Giant robots (Battle Mech's) are awesome.

Battletech lore is awesome. If you want to auto win buy “Clan” Mechs. Twice or three times the fire power for the same size. If you want to auto win with “Inner Sphere” buy light mech with the biggest engines. Go fast. No lie, the smallest mechs can’t be hit because of hit box and latency issues. So at the end of most matches Inner Sphere light mechs usually do the most damage, it’s just silly. Some light mech pilots have gotten so blatant about it that they latterly stop moving and just stand there in front of you shooting, knowing that the hit box bug will protect them, and 80% of the time it does.

    No balance.

    Not enough maps.

The Devs have been up front and honest in all their statements, goals and vision for the game. Most people who are complaining have not played long enough to see the work that has been done and is continually being done to make this game become absolutely Legendary AND/OR DO NOT understand the concept of a free 2 play game in continual development.

These people singed into a closed an then open Beta and are surprised and upset that there have been continual changes, balancing and bug fixes......DUUHHHH!!!!!

It is a good game- there is a lot of hate right now towards PGI/IGP- but that has no impact on the game. No CW yet- but the actual gameplay is pretty solid and the recent interviews/future content given by PGI makes the future look bright.

There has been a concerted effort by a very vocal minority to make the worst pub of the communication issues from PGI. While I can understand some of it, their interest in sabotaging the success of the game is sad. If a game can keep my interest for a year or longer, especially one that I voluntarily pay extra just for fluff, it is definitely a good game. Why have people invested so heavily in this game while it was in Beta? Because it is amazing! Requesting your money back a year later because they put 3PV (3rd point of view)? Very lame.

In addition to twitch shooting you are struggling with mech controls, fighting against inertia and your attention is divided between understanding the streaming data from sensors and focusing to your sights to make those shots in.

I like this game, it gets the Mech part right. Right now the game suffers from lack of content, there is only a handful of maps to play on and the battles tend to play out in predictable patterns so you can get bored at times, also their netcode is a bit buggy and not all shots get registered atm.

In the game environment cannot be destroyed at all, you bounce off buildings without making a dent and walk through trees like they are holograms instead of real objects, this is a real shame as most new players expect these features when they start playing a game about giant stompy robots.

Still the game is free to play, so give it a shot you lose nothing by trying it out and as I said, I like this game even with all it's shortcomings.

Unlike many FPS's there are no respawns, making you think be for you just run into battle, or else you are going to just be spectating. This is further reinforced as the Mech you entered into the match with is locked until the match finishes. I also enjoy that location based damage is very important to pay attention to. You can kill a Mech pretty easily if you take out the right part, but a good pilot can mitigate this. Also proper use of your team is essential, something too many other games fail to do. You can do very well as a single player, but you can only carry your team so far. I have never seen one mech win a match all by themselves, sure they may have done 1000 damage and got most of the kills, but without the team working with them, they would have never had the chance to do it.

For a F2P game I would say it has a pretty good model. There are a few mechs that you have to spend real money to get, but for the most part they are just different not better, so you don't feel its pay to win. One exception to this is they roll the new Mechs out as first purchasable with real money then after a certain amount of time they become purchasable with in game currency. Some people will say it is grindy but the only thing you do to get money in game is play the game, no minigames or other gibberish so I can't really call it a grind. However, even though this is a skill based game, there are upgrades to your mech you have to earn through play, aside from the loadouts like weapons and engines. Getting your initial Mech setup can be a bit of a drag.

Some negatives would be the lack of game modes (though they are adding more in the near future) The map selection is pretty weak, they often over correct while trying to balance aspects of the game, matchmaking is still a work in progress, and my biggest gripe is the lack of built in voice chat (again something they say they are working on)

Overall if you like Mechs and FPS's you should check this out. Starting isn't easy, but work with your team and ask questions. Most people are very friendly, and happy to help you out. Finding a mech that works for you is important, as just getting the biggest Mech isn't going to guarantee you success (in fact I find the Assaults are much more difficult to pilot starting out)

Rating it for what it is now, not what it could become in 1-2 years. There are a lot of promised features that would make the game complete, however that's not the game today.
Today it's a game of mech deathmatches, in which the most developed part is the shop.
There are a lot of problems here and there. Yet the gameplay itself is as engaging and fun as it was at the start of the game.

However, IF you take the game that we have at this minute, discounting what may or may not be added in the future, you still have a great experience.

It lacks in game VOIP and an overall immersive experience linking all the endless coliseum style matches.

That being said, a majority of the negative reviews can be attributed to poor community management at MWO. Other games have their detractors but have very little effect on the game reviews, in PGI's case with MWO, they are experiencing a backlash from their poor PR skills. As far back as Oct 2012 in closed beta, there were many vocal members pointing out all of the shortfalls which are being highlighted now by professional reviewers such as poor initial game experience and a longer grinding experience compared to other games. PGI unfortunately belittled them through posts on their forums, twitter, FB and in podcasts (yeah it wasn't just a one time careless comment) essentially telling them to off. While some of the negative reviews can be taken word for word, others are simply a vindictive backlash. There are plans to introduce a more immersive experience but no solid dates have been given.

The publishers have certainly made some communication blunders along the way (they are a fairly small team after all), but for the most part these have been blown out of proportion by a highly vocal minority of passionate community members.

This is,While it would be white-washing to say that the game is without issues (as all new games are), it is clear from reading many of the reviews that a lot of the people who are slagging the game are disenfranchised individuals who take their dislike of a certain design feature or the unavailability of a feature at launch to mean that they can (and should) call the game garbage. This is, unfortunately, very characteristic of the entitled attitude that many gamers have.

