MH had a lot of potential, but completely failed to deliver. It's kinda fun for a single play through, but there just isn't enough content or fun to be had to justify investing much time or money into it. The developers treat the players horribly. You will get banned from the game by simply asking questions like why is the loot so bad or why they keep censoring their forums. They will do this no matter how much money you have spent and you have no recourse at all.

The debut kind of bombed so they had to shift from a many player F2P model to a few dedicated hardcore player model. this means they have to milk the small player base for every cent they are worth, including exp and item find boosts. So the game is pretty bad without them. What started out as a fun game has turned into a nickle and dime fest at every turn.

Every patch it still a nightmare with little testing and days of downtime. And, as I said, if you even question this, you risk a ban and will lose every cent you put into the game.

On top of that, patches come out fast and furious, but without being tested...leading to stupid amounts of bugs, numerous small patches meant as fixes that really dont ever fix anything, and tons of download time. Half or more of the characters are completely broken and unplayable at any given time....soon as they fix 1 hero, they break 2 more. If you dont mind lots of bugs, boring gameplay, broken characters, and the worst loot system ever....then by all means play this game.

The game is grindy, but this style of game has always leaned in that direction you either like it (or can deal with it) or you don't. Want the best gear or a new hero for "free"? Well, be prepared to put some time in because its gonna take a while.

There does tend to be hiccups with patches, unfortunately. Things get ironed out fairly quickly, but it happens frequently enough to make me lower my score.

What I like the most is their interactive forums. Their head developers takes inputs and incorporates it to the game. Already there's 3 stages of level difficulty and rewarding items to grind for. Soon a synergy heroes will reward player for level a hero to level 25 and 50, and even allowing maxed players to restart their hero to level 1 if they want to be in the same level with new friends.

On the side-note, because there's no auction house or credit (their game gold) trading involved, therefore there is no gold farmers shouting to sell game gold for real money. I have also heard no cases of accounts being hacked because hackers have little incentive to hack accounts.

I'm posting this grade based on 1.2 patch and giving it a 9, meaning it's not perfect or finished but has high potential. Marvel heroes should get a recognition for improvement their game at a rapid pace, If the critics are willing to do another review at the beginning of next year in 2014, I'm sure Marvel Heroes will be seen in a different light.

The new difficulty settings make the game less repetitive when playing over again as you will face new enemies and have to use new tactics. Defence has significantly been improved as well which makes investing in it a really good option. New exciting gear has been added I play as fantastic fours Thing and I found a unique item today that adds a 7% chance of releasing a shock-wave and added 2 to my speed stat. Make leveling a grind, and sell magic find potions (people that buy these are silly, they will not increase rolls on stats and Unique Cosmic chances are that low they will not affect them in a meaningful manner) Selling magic find potions are probably necessary, but also a form of gambling that will not pay off. If it does, it's a fluke, but hey you might buy more potions yeh?

The game is free, but has little to no end content for level 60's, so if you get that far you might as well quit.

X-Def coming out? Increased loot chance you say? No, the numbers of mobs are too small and timed which means that your killing rate per minute is going to be jack and all, which decreases your rate of actually finding something. I mean it might be fun, but it's exactly the same as playing whack a mole for tickets. We all know how often people are seen playing that game at the arcade...

Terminals? Short runs, xp and loot increase is negligible but I guess the devs probably find that fun too.

Bugs every patch? You bet ya. Break more things? You bet ya. Patch it in a week or two? You bet ya. Break more things? You bet ya. Slip in nerfs? You bet ya.

Good luck. If you like the game cool, if you get a Unique at level 10 and never see it drop again? That's fun apparently.

Lack of meaningful content, bad grind, poor itemisation and your hero will always look the same as the other one, no matter what you do means that this game is a 4.

my only concern is that the game is too utopian with gamers usually getting what they want from the programmers, constantly patching up the game for stronger characters. there's no distinction on who's more skilled in playing or build-making, just a bunch of players with cookie-cutter builds per character that kill enemies solely for the sake of rare items.

MH is bland, very bland. It brings nothing new to the table, goes through patches that require complete character respec and then has the nerve to overprice everything. You either end up spending the cost of just buying a game to unlock only a few characters or spend forever grinding "Eternity Splinters (ES)". Seriously, 1 splinter drops about every 8 min average. Most heroes cost 400-600 splinters. 8 x 400 3,200 min 60 53.3 HOURS, 80 hours for the 600. When you figure most SP story driven games only last 20-30 hrs then you get the sense of how tedious this game is. Now you can gear up to grind ES but you need to be fairly high level to use the gear. So expect to grind a character you might not be interested in just for the chance to grind ES. The starting characters are pretty weaksauce too. Don't expect favorites to appear free. Daredevil (which I only know because of a terrible movie), Storm (probably the best known starter), Hawkeye (who looks FABULOUS! No, really, he wears all purple), Scarlet Witch (who I never heard of) and Thing (probably the 2nd most recognizable character). If you want to play as say Spider Man, Iron Man, or Wolverine then expect to either pay out the nose or edge of your seat grinding.

