Game lost the Metal Gear charm by making the story nonexistent. If by the time you come in its 5th main game and still complaining that its a movie then you better off try another game series. Going into the game expecting the twists and turns of previous iterations left me wanting. What more when it was discovering there's an act unfinished within the game.

Metal Gear entrance to the open world genre was amazing. Controls and camera is far far better than what was before. Although the arrival of Quiet+Silencer Sniper combo cheesed a lot of missions.

Mission system is flawed. I loathe the mechanics of time being the most weighted aspect when rating the mission. Gets the fun out of scoping, position and slowly removing all obstacles when time is all that matters.

I will treasure this game since instead of opening metal gear into a whole new world, it became its swan song.

Thanks Kojima and Konami. both you might be crap working together but at least you release this gem of a series.

It isn’t easy to assign this evaluation to MGS V.
But, even if the game is playable, with a good plot, it has the biggest problem a game can ever have: it isn’t complete.
This is clearly an unfinished project. I read it was planned to be 5 chapters long: it can’t even conclude the 2nd with a proper ending.
A game which could be a masterpiece, ruined like this. Pathetic

Phantom Pain should be getting a 10, but the ridiculous mobile game mechanics and stupidly long timers (3 real world days for an assault rifle or 6 days for a battle dress) are truly shameful. This should never be allowed on a $60 game. The PC port's controls are also poorly implemented. I remember manning an AA gun instead of extracting it so many times because the contextual controls were so bad. Also add to this the Perfect Stealth and Subsistence missions, which are missions you already completed BUT HAVE TO REPEAT on these modes, is a big waste of time. I finished all the missions and side missions and I found these modes to be unnecessary at best and a big waste of time at worst. I like the idea of you capturing troops and putting them on your base but they were too generic and had no personality and character whatsoever. They just became names and stats on a spreadsheet.

Now that's out of the way, the gameplay is great. The weapon customizations are very nice and the graphics are spot on. No crashes for me in Windows 7 and the game is very stable with very few bugs, apart from the annoying early level troops "Silent Basilisk" and others being low level and you cannot dismiss them. Which is very bad for leveling up your FOBs. The story could be better as there are many plot holes, but it is long and has plenty of substance. The plot is silly at times and the fake gun names are annoying. I can't imagine a bunch of kids outsmarting Miller, Ocelot and the Boss. Really? That's just plain dumb. Emmerich is also an annoying self-righteous cuck. It doesn't fit his character and was poorly executed. Additionally, why do I need to extract myself via helicopter when I have a fulton or a portal extraction device? Why can't big boss just fulton or portal himself back home? The tapes are good to listen to but still left many holes. I think Kojima did this game justice, but Konami ruined it with all of these mobile game mechanics. I don't like Hideo Kojima's decision to drop David Hayter. Overall, this is a great game, but it has many issues that may annoy you. I like Kojima and I want to give this a higher score but I think fanboyism ruins everything it touches. 7/10.

a great game, allot of content gameplay wise.
but pretty much half the story is missing/cut.
the game feels incomplete and the missing scenes on the collectors disc proves that.
still a good game if you want to do some infiltration gameplay and build/manage your motherbase.

Base building, collecting plants and resources, cartoon-like meteo baloon for rescuing poor animals and a total lack of story (apart from prologue) is not what I was expecting from Metal Gear Solid... This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game is painful in the sense that it has so much potential and it is actually a let down.

you will get stuck various times either in gameplay doubts, missions, controls etc and each time you will have to go online to search if there is a way to a particular thing fast.

for eg. it was taking a horrible amount of time to ride form one mission place to another and it was after i completed 80 % of the game that i read about the option in the main game menu to go to the aerial command center and then to a mission area directly.

also the story is ridiculous and try hard as i may , i did not buy it.

main problem is that the story is not knitted together , there is virtually no end mission and boss battle. it will abruptly end. cutscenes i dont mind if the story is good .

why i was mainly following up n th game is because it is an excellent port to pc. dragon age should learn form them ..

graphics are beautiful. controls even though are based on PS are superb on pc and individually the missions are very interesting.

    so overall..

    story 2/10
    graphics 8/10
    characterization 6/10
    port 8/10
    fun 7/10

i wil give the biggest tips now. and i do recommend the game playing with these tips.
    1. soon you wil realize that you have to waste a lot of time riding a horse or chopper to mission areas. just go the gam emenu and click on go to ACC.

    2. develop the STUN capable weapons like riot smg and the sniper rifle. they are the non lethal weapons.

    3. have quiet as a buddy. in missions where you have to deal with mist units .

    4. there are total 46 missions only and game progress iwill show 45 to 50% ..

    5. after that lot repeat missions will get added of already completed missions but in higher difficulty.

overall u can enjoy.. but no proper ending is a big letdown

Even though these repeated missions are altered a bit to make them more difficult than the original ones, it doesn't make a great difference and it feels lazy. The nth installment of Hideo Kojima's series about stealth extraordinaire Venom Snake, aka Big Boss, and his adventures to restore the Diamond Dogs back to glory and bring revenge to those who did them wrong, inside one of the deepest gameplay systems incorporated in a video game