Shortly before launch, two things happened; a feature that the developers had stated quite some time ago would not be used was in fact put in game (and as of writing this is no longer in any meaningful matches), and Community Warfare (the 'meat and bones') was post-poned. Both were disappointing issues, but understandable on both counts; regarding the first issue of the suddenly-implanted feature, design paradigms change for any product, and it was still Beta; at actual launch, the feature was relegated to 'casual only' games, not true competition. Regarding post-poning Community Warfare, it's only to be expected that a F2P title with a limited budget may have to push a feature back awhile.

Neither occurrence should be reason to slag the game in horrible ways, but the spite of internet warriors is indeed legendary. I would urge anyone who comes here for advice on what to play to take a good, hard look at what one is reading, and if it looks hyper-negative, to disregard it.

Fundamentally, MW:O is a Free-to-Play title. Free. As in it does not cost most players a single penny. If this game had been released and/or published by a company like Blizzard-Activision, Microsoft, or even Electronic Arts, I would say that a number of criticisms were fair. As it is, it is a free-to-play title from a minor studio who built a functional and stable game in only two years on a very small budget. Their entire development team wouldn't even fill a single section at any major developer. Perspective goes a long, long way towards affecting how one should see things, and I think that some people simple forget to put this company and this title in said perspective.

Game Play: Superb. The game has been stable for most players for quite a long time. There are terrain bugs at times, and as with any PvP game, weapons and equipment balance is always in flux; if there are complaints about PvP in games like World of Warcraft, with a decade of development under its belt and billions of dollars to command, it should surprise nobody that MW:O has its own issues. For the most part, though, the game plays well; it feels like you are in command of a giant machine, not like you are some faceless solider in a Call of Duty clone.

Graphics: Rendered on the Cry Engine, the game looks as one would expect very, very good. DX11 is in the pipe for testing and should only increase the magnitude of what we already see, which is fluid movement, gorgeous lighting, beautifully rendered 'mechs, and a very 'to scale' impression of combat.

Sound: The effects are brilliant, and especially with headphones or with a good surround-sound system, one feels very much like one is in the of a machine. The only failing is the lack of music. Trailers for the game and trailers for special 'money only' BattleMechs have featured some fantastic music, all original compositions, but none is in the game... yet.

Overall: If you're a BattleTech or MechWarrior fan, this is worth it. If you're a Call of Duty-style gamer, this is not your kind of game. If you want to play something that requires team-work, something that is far (FAR) more complex and challenging that your standard FPS game, and something that has a bright future in the form of dynamic and meaningful results from battles, MW:O is a great title to get onboard with. It's not all here yet, but it's getting there.

The game has gone through many problems, a period of total pay-2-win, but what is the game currently? It's a battletech deathmatch simulator with micro (and not so micro) transactions. Combat is good, prices are high, and the grind is long - but there is fun to be had.

Nothing has clocked up more hours of my time than this game in the last 2 years. The only issue I have with it is that the hit registration seems to go from good to bad and then back again quite constantly which is frustrating. Other than that this game is awesome.

I have been playing since Closed Beta and have been apart of the ups and downs. I think that right now the game is at a stand still, but I believe where it stand it is a great game. It just need to go somewhere soon as far as game modes, community warfare, and maybe addition of the clan tech. Over all I am happy to see the progress of this game and I think they are doing a great job.

The core game mechanics are complex in a good way that requires you to pay attention to what is happening whether you're scouting, sniping, brawling, defending a base, harassing the enemy in your light mech, trying to shoot the AC20 off the arm of the mech that is tearing you apart, or setting up an ambush by powering down. There are so many ways to play the game other than just "shoot the enemy dead & repeat". In addition the game play is slower than your typical shooter. This is probably the best thing ever for someone like me who no longer has the twitch reflexes to play Counter-Strike, Battlefield, etc. This game benefits from thinking about your team's situation and that of your own mech, coming up with a strategy, and working as a team. Of course sometimes everything goes to hell and you still lose, but you can reflect, think about what went wrong and adjust your strategy the next time!

The game is fun to me for these reasons and I keep coming back for more. BONUS: You can play this game with plenty of beers in your system and still do well! Although I have a lot of fun, it's not a perfect game nor is it complete as many have probably noted in their reviews. I am looking forward to additional game modes, DX11, new user interface 2.0, and the perpetual evolution of the game as it develops.

If you are having trouble deciding whether to try this game or not, ITS FREE TO PLAY! See for yourself and decide. Even better yet, get some friends to join you to improve your experience, however you will want to provide your own VOIP solution since the game does not yet include one.

    Good Luck & Happy Hunting

There is the whole leveling up to gain a more useful mech, the ability to edit the mech within limits. The game is free to play, free to download. You can pay money for extras, but you can also play for free and while it will be more difficult, it will be playable and you can be competitive. This game still has alot of room to grow to, with more mechs, maps, modes, etc.

Yeah, the developers haven't done everything the community asks for the way it's asked for. But the game is very playable. If something is overpowering they tweak it. It may not happen instantly, but they work on it. There isn't much for tutorials, so a new player without a BattleTech background or friends that already play, will have a steep learning curve.

I would like it have more maps and more game modes. I can't wait for the new user interface for the MechLab, because while the current one is usable, it could be better.

Bottom line though, I liked it so much, I built an entire computer to run it.

