Omori tells one of the most compelling stories I've witnessed in one of the most interesting ways I've seen. While some may be tired of the innocent on the outside dark on the inside trope, I think this game pulls it off in such a unique way that left me in awe. The darkness of this game is perfectly captured and represented in a way that I can best describe as beautiful. The game oozes creativity with fun characters yet still manages to keep the overall dark themes looming over the player up until the end, which keeps me anticipating every new nook and cranny. The music is superb as well. Whether it be the happy go lucky theme as you navigate the overworld, a sense of dread theme that plays as you face the true horrors, the game has the perfect music for almost every scenario it seems. Not to mention the fantastic song that plays during the true ending. Speaking of, multiple routes that each provide something new, one route even being so split off that it can change the entire narrative and direction of the game. This adds so much replayability and exploration to an a game already filled with it. The gameplay, while tedious at times, never feels like it's impeding. For those who dont like turn based or it's gameplay, while it's featured, it never plays too big of a role and tedious grinding was never necessary. There's also a number of optional bosses and areas for those that do enjoy it. Personally, I enjoyed it but thought it was a bit uninspired battle wise. While the emotion system is creative, I feel it never did too much more out of that. Even then, I never found it tedious, and for a game like this you understand you're not coming in for top notch rpg mechanics and gameplay, but for a memorable story, and it succeeds heavily there. Overall, Omori is a creative masterpiece that depicts such dark, yet relatable tones in such a fascinating way that makes it feel so memorable. Any who enjoy psychological horror as a genre will adore this game I feel. The twists and turns and story will leave many attached. Expand

Ultilizing of the advantage of a beautiful and creative art direction that has its meaning, assertive palette of colors, great soundtrack with more than 170 ost thought for each part of the game, builds and elaborates its questions and mysteries with surprising conclusions that culminate in the development and deepening of his protagonist, the game talks to the player, putting inside the character and making you feel what is a post traumatic disorder etc ..., becoming a unique experience.
Its only flaw would be that the screenplay presents a notable lack of connectivity, many of the mysteries and elements inserted don't present, or have very little connection with the main plot, making them things that, despite having a good idea, are avulsive.

Omori is in __my own opinion__ the best indie rpg that there is, while deltarune, and undertale are really shoulder to shoulder with the rating, I do want to say that omori comes out on top, because of how it makes you feel throughout and especially at the end, it takes its time making you fall in love with the characters, all the while slowly unraveling a deeply saddening story of dealing with trauma, and overcoming guilt. And by the end of it you see everything in a new light, making you want to replay to see and understand why everything was the way it is. made by a very small team with basically no gamedev experience, this is incredibly impressive, both storywise, and gameplay wise. Overall, I think the game was worth the wait. And I am off to listen to the OST for the 75th time

In terms of story, this game is a masterpiece that should be experienced by everyone (comfortably). In terms of gameplay, it gets a little slow around the middle, but overall it's still great. I would play this game if there was no gameplay at all. Omori would make a good book.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me make this quick. I love this game and I adore it. I love turn based RPGS and while the battle system could've been expanded upon, I love it. I love the story, art, soundtrack, and the lovable characters. However, people have been complaining about plot holes in a certain area that is towards the end of the game. I want to explain how there AREN'T actually any plot holes and clear up confusion. From this point forward, there will be of course be spoilers. You were warned.

Okay, so I'm pretty sure all the plot holes people are complaining about come from the truth behind Mari's death. When you learn the truth, it comes out that Sunny actually killed Mari, his sister. Basil is there and witnesses the murder, but helps Sunny cover up the death of his sister. After they leave the body hanging from the tree, they leave the scene, getting away with it. Ever since then, they've been living with trauma for four years. Now, this opens a hole in the story.

How did Sunny and Basil get away with it?

So, if you were paying attention during The Truth area of the game, there's something explains how they really did it. After you fight Mari's hanging corpse and crawl inside the tree, you are greeted by a distorted version of Sunny's house. The windows emanate a red light and the family photo is completely covered in the black vines. There is also the dark figure sitting on the couch. If you talk to the figure, you can quickly realize that it's Sunny's mother.

She says: "My only daughter... is gone. And you... you are my only son. I can't... lose you as well."

This line from his mother explains it clearly. After Sunny and Basil hung the body, Sunny's came back home to a traumatic scene. It's unclear if she came home when they were walking away from the scene or she came back when they were both hiding, but it doesn't matter either way. Sunny, himself, explained what happened to his mother and she took it horribly. Sunny's father also heard about it and left his family behind, thinking his own son was a demon. Of course, Sunny's mother had to call the police, but didn't actually tell the truth behind Mari's death. She probably told them that Mari had suicidal thoughts for quite some time and was suffering from severe depression.

But then, why wouldn't the police investigate the scene further?

The reason lies in the area where Sunny and his friends live. The town they live in is literally called Faraway Town. The main park is almost void of people most of the time and the shops in the center of the town are not busy. This is a seriously small town, not a city bustling with thousands of innocent people and criminals. The police in Faraway Town have probably not dealt with anything serious before, heck, the biggest thing they've probably caught people doing is littering. When they were called in to escort a body and were explicitly told by the mother that the victim was suicidal, they completely believed it. They didn't think there was any culprit or anything. They believed that Mari lived with depression and took her own life. And that's it.