Basically MH is nothing new. You'll see the same levels over and over again as well as the same enemies. The story needs way more voice acting as most of it is text boxes. It does have some cool cut scenes but they're kinda rare and don't help with the over abundance of text screens. Everything is way too much of a grind or way too expensive to justify the cost. For Marvel fans only, everyone else stick with Path of Exile.

I want to add to my review by saying that after reading some of the bad reviews that say this game has performance issues I would suggest going into your graphics options in the game if you are having issues and turning the max defeated enemies slider all the way to the left so you see no dead bodies. A lot of people don't seem to realize that the ragdoll effects of the dead enemy bodies and respawning props causes a ton of lag if you don't turn it down. I don't have a super high end system(i5 2320, NVIDIA 660ti GPU, 8 GB RAM) and I have zero issues with lag. My lag ended when I turned the max defeated enemies slider all the way down.

Long Description? A top-down third-person action game in the style of Diablo and Torchlight with no real character customization but a huge number of classes locked behind paygates, each based on a marvel hero. Not alot of content, and you'll spend 90%+ of any given character's career replaying the same repeatable missions. Many of the same balance and design issues that plague Diablo 3 exist here, especially in the form of 'kill 10,000 enemies in the hope of maybe dropping a new item you care about' loot systems and some characters being distinctly and seriously more capable than others, as well as a crafting system that seems mostly pointless.

The only question that comes up in playing this game is "Why?" Its not a real MMO as you'd understand it, it isn't competition for DCU or Champions, it doesn't tell a new story, just a watered-down rehash of the far superior Ultimate Alliance game. I can only imagine what went through their heads when they were first making this game, but it was not a good idea at any point.

I have a higher end gaming system, play multiple MMOs and have over 200 games on Steam that not share the baffling performance issues that this game has even after "Major performance increases". I drop to 2-3 fps in busier zones constantly making the game unplayable. Their patches add more costumes for sale and heroes on top of a system that is completely broken due to the defense mechanic being completely inadequate for any character. Many classes have fundamental issues like low spirit, spirit consumption so their talent builds are forced to invest in them. Itemization is meant to fill holes in these same weaknesses which leaves you with a character that's already half decided for you yet gives you this illusion of "full customization". Spirit the main resource works against in this game because the regen mechanic simply punishes you for using it. You will inevitably run out and use weak and boring basic powers while it slowly refills or if you are lucky enough to play a class that has a strong basic attack you will just spend your spirit on micromanaging boring aspects and rarely spend spirit. Either way that's just a boring play style in a genre that has always prided itself on fast and frantic gameplay.

Leveling is completely boring because the game changes it's idea on how you are supposed to level every week. In the end it's always running the same map over and over, and not really in the same rewarding sense of doing "boss runs" in other games because the itemization is just flat boring. They added a higher tier of gear called "cosmics" but it's simply the same drab gear with 1 skills and a random effect that really only disjoints the character's aesthetics even further by summoning demons randomly or a random damage proc. These are cool, but it doesn't make sense when the game leaves me with a less than adequate way of developing my character for survival or functionality and just adds to this to an already random chance system of progression. The maps are just completely boring and do not have very many encounters and the bosses are generally cannon fodder with unnecessary health pools. In the larger zones there are many enemies and bosses spawning, but the chaos really serves no purpose other than walking around killing things. Even though there are other people around you, everyone is generally unorganized because the goals of the zones are not very clear other "do what you want". I suppose that's enough for an ARPG fan and I'd rather enjoy this, but it's impossible when you simply cannot keep a stable frame rate.

Recently I had to download a patch 3 times. 5 gigs per download because they issued a patch, rolled it back, then repatched it again and forced the client to download all of this. The game is only 12 gigs total, so I spent over 36 hours and 3 days simply downloading before I could even play the game in any shape or form. Not everyone has an amazing internet connection.

The forum community has now devolved into nothing but over-supportive people that trash complaints about all of these things at the mere mention of any type of negativity towards the game or it's developers, so issues that have persisted since the game has launched are still there.

The only saving grace for the game is they switched to a system where you can earn your characters simply by playing... this really doesn't give a free pass for the rest of the game being completely average. This is not the replacement for Diablo 2. This isn't even the replacement for Torchlight II. Path of Exile and even Diablo 3 offer better and less frustrating experiences despite their issues. The sad thing is this game has better ideas and a better foundation, but unfortunately the Marvel license and usage of it to create the games "classes" will only create bottlenecked classes that are glued to very specific ideas and they will also have to operate with the restrictive mechanics the gameplay design has placed on them. The result is just simply disappointing and I hoped for better, but I no longer have the patience to enjoy it and I will never recommend this over other ARPGS for it is barely average.

but that is the power of visualization, this game has a long way to go.