The principle behind the game is sound, and the in-game combat is fun and exciting for the most part. The game needs more content, an in-game voip and more content. I'm confident that these issues will be addressed as the game matures but would not hesitate to recommend it as it stands now to anyone that grew up loving Battletech.

At its heart MWO captures perfectly mech combat and customisation that are the hallmarks of this franchise. It has excellent graphics and sound, and battles are tense affairs where you try to eek out the best from your build and stomp to glory. In this respect MWO delivers and as a F2P title you would be mad to pass it up. That said the game is not flawless. The new player experience can be somewhat unforgiving, especially for those new to piloting mechs. PGI the games developers have recently added a movement tutorial and plan to follow this up with further instruction. However the match maker can often pitch green players against veterans and this may cause frustration. At its heart though MWO is a team based game and provided that new players stick with their team there should be no reason they wont achieve victory.

MWO also seems a rather fair F2P title without any P2W components. The free starter mechs are outclassed by player custom jobs, but all the content (with exception to Hero Mechs which offer an earnings bonus and different weapon configs) is accessible without spending a penny. Currently the meta game consists of earning C-Bills (money) and XP (Experience Points) in order to upgrade your mechs and expand your pilot skills. The mech customisation is excellent and features most of the options found in the board game. The pilot skills are generic for each type of mech chassis and whilst offering good bonuses could do with some more variation and specialisation.

In fact this cycle of battles and customisation and unlocks is incredibly addictive helped in no small way by the multilayered combat. This truely is a "Thinking Mans Shooter" and whist it can seem overwhelming to the new player the level of depth here provides for a rich and deep combat experiance that transends any other shooter this reviewer has played.

And whist that is MWO's strongest assest it is also its biggest shortcomming. Eventually you realise that the endless cycles of battles are all there is to the game. Whilst you may be having a literal blast playing them, MWO really does need other layers to round it out. Thankfully PGI are aware of this and from the get go have been promising players a much vaunted "Community Warfare" mode. In short this allows players to join factions from the game universe and engage in a ongoing campaign for the known galaxy. Unfortuantley despite the best laid plans of the devs CW isnt yet in the game. Which is a shame because with it MWO could easily rank up there as one of the best PC games of all time, let alone the best F2P title. The devs have stated that it is comming soon and infact plan to make a detailed announcement providing further details at their launch party. CW will also be preceeded my a much needed upgrade to the UI, which, whilst doing its job certainly could do with more polish.

So that said should you bother with MWO and will you be playing it in 2 months time? The answer is a unreserved YES! At its core as a action shooter it is fantastic. It requires the player to make a choice as to their prefered playstlye and then challenges them to create a mech which can undertake that role most effectively. Provided the player does some research outside the game (such as the MWO forums) the sheer range of options can be breathaking. This in itself is reason enough to get this on your hardrive. However when CW arrives it has the potential to boost this title into the stratosphere. However without that feature and given the current poor UI and unforgiving new player experiance I have to award MWO 8/10. Once CW and UI2 drop though....get ready for something special.

Can call it Pay to Not Grind as Much. This game is ready for the Whales that love Battletech and Mechwarrior. Store sells cosmetics, Mechs, xp buffs, credit buffs.

If you die in a TDM match, there is no respawn. Some other battle modes, i think lets you take another mech out, if you die.
Winning the matches give you the most xp and credits. Winning a match requires teamwork, communications, good aiming while moving skills, tactics, good mech builds, using cover and speed, and luck to be on the winning side. Playing like a COD / Zerg player will not work here.

I played during the open beta and have been logging in over the years to watch it evolve.

    Pros:
    Free to play.
    4 mech sizes.
    Great graphics, sound, gameplay.
    Mech building.
    Trial mechs.
    Faction gameplay.
    Community gameplay.
    Has Steam achievements.
    Tutorial mode.
    Good instructions.
    Joystick support.
    Mech and Pilot modules.

    Cons:
    Veteran players.
    Steep game learning curve.
    Steep grind.
OP mech builds and OP mech weapons.
Huge selection of mechs in store for sale.
    4 hangar slots.

The connectivity issues are fine considering internet from the Philippines is usually horrible. The tweaks to make it more available on lower end computers has also been working wonders since release. The mech construction system is quite solid in my opinion and very fun to play around with and combat is always enjoyable for me as a casual player. The mech designs are just amazing compared to original Battletech/Mechwarrior designs and art.

If you're looking for a nice game to pass the time with while piloting a giant robot and blowing up other giant robots, then Mechwarrior Online is a good game to try out. If you like customization, then it's definitely a good game for you try out. Just make sure you read up before buying your first mech. You will get a huge bonus in currency for your first 25 games as a new player. Don't waste it (but you can always start over with a new account).

It's F2P so here's what you have to pay for: Paintjob, cosmetics, XP conversion (not necessary but it speeds things up), and Hero Mechs (mechs with a currency bonus when you play but they are by no means better than regular mechs). Overall it has a good F2P setup which lets me pay when I want to and it doesn't strongarm me into opening my wallet (which is how I prefer my F2P games).

The download is not that big and you should be able to patch up quickly. Check the video guides, do the tutorial and take the trial mechs out for a spin (for best experience, make sure you pick a Champion Trial Mech since it is fully upgraded compared to regular Trial Mechs. Champions have a (C)).

A great game that adds some much-needed depth to the FPS genre. The only marks against it are for not living up to its full potential by launch. The User Interface is useable but lacking in many respects, and there are only two game modes. That said, this is stil what it was called some time ago: "a thinking man's FPS."