    PROS:
    - Excellent, crisp graphics and the wide, open-ended level design of the many outposts and bases of Afghanistan and Africa, allowing for a ton of infiltration strategies (and high variety for the game's pretty repetitive objectives) for the sneaky in all of us, which unfortunately you'll seldom see in all its glory as nighttime proves to be a big helping hand in successful infiltrations, though the open-world design of the map with wide-open spaces of virtual nothingness other than the occasional goat herd leave something to be desired
    - The immensely deep and downright mind-boggling gameplay elements incorporated in the game, both the obvious and extremely subtle ones, mastering and making the most of which would probably be impossible other than for Kojima himself, such as the fully realized Mother Base management, the wide variety of tools, weapons and tricks for outpost infiltrations, hidden effects of every player action, hidden controls, hidden cutscenes and more
    - The intelligent and deeply challenging enemy AI that realistically acts to your actions, effectively bumming you out with each poorly executed infiltration efforts (though at times, they walk right past your position with no regard whatsoever), which also delivers technical dialogue that doesn't feel repetitive
    - The fact that enemies adopt to your favorite strategies of ass-kicking, forcing utilization of all techniques under your arsenal, as that when you keep scoring headshots, enemies will start wearing headgear, or night-vision goggles when you keep infiltrating at night, or body armor when you keep shooting them on their torsos, or more spotlights when you keep infiltrating at night
    - The massive arsenal of weapons and tools at your disposal, more than half of which you'll never get to use, notably the versatile cardboard box, though most are dedicated for an all-out Rambo style of play, which for a stealth game does pretty well
    - The extremely cinematic, well-made and oftentimes epic cutscenes, basically if Inarittu's 'Birdman' was a crazy action flick
    - The excellent and way above par recreation and of the cast's faces and bodies in the game
    - The massive number of missions and side missions to be undertaken, which can get repetitive in their objectives but the tons of gameplay elements incorporated provide high variety, providing tons of hours of fun, extremely tense and exciting (and also frustrating) gameplay
    - The game's sheer attention to detail that's almost, if not beyond GTA level deep, which you won't probably appreciate if not for a YouTuber who discovered it first
    - Mother Base's incredibly intricate design, which unfortunately has little to no function at all for much of the offline campaign, and its ridiculously faithful population of kidnapped soldiers
    - That final boss fight of the first chapter
    - The spectacular (and incredibly lengthy) prologue section, which proves Kojima to be the master of cinematic games and that soldiers in Snake's world are hilariously dumb to figure out that two clean bodies against a pack of dead, mangled ones might be... I don't know, still alive?

    CONS:
    - The annoying tendency of Big Boss to get stuck in tight pathways and tables and walls as he grabs cover when running into walls or railings
    - The rather unfair and unexplained grading system, seemingly throwing you Bs when you know to your very heart that you deserve an S, or when you did so poorly in one mission and yet you got an S
    - Any mission written by Hideo Kojima with a major boss on it, be it that giant robot or the Man on Fire or the Skulls that break the game from being an awesome strategic infiltration game to full blown supernatural hitman, overcoming which transcends frustration with you having absolutely no idea on how to beat those annoying bosses (though, thankfully, they abide by predictable attack patterns)
    - Chapter 2, which forces replays of missions from the first one with higher difficulty and places little to no value in the story's continuation, worsened by the fact that much of the new story missions are absolutely mediocre, making "Race" much of an unnecessary padding to the already lengthy campaign and ends the game in a very unsatisfying manner
    - Big Boss' sheer lack of dialogue for much of the key moments of the campaign, particularly during his pivotal meeting with Skull Face
    - Much of the key story content is concentrated in boring (but still well delivered) cassette tapes instead of even short cut-scenes, when the developers still had time making that massively cringe worthy scene with Quiet and Snake playing in the rain like cute little lovers
    - Objectives get repetitive over time

The graphics also look great, bringing a really good looking environment, not being absurdely hardware taxing even on 4K. Not much to talk about environmental soundtrack, 'cause it's almost absent (and it should), but the songs contained in the tapes found in the enemy outposts makes it one of the best 80's licensed sountrack.
Talking about environment, here comes the bad stuff. It's a desert, i know, but things start to get absurdely repetitive (as you would expect from a place reduced to sand and rocks). There are hundreds of missions, counting the main quest and side quests, but dozens are going to happen in the same outpost over and over again. You'll kill enemies, rescue prisioners, translators, gather enemy intelligence and ever weapon engineering project in the same place. But you'll have to do each mission at a time, 'cause you'll never know all that stuff was already there before. If you're a completionist, like me, stay away from this game, 'cause it'll get frustrating.
Otherwise, it's MGS all the way: absurd military equipment (not a bad thing, it's the most fun of the game), even more absurd cold war based story, fanatic subordinates and lots of action cliché. If you're a Metal Gear franchise fan, this is going to be the best game of 2015 for you.

We've learned that he can't do a checkpoint or base. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was waiting. The more she appeared not only on the console from Sony. The prequel Ground Zeroes gave a good seed. We've been getting a typical representative games for srubaniya money on the popularity of the franchise. Our expectations, scandal Kojima with Konami resulted in an overestimation of both users and the press.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain begins with a beautiful prologue. Hideo kojima is directing great videos. All the movies in the game is executed perfectly. After the prologue the expectations of the user on top, but then starts grindilka long hours in 100 (it at whom as). After a brilliant prologue and maybe the first mission to rescue Miller, begins an aimless romp in the sandbox. Many pointless and uninteresting additional missions diluted the plot. But the story missions sometimes are neither setting nor plot development. Rollers we all will indulge rarely. Buying this game you agree not to plot an adventure, not to play the movie with long rollers, and at long romp in the open world. The situation worsens more and that this open world (Afghanistan and Africa) completely empty and completely hostile. There is nothing but empty spaces and enemy bases.

