To all the nice people writing negative reviews. You can skip cut-scenes by pressing F1 . I get that the dialogue pace is slow but don't be unfair to such a great game.

Ah, Okami, the classic game that stars Amaterasu, one of my favourite characters in Marvel vs Capcom 3. This game is visually stunning, has fun gameplay and good music. The main issue is that the opening is very flawed. But overall, Okami is a great game and this re-release improves the visuals even more.

TLDR; Beautiful art style, mechanically unsatisfying, dialogue overkill.

I didn't play the original, but I always loved the art style and couldn't wait to play it. I was sorely disappointed, it's either a bad port or it the game just hasn't aged well. I'm a big fan of Zelda games, and everyone told me if I liked Zelda then I would love Okami. Does everyone remember the owl in ocarina of time, and how much he pissed you off with his excessive dialogue? If I had to go through that every 5 minutes Ocarina of Time would not have been one of my favourite games of all time. From my experience, that's what exactly Okami is.

I had a bad experience with the length of the into like many of the other people who did not like this game. I also disliked the pace of the dialogue. I understand the "press f1 to skip" counter argument, except for the fact that it doesn't tell you that in game.

The thing truly I couldn't abide is the fact that the controls were janky and unsatisfying, and the combat was boring. I like a beautiful art style as much as the next guy, but for me that just can't carry a mechanically unsatisfying game.

Admittedly I only spent 3 or so hours playing the game, but I've got at least 10 games guaranteed to be better in my steam library waiting to be played.

3/10 solely because the art style is fantastic.

This game is just a visual mind trip. A wonderful piece of work that most games can't even compare to. I am truly impressed by the amount of time the designers took to digitally render the UI and the game. Much better than other indie games that I have played.

Sure a nice and smooth 60 fps experience would have helped, but still the game is made to function at 30 frame, animations, sprites and etc, and despite the frame lock the game look absolutely awesome, especially if compared to its ps2 original version.
And regarding the unskippable intro..... cmon people what's wrong with you? do

Ah, Okami. I'd heard great things about this game over the years, but as I don't own a Wii, Xbox or PlayStation I'd not been able to play it. When I saw it was coming out for the PC, via Steam, I was delighted - at last, I'd see what the fuss was about!

As it turns out, it was well worth the wait. While some may moan about the intro, I found it set the scene well and truth be told didn't realise it went on for 18 minutes, or however long it is. After reversing the mouse controls I was soon galloping around Nippon.

The world makes you want to explore and you're frequently rewarded for going round the houses or off the beaten track. Coming from a world with MMOs and games like Skyrim, some things seem very odd, such as the combat system (monsters look like scrolls from afar, then you end up in an arena when you fight them), but I guess that's due to its console origins. In many ways it's similar to RPGs in that you have hit points, mana points (in the form of ink pots), harder enemies as time goes by and a variety of weapons and enhancements to pick up along the way.

The fights themselves are actually better than I thought, as I'd assumed they'd be simple affairs - 20 hours in I'm still finding new monster types and working out how best to deal with them is fun. Over the course of the game you unlock various utilities to be used in combat (via the celestial brush, which allows you to modify the environment), as well as melee weapons.

The graphics are gorgeous, cartoony in style but they fit the Japanese-folklore atmosphere perfectly. When, as often happens, you bring an area back to life the visual flourishes are absolutely enchanting - it feels rewarding in a way that you don't get with other games and (daft to say) it evokes a sense of peace and tranquility which is quite alien with PC gaming! Similarly the "victory howls" which your wolf avatar performs after killing bosses are immensely gratifying. Complimenting this perfectly is the music, which in some cases is so good it's worth just standing around and listening to it (Ryoshima Coast is a case in point).

Gameplay is actually far more varied than I was expecting, happily: whether it's negotiating a vertical maze, digging up turnips or simply racing for the sheer joy of it, there are all sorts of minigames and puzzles to solve. At times it turns quite platformy, but never overwhelmingly so - it's a forgiving game.

By way of variety there are various collectibles to be found, notably 99 beads which give you a "special reward" when found. They tend to pop up in the oddest of places and I'm looking forward to trying to collect them all! I'll have plenty of time to do it too, as the starting areas have things which can't be opened / dug up / exploded or whatever until later in the game, as you have to learn new celestial brush techniques or moves to be able to interact with them.

I'm not sure how much longer it'll take me, but I've a feeling I'm not even halfway through the game yet. For the price it's an absolute steal - pennies an hour in terms of gameplay and wow, it's involving gameplay too. It's a beautiful game and I've found it refreshing, eye-popping at times and a joyful experience all told - I'll be sad when I eventually finish it!

The gameplay style is a mix of action, platform, and puzzle gaming genres, and has been noted by many reviewers to have numerous similarities in overall gameplay style to The Legend of Zelda series,[3] an inspiration that director Hideki Kamiya, a self-proclaimed Zelda fan, has admitted has influenced his general game design.[4] The main story is primarily linear, directed by Amaterasu's guide Issun, though numerous side quests and optional activities allow for players to explore the game world and take the story at their own pace.[5] By completing quests, side quests and small additional activities (such as making trees bloom into life or feeding wild animals), Amaterasu earns Praise, which can then be spent to increase various statistics of the character, such as the amount of health and number of ink wells for Celestial Brush techniques.[6]

Combat is staged in a ghostly virtual arena, and Amaterasu can fight enemies using a combination of weapons, fighting techniques and Brush methods to dispatch the foes.[7] At the end of combat, money (as yen) is rewarded to Amaterasu, with bonuses for completing a battle quickly and without taking damage. The money can be spent on numerous items from merchants across the land, including healing goods, better weapons, tools and key items for completing quests. The money can also be used to buy new combat techniques at dojos throughout the land.[8]

Additionally, rare Demon Fangs can be earned through combat which can be traded for additional, unique items that are beneficial in gameplay but not required to complete the game.[9] Weapons inspired by the Imperial Regalia of Japan (the Reflector, the Rosaries and the Glaive) can be equipped on Amaterasu as either main or sub-weapons (one each), and used in addition to other melee attacks that the player can have Amaterasu learn through the course of the game.[10][11]

The biggest inspiration of this game is from the legend of zelda series; you have an action-platforming foundation with light puzzles and rpg progression that is generally fuelled by fulfilling side quests and collectables. It borrows in more ways than mentioned from a formula that has garnered so much acclaim - but what seperates it is the watercolour painting visual style of the environment, which you then interact with by using drawn patterns within the game. The characters and story are lovable, and exploring the world feels so purposeful and rewarding because you are rewarded both visually and economically for restoring the landscape back to life. The game suffers occasionally from camera issues that can make it uncomfortable to play. Many people also reference the opening cutscene and future dialogue as tedious. I would like to say that all text and cutscenes can be skipped/sped up, and even if you couldn't skip that cutscene, I would argue you don't have much patience if you can't wait through 8-9 minutes for it to end. most of the characters in the game are so quirky and likeable that you won't want to skip much if any of it. Speaking of the game itself: It's an action RPG where you play as a wolf, on a mission to stop evil forces that will put the world in darkness.

The game's mechanics stand out, because, as it is made to look like a painting, and someone telling the story, you can "stop" the game, to "draw" on opponents, giving various effects such as cuts, stuns, bombs and etc.

The game is good but I know it's not for everyone, check out some videos, and if you're interested, give it a try.

The only downside is that it's made for the story to be as important as the game mechanics, so there really are a lot of lines, and none of them can be skipped.
