Visually decent but the game falls far short in the entertainment category. With repetitive fights topped with some of the worst controls ever to grace the gaming world, any difficulty above the easiest becomes nothing more than a chore. Boss animations. There will be a point when you get so annoyed and tired from the unskippable animations of enemies making cringe statements. It was cool the first three hours but then it will just waste the time.

The story is luckily entertaining that until the end, where everything feels so rushy. It's as if they expect the players to be LOTR experts. It looks like they just skipped some major stories to explain the upcoming events. I know that the game is referencing to the film series but also it would be helpful if they just kept the same pace and not make the ending look like an unfinished game. Can't be that hard if you just recycle most things from the previous game, right? Horrible finish of the main character's story

It's still a gripe of mine that time passes in all regions not just the one you are in. This has resulted in me not having control/being able to help in missions. Some of my fave orcs get killed.

And the big one: P2W crates. Are they required? Not necessarily. Are they needed? Kinda, unless you farm like a mofo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an example why piracy will continue to grow. The story is fine, might get repetitive at some point but I was having fun till that happened. However, the game lags, freezes, sometimes also crashes. Loading a fortress defence takes about 5-10 minutes each time, while assigning a captain for a slot freezes the game for another 2-4 minutes for every 6 or 7 slots. As for the gameplay, some perks such as "no chance" or "adapted" are unfun to play against. Who the hell thought that if you die during a fortress defence, it is a loss already? It means that your captains automatically flee or won't fight anymore? A pity. Defending it is such a mess anyways, if your captains die in a middle of enemies, you have no chance to revive them because there is no way to target them, system will target anyone but him. But at least we have microtransactions in a 60$ game :D Expand

I don't know what game the "journalists" played but this game is god awful. It is full of repetitive tasks to do all over the map, the combat attempts to be like Arkham Knight but is more like Assassins Creed Syndacate, but it doesn't have a good story like either of those games. This game feels like it was designed from the top down to encourage you to use the loot crates and purchase items with real money. This isn't even a game. It's gambling with real money for in game items disguised as a Lord or the Rings game. This is not a detail oriented or well designed game. It's some mechanics with 6 different types of tasks repeated and scattered across a cheap lazily designed open world. The graphics are not pretty to look at, the orcs look childish and stupid, not scary at all. The combat is not challenging and it's very repetitive. The main quests are not interesting at all. Pretty much a blur of hyperbole. The reason that people are liking this game is because it's addictive, because it was designed to be addictive from the ground up. It is in no objective way a good game. I would go as far to say that it's not really a video game. It's a gambling machine. Expand

I'm sorry but the place of microtransactions is to add in extra optional advantages or aesthetic customization. This game does a mighty fine job capturing the Lord of the Rings lore and, even though some liberties were taken with Shelob, it technically did not break the Middle Earth fiction so, fly high. It was enjoyable and delivered on much of the premise of the first game (once you clear a lengthy opening mission set) but then, why the zero rating?

I cannot in good conscious call this a game.

I cannot in good conscious call this a game. It is an EA cash grab and we cannot, as gamers, allow this to become the norm. Lootboxes that provide anything that is not merely cosmetic and require real world money (yes require because the actual time you'll need to log to win what youre looking for is off the chain) are always going to get an instant zero from me.

You would've thought Warner Bros. might have learned a lesson with their spectacularly bad Arkham Knight launch but no. We get a triple whammy of scumminess this year with them first trying to sell the memory of a dead developer as paid DLC. Then the Developers come out and tell everyone you may never even have to use the Lootboxes or buy using Microtransactions to enjoy the game and it's only there for people 'who don't have time to play the game'. And the icing on the cake is the Story being locked behind a paywall.

To think that their "reviews" of these games carries any weight is a joke, the only weight involved is the weight of the money being dropped on their desks.

This game sacrifices gameplay and integrity for Microtransactions, and to say it doesn't is to blatantly lie to the faces of the people. Act 4 is a massive grind, purely to try to force the player to purchase their gambling boxes, coming from a full-price """Triple-A""" video game with massive marketing, multiple overpriced editions, sponsorship deals, and god knows what else, but none of that was enough money for WB.

But hey, I suppose all that extra dosh came in handy when it came to paying off the "Critics".

The new captain system separates captains into classes, such as destroyer, tank and assassin. These classes have been implemented in an utterly terrible way, and contribute to most of the captains feeling remarkably similar. Rather than getting a few worthless captains and a few diamonds in the rough which truly stand out as adversaries, the class system has made them all fit into neat, sameish categories. No longer will you have a Prak Jaws, instead you will have a Prak Jaws template which you will see ad-nauseam. Traits seem to have heavy bias, with almost every captain having some kind of grenade attack. A suspicious choice, considering the ability to purchase more interesting orks with real life cash.