The game is really good. This is the best of STEL action in an open world! You have many opportunities to perform tasks. It is a pity that if you go through the game quietly, the arsenate will be only a tranquiliser gun. The lethal Arsenal of weapons is very extensive. Various gadgets are also set. With them, the game becomes infinitely replayable sandbox. Also, you have 4 partners: horse, cute dog, dog, d-walker, and sexy sniper Quiet. Each of the companions useful in their own way: with the horse's help you'll overcome the game miles, the dog will mark enemies and kill them, d-walker is generally a mini tank, a Quiet is to eliminate targets from afar.

Those who will play Phantom Pain for the sake of the plot and stunning commercials will be disappointed. This game is about gameplay. Despite the fact that the story missions in the game a lot (50 pieces), but most can be written in extra, since there won't be anything interesting. They themselves do a few story missions are really good and are accompanied by stunning videos. But those missions are few (not more than 15, I think). Most of the story details we learn by listening to tapes, which is too much.

In addition to performing the repetitive missions in the open world, we will equip our database (from people to animals). It's not very exciting, and extremely repetativly process.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, unfortunately, does not deserve all these great ratings and positive reviews. This is the best prohodnyak. Go and forget. If you want to re-again, you would have to do all of these monotonous effects, to get to the plot. The game is like this not because of Kojima. It is already clear that Konami just welded on the famous brand. Kojima can understand. It is impossible to force to make a good creative product. And the story he had to suck from a finger, so at least something was. However, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain remains the best stealth action game in an open world. If you want to perform monotonous missions and play with the local sandbox, the game for you. Once the game you need to enjoy rare clips and great replayability sandbox.

Great Graphics with no lag at all.
Overall the game works pretty well, no real bugs.

    Con:
    Repetitive repetitive repetitive.
The concept of basically being forced to extract people totally disturbs the stealth part for me!
Range of some weapons seem pretty low.
    Story?
taking cover has a kinda weird mechanic.
controls on pc is badly ported.

It may be a massive disappointment as a metal gear game, but damn it I still loved it. The gameplay was just so good, with such variety in approaches, and as convoluted as the story was I still liked it. It did just as the name said, and left the series with phantom pain.

Metal Gear Solid V is, hands down, the best stealth game currently.
    The bad:
    * Ocelot: Lacks everything that made Ocelot, OCELOT. He's just a regular guy.
    * The ending: Didn't like to be honest, the missions before the ending are bloody gorgeous, but the ending. Not really.
    * Main missions as repetitions of previous missions? Terrible.
    * It's really easy.

    The really good:
    Everything else.

Cons: Kiefer Sutherland as Snake, boring opening, repetitive missions, empty open world, bullet-sponge bosses, unfinished ending, lack of story, bad characters and script, no punishment for being detected, bad level design, microtransactions

It's a pity that the game feels kind of unfinished because of the repeated missions (with some difficulty changes) during the second half of the game. It doesn't help either the fact that the story is a bit incomplete and, despite having an ending that emotionally connects to the fans, there are some missing connections with the rest of the games.

Of course you can go in guns blazing but most of the time this won't work cause the npc's are really strong when they are in full allert/ fight mode.

The graphics are gorgeous and the the prologue is one of the best prolugue's I've ever seen in a video game.

    Con's:
As I said earlier the amount of storyline is not that big. Also it does sometimes feel like the developers couldn't pay snake's voice actor enough so they had to cut the amount of lines his character has.

But, and this is what i think gives a Metal Gear it's credit is the lack of a well directed story: Metal Gear V is in some ways making the player disconnect of the main story, dealing with non-interesting side-quests, alternating with some epic moments on the story.

Graphically the game is gorgeous. The world is beautifully created, and the fauna makes it even more interesting to explore. One bad aspect of the game is that the world is, in some moments, empty. There are only soldiers, not a simple civil basement, everything is about enemies bases, and nothing else. No interaction with any npc, no interaction apart of some videos with the "allies" you have.

This is why, given the chance to score the game, i decided to give it a 7. Good graphics, soundtrack, fighting/shooting style. Correct story for a Metal Gear (very far away from what we saw on the 4 previous main games), but very bad connected. This is not what a Metal Gear game should be.

The FOX Engine works great on all next-gen platforms. I played the PS4 and this PC versions. Between both versions more than 200 hs. Still playing both for whiiiiiiiiiiiiilee!
    - The main advantage of this PC version is the lighting. Some shaders respond better to specular maps. The texture work between PS4 and PC at least looks kind of the same range. There're some critical closeups to textures like some Diamond Dogs logos and Quiet sniper riffle that looks awful on both. But aside that the game looks outstanding and runs great even on "Borderless Fullscreen" mode ;) It had some stuttering issues and problems with alpha maps of particles during day one but they are solved.
    - The game adapts to your gameplay style. It changes the experience every time you replay a mission.

A beautiful open world/open base stealth game that you can play to the style you see fit. I love open world games, I truly do. This could be the first game that I consider the open world to affect in a bad way. It's a long game; the side missions often feel repetitive due to the use of the open world. You can take down a base for a side mission, fly back to base and then get another side mission at that exact same base. Great for making money but I had to play in doses. Clear side missions, do a story mission, go play something else. Come back. rinse and repeat.
After finishing the game I had to go online and look at articles and other reviews to see if other felt the same way I did. Its unfinished. Reasons being because of all the problems they had towards the end of development. I also hear people say its supposed to be this way. Its a Metal Gear Solid game? Other then the story parts that never wrapped up, the meaning behind scenes are emotional and philosophical in different layers. Perfectly blended to sock you in the feels.