    Marvel Heroes is ARPG game.
first of all, game graphic is nice. but game performance is bad. Also contents is small
i think Marvel Heroes should be stick to the character quality because character is best feature of Marvel Heroes.
1.11 patch was good and beginning of game.

Also, Character is the best attraction and big individuality about Marvel Heroes. Human Torch is awesome.
i'm really expecting a lot Emma including next many heroes.
Now, Clearly This game is fun.

At launch the game was incomplete no missions for level 60 heroes and still continues to have lack of anything for a max level hero to do other then farm level 55 mobs. There are heros with powers that can not be leveled up till they reach level 61-63 when the game stops at level 60. Each patch has made great promises but so far the game has stayed about the same as when it launched.

The level cap is 60 yet they only made enough content for 20-25 levels and expect you to grind the same very limited number of instances over and over for the remaining levels calling them "daily quests".

I'd recommend playing it once if you're curious about the motion-comic story, but it seems like a weak version of a game that would have been good on console, but not much to keep you playing beyond just trying out new characters.

I do find the dialogue to be very well written, but sadly that's the only thing good I can say about this game. The fact that you either have to push through the terrible game play to get a new hero, or pay to get one, adds a sense of "pay-to-win" in this game. The characters you start out with are, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Daredevil, the Thing, and Storm. This minimal choice leads to what I had brought up before, the fact that you end up in the same area with around another twenty versions of you. Which as you can imagine causes some confusion in the midst of battle. The overall game play was mediocre, and left you with a sense of depression. If you want a hero mmo, I suggest looking somewhere else, because this game wont even quench your thirst for as long as it takes to install. Expand

The game itself is really great fun, you can play as some of your favorite heroes from the Marvel Universe, and do so in a fast paced action orientated play style. The game continues to introduce new items, heroes, costumes, patches, fixes, content, and updates. The development team have a level of communication and feedback with the community that is unheard of in this industry. I have been deeply impressed with their continued improvement of the game, and with the pace of improvements. The game becomes more fun with every patch, and at this point, I have spent more than 600 hours in Marvel Heroes.

I love farming for new gear, leveling new heroes and working on builds. The new cosmic items are really cool, and the upcoming new end game content is epic fun. I love that the game gives multiple options for builds, playstyle, and content to enjoy.

The game needs a few more fixes in some areas, but those areas are already slated for fixes by the development team, with associated timelines.

I am hard to please, and have been involved with these types of games for almost 20 years. I like Marvel Heroes, and I do believe much of the bad press surrounding the game is unfounded, misinformed, and out of date.

I give this game an 8/10 and when the next round of changes come in, that could hit a 9. I won't move to 10 until a longer series of iterations are implemented.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, its an Action RPG MMO type thing that launched a couple of months ago.
    It features Marvel Comics heroes.
It could be described as Diablo derived or inspired, as it's a mouse controlled loot grinder in many respects.
And it did have a rocky start, but has been improving as the developers change stuff and add features and continue to improve it.
The different heroes have fairly distinct powers and playstyles, and although the pricing structure was a bit high for my tastes to buy the non-starter heroes, they are introducing a system which should see you able to get, (and choose) any hero within a week or two of playing time by saving up "Eternity Splinters" dropped in the game.
The graphics are nice, though they are fairly low on the "Wow!" scale, there are lots of FX as heroes powers go off, the models and animations are all between good through to excellent.
The voice acting is particularly good, with some really nice versions of characters.
The music is pretty good, though like all videogame music, repetition can lead to over-hearing it.

The gameplay itself is still a work in progress as the Devs balance and rebalance in response to the players.
Some characters fare well in the early (before level 30) story parts of the game, and then don't yet scale terribly well in the tougher end game levels.
I can see people thinking it's too easy if they play through the story and a couple of green terminals, but try the later red terminals solo or a group challenge on your own if you are a hardcore ninja gamer.
Because you have a fairly wide choice of characters to pick from (assuming you buy, get drops or use the coming Eternity Splinter system), it's possible that there is something which may appeal to everyone.
The levels are being improved upon, there is a nice random city mission coming soon (it's already on the new test server) which features a random combination of villain groups to fight, alongside simple muggings, bank robberies, maggia protection racket shakedowns, Hydra or Doombot invasions and attacks by Moloids and so on and so forth.
Yes, you will become familiar with the individual elements, but the random combinations make it feel like a new experience each time.

I'm not a Bendis fan at all, so I hated his dialogue in the storyline as much as I expected to. And the plot is rather stupid in places, but provides some sort of rationale for all the action.

