setting the graphics settings to lowest, does not yield any noticeable performance gains. I decided to play on max settings though, as there literally where no difference in performance between the two extremes.
This is marring an otherwise shiny gem of a game.

It would have been a 10 if it weren't because of the performance problems.
Remember, mystery-open-world-exploration games are not for everyone, so the score is for those who are.

I left a much more detailed review on the Steam Community page for the game.

I've been playing games for over 30 years now, and I've never played a game quite like this before. There are so many new concepts and mechanics, many of which are used to construct a solar system full of the craziest planets imaginable! There are so many new concepts and mechanics, many of which are used to construct a solar system full of the craziest planets imaginable! Every time I save and quit for the day I want to go and babble to my SO about all of the insane things that I came across (or that happened to me) while playing... like getting eaten by a giant lanternfish haunting the impossibly large inside of a tiny planet's core, or having a volcanic moon orbiting above spit out a blob of magma that then hit the tectonic plate I was standing on, dropping it and me into the black hole at the planet's center, only to be spit out of a wormhole a world away. Piloting your tiny ship, hopping out in deep space to make repairs, or just taking a big running jump and using your jetpack to literally orbit the entire planet you're on... it all just feels so fresh and right. I've laughed out loud in delight so many times while playing this!

The story and writing are fantastic; I love discovering alien ruins and reading their conversations with each other in an effort to understand the fate of the solar system. After six hours of game play I'm just starting to get an idea of the problem and some vague hints that might lead towards a solution, but I know I've barely scratched the surface of all there is to discover.

I'm taking off just one point for a couple of things that really kill performance (like trying to land on Giant's Deep), and because the one weak point of the gameplay is how easy it is to get stuck trying to move the story forward without a guide. There are just so many places to go and things to see - some of which can only be done at very specific times within the loop in which you're stuck - that it would require either a stupid amount of luck or WAAAAAY too much time and trial & error to find everything unaided.

Still, this is a game that's trying just a stupid number of new ideas and concepts, and the fact that they made so many of them work so well is a testament to the team. I also really appreciate the fact that they're sending out product keys for both Epic Game store AND Steam to anyone who requested a steam key. They had to take Epic's money (and thus exclusive deal) to get the game done to their standards, but they understood the objections to that and did what they could to make it right. More companies should follow their examples.

First game I've rated, but I had to tell people about Outer Wilds. This game is so beautiful and wondrous but unfortunately will be a sleeper for a lot of people and so I want to spread the word that everyone who likes games should try it. The magical mysterious worlds you explore will stick with you long after your done playing.

Outer wilds is the type of game that rewards bravery and punishes those who dawdle. Playing this game feels like you are putting the last pieces together of someone else's puzzle. You never really know where you will end up in this game and it makes me love it.

Wonderful music, atmosphere, strong writing and a small galaxy that feels much bigger than most space games with its variety of planet mechanics and sense of fear.

Just a fun freaking videogame. Deep gameplay, great humor, tight controls. Gives you what you want from a light-hearted sci-fi fps.

This game is a wonderful experience: Very interesting story, simple and yet beautiful graphics, great art design and a good gameplay ( better experienced with a gamepad).

This is really impressive that it took me 20 hours to solve a game that can be beaten in 20 minutes. No cheats, no level progression - just knowledge and understanding you learn as a player.

    I completed the game.

This game is a difficult one for me to review. At times this game is amazing, with an immersive story that just makes you want to desperately beat the game. But at other times, the game is tedious and frustrating when either you run out of time before you can do what you want, or when you just can't work out a puzzle.

But at other times, the game is tedious and frustrating when either you run out of time before you can do what you want, or when you just can't work out a puzzle.

For me at least, i found the story enthralling and beautifully crafted with cheerful and funny characters that i absolutely loved, even though they never spoke.

However, at a couple of places i just could not work out what to do, which forced me to look up a guide on youtube. Now for me, this made the game a lot less appealing to me, as it completely ruined the immersion and made me quite frustrated because of it. I actually quit the game for a week , and only came back to it because a friend begged me to finish it because the ending is amazing.

So I played it again, and i beat the game. And he was right, the ending of the game is absolutely magnificent, scary and thought provoking. Now i won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen the end ing, but trust me, play it through to the end, it's worth it.

    Great game - 9/10

Finally a space exploration game that isn't roguelite. Creative mechanics and puzzles, genius locations, great music and mysterious world.

Sadly npcs are a joke and the world feels kind of lifeless sometimes.

Short Review: a sandbox space text adventure; the experience is hard to explain and can only be felt the first time you play, knowing nothing about it, any spoiler is detrimental. your main drive is at first simple curiosity and then a sense of urgency to save your world. try to just stay in game for more than an hour, the rest of the feeling will just come by itself.

    Long review:
(10-no problem, 9- few minor problems, 8- few major problems, 7- a lot of major p., 6- it delivers on the fun, but not more, 5- it tries hard but fall short , 4-1- different variants of sh**)

---{Story 10/10}--- (the main dish of this game)
-horror: while not a horror game, the feeling of fear, dread, hopelessness can be felt.
-story arc and lore: every now and then the game resets, leaving you only with the info you gathered till that moment. and while everything you read is more or less a hint for you, they also act as lore, giving context to everything. a lot of the games feel is to empathizing with those who came before.
-realism: the game is inherently a fantasy, trying hard to talk science with real-world equivalent, and at the end it delivers.