As a fan of first person shooters the game play should be at least mildly familiar. The real difference being a lack of respawns and an actual need to play as a team. This is not Call of Duty in giant walking tanks. It is definitely more of a tactical game. You need to spend some time thinking about your position in relation to your team and how you can be most effective with your current load out.

Which brings me to the Mechlab. In Mechwarrior, buying and building your own 'Mechs is a huge part of the game. As you fight you will earn c-bills. You can then use these c-bills to purchase 'cannon' variant 'Mech platforms which you can then customize as your see fit. And customizations are near limitless. Your only real limitations are weight and hardpoints. Hardpoints are the parts of any 'Mech you mount weapons too. Each variant of each chassis boasts different hardpoint configurations, making each 'Mech feel unique. And there are a lot of 'Mechs to choose from. At the time of launch there were 21 'Mech platforms each with their own list of variants, for a total of 99 different 'Mechs.

Now not all variants can be purchased with c-bills. 'Hero' 'Mechs need to be purchased with 'Mech Credits or MC. MC is real world currency you can use to purchase certain things within the MW:O universe. The two most common are the above mentioned 'Hero' 'Mechs and new mechbays. Mechbays are like garage slots for your 'Mechs. You are given four, but if you want to have more than four 'Mechs at a time you'll need to use real world currency to get more. As you master 'Mechs though, you can always sell them off and purchase new ones. You don't lose progress you have made with 'Mechs when you sell them either, so no worries there. If you decide to repurchase the 'Mech in the future, you will still have any of the upgrades you've gotten for the chassis unlocked.

And yes, as you play in any given chassis, you are awarded experience which you can then use to unlock upgrades on that chassis and modules to be equipped to the 'Mech to unlock certain abilities like faster base capture rates or a seismic sensor to show enemy mechs on your mini map that you can't see through your view point.

Graphically the game is absurd when compared to other free to play titles. It's a gorgeous game with great art design. The 'Mechs look great the maps keep getting better with each new one that is released (one about every two months). Game play is smooth and as of the most recent release of the game relatively bug free. Many of the bugs that plagued the closed beta and the early open beta have been cleared up, and work continues on the existing ones. There isn't any soundtrack to the game, but the weapon sounds are okay and the A.I. voice that informs you of your status or incoming attacks is done well and is well implemented. Game balance seems to sway back and forth, though, at this particular moment is in pretty good shape. Most of the weapons at your disposal are viable and usable in the position they are designed to fill.

The real shame of the game is the lack of any REAL tutorial. The learning curve here is steep and I can see where it would send people packing. It takes time and game play to really learn the nuances of each 'Mech and your first few matches will be spent dying and then watching the rest of your team play. It can be daunting and disheartening. I truly recommend getting on the MWO forums and finding a group to play with. As a solo player with no one to really work with, you'll find yourself losing. A lot. And your frustration level rising with each subsequent lose. When you join a team the game becomes infinitely more fun. Development time would be well spent on an in game voip integration. That would do leaps and bounds for new player retention in my opinion.

A few of my other complaints are not about features that are in the game, but ones that aren't. While many of the features are on the slate for future release, there is no real ETA on any of them. Certain game mechanics that would improve the game play immensely and I feel like should have been in the game before they launched. Two of the biggest being better hit detection and the collision mechanic that was removed early into open beta. The community warfare would be nice, but is in active development so I am not going to gripe too much about that.

All in all the game is progressing nicely. With two updates a month, both usually releasing new content and bug fixes, and a well planned road map of future features. As the game sits it is fun and a good time sink. Easily picked up for an hour here or there to play a few matches. Once community warfare goes live, I can see the game taking on a whole new life as people sink hours into controlling land and holding territory.

    Graphics...

Over all am quite pleased with this games looks i don’t have the best GPU but on Medium quality it still look damn good, even with all the setting put down to low it still look good and doesn’t really affect your gameplay.

    Sound...

The sound effects are in my opinion awesome I think the nailed the weapons sounds down to a key only down side is there is no backing track atm so other than the stomp of your team mates mechs it can be quite, silent when you’re not in the heat of battle.

    Game Play...

Do you like Giant Robots with massive firepower that can take a ton off damage and keep going if so this is the game for you, the controls take a bit of getting use too even now i still sometimes forget ware my feet are pointing and ram a team mate, but overall it fun.

Can you solo play this game Yes you can but i think you really need to be in a group with coms to really excel in this game it all about team work and in PUG matches you rarely get that.

Game mode It most deftly needs more game mode this is a big failing you got assault with is a team death Mach victor is the one to kill all the open’s mech or cap there base, and Cap which is a resource race to gain 750 points before the oppents you do this by capping several bases scatted on the battle field. Thought both modes are fun i still feel that they need more something that a bit different from Kill or cap.

    FTP...

This game is free to play and with any free to play game you can use real money to buy items, not this game is not pay to win there is nothing other than cosmetic items and Hero mechs you can get in with in game money. So Hero mechs these mechs are unique mechs that can only be pay for with real world money so are the Over powered no actually there a couple i say were underpowered the main bonus you get with them is a 30% cbill (in game money) boost and a Custom Camo for that mech, I do like this pricing if you want to get a mech and not grind for it you can buy one or you can grind what i think IGP will make their money from is Premium Time which basically gives u a boost to XP and Cbills for a set amount of time.

    Final thoughts...

This is a very fun game with a lot of potential i think it needed another 6 months before being moved out of Beta and i think the most of the community would agree with me but if you’re after a mech game that a lot of fun but requires a degree of thought then i would recommend you download this game but you really need to read the help guides of the MWO forums first.

