Dec 10, 2020Respawn Entertainment nails everything that makes VR so special and wraps it in a fun shooter with a narrative style that doesn’t take itself too seriously and offers simple but solid multiplayer options. Add to the mix a true gem with real historic value like the Gallery, and you can hardly ask for more.

Dec 12, 2020Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is a show from beginning to end, an experience that invites the user to fully experience it, a full background with it and the possibilities it offers us, in short: to be lived. Its great variety of missions, with a long-lasting campaign that revisits some of its best scenarios is its main asset. To all this adds its multiplayer and survival modes, something that makes the total package very complete.

Nov 30, 2021Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, if nothing else, represents a symbolic step forward for VR game platforms like the Oculus Quest 2. It’s the closest thing to a AAA title I’ve played on my headset yet. I don’t know if its nearly-50GB file size is warranted given the so-so visuals, but I did have a lot of fun with the Campaign missions. I’ll still wait a while for the multiplayer to work out its kinks, but I can see myself enjoying that eventually, too. All in all, I’m not sure if Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond would do Grandpa proud, but if you own an Oculus Quest 2, it’s a fun experience and worthy of your time.

CD-ActionJul 23, 2021Bland plot (which prevents Above and Beyond from being a truly magnificent experience) and somewhat cartoonish characters did not spike the game’s guns. I was impressed with the scope and details of the environments, and gunplay was awesome because the weapons have a nice kick to them. If only the controls were better… I lost count of the situations when I picked up a wrong object or ended up giving myself an injection instead of throwing a grenade. [02/2021, p.62]

Dec 10, 2020Above and Beyond’s gunplay is tight, the VR controls and interactions are vast, varied, and engaging. Moreover, the campaign itself is an extensive gallery of both history and creativity combined into a gripping World War 2 campaign that pays reverence to both the experiences of those who lived through the war and the foundation of Medal of Honor as a whole.

Dec 14, 2020Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond marks a successful return of the license in virtual reality, but the transition to this new media still needs some work. If it clearly plays the realism card to offer us a show worthy of the biggest productions of the genre, it unfortunately does not always achieve its goals in terms of immersion. An improved optimization and some German dubbing would be more than welcome. In the meantime, the atmosphere is present, with quality graphics, many animations and an epic soundtrack. We also appreciated the classic but efficient multiplayer mode.

Dec 11, 2020Well-paced and rather long, Medal of Honor: Above & Beyond tastes like a good B series: the actors are not very good, the German accent is approximate, some sets are in cardboard boxes, but we take real pleasure in wreacking havoc on enemy lines.

Dec 23, 2020Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond offers a fun and lengthy single player campaign with lots of replayability alongside a full featured suite of multiplayer modes. I did, however, find the general tone to be somewhat at odds with the respectful presentation, lacking a connection with real history and feeling more like a Wolfenstein game at times. There are also some issues still to be patched, which Respawn are working on, and the multiplayer lacks players right now. Overall, this is a tour of duty that is rewarding but not essential.

Dec 20, 2020Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond isn't the return to the series that I would have hoped. As a VR game is has a lot to offer, the gameplay is engaging, the missions varied, and both the single-player and multiplayer can be fun to play. However, the story is woefully mismanaged, with a cast of mostly unlikeable and unsympathetic characters - a tragedy when it comes with an incredibly powerful piece of work in the form of the gallery, a collection of documentaries and interviews with veterans of the war.

Jan 28, 2021It’s clear that Respawn still has the chops to make a quality Medal of Honor game. There’s a lot of heart here, and an attention to detail that must be admired. With that said, it’s clear the studio had troubles accomplishing its goals in VR – and the result is a curious VR experience that’s worth experiencing, but equally is nothing like a VR system seller. It stands strides behind Alyx – but then again, so do most VR games.

Jan 4, 2021At the end of the day, I want to play more Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, but the technical issues rear their head even on the most powerful hardware available. The campaign often falls on the wrong side of humor, but the gunplay is like nothing else. Multiplayer is an awesome added treat, though the bots are pretty dumb. It’s the very definition of a mixed bag.

It’s not quite enough to solidify the experience as a must-play, but there are plenty of bright spots. If you’re eager to dive into a VR version of WWII with exciting set piece moments, authentic historical footage, and an addictively fun online multiplayer mode, then you should come away satisfied. But if you were looking for an immersive narrative wrapped up in a cutting-edge evolution of VR game design with expert pacing — don’t hold your breath.

Jan 26, 2021What should have been a staple of VR shooters to come turned out to be little more than what feels like a rehash of a 2000's shooter. While the gameplay might have you yawning at times and racked with frustration in others, The Gallery at least provides an incredible wealth of stories from real WWII veterans that brings a level of intimacy to what could otherwise feel like a soulless experience.

Jan 6, 2021Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond proclaims to be a AAA production (and is priced as such) but falls well short of that bar. With simplistic core gameplay, uninteresting & daft enemies, and a lack of polish, the bulk of the game feels like a shooting gallery. The set-piece sequences which are supposed to deliver epic WWII moments are foiled by bad writing, pacing, and lack of player agency. A meaningful portion of the game (roughly 10–20%) largely ignores best practices of VR comfort and won't be comfortable for some players. Competitive players might find some fun in the game's fast-paced and largely competent multiplayer component, and the 'Gallery' mini-documentaries are exceptionally well produced, but a shame that they are locked in with a game that conflicts with their reverent tone.

While its gunplay is satisfying, the moments where it shines are all too brief, stunted by cutscenes that force you to stand in place and spectate a story that rarely includes you or your character. On the other hand, the multiplayer has potential but is in need of more players and some balance tweaks. There are some incredible World War II games that are worth playing even today, but Above and Beyond falls short in far too many ways to be considered among them.

Nov 23, 2021Medal of Honor Above and Beyond returns to Oculus Quest II, and the challenge is great on this small autonomous headset. And unfortunately, he doesn’t get it too. The technique is often faulty, with jerky animations of the sets and characters, which can become unpleasant over time. And if we set the graphics settings to the maximum, the game almost starts to row. In addition, the single player campaign, made up of small scenes of a few minutes, offers a false rhythm, with a lot of rather long dialogue, with a French accent in overplayed English, between two sometimes short fights. If some spectacular passages stand out, it is difficult to get excited about its events. A survival mode and a multiplayer mode complete the picture, but the rather stupid AI of the enemies does not make it all essential. It's a shame, because in terms of interaction, it was pretty well done, with pretty cool weapon handling. On recent releases, prefer Resident Evil 4 VR, by far.

Dec 11, 2020Despite moving into new territory, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond feels like it’s traveling a well-worn path but doesn’t provide enough reasons to make it worth buying a headset. Even with all of the necessary equipment, this game doesn’t rise to being a must-play experience.