Metal Gear Solid V is the best stealth action game ever made. The myriad of options it gives you is mind boggling. Kojima's sendoff for the Metal GearMetal Gear Solid V is the best stealth action game ever made. The myriad of options it gives you is mind boggling. How you approach your mission, how to get there, how much you wanna do, what you wanna use; each of these disparate elements are often toted by other games as selling points, but none give you as much freedom as The Phantom Pain does. Kojima's sendoff for the Metal Gear franchise is rife with controversy, and infuriates a number of fans over lack of content and story decisions, but no other game in so many years gave me so much fun and accessibility as this one.

While I am not an avid follower of the Metal Gear franchise, I can say I have a basic understanding of the game's chronology. Taking place before Metal Gear, The Phantom Pain pits you in the shoes of Big Boss, the legendary hero who is now engaged in a proxy war against a shadow ops organization named Cipher in order to quell yet another threat to world peace. Where the story continues from here is a culmination of all the past Metal Gears in terms of theme and tone (although this entry has the most disturbing content), ending in a plot twist that divides fans and newcomers alike. I somewhat saw it coming, but I can't say I'm upset over the reveal. It puts the whole game in a very different context and even cheapens your actions a little by the end, but it's still a genuine head turner. The other plot points the game goes through is actually quite sparse given that most mission story content is contained in mission briefings and debriefings. Much of the actual story and context is hidden in the endless amount of tapes that is essential to understand just what the hell is going on. This results in the lack of cutscenes that have way more impact, and the narrativve ultimately suffers because of it. There also comes the controversy of the lack of story content, which is true given the the second chapter of the story is often devoid of story and instead peppered with repeat missions and a plot takes place out of order. It's not bad, but it's painfully devoid of anything.

The story might not win fans over, but the gameplay is light-years ahead in quality. To begin, the controls are smooth as butter. It's easy to command Big Boss from an action hero to a stealthy op in a heartbeat. This carries over to the gameplay which for only better, give you complete reign in how you want to tackle a mission. While the objectives are often the "go here, extract/rescue/kill that" shtick, it's always fun because it's dynamic. Guard placements, reactions, and equipment are tailored to how you've been playing, which ends up giving me a challenge. Best of all, this is all tied in to the Mother Base, you're safe haven to develop your growing private army and equipment. It's this sort of minigame that takes place within your iDroid that will surprisingly take up an astounding chunk of your time. It feels like an RPG in the development sense, without the number crunching. Capturing enemy soldiers to fulton and make them work for you incentives stealth play, and adds a layer of depth to the gameplay. All these parts combined make Metal Gear Solid V such a fantastic experience to play, and even repeating missions, which is often a headcase in other games, is another opportunity to build your private army and Big Boss himself.

Among smaller details, the music is quite bombastic and serves the game's setting well in addition to the game's time appropriate licensed soundtrack. Sound effects are crisp and pop, making firefights always engaging, but it's the visuals that stand out. Never before has there been as much cinematic flair contained in the visuals, and the Fox Engine supports that and more. There is a surprising amount of detail to everything and leans towards the more photorealistic side, with ultra detailed character models and environments. This is all wrapped in an insanely well optimized game that saw me close to maxed out settings and an always constant 60 fps.

While the swan song of Kojima isn't perfect with long time fans, it's a more than capable game that can keep you entertained dozens of hours on end while still giving you control. For me, it's the best stealth action game ever made, and I've been waiting for something like this for a long time.

So this is the famous Metal Gear Solid eyh? I never played it before, until I got my hand on The Phantom Pain. Boy let me tell you it's kinda a fruitless endeavor: i.e. repetitive missions, a messy story-line development, lack of even some basic logic and lack of consistency.

I'll tell a bit on the lack of consistency. Basically you can develop new weapons and gear as you progress.

However, this game rewards stealth/non-killing style. But the things you can develop are almost all meant for killing, often with a loud bang. So throughout the game you're stuck with the few basic things if you want to go the non-lethal way. But then... you have missions where you practically have no choice but to kill massively, often with loud bangs involved. So what's the point right? You can't be consistent as in, say, the Deus Ex franchise.

Then there's the repetition. You can't develop meaningful things for a long time, so you're doing repetitive missions with the same old tranquilizer pistol (if you go non-lethal) for a quite a while, whether it's a level 1 or an upgraded level 2 pistol. Nothing changes really.

Look, the graphics and motions are done nice. But it's the one and only good thing. But frankly it's a big grindfest in a neat environment which demands too much time to travel from one spot to another. Finally there's the controls, it's a bad port (unfinished) from a PlayStation system. For example the mouse doesn't even work in the Menu UI (only keys can be used to change settings) and in-game you need to press awkward key-combinations to get things done, like making cool moves. There are a lot of annoyances like that, including unfinished walk-paths and hiding spots. Even hiding is weird implemented: for some reason hiding crouched behind a wall is more hidden than just being crouched behind a wall (lol wtf?). But some spots aren't finished marking by the programmers as hiding-places, so you're wondering why you can't "hide" behind this massive boulder for example - but you can hide behind this tiny wall.

There's a storyline, but for the un-initiated it's almost entirely un-penetrable.From what I understand, even for die-hard MSG fans the story is nonsensical. One has to listen to endless audio-tapes (no video), and then try to make something coherent out of it.

What can I say, this game really needs to move up 2 good notches before I could give it an minimal acceptable 6/10 rating. Hence the rating of 4/10.