But still offers a lot of fun and exciting battles from novice to veteran players.

MWO has potential and a lot of promise. There has not been a single BattleTech game in over a decade. Now we got one. Jump in the Mechwarrior!

As a casual player, I can spend hours playing and just lose track of time.

Unfortunately, many of the negative scores you find here are the hardcore crowd who think they got cheated and are now trying to "teach PGI a lesson". If it's not their way, then it's no way. Could PGI be more transparent, yes. However, since they are a smaller company than say Blizzard or CCP, development takes a bit longer. If you listen you the No Guts No Galaxy podcast, they have the devs on a lot, and have had 2 in-depth interviews with the devs about upcoming features. The hardcore crowd will get what they want, it'll just take more time with a smaller staff to get it implemented. In the meantime, if you're looking to have a ton (or several tons) of casual Mechwarrior action, this is your place.

See you on the battlefield, Mechwarrior!

This is a very fun free to play game about huge battlemechs, the F2P business-model is fair and the game runs smoothly. There's certainly enough maps and they are adding more, only 2 gamemodes though. the game has good in-depth mech customization as well.

Just two patches ago we got the 1st phase of the long awaited Community Warfare. Phase 2 is expected to drop on us in October 2014 if not sooner. The Clan nerf patch that helped to even out the game just came to us on Friday Sept 5th and it made a huge difference in making game play more balanced.

Yes it was slow to get moving, and seemed to drag on for the first couple years, but now it is really picking up. I am very happy I stuck with it.

Started playing this about 9 months ago and have had a really good time playing it and meeting the community. I started playing just before the Ui revamp and there has been consistent content and improvements in twice monthly patches ever since.

There is a fair amount to it and a learning curve and the weapons systems and battle style are really punishing if you do not play for your team.

    The Positive:-
    Looks fairly good.
Feels like stomping around in a heavy machine. The separate Torso/ legs control mechanism (like a tank) is a little complicated and takes a while to get used to but adds a lot when you get the hang of it.
Armoured tactics work, focused fire, reverse slopes, co-ordinating spotting and 'artillery' etc.
A good team based tactical game
Essentially free to play (but you do need to spend a little money to get more mechbays in all probability if you intend to play it for any time).
Good customisation mini-game, you can customise the mechs almost infinitely.

20 years or so of back story going back to the FASA battletech tabletop game.

    Dedicated and fairly fanatical community.

PGI the developer have been fairly good at communicating their intentions since January (but I understand this has not always been the case...)

    The Negative:-
Can be a little unstable at times. (although this has got better since I have been playing it with many fix's..still a nasty ongoing desynch issue though that some suffer that needs to be be resolved.)

Limited servers, all in Canada are not ideal for those with high pings to Canada.

The strategic element has taken a very long time to arrive (called Community Warfare and its due as top priority by the end of this year.) and without it gameplay is pretty limited to 3 derivatives of 12 vs12 team death match's and collecting mechs. Its a 'grind'.

Maps are pretty good but they are quite limited in number at this time.

Beginners tutorials are extremely limited and you have to search around quite a bit to get beyond being more than a target.

20 years or so of back story going back to the FASA tabletop game....appears to sometimes hamstring the developer.

Constant sales and new mechs for money can be intrusive and some of the mechs are EXTREMELY expensive, you do not have to buy them of course, but its there..(this is a negative with all free 2 play games though and not one specific to MWO, f2p games unfortunately have to fund themselves in some way, they are businesses. )

All in all a good and fun experience so far, am looking forward to the future of this game because it has a lot of scope and will hopefully continue to get better and better.

The game make you really feel piloting a huge robot: I am often hidden behind a building or a hill. I generally try to show, shoot and go back hiding. Often, part of my mech is still behind the building firing, and half my weapon only shoot the building.
The game has slowly evolve (it is why I put only a 8). But now, it gets a lot of different maps and 4 different game mode (one where you have to assault a huge base, and you have 4 mechs to drop during the battle).
There is pretty much no bug now.

MW:O is a turbulent game. With a poorly handled launch, and frankly the following year or so, the developers did not do well with the game. However, with the removal of IGP as publishers, PGI have taken great strides in repairing the game to make it enjoyable and worth your while.

If you haven't played MW:O, or indeed any MechWarrior game before, it is a game of giant mech combat, although unlike previous games which have been much more grounded in simulation, MW:O is much easier to access for new players. There are a variety of 'Mech chassis, at the time of writing over 40, and each is divided into one of four weight classes, from 'light' to 'assault'. Each 'Mech has different hardpoints and equipment, and specialises in different types of combat, such as sniping or brawling.

Another important part of the game is customisation, of which there is lots of. Heavily based on the BattleTech table top war game of which MechWarrior originated from, players are able to modify armour, weapons, equipment and more to create their own personal variants of 'Mechs, meaning that you never quite know what your opponent is packing.

The combat itself can be incredibly addictive, taking parts both from the slower paced previous games with much more confined, arena style maps ensuring combat can be both slow and strategic and quick and brutal. Newbies can expect to make many mistakes that will usually get them killed, although if they are willing to stick with the learning curve, can find an incredibly rewarding game underneath.

This is not without bad points, of course. MechWarrior fans of previous games may find it frustrating that the game values arena gameplay more than open field combat. Furthermore, the weapon values have been balanced in a way that means combat will always be relatively close range, although the sniper or missile support roles are still entirely viable.