I prefer to see the game as a Marvel Simulator, offering a wide array of characters and enemies to fight against, either solo or in teams. In that sense I feel the game is closer to Freedom Force or Marvel Ultimate Alliance than traditional Diablo clones.

Yes, there are still some issues to be addressed, and I was as cynical as any about stuff like the non-stacking crafting materials and relatively high hero prices. But crafting materials now stack on the test server, and the Splinter system puts your choice of hero within your grasp in exchange for playing the game.
And it really does seem to be the case that the Devs are turning this around, and making something rather good.

And there are moments, like playing as Daredevil taking on Elektra and Gorgon in Midtown on the test server, where it does feel like the elusive "playing a comic book".
And playing in a team can be great, or awful, depending on your fellow players. Usually it's at least OK, and sometimes you just "click" with people and end up doing quite a number of missions.

My 8 is a high mark, based as much on my experience on the test servers, seeing stuff which is not yet in the game, but will be soon.
It wont be to everyone's taste, and they still need to polish it up some more to get it to a diamond. But I'd say it's worth a look, since it costs nothing to try.

They slapped some marvel universe on the genre, and then charged absolutely ridiculous prices to try and buy more heroes. The initial 'get everything' pack was almost 200 dollars...., to buy all dlc would be $250. For a game that is this completely average that price point just to play with all of the heroes in this "Free to play game" is an absolute slap in the face. I literally still cannot believe they think this trash is worth $250 to anyone. It blows my mind. I saw nothing innovative, nothing new..even the loot and talent systems seemed poorly and generically done. Stay away from this waste of bandwidth to even download the title. The store is cheaper and offers package deals again, game performance has been optimized better and will continue to be tweaked, heroes skill's are being balanced and improved on a constant basis, and they plan a huge patch soon, with new game play zones and more. On top of this, their communication with players has been stellar, and many of the changes made and/or being planned are from player suggestions.

To be honest, this game got panned in most reviews for its prices, so if that was the main reason you abstained, I'd say give it a go again. With the pace that Gazillion is adding content and Marvel Heroes promises to be one of the best ARPGs of the modern generation.

No one. Maybe equal, but not more. I was basically preaching to friends about this game during the early stages. A Marvel online game, where I can be my favorite comic character? Check. Free to play. Check. Story by Bendis? Skeptical, but check.

Then I played the beta. I was worried. My laptop runs nearly all games, some at low settings quite well. These include Torchlight 2 (high), Bioshock Infinite (low), TF2 (high), Blood Dragon (medium), Borderlands 2 (medium), etc.I admit, I haven't played any large sized MMOs, but regardless of what the developers say, Marvel Heroes is NOT a MMO. It is an ARG, with heavy online hubs. This is issue one. Issue two, is the pricing. Issue three is the story. Issue four is just gameplay. But first, let us talk of issue one.

    1. The online component of this game is broken. Marvel Heroes was delayed on several occasions. When the open(ish) beta happened back in April/May, you would not have been able to find any individual of the thousands of testers, many who had little experience in beta testing or are even less likely to game heavily, who would say the game was ready for release. A month later it was released, and it was worse. Several zones are STILL broken, with such framerate drop and lag occurs you have to leave the zone and skip it (if you can). There are several loopholes you can find online to modify a few game files, and in one case disabling a graphics card, but those make the situation worse in proves the game is broken. Next, finding groups is just awful, as most people don't really want to use the message function. Then, the default settings have instance auto-grouping, which is fine at first. Then after, if you're lucky, the first instance you WILL be grouped with someone who either runs or 'clips' their way through the map to the boss, kills them, zones out. You will get nothing.

    2. The pricing is laughable. I understand, Gazillion made a game and should be paid for it. But the hero and costume prices are outrageous. For example, Deadpool, Wolverine, Spider-Man are $20. Costumes are $15. Yes, these items do drop, until their major 'patch' with an equally broken incentive system, but they are so rare to drop it has, and will continue, to drive players away. In my game, for the first month until I decided to take a break and evaluate my position on this game, I earned 1 costume and 1 hero, oh and 1 duplicate hero. Even their sales were disgusting. The many individuals who bought 'Founders Packs', with the Ultimate pack at $200 are already crying foul as they are STILL missing content that was promised (costumes and I believe 4 characters). No Squirrel Girl or Nova, for example.

    3. I have been reading Marvel my entire life. I played all four of the 'original' ARPGs on the consoles (X-Men Legends/2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance/2) and still play them. They had excellent gameplay, and more importantly, excellent stories. Enter Marvel Heroes. Which is basically Marvel Ultimate Alliance storywise, but much much worse. Bendis pulled what I am now calling "An Age of Ultron" where it is just an incredibly disappointing story. In fact, after an attempt to follow it, and realizing I had already played through that story years ago, I began skipping the cutscenes. Oh, where is Luke Cage at in the game? He is in the majority of the scenes, but nope, not a playable character.