Though none of this really makes or breaks the game for me. What I can't get into is the gameplay. I just don't find it satisfying whatsoever. The game seems torn between being realistic and arcade. On one hand you need to use iron sights/scopes to shoot with any kind of accuracy, but on the other hand your guns don't have rate of fire controls, meaning that your full auto rifles just spray all over the place barely hitting targets that are point blank. The stealth mechanics aren't bad, but the enemies are bullet sponges, (which I really don't like in shooters), and instead of a silenced pistol you get a tranquilizer pistol that requires head shots to knock targets out immediately. Otherwise, you have to fire multiple shots. Which brings me to the AI, who are dumb as **** If they don't see you, you can just keep shooting them with sedatives and they just kinda stand there like 'cool drugs bro, thanks!' But, why don't you get an actual silenced pistol? So you can attach a parachute to your knocked out targets that flies them to your base where through some bizarre form of brain washing they become part of your own little private army.

Your character is also a bullet sponge, so if you want to just run n gun you certainly can. But there's no clutch play going on here, it's just bullet sponge against bullet sponge with horribly inaccurate weapons and tranq guns. I think the game is primarily focused on being a stealth game where you sneak up and choke people to sleep or shoot them in the head with a tranq gun so you can send their bodies to your oil rig out in the middle of the ocean for assimilation.

The story is atrocious: the game starts with really good cutscenes and suspence, then it pushes you in the open world with all these missions. I waited for the story to kick in but it never happened. Most of the "main" missions are like side quests.. very little is told and most of the story is recorded in audio cassettes, which are terrible to listen..
Just after half of the game, the chapter 1 ends and that's basically the end of the game. What you are left with is a few missions that try to explain what happens after, but they are really boring because the main goal of the game has already been achieved.

The sexism in this game is crazy, I think Kojima has serious issues.. there are basically no women in the game with an active role. Quiet, on top of the non-clothing, does not speak, is held in a cage, and treated same as your dog or horse.. a buddy.
Other women are always half naked (even the f....n enemies!!) and the camera zooms on their curves all the time.. WTF!. Can't believe in 2016 these games are getting 10/10 scores..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must say, this is quite the fun game but its end-game suffers. The positives are the gameplay, graphics and sound, while the negatives are the story (which is utter crap).

Gameplay is best of the lot, open-ended and tons of fun. Graphics are well optimised and never sunk below 60fps.

For a Kojima game, the story sucks and is delivered in hour long chunks at the beginning and end of the game. Also, there is a missing chapter, so most of the plot points are never cleared up, and never will be. RIP Kojima.

As for the end game, once you get the best suit (the cyborg Ninja) you are running around at light-speed, popping off headshots in super slow-mo and are basically a god of sneak. No one and nothing can touch you, so replaying the game becomes pointless as it become way too easy.

Anyway, some tart showers in front of you, so there's always that.

The only good things about the game, are the production values, the great PC port, the graphics, the sound, the voice acting. Production wise and if you forget about the repetitiveness, this game is a great work. But here end all the good things.

The story is trash. Typical Kojima trash. The kind of trash only apes find worthwhile.

Gameplay is good, but repetitive. After a while you lose the motivation to keep playing. For what is worth, this is the only metal gear solid game in the entire series that has decent gameplay. And has actualy stealth. If that is any consolation.

Still, the game overstays its welcome, and since the story is trash, unfinished, and not worth the effort, you are better off ignoring this game. And the series. Just play something else. Let Konami and the franchise die.

The game boasts high production values overall and offers some of the best gameplay in the series to date. The variety of ways you can tackle a given mission allows for great moment to moment gameplay.

The open world feels a bit sparse in that there are outposts dotted about the map. Getting to those outposts is usually uneventful with the exception of a few instances where you find a patrolling jeep or something. But its once you reach those outposts where the mechanics are given a chance to shine.

New mechanics like the reflex system allow you a certain element of forgiveness prior games didn't have. But at times it can make the game a bit too easy. This gives MGSV a greater level of accessibility though that earlier games didn't have. You aren't punished by going loud. Your play style is reflected in the world as soldiers wear gear to counter your tactics.

The other area where the game falls short is in its story. Act 1 is entertaining enough. But it seems the criticism of previous entries has caused Kojima to throw the baby out with the bathwater. As a long time fan of the series, the longer exposition and cutscenes was something I always enjoyed in a Metal Gear title. Of course this is made worse knowing that a significant portion of the story was cut. Much of the story has been put on cassette tapes which is better than nothing but I would have appreciated more exposition given by the characters themselves overall. "Venom Snake" is practically mute which makes everything come across as a bit awkward.

However the game quickly falls into a cycle of repetition that can quickly become stale. This is exacerbated by recycled missions. I currently have played 140+ hours spanning both main missions and side-ops. By the time you get to act 2 you start to see "Extreme" versions of main missions you have already completed. These wouldn't be as egregious if they were optional. But in many cases you have to complete these missions or variations of side-ops you already have done to open up new story missions. Of course all those perfect 10's heaped on the game by the media made no mention of the cut story content or these recylced missions. They break the pacing of the game and are the worst kind of padding in a video game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. it is so sad to think about how awesome this game could be with the nice graphics and optimization... After that amazing intro, i could never imagine how boring and repetitive it would get.