---{Visuals: 9/10}--- (-1 for lack of small detail)
-Detail only where needed; the game has nearly no visual detail in places you wont go to too often.
    -Cartoonish; it fits the theme
-vibrant and alive; everything continues to go, as if you didn't exist,
-variety; many different places with different looks and styles.
-artful: in a lot of the places, you just want to look at.

    ---{Sound 10/10}---
great timing: the tracks themself are simple, but combined with the enviorment, and timing, and you have an impact

    ---{Gameplay: 8.5/10}--- (-1.5 for performance)
-connect the dots: the game really helps you to make connections. even giving you "ship logs" which is technically a board of all things you saw and read, and it even connects the dots for you. BUT, you have to use your brain.
for example: you see a corpse in a room, with the text in its hand saying "im going to put this text outside of the room"; that means this person died before he could do that; now you have to ask, why is he dead, he doesn’t mention pain or anything, he just die suddenly?.
if this process feels natural, you’ll be ok.
-performance: it won’t run smooth, it’s to be expected of a simulation game, but this is a bit worse than expectation
-player driven: you have to ask and look for answers. Why you do that, will change over time.
-Sandbox: nearly all you do has no impact as it resets after a while, the only thing you can change, is your knowledge of the world
-Ship control: physics based. it’s not a simple point and move, you will get better at it while you go forward.
objective system: while the game has a "go here" system (a sound beam detector), nearly all stuff are in places that either look cool, or act in odd ways (e.g.: smoke going up in the middle of nowhere)
-Text hunting*: a lot of text all around the place, but written well, just long enough to give depth, and since you might read something you shouldn't, it has hints to places to understand more.
if you’re like me, and only read a book when you run out of sleep pills, then you will have a hard time in this game, (as i did) my advice is to set the language to something else (so to be unable to read) and explore the visuals for a while, remember, this game resets every now and then, so nothing you do has an effect, so don't worry about being spoiled with what you see INGAME (not on google)
    ---------------------
-Audience: anyone willing to listen (for at least 1 hour)
-PC Requirements: a good pc, but the game is also inherently slow-paced, so even 20fps would be enough.
-Difficulty: This was the first time I played an adventure game. For me connecting the dots and getting around was easy. So much so, that I finished the game without even exploring 2 of the planets (I found the secret they had to offer by accident and trial and error)
-Game Time: I finished it in 10 hours
    -Price: Fair enough
-Bugs: Some bugs, nothing to important
-updates, DLC, replayability: the only thing you hate in this game (if you finish it) is the fact that when your journey ends, its over. Nothing more. nothing less. you can now go from new game to finish in 15 minutes or even less. I’m really jealous of those whom haven’t been spoiled by the game

Spaceflight/jetpack using Newtonian physics. It can be a little awkward at first (I accidentally flew straight to the edge of the solar system the first time) but once you get the hang of it it's easy and very fun to move around.
The real selling point of this game is the way you discover more and more about the system you're in. Following clue after clue to progress the narrative is extremely rewarding and it's so well done you are very rarely, if ever, stuck wondering where you should go next (check your ship log!).

    Music: 9/10
It's all very good...when it's there. Music is not playing during most of the game and only starts during important moments/sequences.

    Story/Writing: 9/10
As mentioned above, the way the story is told is clever and very engaging. The story itself, however, is just alright. There isn't anything wrong with it, but I disagree with all the claims of it being emotionally impactful or leaving a lasting impression. Before you roast me, yes I am sure I did everything in the game. I still give it a 9/10 because the environmental storytelling and discovery elements are just that good.

    Setting/Art/Aesthetic etc: 10/10
It's a more cartoon-y visual style but it just... fits. Not really sure how to explain this one but I love how this game looks.

This game is so close to being a perfect 10, but in the end the just ok story causes it to fall short. I know this is a hot take, but that's the impression the narrative left on me. That being said, I would still highly recommend playing this game. It is exceptionally unique and stands out far above most games released in 2019. I enjoyed it so much I can wholeheartedly recommend paying full price for it. This is one you definitely do not want to miss.

PS. The PC version of the game is limited to 60fps. This did not dull my enjoyment of the game at all.

The gameplay is so fresh, unexpected, and the time spent on the game is really rewarding.
To me that's a classic on that aspect, but when it comes to graphics, it's not its strenght even if that's pretty decent.
The lore is pretty well written and get really emphasized with the gameplay, you can tell after playing it that the developpers have really put time into making the whole thing coherent.

The game is good and marvelous. Fascinating story, design and music.
    Time for joke:

Outer Wilds is rife with breathtaking sights and sounds, and at the very least, no one could accuse it of being unambitious. Mobius Digital may be a small team but, almost paradoxically, they achieve a remarkable sense of scope by keeping things modest. However, their work suffers from the glacial pace of progress and a hands-off approach to storytelling. My biggest issues – a lack of combat, direction, or material rewards – are obviously deliberate, bold choices on the part of the devs, and I commend Mobius for them while also chiding the cold, inscrutable product that resulted. I admire Outer Wilds, but I don’t love it.

For those who won’t be deterred by the endless deaths and time-looped backtracking in Outer Wilds, its intriguing mystery and non-linear exploration of an entire solar system will be a novel and deeply engaging experience.