This of course leads to the most controversial element of MechWarrior: Online. The Free2Play business model. This has had some ups and downs, and still has some sore areas. For example, purchasing paints and camos can be highly expensive in real world money. Likewise, many may find it insane that the 'pre-order' packs for new 'Mechs can easily go into the hundreds of dollars for the top tiers.

However, this is of course forgetting that MechWarrior: Online is a relatively small game in terms of audience, and caters for enthusiasts. And, to say that MechWarrior: Online requires money to play, is entirely incorrect. Every 'Mech in the game can be purchased with the in-game currency 'c-bills', along with nearly every piece of equipment, weapon or upgrade. Indeed, much of this can only be purchased with c-bills. Restricted real-world currency items are limited to colours, camos, 'hero' 'Mechs, which are simply alternative variants with unique camos, and cockpit decorative items. Hence, the game is entirely playable without spending a cent, and in many ways this justifies the high prices.

The final element is variety of gameplay. This has been another sore point for some time as MechWarrior: Online has previously been limited to skirmish style matches, which lack the strategic depth many have come to expect from a MechWarrior title. Recently, however, PGI have released the much anticipated Community Warfare game mode, which allows players to compete on a real time 3D map of the Inner Sphere, choosing to fight for IS houses or Clans, and creating unit groups and competing in new attack/defend game modes and maps. This adds a new element of gameplay that is sure to be expanded upon in the future.

So, in summary, MechWarrior: Online has had a bumpy road. There is no doubt about it that the game was poorly handled early on, either by publisher or developer, and didn't achieve many of its goals. However, it would seem a new era for PGI has dawned, and with a sudden jump in content, game modes, community interactivity and balancing, there has never been a better time to check it back out.

PGI is doing a great job updating this game and balancing out the mechs (Mechs that were bad before are getting an increase of popularity due to the quirk system and clan mechs are not just better versions of IS ones anymore, but rather an option which rewards player skill). Also, everyone can get good damage, kills and what not. It does not depend on your mech too much, but rather on how you play and the decisions you make.

Graphics are good, even though on my below average PC I can barely play on medium with 30 FPS.

All in all, right now it's a great game and I'd recommend that you play it and make an opinion for yourself. Also, try not to listen to old reviews, a lot has changed since their time period.

It's developers listen to the community and make a great effort to try and balance all the different weapons that the game allows for, and they come up with some interesting solutions that force players to think about making balanced loadouts instead of just running out there with as many of the same powerful weapon that you can fit.

This has, however, made a bunch of people very angry. Don't ask me why, because I find it interesting that a fight doesn't end instantly because some guy had so much firepower in a single click that he could kill anything with one hit.

If you're into a tank/robot style ranged weapons combat game, this might be for you. You can buy more mechs in the game and upgrade them with weapons, engines, armor and so on, with resources you earn in matches. With real money you can buy "Mech Credits" that you can use to buy premium time, which boosts your XP and resource gain, or you can use it to buy mechs, including "hero" and "champion" mechs, which are only buyable with those, these work by either boosting XP or resource gain, but are otherwise the same as the ones you can with your earned resource. Additionally you can use the MC to buy skins, colors and decoration for your mechs, which allows for some pretty cool customization.

Development is ongoing and a bunch of very cool looking features are on the way in the next 6 months. It's still a relatively new game, development wise, and you will find problems and issues sticking out, but the fun mech combat is second to none and it looks to be getting better.

And hey, it's free. Play some hours, if you don't like it, at least you didn't spend any unrefundable money!
Another great thing is that you can play just a week a month and then whenver you come back, two patches will have been round and there'll be a new mech, maybe a new map, a bunch of fixes and other things changed! I love reading update notes for my games, and it means you always have something to look forward to

It is F2P, and after the "Cadet Bonus" you receive in your first 25 games to get you started, the grind for a new mech is definitely a grind. But if you're enjoying the game that's no issue. And if you want a change of scenery then you can play one of the many Trial Mechs to try out a different chassis. At the end of the day though, the game IS NOT pay to win. You can get hold of anything you need with gameplay currency, apart from the newest of the new mechs when they first appear in the game.

Game modes are unfortunately limited to conquest and team deathmatch more or less. The addition of the Community Warfare mode allows you to take a retinue of 4 mechs (within a 240 ton limit) into a single fight to try and overrun a base which makes for more a grand scale battle, but the balance of those missions seems a bit questionable in my experience.

Anyway, the game is honestly fun. For a free to play strategic shooter, it's worth a few hours a week of playtime. And if you can pay for some premium time (increased income for matches) it makes the grind a lot less grindy. Or if you wait for deals, you can buy mechs relatively cheaply. Good hunting Mech Warriors.

    2. You pay 20$ for a nice mech, and 3 months later a new mech comes out that is designed specifically to kill your mech, and it costs another $20

    3. The maps are absolutely terrible, and not balanced at all.

    4. Heavy-handed attempts at fixing balance serve no other purpose than to break intricate mech builds and render all your hours of effort obsolete every couple of months.

    5. The majority of people playing this game nowadays are apparently not bothered by 1-4 and play all the time. The game has a VERY steep learning curve because of all the time and $ that goes into building proper mechs, and because of this new players are scared off by how expensive and hard it is.