Boring because of the completely nonsensical plot and back story, lame villains and the disappointing boss battles, specially the first one with Sahelanthropus, they really took a dump on the game with this one:
-Snake is infiltrated in a high security military base filled with soldiers, war tanks and war helicopters.
-If you decide to escape the base without the walker machine, Snake is on feet, carrying a crippled prisoner plus all those weapons.
-"Skull face" somehow knows about it, he could command all the soldiers in the base to kill Snake easily, but instead, he decides to make Snake a surprise on his exit and show him Sahelanthropus for like no reason at all.
-From one second to another, all the soldiers in the military base just vanished, the high security military base is total empty and simply abandoned now, forget about them, it is only Snake and Sahelanthropus now. (the same happened when you are about to secure the remains of the man on fire)
-Sahelanthropus with all its power and greatness is unable of killing Snake, even if he is standing right in front of it at a open field and a clear shot vision.
-Snake escapes Sahelanthropus and the military base on feet, uncovered and carrying all those weapons plus a crippled prisoner on his back.
-Snake calls the helicopter to pick him up in a place where Sahelanthropus can see.
-Sahelanthropus is unable of taking down a chopper.
-Snake gets in the chopper and destroys Sahelanthropus with shots from a .50 machine gun.
Seriously? Even a old war tank could handle those shots or take down the chopper but the weapon supposed to bring to world to its knees could not?

About being repetitive, some people say that it is only if you play always the same time but that makes no sense at all.
It is nice that i could do all the exact same missions all over again in a different way if i wanted, not that i was bound to do it anyway so i can get to the end of the game, which by the way, was cut out from it. The game has no end at all, what doesn't matter because the story is so boring that you do not have desire to know what happens next.

It is unbelievably long, jamloaded with levels, items, fights, and exposition. It is the longest Metal Gear by far, the longest game I've played in years and, speaking purely in terms of dollars to hours played value, it payed for itself many times over. The sheer scale of it means that it boasts a diverse gamut of experiences. It drags badly in some places, but other times it delights and thrills. I cried once or twice, and not just because the game remembered my birthday and baked me a virtual cake.

Phantom Pain represents an evolution of the gameplay seen in MGS: Peace Walker. Gameplay consists of relatively bite-sized missions with simple objectives, this time however, layered over an open theater of operations that you are free to explore between missions. It is a considerable departure from the other Solid titles in this and other ways- you are not penalized for killing enemies directly, and perhaps most jarring, there are very, very few boss fights.

Combat is manageable thanks to very slick movement and aiming controls- Phantom Pain’s PC port is incredible in this regard. It also looks and runs very well. Load times are very reasonable, and you will spend all of the considerable playtime of this game doing something- if not fighting or sneaking, then performing upkeep of your base and forces. However, herein lies an oddity about the Phantom Pain. The Metal Gear series is famous for its lengthy cutscenes and large infodumps, as well as a high amount of optional radio conversations and reading material. While this game has a fair number of audio logs to listen to, none of them are more then ten minutes long, and only a few of the game's 40 or so story missions have cutscenes of significant length. Plot points come sporadically, and when they do, they never seem to have the same impact as in other games in the series. I feel a Phantom Pain for the loss of gripping storytelling that marked earlier entries in the series. It also has a similar issue to Peace Walker in that the game does not end when the credits first roll, instead dragging things out for a few more hours with a handful more story missions and side operations, going so far as to have duplicate missions with arbitrary difficulty inflation, though thankfully these do not count towards unlocking the actual final mission, which is to say the least, a disappointing one. I was especially disheartened to hear that an entire mission was cut from the final release, though you can view unfinished footage on Youtube and such.

I had Phantom Pain's major twist spoiled for me long before I actually played it, and I had actually come to grips with it long before it would have been revealed. It does perhaps raise more questions then it answers, but such is what Hideo Kojima is known for. Sadly, this is the last of the Kojima-led Metal Gear titles, and as a result, likely the last title in the series worthy of anyone's attention. While a powerful title in its own right, it is a sour note to end such a venerable series on. It's an overly complex mess of a game with a laundry list of both good ideas and boneheaded ones, and to be absolutely frank, there is probably a little something for everyone here, at least for longtime Metal Gear fans, shooter fans, stealth game fans and most certainly 100% completionists. Oh, and you can invade people's bases too, I guess. If you're into that kind of thing. Weirdo.

I should probably make mention of the added versus multiplayer of Metal Gear Online, which is also not without its fair share of issues. While it makes good use of series staples like the Fulton system, stealth camo, tranquilizer guns and the famous cardboard boxes, it also commits the cardinal sin of multiplayer shooters by having an unforgiving damage model that rewards the lucky rather then the skilled. I am previous incarnations of MGO were vastly superior.

I initially passed up Phantom Pain in favor of Mad Max, which had the misfortune of releasing the same day. Oddly enough, both games have similar issues with pacing and a dearth of story content versus collectibles and inane sidequests. Mad Max had way better cars and driving controls though, as one might expect. Still, both were emotionally punchy and, ultimately, Phantom Pain is the rare sort of game that might actually be worth its list price. It also has an excellent soundtrack comprising many 80s greats, including of course, A-Ha’s “Take on me” and Dead Or Alive’s “You spin me right round”. If nothing else, I will remember this game as the one that let me blast Billy Idol’s "Rebel Yell" as I rode into battle. There’s also custom soundtrack support. I recommend the soundtrack from the 1981 Heavy Metal movie, so your helicopter could play, say, Cheap Trick’s “You Must Be Dreamin”.

The complexity depth and scope of this game is hard to sum up or indeed fathom.
Built on the foundations of earlier games and incorporating mechanics and ideas from those titles as well as some brand new ones, all of this placed in TWO massive free roaming combat arenas.
Its almost too much game! Not in the way that there are too many “collectables” or stuff like that to pick up but in a way that makes you feel like you are just one man trying to defeat a massive army.

    Konami are EVIL!

I am a fan of these games and played them back when they came out. But when this game came out I was not a fan!
Like many people I was on the Konami sucks train and was shocked and appalled by the way the game locked away the stuff you earn and offered it to other players to steal! Then they announced that you would be able to “insure” your stuff by paying them! Konami were essentially using Mafia style strong arm extortion racketeering on it faithful players!!

