Although not without its flaws, the everlasting quality of this game cannot be overlooked. New graphics, magnificent world, great characterization, good story and phenomenal music, make this old school gem a blast to play. Clunky gunplay and controls can stand in the way sometimes, but overall, they are not enough to ruin the experience of traversing through Adelpha.

Outcast: Second Contact succeeds in bringing the experience of the original game over to the modern era, despite some of its issues. The work done in the visual and music department is worthy of applause and most of the design changes are spot-on. If some of the missteps regarding the controls and camera system, as well as the bugs that are present, were avoided then the overall score would have been quite a bit higher. As it stands, if you have fond memories of the original and want to relive that experience, Outcast: Second Contact is a very faithful adaptation that will take you upwards of 18-20 hours to finish.

A fine remake of a game that deserves to be played as much as it gets fondly remembered.

One of the most creative and well executed titles ever released, dragged down by a disappointing remaster.

Despite a heavy nostalgic bonus, the snazzy façade does not quite comfort you over the outdated core. [..] In terms of graphics Second Contact appears like a full-featured Remake but in fact it's a remaster.

Outcast - Second Contact is the best excuse to enjoy of a great classic but this remake feels like a lost opportunity because its antiquated combat system and poor controls.

Outcast: Second Contact is a very good remaster as the core of the game remains unchanged while it's looks have been completely overhauled to fit modern hardware and players. A very good way to bring the nostalgia vibe for the seasoned players, and to make younger players discover this adventure.

Even as a remake, Outcast: Second Contact isn't up to date, but offers a very purist open-world experience.

An experience that still has a lot to offer eighteen years after its release, and when nothing else, it serves as a textbook of the whole game scene development. Otherwise, it suffers for its outdated systems and poor technical state, not even good visuals can save it.

The original game impressed me so much in 1999. I loved it to bits. But I can’t help but feel a little disappointed with the outcome of Outcast – Second Contact. A complete rework of the original game would be worth the asking price ($30), but it’s just not been given the full makeover it truly deserves. That said, I would love for Appeal to be given the opportunity to create a sequel and revisit this fantastic world.

When Outcast was published 18 years ago, it was ahead of its time in many ways. It can still be impressive, but the remaster does very little to adjust it to modern conditions. I could have turned the blind eye to unevenly refreshed visuals but Second Coming is oppressively archaic in too many aspects and shamefully buggy even after two patches. [03/2018, p.55]

Outcast hasn't improved on its accessibility enough to appeal to modern audiences. [Jan 2018, p.80]

It's not a half-ass HD re-release like many others, but a real remake that is really looking nice with 2017 graphics, very good soundtrack and a superb game world (a planet called Adelpha). I played the original Outcast back in the late 1990s on a powerful PC and liked it a lot. Last year I played the Outcast 1.1 which was basically a HD relaunch of the old game. And now with Outcast Second Contact it's basically Outcast 2. Well it's still the same game, but the graphics and the gameplay have been brought from 1999 to 2017 standards. It used to be a Triple-A game back then, and it had no Triple-A budget in 2017 (the new intro-movie is certainly lower budget). Outcast Second Contact is exactly what I hoped for, a 2017 version of Outcast. So let's hope it get successful so that we will get a whole Outcast franchise in the next years. The game world is so unique with it's own language, back story, unique characters and species, it really deserves a lot of recognition. Well done. Full Review »

Visually speaking it is a great remake and large nostalgia factor.

Other aspects are less so, which is not the fault of the remake but the original game I guess. I played that a long time ago and can't remember all the aspects, but I remember the first variants of the remake had control and UI issues. Most of them have been fixed in Second Contact.

The notebook organization is frustrating after some time. Weapon naming is confusing. No quest markers or aids(really old game). Fetch quests across hard to traverse terrains. Regions accessible through several hops at opposite ends of the maps. Non-remastered audio (originals were recorded in low-f only?). Sponge enemies.