It is possible to not play this meta but you will be at a disadvantage. This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

This means, that high shooting-skills like reactions and awareness will pay off for sure, but also a deep understanding of reasonable mech loadouts (strategy) or right choice of useful combat zones (tactics) gives great benefits. That point makes the biggest difference to its brother in mind: World of Tanks (WoT). MWO shares with this very popular game the FreeToPlay and Anti-PayToWin architecture.
You can get into MWO with instant PvP combat on a trial mech together with 23 other players. The matchmaker tries to balance such a so called 12v12 PuG (randomly merged teams) for a close finish. You can also jump in a battle with a group of 4 (lance) or 12 (company) mates. In that case you will meet similar team structures on the other side. At the moment two game modes are provided: conquest (get resource points out of capturing bases) and assault (kill all opponents or get their base). Further modes are promised since months. But unfulfilled promises by the developer PGI would be another story...
The first look and feel of MWO with a good performance PC is fancy, grounded on CryEnginge3. After some hours the lifeless and indestructible environment, multiple texture errors, not optimized effects or some breakdowns are a pain in your neck.
The unique experience you can get in MWO is the high AND long learning curve, besides the official BattleTech IP. No matter where you veteran come from (WoT, BF, CoD, TF, etc.), there is a long way to go to become a good MechWarrior and this can be addictive. The complexity and interdependency of different weapon mechanics, mech classes, maps, teamwork opportunities, match-up situations and so on need hours of gaming and a high resistance against frustration. Even more because there are no introductions, tutorials or PvE-missions. As a reward for invested time you get a big stock of (necessary) equipment or access to special modules. They provide for example better sensors, visuals or movement and can not be bought with real money right at the start. You have to learn it the hard style, but spectator mode and the grown-up and international community helps significantly.

MWO is a recommendation, if you played the previous games of the series with fun. Same for other Robo-Mechas-Tank-sims or -shooters as Heavy Gear, Steel Battalion, Front Mission Evolved, World of Tanks, Hawken and so on. Supporters of BattleTech in general, its table top game or other spin offs can take a look on it, but will have a rough start. At least it is the right choice for (semi-)competitive-PvP-gamers, which dislike the idea of respawn and appreciate substantial outcome from the needed combination of different skills and team play.
Thus its hard difficulty MWO is NOT the right choice for newbies. Even more as the high priced, so called Hero-Mechs will not deliver any high value in challenge. They are just "bling-bling" chassis. So keep your money and save it for mech-bays or premium time, to minimize the grind.

Summing all this up: 6 points out of 10 for me. And that means PGI sadly did not add strength or popularity to BattleTech or MechWarrior as a concept of SciFi yet. There are still some additions promised by PGI, but I would not bet on something substantial in the next months...

The game suffers from frequent crashing (on many different platforms) and the inability to rejoin a match after disconnecting or crashing is incredibly frustrating.

The pay model is outrageous and the grind to do anything is equally outrageous. Initially, you will unlock large amounts of in game cash (C-Bills) via Achievements, which gives a false sense of what your income looks like and new players frequently purchase a new Mech thinking their income will be steady.

There are only two game modes, deathmatch and deathmatch. The other game mode, where you capture points, almost never comes into play until late game. Deathmatches frequently end with light Mechs hidding and waiting the timer out.

Lastly, there is no real sense of progress other than grinding through all the various Mechs and variants.

Definitely a pay to win game, with purchased "hero" mechs being far superior than their free brethren. Overall, a game or two brings a half hour of fun but any more than that is just a grind. If the game had more depth, I would consider purchasing mechs, equipment and accessories but I see no point with the game's current state.

Final conclusion, the game never made it out of beta.

The bottom line is… Does Mechwarrior Online deliver?

The short answer is a strong Yes but with major caveats that make portions of MWO seem incomplete and downright clunky as Piranha Games continues to develop this title. There are frustrating refinement issues as a result of the small dev team and development approach adopted by PGI. The road has been rocky for PGI and MWO. By 2013, the word was MWO was a shameless money grab and a lost opportunity to be something great by a disinterested, tunnel-visioned development company. PGI however maintained that their numbers were always strong from a silent fan base despite the bad press and angry fans represented a vocal minority. By 2015, MWO has survived and grown to over half a million registered players (probably 5% playing), a greatly improved community relations approach, increased staff and talent, added and evolved game content, launched servers in Europe and Asia, and has plans to add Steam as an additional distribution method.

So where does MWO stand presently?

Free to Play – This is a free to play game that has successfully negotiated the hazy line between pay-to-win and grind-to-insanity. Grinding for in game currency isn't as mindless as some other games and you can build very competitive mechs. If you have the money but don’t have the time, you can pay for content that will save you grind time and effort (such as hero-level mech). Unfortunately for the grinding player, some things (such as mech-enhancement modules) are over-priced and newly introduced mechs are only available with real money at first so paying players tend to dominate game play when new mechs are injected into the game. It takes about 3 months before these new mechs become available for purchase with grindable currency.

Multiplayer – MWO delivers solid and refreshing mech combat. Public matches are easy to access offering 12v12 combat that feels more than adequate (and sometimes glorious) as the teams tactically engage each other in rolling brawl fests of blistering lasers and canon fire. There is plenty of long range sniping, missile barrages, and air strikes to be had as well. Private matches between organized teams can be accessed from group menu as long as at least the captains of each team are premium subscribed players. These are often used for various tournaments and league matches. Currently in playable beta is planetary combat based on the classic star map of Battletech. This feature represents another pillar of the game and supports attack, defend, and counter attack modes.

SinglePlayer – There no single player experience in MWO much to the disappointment of fans. PGI has said this could be added in the future after all the goals of the multiplayer game have been adequately completed.