    4. The gameplay begins quite engaging, but about halfway through the "plot" you will be bored. Especially if you lack the character drops to explore other characters. Worse, if you bought any, or a pack, you still will become bored very quickly by going through the same maps over and over again to level up the other characters. What is that you say, there are daily challenges that increase loot drops? Yes, there are, but those (other than Limbo and one other) are the same story maps with the same bosses. You just play them again and they are a higher level. Hooray. Games like MH are played for the loot. I played it for the loot. I played it for the opportunity to unlock new characters or costumes. There are no visual differences between players. None. There are dozens of Thing's, Storms, Daredevils, etc. that MIGHT have a different costume. The gear you obtain is only equip able, but not visible to yourself or anyone else. For a loot gathering game, it basically makes it pointless to collect look. Furthermore, you have no sense of progression, or challenge. I'm not saying the game needs achievements, but challenge related criteria would help keep interest (such as Borderlands/2 challenges that carry over between characters, etc). Pretty much ANYTHING to make the gameplay worthwhile and progressive.

Marvel Heroes basically made whores out of my lifelong literary companions. avoid this atrocious game, buggy, unfinished product. Marvel should be ashamed of themselves

Nothing to see here, move along. Boring, repetitive, derivative game-play, uninspired graphics and, most importantly for a free-to-play game, little value for your hard earned dollars. It's a beta game, most of Heroes are broken, there are many bugs, no high end, the pvp is a joke.
The shop prices are very expensive, and last but not least, the change without warning, because neither know what they have to charge, with the result that people pay different prices for the heroes.
This game needs 1 more year to be completed, if not ruined before.

For example bag space. Worst Idea ever to make people spend money on bag space and then not make a lot of stuff you pick up stackable. Another thing I disliked was the fact that, while I can play a hero, they are all pretty much the same. The spells look different in say, color or type of magic ability, but thats it. Casters all have the same AoE pretty much and Melee moves all look the same. So while I play the one I want, I hate that the other super hero's abilities look just like mine. The AI of mobs/trash is really bad. I would run into a group and the mobs would say something like "Hey theres one of those supers, lets get him" and then begin shooting in a direction that I'm not even in and their death animations were....sad to say the least. Now that a lot of negative is out of the way I will say that I like that they put daily type missions in the game and I like the mmo style of it. I hope they can get this game fixed and get rid of the horrid payment model they have and realize that they have a game that is good but the potential to be a great game is there they just have a few things holding it back. If they fix those things I would go back and play it hands down. Expand

All the hatred for this game is a mystery to me. Trying to figure out if you will like Marvel Heroes is simple: apply a number between 1 and 100 to your love of Marvel comics characters. I can overlook all of the gameplay issues (constant crashing during loading, etc) if it weren't for the Cash Shop. There are a ton of hero's to play, you will be able to play this game for a long time. There will be synergies for lvling more than one hero. Ex If you get daredevil to 60 you get passive dodge, or hulk to 60 you gain strength and health. This is one game I can tell I will play for a long time.

    2. Super responsive to player feed back as a company(don't always act on it but they do discuss)
    3. Extremely quick content additions and bug squashing (some taking longer than others overall good)
    4. Lots of upcoming new content.
    5. Buff for fun rather than nerf philospohy
    6. Super good about compensation for downtimes or other issues when they arise.

    Con:
    1. Limited item system( new additions already added and more coming)
    2. Limited end game modes new ones coming and planned)
    3. Slow character production time( takes awhile to make new characters)
    4. Sometimes cant hit their deadlines( good about making up for things though when things go wrong).

I was in the games Beta testing phases and the one thing that struck me then and continues to amaze me is how fast Gazillion is able to react to feedback and move forward in a positive fashion. Right before launch David Brevik came right out and said straight up and honestly that the game was going to launch rough(they had already set a date) but that they were dedicated to the long haul and would make the game better. The game did launch pretty rough (anymore though what games don't which is another sad commentary but I will leave that for another day) but there have been a lot of positive changes is a very short time.

Since launch there have been many new content additions. There have been 5 or 6 costumes added to the game plus a totally new item class: cosmic items that have neat new effects. There are plans for further changes to the item system such as sets and unique items. Gaz has also planed changes to the current end game areas and several new areas and missions have been announced.

Each playable character is in the process of getting a character review at the moment. Unlike other game companies though character review is not code for nerf the fun outta the game. In fact other than some early on nerfs most if not all recent character fixes have been buffs. Doomsaw a wonderful new developer(more on him in a sec) has said the philosophy now is nerfs are not fun and that every character will be worked on so that they are fun above all other considerations. Underlying game mechanics related to how characters play (such as the defense system) are also getting overhauls as well with many changes coming from direct player feedback.