Beyond that, there are several aspects of the game which have regressed from the predecessor. The movement system is AWFUL. Dodgerolls frequently stick you to the spot and force you to dance to your death, and area of effect attacks cannot be dodged with the dodge button, as the animation is too slow and you will be stuck in the field of fire regardless. Combat often freezes, with Tallion constantly reaching for his blade instead of making a strike, allowing enemies to get in free shots. The fluid, though sometimes flawed movement of the prequel has been completely ruined; more often than not, you are going to flip in the opposite direction you intended, jump off of things to your death, and get stuck on corners whilst trying to make an escape, because the game does not recognise that you wish to jump off. The camera frequently gets stuck on objects and zooms in on inconsequential things, usually getting you killed in the process. Combat is much harder this time, which would be a welcome change had everything else not worked against it.

There are several parts in the game very, very clearly designed for microtransactions. Story missions frequently feature enemies drastically above your level, and often also have essential characters you cannot let die. You are given a choice of protecting the character and getting blindsighted by a captain nearly twice your strength, fighting the captain and letting the character get killed, losing in the process, grinding until the game is no longer fun so you can match him, or buying an upgrade for yourself. Oh yes, this game is FULL of grind. The prior game had its flaws with its incredibly low difficulty, barring special circumstances, but even that was preferable to the leveling system in this.

If you can ignore these flaws, the game its self is not bad. It's playable, it can be nicely challenging in the right circumstances, but given the massive amount of microtransactions, I can only believe that these flawed new systems are put in to drive you to buy your way out of them. What a disgusting, dishonest and manipulative business practice. Do not buy.

Great game, but loot boxes? Microtransactions? Great 0 for Warner Bros!!! Do not buy this game now. Wait till it will be cheap, we must show them what we think about that.

One word: micro transactions which involve not only looks. Disgusting practise. Don't buy this rubbish. If you do you're part of the problem and you're supporting bad unethical practices in video gaming.

This could have been a 9/10 game. Completely marred by a designed in grind to try to force the consumer to purchase loot crates. Absolutely unacceptable failure of a game for this reason.

I just finished the game, and this is a soulless piece of junk. The story sucks, it does not follow the tolkien books or movies, the combat i repetitive (you can just mash 1 button the hole time and win every fight) the game tells you every time how to beat the enemy in every fight with helpboxses and messages, it requires you to buy lootboxes for the last 25% of the game, because theI just finished the game, and this is a soulless piece of junk. When 2 orcs have a fight in the pit the AI is so stupid that most of the time the units just stands there and dies. And you have to lvl up, and the only thing you can do is buying more lootboxes. So when you have paid 60 euro game, you have to add at least 20 more euro to finish the game. It is like they are taking a piss in your face when you are halfway in the game. And the game before that is not even enjoyable. It is the same assassin's creeds farming quest that says every time; go there and kill 5 guys, good job, now go here and kill 7 guys in the same way, good job, now you lvl up. And so it continues the hole game, until the microtransaction part. If you think it is weird that Critic Reviews are so much higher then the User score it is because they are to afraid to piss of EA with their bad game. Because it is. This game does not deserve any score better then it gets right now. And it comes with a lot of bugs and game crashes. In almost every mission there is some form of problem. If you know whats good for you, you spend youre cash on something good instead of this bullocks game. Expand

The worst money making I have seen in a Triple-A game so far: first charging 60 dollars for the game, then demanding microtransactions to see the end of the game. Almost impossible to beat the game without buying better warchiefs and captains. Hate this game right now. The beginning was good but this policy of charging more money to see the end is simply a shame!

Get the loot boxes and microtransactions out of our games! We don't need them. This game would have been good if not for your evil business practices. Enough of this!

I really wanted this game but I can no longer support the current business model of micro-transactions and look boxes in paid games anymore so I will not be buying this game and supporting the publisher. A clear message must be sent that this is no longer acceptable.

WB games shameless business practice :
    1) microtransactions in a single player game
    2) gambling via Loot Cases (great for the kids !!)
    3) pay to winskip
    4) preorder DLC

A huge game that, despite of the quality of the fight and the delight of the Orb, offers paradoxically very small. It's not a failure, but we were expecting more. [Issue#279]

Nemesis is a one-hit wonder of a mechanic. Everything else in Middle-earth is mediocre at best, but Nemesis makes it all worthwhile, since every playthrough is truly unique – a feature none of its triple-A competitors can offer. [Issue#225, p.38]

A lot of people were upset to find out that Shadow of War has loot boxes, and they are kind of annoying. Unfortunately, loot boxes is the least of its problems.