That said I never had any problems unless it couldn't sign in to the servers and on my second play through its a lot less shocking. I know the stuff I don't just sell immediately might get “locked” and I will have to wait (like a FB p2p game) to unlock that stuff again or just get new stuff. Also I like making my base super deadly and watching people fail to take it down, then being like “wow good job” when someone actually does!

    What Story?!

I know allot has been said about the story, but I think after all the other games its not so bad to keep the story minimal. The fact that it is in between games with strong stories and is trying to tie them together, means it finds itself restricted in what it can do. I mean they're not going to kill Snake or Ocelot are they? The fact that this is a “filler” game trying to fit in is evident in the two regions you visit. I love the Africa area and its crazy to think that the pixilated top down original game and this are basically the same thing in the same place!

    Plus points:
    Great gameplay.
    Good Graphics.
    Stable FPS.
    Large world.
Many weapons / items to choose from.
Lots of vehicles drive / get dropped in.
The whole supply drop / bombardment system.
    The Fulton system.
    Different characters to play as.
    The buddy(s).
Kooky weirdness and hiding in boxes.

    Minus Points:
    Konami
Badly implemented pay to play system that nobody needs or wants and was just an attempt at extortion by Konami.
Have to connect to bad servers or your stuff is stolen by Konami.
Bad (unrealistic) physics (its not a simulator).
Some buggy gameplay (Its fine when you're used to it).
Some annoying gameplay (being exposed / attacked in a cut scene), only in story missions.
    Occasionally unrealistic AI responses.
Long traversals to / in between destinations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain -

SPOILER!!!!

The only low point for this game in my opinion is the lack of the classic boss fights that Metal Gear is so famous for, there is like two (which are fairly good) but there could have done a lot more. The multiplayer base system is really solid and it adds a lot of depth to the gameplay and the actual multiplayer is quite unique and original. Overall i think this is a great game and a definite buy for stealth fans or Metal Gear fans. Expand

    PROS
    + It have great graphics
    + Good story (more less).
    + Incredible addictive open-world gameplay.
    + Good sound effects.
+ Exceptional soundtrack (but they don't use it, don't ask me why).
+ Have plenty of hours of play time.
+ The reasons behind the actions of each characters are well designed and well explained.
+ One of the best optimisations i've ever see.
+ The emptiness you feel when you end the game (i will explain that later)
+ Even if the game isn't as good as their predecessors, it have some "Kojima's momments" that are great and epic.

That were the positive things, now let go to the negatives parts of the game:
    - Even if the story is good, it's not stand for a MGS story.
    - It have micro-transactions.
    - The side ops are repetitive and boring.
    - The tecnology that is used in the game (1984) is better than the one use in the first MGS (2005).
    - The characters are great, but they don't really progress in the game (except Big Boss)
    - It doesn't give a satisfactory end to this franchise.
    - The bosses are horribly bad (for a MGS game).
    - And the worst of all, IT IS **** INCOMPLETE. Almost all the second chapter missions are missions of the first chapter, but with more difficulty. There was suposse to be a 3rd chapter, but it just didn't happen, and so i can't pass the fact that this game is incomplete, even if it wasn't Kojima's intention.

    EXPLANATION (CONTAINS SPOILERS):
By saying "The emptiness you feel when you finish the game" i wanted to say that it is as if everything had gone to hell. Even if you have the mother base, and everyone love you, in reality you've loose everything. You lost your identity and your best companion and at the same time your love. This leave me with an emptiness feeling, like if everything that i've achieved during the game was nothing, because, as i just said, it feels like if you've lost everything you care about. I think that this is the feeling Kojima want to transmit, The Phantom Pain of the ones that are no longer on your side. This is the first time in the whole game that i feel something similar to what others MGS games made me feel.
It is great to know that Kojima is still the same as always.

    MARK: 82/100

As a long standing Metal Gear fan I was as excited as teen is with their first car for this game. Kojima usually never fails to please when it comes to games for me. Kojima usually never fails to please when it comes to games for me. I have grown up with these games for most of my life and I sometimes feel like I know the characters more then they know themselves. And while Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has the honor of being my favorite game of all time Metal Gear Solid 5 does have a place in my heart forever as well. I feel however it could have been so much more had they let Kojima make the game he wanted to make and actually would have let him finish the ending he had wanted to finish. The game is amazingly fun gameplay wise. It mixes elements of sandbox, rpg, and stealth perfectly. The game also plays alot like mgs3 in certain aspects. The main downfall this game has is in two aspects. The first one is snakes voice actor. Now David Hayter may not be a good voice actor but he is corny and over the top. He is also most importantly perfect for the voice of snake. I never thought anyone else could voice snake and be good at it. And I was right. There's a reason Kiefer Sutherland doesn't talk much in the game and that's because he's a terrible voice actor. Snake stays silent for most of the game and that's because the voice actor portraying him is mediocre. Now I'm fine with bad voice acting in a game as long as its the first game in a series. But when it's your fifth game if you're going to start making adjustments please make sure you get good voice actors. Big Boss was never not talkative in MGS3 or Peacewalker. Did he talk less then solid snake? Sure but was he practically silent the whole game having no emotion at all? No and that's where this Metal gear falls short. The rest of the voice acting crew all sound really good and then Kiefer comes in with his terrible voice acting. The second part it falls short in is the story. The story is pretty good up until the end. Now i'm not going to spoil it for you but think mass effect threes ending in the sense it kind of makes the whole game null but not as bad. This stuff isn't enough to make the game an absolute failure though. The game is absolutely one of the best of 2015 and one of the best Metal Gears of all time. Expand

Wow, did I have a lot of fun playing this game. Sadly it only gets a 9/10 since Act II was basically rushed and doesn't really even compare anywhere close to Act I. If this game had an Act II that was just as good as Act I, it would be a 10/10. The game itself is pretty amazing. Best sandbox shooter I've ever played.

