Nightmare of Decay knows exactly what it wants to be, ticking off the list of necessary survival horror requirements with ease; it’s simply a fabulous slice of retro-themed action-horror.

To be honest, I bought this game on a whim thinking its homage to classic survival-horror and deliberate Playstation 2-era graphics would coalesce into a somewhat janky indie experience with a lot of heart but little technical prowess. I’m happy to be proven wrong as Nightmare of Decay scratched that itch from horror games of my youth in a way that is just modern enough to feel good but not so updated that it loses its nostalgic flavor. It lacks the length of classic horror games as it only clocks in at about 3 hours, but it still feels complete. People looking for a quick and clever trip down survival-horror memory lane likely won’t be disappointed.

The gameplay satisfies and the simplicity of the experience is a strong point. If we add to this the replayability offered by the extra modes, it is undeniable that this is a little gem not to be missed, thanks to the extremely low price.

Great little game for what it is! I really enjoyed playing it and finding all the easter eggs.

Gameplay is an older style, slow and at times a little repetitive. Atmosphere is good and gun play decent enough. Feels nostalgic. Quite short though which is a shame. Well worth it on special. This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. I review games with all games starting at 5/10 (Average) and then deduct/add for negatives and positives:

    Overall Thoughts:

Enjoyed the game a lot in places, and didn't enjoy a few sequences, combat was passable, but never felt like I was in full control of the character, which I admit might be the point. I loved the selection of weapons, and enjoyed some of the optional challenges in the game. The references aren't too heavy handed, except in one section which was deserving of a good (positive) laugh. The graphics and sound worked well together and parts of the game did feel quite oppressive and spooky. The story itself while interesting at the start, basically is just there to start the game and has no real resolution. All in all a really impressive indie title with some great references to other classic games.

    Positives:

    + Horror tropes used well
    + Enjoyed the level design
    + Enjoyed the retro graphics
+ Sound added to the experience and atmosphere
+ Enjoyed all the references, Silent Hill Health drinks, the classic Zombie who turns to face character in the cinematic, a pipe wielding legend, and that thing in that cave.
+ 2 Extra Game modes, horde and procedural generated dungeon
+ Manor part of the house felt really well made and intricate

    +7

    Negatives:

-Wanted to know more about the lore, about outside of the dream
-Did not enjoy the Knights boss fights
--Combat was at times tedious and slow, sprint speed was very slow, and combat felt like a DPS race constantly
-Dungeon part of the house felt a little more rushed and enemy spam heavy
