  1. You won’t find horror that creeps under your skin here, like you would in "Fatal Frame 2" or "Kuon" for example, but you will find a game with great and spooky atmosphere and a disturbing story.
  2. The first teen survival horror game to date, and a game that is one of the creepiest on the market today and one that will keep you on the edge of your seat with it’s great sound effects, solid graphics, amazing black aura effect, and some truly disturbing faceless creatures.

Obscure rewards innovation over frenzy, and it seems only fair to do the same in return. [Dec 2004, p.94]

ObsCure's smell of teen spirit freshens up a staid and stodgy genre. [July 2005, p.62]

There's no better fodder for the boneheaded premise of old-school RE... than the high school slasher flick, and ObsCure serves it up right. [May 2005, p.50]
  6. Obscure doesn’t attempt to do anything different. Hydravision is comfortable with crafting a respectable survival horror game and Obscure fits that profile well.
  7. It’s very much like a video game equivalent of the teen-horror genre - whilst it does make you jump in places, it won’t give you nightmares.
  8. The fact that the characters are so annoying makes it quite enjoyable to see them meet their makers, but it's wise to protect them for as long as possible.
  9. It does some new things that should've been improved upon a long time ago, and it's the only game on the market right now that offers double-player monster-blasting action with this kind of setting, but you might find that it's just too hard, too annoying or too rough-edged to hold your interest.

A solid survival horror game that takes the classic formula and adds a couple of cool innovations. It's more of an upgrade than an evolution, but the American high school setting feels fresh and is very well put together, with smooth graphics, a nice balance of shooting and exploration and a story that, while very generic, just about holds your attention.
  11. The story line is interesting but it’s not something that you haven’t seen in a horror film already. Obscure will be more than enough for gamers looking for their next scare, but will leave other gamers looking for more.

The graphics are purty, the control is decent, the voice acting isn't half bad, and the story's even pretty good. And two player co-op, come on! What more do you people want?
  13. While this textbook copy of the Capcom classic is a competent regurgitation of the genre's clichés, your patience will be tested by déjà vu from the moment that the first monster bursts out of the walls.

It's sad to see the interesting features such as light versus dark and co-op play get shunted to the sidelines in favor of the same stuff we've been experiencing for years.

Many points where the puzzle design, level layout and management of the teens' special skills are just plain clumsy and almost unusable. [June 2005, p.127]
  16. From the buggy control schemes to the monotonous gameplay, any gamer will be left with much to be desired.

Aside from the dynamic object interaction and music, the graphics and gameplay made me feel like I was back in high school, playing "Resident Evil 2" after doing my homework. But that was then, and this is now, and Obscure just doesn't make the grade.

Horror muted by brevity and flat atmosphere... Imitating teen-horror movies is a novel idea, but duplicating their running time and feeble horror leaves the game wanting. [Nov 2004, p.106]
  19. Computer Gaming World

Frightful fun is ultimately obscured by an even more frightful co-op camera. [Aug 2005, p.88]

Despite some appealing graphics, a few compelling moments, and a budget price tag, the reasons to buy Obscure remain...well, you know. [July 2005, p.55]
  21. Dated visuals, bad voice acting and an impossible control scheme. Best to stick with the original game.

The comparisons to Resident Evil are almost unavoidable when reviewing Obscure, as they're essentially the same game. Same fixed cameraThe comparisons to Resident Evil are almost unavoidable when reviewing Obscure, as they're essentially the same game. Same fixed camera angles (that wasn't a compliment, by the way), similar atmosphere, similarly atrocious dialogue writing, a few decent scares and the same "stand still and shoot" game play. A few no-brainer puzzles are scattered around, mostly of the "find the lever somewhere and return it to the broken switch" variety. The voice acting is spotty, but at least its performed by an American cast. Most of the unintentionally humorous dialogue comes from Stanley, the "street-wise" kid who talks like Eminem's retarded brother. Not bad, despite what you might've read in the ruthlessly negative critical reviews, but well short of great also. SIDE NOTE - Machines running WIndows Vista and above cannot play this without the no-dvd crack due to AWFUL StarForce anti-piracy software. May everyone at StarForce suck a big one for making games unplayable!!!! Full Review »
