Graphically the game is definitely mediocre. That being said, it is good enough to deliver a realistic enough basketball simulation. It could have been better to enhance the experience, but they are good enough to not hinder it.

The soundtrack of the game consists of real songs from several notable artists, including The Weekend, Jack Harlow, Juice WRLD, and Pop Smoke. While the soundtrack has some absolute bangers in there, simply using songs from major artists does not make for an impressive soundtrack design.

Besides the classic basketball games that we can play with or against our buddies, the game also offers a MyCareer mode, which comes with a short story of our own character going through their NBA career. Honestly, I really enjoyed the story Visual Concepts delivered with this title. The only issue with it is the length, as the story only really happens before we actually enter the NBA.

Considering this is a sports simulation game it's not expected to have massive amounts of content. You can play as any of the teams in the NBA and WNBA against other players or AI. Some of the more interesting modes available in the game are MyCareer, MyTeam and MyGM.

In general, the controls are good, they are responsive and feel smooth. Personally, I felt that sometimes the character felt a little too heavy and would get stuck to the other players, and the controls sometimes took input with a slight delay.

The gameplay is what you'd expect a sports simulation game to be. You play basketball, that's it. The only variety in the gameplay only really comes in the MyTeam and MyGM game modes, as instead of just playing you also do a lot of managing, which introduces a more strategic look for the game.

To summarise I'd like to mention that this is the first NBA game I've played and it's one of the main reasons why I'm a big basketball fan today! I've seen that most of the negative points made by other players were statements that this is basically a copy and paste of the previous title, which is something to consider if you own NBA 2K20. I'd also like to mention that I haven't experienced any major bugs in the game, which was another major complaint people made.

All in all, NBA 2K21 still holds the bar, but there is very little incentive to switch to this version if you had your fill of 2K20, unless you’re a dedicated fan of MyTeam.

For the players who have invested heavily both time and money on a previous iteration, NBA2K21 has nothing new to offer. The new MyCareer story and the necessary roster updates would not justify a purchase at its full price. Our grade refers to the technical aspects of the game, but we are highly critical on how the series have devolved into a microtransactions Pay2Progress model.

An overall extremely well-made and enjoyable basketball game with a variety of modes and teams. That does not stop NBA 2K21 from sabotaging itself through a vast number of microtransactions that become necessary to progress in the My Team and My Career modes.
