Monster Hunter Wilds delivers superb action, customization, visuals and cutscenes and is certainly still king of its kind. It might however not please you if you're looking for an old-school hunting experience as this game leans much more into the newcomer side of the audience. There's handholding, a bit too much story going on and some monsters might feel underpowered against our ever-improving arsenal. Great game overall, hopefully it'll be better adjusted with TUs and a likely master rank expansion. [Recommended]

And for the most part, the game performed great. I experienced little to no frame drops on PC, even if lowering the texture quality to medium makes the game look less than ideal. Character models specifically look a bit muddy, and pop-ins are bound to happen. There were a few times my camera freaked out, which caused random triangles to pop up in the periphery of my screen if I swiveled my camera a bit too close to a wall. But I doubt most players are diving into Monster Hunter Wilds for the character creator, which is no Dragon’s Dogma 2 and does a serviceable job, or to scrutinize every little detail in the zones or on the monsters themselves. That said, the game was stable, and sometimes that’s all you can really ask for in something as ambitious as Monster Hunter Wilds.
  3. Wilds is once again a game of hunger and hunting, self-providing, and grinding your nights away against the whetstone of loot. Therein lies both the appeal and danger of Monster Hunter games. They are stuffed with compelling completionist catnip, yet wrapped in a philosophy of busywork. You are killing a very cool monster to get better gloves so you can kill another cool monster for more gloves. I mean, yes, that is video games writ large. And it keeps me sustained on the hamster wheel for a while. I too desire a fashionable suit for my intolerable cat.

Monster Hunter Wilds sands off a lot of the edges from the series, and while I was concerned that this could leave the game feeling frictionless and uninspiring, the addition of a really engaging story, some of the coolest monsters I’ve seen in any game, and the new systems all combine to make it just pure fun. It’s good for newcomers because of all the helpful parts, but veterans will be overjoyed with everything that comes after the credits, not to mention the wonders of having two weapons easily accessible. Monster Hunter Wilds is probably going to be my game of the year, and I’d be shocked if that’s not the case for a lot of other people too. [Exemplary]