Doomsaw is an amazing developer that recently started interacting with the community. Hes super smart and will banter with the players. Best though is he will come in and make impromptu here is what we did today threads. Little things like "looked at storm changes coming next patch/buffed this skill/ worked on this characters animations/ talked about this new endgame." Someone asks a good question about almost anything and if its something he can get an answer for from the developer team he does. Its just astounding how big a change this one person has made in their company and community. Go read his dev blogs they are awesome.

I will admit game started way rough but it is improving all the time and if they can pull off the things they have planned game will be awesome. I do believe if they cant pull things off as planned that they will work on them till they are something fun. I have a HUGE amount of faith in this game now.

First, it was a mistake to bill this as an MMO I've been playing MMO's from the beginning and this shares little or no resemblance to one. Yes, you see other people running around in open areas but the similarity basically ends there.

Second, the prices for characters/costumes at release was certainly too high. I had purchases a founders pack prior to release, so this really didn't have any impact on me I've purchased a couple of other characters, STASH tabs, etc. using the in-game currency included with founders pack (for which I paid $59.99 i believe which was a reasonable price to me for a video game I'll be playing for many hours).

With those two factors out of the way, how is the game itself? I find it highly entertaining it's a fun action RPG (NOT MMO). I'm actively playing 7 heroes ranging in level from 45 to 17 (I have others that I haven't started yet). The heroes play very differently from one another, so even repeating the same content is still entertaining (this should be familiar territory for ARPG fans).

The servers have also been very stable for me with little or no lag (one zone in the game seems laggy for me none of the others). I haven't encountered any serious bugs.

The game certainly has shortcomings primarily, to me, the classes (characters) need a good bit of work to bring them in line with each other in terms of playability. All that I've played seem good during story mode (which carries you to the low to mid 20's), but many suffer from the crazy scaling of enemies at higher levels being one shot repeatedly by trash mobs is not exactly fun and only a few characters can avoid that fate.

Many things in the game need to be tweaked item stats, costs for crafting, scaling of many abilities (too many are "one hit wonders'). However, these are being addressed already the game is significantly different from where it was on release and there's very clear evidence that the design and development team is receptive and responsive (which, sadly, seems a rarity).

Bottom line for me if you're a fan of action RPG's and you like the Marvel Universe, the game is worth a try. If you're looking for an MMO or are not used to the ARPG model of playing, the game may not be what you're looking for.

From an august patch they will introduce a new item that you can collect from mobs drop and that will permit you to "buy", with a certain amount of drops, the character you want. So it's true that at the start you can choose only five characters but after some time with the game you have the opportunity to choose the character you want. And that's great.

This, and much more changes they announced (like a new client), are the outcome of the active confrontation in forums of the developer with the community. Some kind of interaction I've sincerely never seen before in other games and that is giving this game a really bright future.

As for the gameplay it's what you'd expect from an ARPG, personally I've sunk more hours into this than D3. Most the heroes(classes) are well designed and reflect their iconic marvel counterpart well, the skills are fun to use and there's an ongoing story for players to take part in as well as an end-game that revolves around item hunting as you'd expect from most ARPGS.

The game got panned by critics and whilst a lot of the negative feedback was warranted most of them didn't give the game longer than 30 minutes, it really does bloom as you play more and with the impending patches that include both fixes, content and heroes the game can only get better.

To me a FTP game comes down to is it "pay to win" or not. This game is not PTW. So that's a green light on a fair game

First i'd like to mention how easy it was to make a meta critic account. It took almost 5 seconds. Secondly, how easy it is to become a critique here. All you really need is a youtube account, twitter or a random website that can be about anything.

First, i'd like to say with massive feedback the prices of heroes and costumes have gone down. That's cool, the game's a bit cheaper if you chose to play that way. Comparing the prices atm to prices of other ftp games, like warframe for example. It's honestly on par. The skins for warframe cost $15 and the highest costume in MH costs around like $13. ...

No way is this cash shop "intruding" it's pretty on par with any ftp games.

the gameplay, is getting better. Some known issues with "itemization" meaning gear that's actually worth hunting. They released "cosmic gear", which is a decent step in valuable gear worth hunting.

They need to get better in gear that's worth it honestly. Atm It's not there. I play majority of the heroes, and I can arguably say every hero has 2 items out of 5 that are completely useless. They don't roll anything of benefit to the actual hero.

I find it hard to build heroes, when you have 2 gear slots that offer no value to you. Artifacts seem random and the best ones are just increases to your overall damage. Or dodge.

I can't do a crazy build, like I can with other games atm. Every hero has like 1-3 good builds, that just revolve around 1 skill that does the most damage.

Gear seems to have no effect on your character progression. It just seems to be by your level. Again it;s mostly finding gear that has "x" value to that one skill your building your hero around. It doesn't lead to much versatility.