The beginning in the game, in the hospital was really good, i thought in my head oh boy was we in for a treat, tbh things were going well in chapter 1 until you start to think.

    Cons
    - Chapter 2 is not complete, random cutscenes, rehash of same missions from chapter1, timeline doesnt flow.
    - In what way will the the characters be relevant and connect to the other MGS games? Like practically 0.
    - Skullface is very underwhelming, you dont even get a boss fight against him
    - Boss fights? Yeh hardly any, if there was one, then it was very forgettable.
    - The story is CRAP, i dont care for a chapter 3 at this point, i am so dissapointed in the previous chapters and the story, i really dont care if the game is finished.
    - Codetalker? COPULATION, VOCAL CORD PARASITES, THE DIN'EH... he is just zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
    - Miller is constantly pissed off unless he is cooking burgers.
    - Ocelot is not the real Ocelot
    - Did i mention the story and pacing?
    - And the plot twist in the end? I appreciate what they were trying to do, but that made me like 'really?....'
    - How can zero not be part of this game at all?!?!
    - The open-world makes it bland (not saying it shouldnt be open world).
    - Side quests get very repetitive and tedious

    Pros
    - Gameplay, by for the best mechanics for me. It can get too easy with the buddies and upgrades, just simply dont use em if it gets too easy.
    - Graphics are nice
    - Runs very well
    - At times the chapter 1 missions were quite tense.

But yeh overall i did not like this game, and was a huge let down. I know the drama that happened between Kojima-san and Konami. Dont get me wrong Im all for Kojima and hate the vile Konami but even i have to admit Kojima kinda dropped the ball for this game.

This is the final edit of my review (the fifth). I stopped playing the game for a while, and just now returned to it to dabble around with it.

So, in a nutshell: This game hit me by surprise, and is in my top 3 of the most enjoyable games I got and played in 2015.
Before I go on: I was never deeply into the whole series. I did play one MGS on the PS1 like 15 years ago or so, and liked that, but I never played any of the others, and at first wasn't interested in this game. I bought it on impulse, and haven't regretted it at all.

I wrote that so you'd know where I am coming from regarding the series. That's why I might not share the disappointment many of the fans of the series seem to feel, which is reflected in many of the negative reviews.

Now, let's go through the categories:

Graphics: They look great, and the game performed flawlessly on my system, first on a cheapo GT 730, then on a GTX 960 with 4 gigs of Ram (on an i7-4790, 16 gigs of Ram, W7). I am impressed by the optimization, really, especially compard to some of the other triple A-releases I tried this year, which had some big issues at first.

Story: Yep, I was confused. I didn't know the backstory from the other games, and even though I did watch some explanation-vids on Youtube, I am sure I still don't know or understand half of the story. The story in this one is a bit convoluted, but that, for once, didn't bother me much. Don't get me wrong, I usually care quite a bit about the story in the games I play, yet in this one, I didn't mind the sometimes confusing twists or the fact I didn't know the background of a lot fo the characters.
The "listen to tapes to get more background" was an unusual device, some call it lazy. I actually liked it, as it was different from watching a ton of cutscenes (and there are quite a few in this game as well!) or reading tons of text. I actually LIKED listening to those interrogations on tapes while being on missions

Gameplay: FUN!! You can kinda decide on what style you prefer to play. Of course, highest ranks are given when you go mainly for stealth, and of course, to obtain more and better soldiers, you need to tranq them. But you can also try to go serial killer a lot of times.
I went for mostly tranq weapons. I spent a lot for research, yet didn't unlock all of the improvements.

Some of the missions were VERY challenging, VERY, as I was trying to get the best possible rank. If you don't have the patience, you can wing a mission and return later to retry and get a better rating.

LEt me point this out: YES, in act 2, you get a lot of hard mode-versions of older missions. BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THESE!! I didn't do ANY of them and still unlocked the whole story up to the very end. These, I think, are mainly for the extra challenge (going in without any gear, obtaining it in the field, total stealth etc) and possibly for more resources.

Once you get Quiet, things get easier, as she can be very helpful, sometimes even IMBA, esp. if you hand her a tranq sniping gun.
Yes, a lot of the missions were rather repetitive, but I didn't mind much. I did a story mission or two, then did a couple of quick side missions, rinse and repeat.
Didn't bother with the FOB missions, and I don't think I will.

I played the game with an Xbox controller for Windows, and the controls felt great, especially compared to some other new games (Witcher 3, FO4).

Before I end this: Yes, apparently the game had issues. There was some drama with the studio and Kojima, and some parts seem unfinished or too rough.

However, here is my point: I didn't expect to like this, or even buy it. I bought it on impulse, and am glad I did. It gave me more than 100 hrs of enjoyment, and that, to me, is what matters most. Are there things that could be improved? Sure, btu aren't there always?
I enjoyed those 100+ hrs, and I wouldn't be surprised if I start over at some point.
This, together with W3, is my favorite game released in 2015, and I am glad I made that spontaneous purchase =)

Metal Gear Solid V is amazing at times, and I enjoyed playing it, but there are so many embarrassing blunders and contradictions. Rich tactical gameplay vs an almost dead world.