Graphics – Visually enticing and exciting graphics but this is where more and development is needed. The mechs themselves are beautifully designed (if you can call a mechanized bipedal war machine beautiful) and are unequivocally superior to any designs of past MW titles. Newer maps tend to be rich and visually varied with cityscapes, lunar, industrial, alien marshes and barren deserts. Older maps produced during beta and up to about 2014 tend to be smaller, dated looking, use repeated textures and are otherwise beta-level content. PGI has a team that is currently reworking older maps to update them making them far larger, more interesting, adding day and night cycles, destroyable content such as trees and streetlamps.

Over all MWO is a solid combat action sim surrounded by layers of potentially wow-factor content if ever finished. The key to MWO is connecting with a team as solo public play feels more like grinding and team play feels more like the real game. MWO of 2015 has more to offer than MWO of 2013. It’s fun and engaging with friends on the field but needs work on nearly all the layers of features. If PGI can address those, MWO will achieve that wow-factor.

    Pros.
    1. Its Mechwarrior
    2. Graphics are rather good. 3. The community is surprisingly non toxic these days, it used to be pretty bad, and some top clans are still pure cancer. Cons. 1. very poorly thought out, skill and Mech progression system, encouraging you into spend real money. 2. incredibly bad interface, Overly complex Mech customization interface (MW4:V/BK/M was better)

    2. incredibly bad interface, Overly complex Mech customization interface (MW4:V/BK/M was better)
    2. Non cosmetic premium items, and golden/premium Mechs, was a blatant milking of the mechwarrior fanbase.
    3. Gameplay is fairly basic and poorly balanced due to addition of the newest premium Mech, and nurffing/rendering useless of previous premium Mechs rendering them Obsolete.
    4. High level Clan wars manipulation with mass accounts, and poor administration of Clan wars activities, by the Developers mean that people who spam alt account clans, to set their clans up for victory dominate the game mode.
    5. Maps are pitifully small and phone booth like considering that you are in a towering war machine.
    6. Underhanded collusion and corporate pressure to get another Mechwarrior project shut down (Legends). you will have to google it, it took a long time for details of what happened to come out (it has been revived recently)
    7. Sound effects are really bad and repetitive, you get really sick and tired of the audio in this game the music is also garbage.
    8. No real exploration of the mechwarrior lore.
    9. Game has always been extraordinarily buggy, It is better now than it has ever been bug wise but wow man where there some major **** ups on the part of the developer.

I like it because It has characteristic that too often are missing from others free multiplayer products:
    1) Fast matches ..about ten minutes.
    2) Casual matches are possible and fun 3) Entertaining even in solo queue. 4) Polite community! 4 bis) Polite community!! (it is worth to mention it two times) 5) Can be played totally free: grinding is present but is reduced by frequent sales

    5) Can be played totally free: grinding is present but is reduced by frequent sales and events usable with in game currency
    6) If you want to spend some money It has also lots of sales, free gift and events for real money.
    7) Good graphics for a simulator
    8) Lots of references from Battletech ....for old school people like me .
    9) It needs brain and fast reflex both.
    10) Reading guides, tutorials, and so on on this game it's not mandatory to have fun (and be good at) ...just pratice and maybe some previous experiences with old Mechwarrior games (4 example mechwarrior 2 or 3 or 4)
    11) Playable with old pc
    12) Registration is fast and hassle free trough steam ...also it does not install sneaky unwanted software.
For me it is a eigth in it's category (free multiplayer sci-fi simulation game) but I didn't play it competitively so I can't rate that aspect of the game.
Part of the fun comes with seeing and playing Iconic mechs....If you does not care about Battletech franchise lower my score a little

The first look into this game is amazing if you like the francise.
But if you try to point bad things out in the forums, then you get banned pretty fast.
Unless you are a fanboy stay away from this game and use your time for something else.

    - no pay to win

    Contra:
    - Playerbase is small. about 700-2500 players at the same time online. But its enough.
    - some events are senseless pewpew events. but you can win some stuff. In this time, players are fighting with mech's and weapons only for the event goals.
    - hard to learn
    - many functions and configs

MWO is one of the best games i ever player. But its also one of the hardest game to master.
You cant go inside and shot around like in War Thunder, World of Tanks etc. You need some time to, master the game.

Non capisco questi voti negativi, il gioco è fatto bene, ci sono sempre mech free che ruotano e ti permettono di divertitrti e poi puoi farti il tuo mech con 10-12 ore di gioco.

I have to say for a free to play game this one does the job. But be warned this game does have a huge learning curve.

Great game! I really enjoy shooting other people mechs. The gameplay is great, Making and building our mech is fantastic! you can change a lot of aspects of your mech! like armor, engine, ammo, heat and jump jets and more.

Grahpics are good. like the mech and their cockpit is good. You got an startup animation which i enjoy watching everytime i go and play. It feels like the negative

It feels like the negative reviews are botted. But keep in mind that most of them are old. like from the 2012 to 2018 era and the game is not pay to win. just find a mech that suites you and your good to go.
for you who is i having freezing issues it is probably because your pc is not good at runing this game.

whoever who is being negative in 2021 is wrong.

Nice gameplay and deep strategy for the latest incarnation of Mechwarrior. Too bad it lacks any kind of Single Player content.

Slightly overpriced, but a more than worthy successor to one of PC gaming’s greatest franchises that nails the important part: combat.

MechWarrior Online does a pretty good job in balancing out the gameplay and gives you lots of BattleMechs, weapons and items to buy, but it's got only two game modes and it's definitely not that fun.