SIDE NOTE: To explain the bruises and cuts Mari probably got from falling down the stairs, her mom could've just said that she was hurting herself before she took her life.

I hope I cleared up some of the supposed plot holes for some people. For me, personally, this game tells a tragic story beautifully and is well executed. This game is a solid 10/10 for me.

It would have been a solid 10, this game, if its final twist wasn't so weak. 99% of the game is pure gold, the characters are well written, their dynamics are fabulous and the story is filled with tension and suspense. The black space segment is genius, as well as almost every real world segment.
But with the positives comes the negatives: this game would benefit greatly of the Earthbound and Undertale dialogue philosophy, and I mean by this to put various pieces of dialogue to every NPC (everytime you interact with some object or character they should give at least two pieces of dialogue). It's not that it's a requeriment for every RPG, but this game would have been perfect to that kind of narrative device.
The twist kinda ruins all the story: it's that bad. It lacks, as Aristotle would say, all the verisimilitude the game was building. It's obvious OMOCAT didn't manage to fill that gap on the narrative, a gap that was required to fill for the whole story but really was counterproductive.
The rest of the game is so good I can't give it less than an eight: if you can forgive a bad narrative movement, this game is highly enjoyable and a cute/creepy experience.

But, I enjoyed it so much I didnt pay attention to those problems on my first playthrough. After playing most of the hikkikomori route (I still have bossman hero left god damm) I can say that Sunnys own messed up mind toyed with me and made me feel terrible. Not because it was particularly dark, but because I felt guilty. I felt guilty that I drove Sunny into that state. And I knew what I was doing. Definitely something I will not forget.
I also see some of my all time favourite games in this, which only makes the experience better. The excessive strategy, just like a pokemon game. The compelling deep characters and silent protagonist like UNDERTALE. The dark hidden bits of the story, just like WH.

idk but those were the best 300 pesos ever spent on my switch.

It takes players on a journey through the mind of the protagonist, exploring themes of friendship, trauma, and self-discovery. The game's narrative is filled with twists, turns, and deep character development, keeping players engaged and invested in the outcome. The way Omori gradually unveils the layers of its story, weaving together a complex web of emotions and mysteries, is nothing short of remarkable. The writing is poignant and thought-provoking, delving into dark and introspective themes with subtlety and grace. It's a testament to the game's storytelling prowess that it manages to evoke a wide range of emotions, from joy and laughter to sadness and introspection, leaving a lasting impact on players long after they've completed the game.

Omori's combat mechanics may not be its strongest aspect, but they still offer an enjoyable and strategic experience. The turn-based battles are well-designed, incorporating a unique emotion system that adds depth and strategy to the gameplay. Each character has their own set of skills and abilities, and understanding how to utilize their emotions effectively becomes crucial in defeating enemies. The game encourages experimentation and party synergy, allowing players to discover powerful combinations and strategies. While combat may not be the main focus of Omori, it serves as an engaging complement to the game's narrative and exploration elements, providing moments of challenge and reward.

What truly sets Omori apart is its genius in creating immersive and rich environments, along with well-developed NPCs and party members. The game's mix of hand-drawn and pixel art style is breathtaking, creating a dreamlike and ethereal atmosphere. The environments are meticulously crafted, offering a sense of exploration and discovery as players navigate through various surreal and imaginative locations. The NPCs in Omori are memorable and complex, each with their own struggles and stories to tell. The character development is exceptional, as players gradually uncover the secrets and motivations behind each character, forging deep connections and empathy along the way. The game's attention to detail in both its environments and characters adds depth and immersion to the overall experience, solidifying Omori as a true work of art.

While I have been lucky enough to not lose a loved one to tragedy, Omori still managed to make me feel the despair of losing someone cherished, and the powerless feeling of being able to do nothing to bring them back was replicated perfectly. The game tackles the idea of acceptance and escapism beautifully, and when the credits rolled, I did not move for a while. It is one of those persistent games that follows players even after putting the controller down. I think about it more than I expected to; it creeps in at night before I sleep, and whenever I come across a screenshot or hear the name, something in me just recalls the weight of it immediately. People process loss in completely different ways and at completely different speeds, and Omori never pretends otherwise. What makes it so remarkable is that it does not ask players to have lived through something specific to feel it. It just asks for attention. And with attention, Omori will find something in players to pull on regardless of what their lives look like.

Omori is certainly not for everyone. Someone who values gameplay much higher than storytelling will come away feeling bored and frustrated with the overall experience. However, those who value a game's plot and the emotions that games can elicit will never be able to shake Omori from their headspace. It is a flawed game in many aspects, but I can't help thinking about it throughout my daily life (especially while opening up the spice cabinet), even having finished the game over a month ago. While the entire middle of the game can be frustrating due to its poor design, the third act is well worth everything that comes before it. In the end, everything else faded away, and it all felt worth it.

Having played through OMORI, I’m confident say that it’s an experience I won’t forget. This is a game I wholeheartedly recommend for those that appreciate a good story. With a strong emphasis on catharsis, it has a lot up its sleeves. The cutesy and colorful presentation hides a grim reality and it hits hard. Highly recommended, OMORI is a gem of a game that definitely deserves recognition.