That's not to say other games have versatility, I mean...pretty much D3. Pick a skill, your character revolves around the skills you chose. That's the best way to explain it. I would've liked it to revolve around gear, but nope.

Optimization. Wow, is this game poorly optimized. Like I have a pretty solid computer. A i5 with a gtx 460 sli. I get 20 fps in areas with alot of people. With all the animations spilling out and all the rag doll dead bodies, your card has to render alot of stuff.

They have this feature to lower friendly particle effects, but it doesn't seem to help much. I would've liked a more reduced amount.

Heroes, it's what the games about. The skill trees on some of these heroes are useless. Some powers are completely useless. They need to revamp some of the heroes. Like they gave cyclops a melee tree, the guy who gets one shot by air gets a melee tree? interesting.

Some heroes, need to play like they do comic wise. Like IM, his repulsor animations are these blasts of light. They should be elongated lasers right? you should see a huge explosion of lasers and missles correct? ...obviously to give a good IM experience you need to match his awesome powers, but here lies the problem.

You know that particle effect from other players? would'nt your screen explode if you had lasers and missles and explosions? here lies the fundamental balance that the game is struggling to do. It needs to find a balance of great hero experience with out making the screen die.

The game needs hero revamps, optimization, end game modes, rewarding loot.

^ those are major issues. In any arpg to have. I have played all the arpg's out in the market atm. Each one has atleast 3 out of 5 of those examples I used. This game has all 5.

Why am I so optimistic? the dev team is the hardest working bunch I have ever seen. It takes D3 like 1 and a half year and counting to do anything about itemization. They have done nothing. In 1 month this game actually changed alot.

PoE still struggles with De-sync a deal breaking arpg experience for me. Yet nothing is done.

I applaud the hard work of the devs who talk with the community alot and actually work for their game. While there still needs to be work, I have faith in these guys.

Plus what other game won't charge you for DLC? it's a pretty sweet deal. Your time won't be wasted in the game as you can log back in a year and don't have to pay for additional content.

I mean it's like we forgot D3 server issues that kept killing HC players for 4 months straight untill they fixed it. It's like we forget PoE server issues and un-finished story content.

Lets not forget how games start and that they need time to develop. I trust these guys to develop the game at a very fast pace. Faster than PoE or D3.

Marvel Heroes is an ever evolving ball of awesomeness. I admit, I signed up for beta, played a few hours and then un-installed. This game has come so far since release with more still needed, but I must stress that Gaz is by far the best development team I have ever interacted with. These people are pouring their blood, sweat and tears into this game and it shows through in the feedback/results they put forth. This game truly is free to play, however, I choose to support it with my hard earned money because I personally feel that the reward is more than worth it. The game is not perfect and there are still issues to be resolved, but I have complete faith in what it will prove to be in the days, weeks, months and years to come. Just give it a chance or perhaps a second like myself and see if MH is for you. I think a lot of folks will be pleasantly surprised. Expand

What a frackin difference 6 weeks makes. Since launch we have seen two sales, two xp/item find weekends (The second of which is going on as we speak 7-19-2013), serious patches that buff characters instead of nerfing them, two patches to address defense, a major percentage based defense fix incoming, xp buffs, a new tier of items to hunt (Cosmic Items), an increase in hero drop rates, and a permanent price cut to all items in the store. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is not the Marvel Heroes you knew at launch.

To put it in perspective for all of us ARPG gamers, Gazillion Entertainment has made more fundamental changes to Marvel Heroes in 6 weeks than Blizzard made to Diablo 3 in over a year. Is Marvel Heroes perfect? Absolutely not, but when the average (non-streamer/non-media) gamer can sit down at their PC, and have a conversation with the lead developer about the state of the game and where it is headed, then you better be frackin sure that the game is headed that way. I don’t room to mention all the awesome they are putting into this game, but I need to add that itemization is not only be worked on, but it is a top priority for this team. That other game still hasn’t fixed itemization, and has stated they will not have it implemented until 2014.

I have not seen a single negative review that actually played through the entire game and gave it a fair shake. Almost every review says something so stupid that it completely outs the fact they didn’t bother playing it. Things like “The inventory is so small and I don’t have a portal to go back to town!”. Really? You didn’t even bother playing long enough to discover the body slider? I mean, I know it’s a new idea on portals…even though Diablo 3 has been using this system since it launched… and it’s available to you from level 1.

So, after all of this gushing over the game let me tell you what I don’t like about it. My biggest complaint has to be optimization. The game does not run well on mid-range systems, and the loading times are terrible even on an SSD

Also, patch times can be long (Yet lately they have been better, and coming in at under 3 hours downtime). In a world where studios like Grinding Gear Games and ArenaNet are cranking out very substantial patches (Big in content, yet tiny in actual byte size) by giving a 10 minute warning, and patching the game in a matter of minutes with nearly no downtime; Well, let’s just say Gazillion could really benefit from their example.

Retcons. My opinion on this is probably where I can be the most toxic. In Marvel Heroes many people have paid cash for their character. Why in the burning hells would you tell your customers that the character they paid for not only can never have their levels reset back to level 1 but that they have to pay cash to respec their build? People will argue that you get one free retcon from doing a quest. It’s one free per character, and is not repeatable. Well that is a great way to introduce the system; it is not a great way to encourage the experimenting with builds.

Have we not had flat out wars over silly specs for lulz? Battle Mage anyone? Charging cash for Retcons while restricting one’s ability to re-roll their character, does nothing but stifle experimentation. All those nerds (like myself, don’t get all offended) who would tell their friends about this awesome, yet completely unlikely build they created, now have nothing to say, because it will cost them $2.50 to respect their character.

Side Note: We do have a famous character called Punchclops, (Cyclops with a melee build). If Retcons were easily attainable (their drop rates suck) would we not have more Punchclops running around? Also, they have mentioned the possibility of re-rolling once you hit level cap, similar to the prestige system in that FPS game. I love it. But I would still prefer an option to flat out re-roll anytime, and unrestricted and on the cheap.

Notable mentions: There is a ton of interaction between the developers and the community members. The upcoming test server will provide us a chance to test The Human Torch, and the new upcoming content. Patches have been aggressive, and striking to the heart of what the community has been requesting. I’ve played a lot of online games, and I have never met a more devoted and attentive development team; they even pretend I don’t come off as semi-bipolar and overly critical of certain (retcons) game mechanics. Which is nice of them.

Seriously, if you are thinking about returning now is the time. They are getting ready to implement a ton of new things that address issues that plagued the game early on! Expand

This game is a lot of fun, with many improvements constantly coming in.

Some people reviewing Marvel Heroes barely put any time into playing the game (I can tell because the information that they're "pulling" out of the game is incorrect and inaccurate). Anyway, I will admit that Marvel Heroes has had several flaws, but with each day the flaws presence fades away. Patches have been coming in almost weekly, and the patches are based on the complaints from the community. The character prices have even been lowered because people were dissatisfied. The game is run by people who actually listen.

I've invested almost 200 hours into this game. I am very satisfied with the progress Gazillion is making, and I am excited for the future of Marvel Heroes.

I've been playing Marvel Heroes since late beta and, as a huge fan of Marvel and MMOs, I love it. The transition from beta to live launch was rushed and certainly led to some hiccups early on, but the team at Gazillion has steadily improved most major aspects of the game since launch. This game has a very bright future ahead of it and I look forward to playing for years to come.

I think that having to rush the game because of greedy publishers has hurt their image but no dev team has ever been so attentive and on the ball as Gaz..this game will go down in history as one of the all time best.. just you watch!

    This game has its Problems.
Bad Performance for Good Pc needed.
    Long Loading Time.
    Not much Late game.
    Bad Stats on Items.
    Yes.

But if you have a good Pc. And you compare D3 to MH you see one big difference.
They are Changing stuff. They are talking in the Forums to the people.

Don't get confused by people saying it has no end game. Its tru, but it will soon have one and Diablo 3 not.

Alright, if I was completely reviewing this for myself, I would give it a 10. Rocket Raccoon is on the roster, and I'm his number 1 fan, so I am willing to deal with any shortcomings while improvements are being made. This game is not perfect, the endgame needs more to do, and there are various QoL improvements that could be made. For an ARPG, though, I think it is very fun to play. If you are a fan of Diablo and/or Diablo II, I was a big fan of the latter, you will have fun with Marvel Heroes. If you are also a fan of Marvel, well, I think that really helps to enjoy the experience even more. In that regard, there are variety of heroes from across the Marvel Universe, as well as some bosses you'll recognize, and an original story written by Brian Michael Bendis (the intro cutscene also deserves a mention, it is just awesome). I would rate the game an 8.5, but that's not an option, so I'll round up (to represent the amazing potential I think we have here). 9/10, Great job, Gazillion Expand

In terms of game play, it's an ARPG with some elements of MMO, it's pretty fun to play as a hero you like, but waiting to get my favorite char with the splinter system they are implementing. I do mostly limbo for end game which is slightly repetitive but it all depends on what you do, it doesn't have to be repetitive. You can switch from green, red, blue, purple flavors, I happen to like purple the best so doing that mostly.

I'd give the game a 7.5 currently, and an additional 0.5 for what's in the works for coming patches (revamp limbo) for the total of 8.0

At the end of the day, though, these few good points don’t make up for the flaws with what should be the most important elements of a game like this - the combat and the loot grind - and an overall lack of polish. Being free to play, you don’t lose out on anything but 15 odd gigabytes of your data cap if you want to give Marvel Heroes a go, but with that said, it’s hard to recommend this game over the other free to play lootfests that are around.
