I haven't played a game this good in a very long time. The landscapes are HUGE, the action is fantastic and the CARS are unbelievable, Can't remember the last time an RPG kept me playing for hours on end.

Constant crashes aside, the game doesn't seem to respect your time by having you backtrack from one side to the other of the map in case of failure. Often times, dying is due to unpredictable physics, and very loose car controls. You will hit this one rock corner that will send you spinning and fail the mission. You will be of course punished, by having to head back on the other side of the map, only to reset the mission multiple times. Also, the game doesn't seem to know how to challenge you when on foot other than overwhelming you with a stupid amount of enemies. Boss fights are repetitive and lack depth. Combat in fact, lacks depth. The best tools and game mechanics are hidden away under a significant amount of grinding and that is a shame, because the road raids can be fun when it allows. Expand

Mad Max is an open world brawler made by the devs behind the Just Cause series. If you've played any of the Batman games you'll be familiar with the combat system as it's very similar, and while it doesn't massively improve upon the formula it does implement it very well. You have your standard light attack, heavy attack, parry and dodge, but on top of that you also have brutal knife finishers which you can perform while carrying knives which are found throughout the game, there are many different kill animations depending on the angle you attack from and they're all very satisfying to pull off and watch. As well as knife finishers you also have Fury kills which are equally visceral and are performed on weak enemies while in Fury mode which is activated once you fill your Fury meter. The combat is definitely the best thing about the game, it's very fluid and just done well, as you upgrade Max you unlock more skills that allow you to pull off even more devastating moves.

As is the trend these days in open world games there are icons all over the map with optional content that add nothing to the game, and even hurts the overall experience I'd argue as tedium does start to set in after awhile, at least it did for me. I would like to see most, if not all of the pointless scrap locations removed if they ever make a sequel, and I would urge the devs to avoid reusing the territory system which is extremely boring, you are basically doing the exact same checklist of objectives over and over just in different zones, it got boring about half way through. Now in stark contrast the side quests and especially the main story are both fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed them, had the game had more content like that instead of the filler fluff it would have gone from being merely good to great. Another area where the devs really shot themselves in the foot was the Top Dogs who acted as bosses throughout the game, after you kill the first one you're thinking “wow, that was cool” but later you come to realize every Top Dog is exactly the same, just with a different name and a palette swap. If Avalanche make a sequel I would like to see unique bosses instead of the same one recycled 20 times.

Other than the pointless fluff content, the biggest issue with the game is the car handling, it's really, really bad. I can't stress enough just how much the car handling hurt my overall experience. Even a fully upgraded Magnum Opus (your car) will spin out of control for seemingly no reason, and God forbid you clip a bucket or something equally insignificant while moving at speed, this will send you into an uncontrollable tailspin. And that's the Magnum Opus, other vehicles you're forced to drive for quests and races handle much worse.

Now the game does do a lot right as well, the cut-scenes are fantastic, helped massively by some top quality voice work. The game also looks stunning, and it runs almost perfectly on PC, I say almost because there is an issue where you will micro freeze for a split second infrequently, I have confirmed this with at least 20 other people who all have the same problem. Other than that blip the game runs at 60fps on max settings without issue, and you don't need a GTX 980 to pull it off, it's extremely well optimised for a wide range of configurations.

In closing I will say I enjoyed the game and I definitely recommend it, maybe not at full price but if it's ever on sale I would snap it up for sure. Just don't get sucked into the fluff content as it will fatigue you by the time you get to the end of the game.

Despite the worst Australian accents in gaming and the baffling use of American English, this game does good justice to the iconic Australian films. Way more fun than critics would have you believe and certainly a lot of bang for your buck.

The gameplay is where this game shines, you have a car with a massive list of parts that you can upgrade you have three main aspects to it: Speed, handling and strength. You can either have a car that is good at all of them or a car that is great at two and weak at the other. the customization is also complex and fun, it's not just you trying to max out every category, you also have to keep in mind the down side to every upgrade.

Upgrading Max himself is also just as fun. Learning new combat moves never felt like I'm wasting scrap (the currency in the game). Each move felt unique and useful from reversals to wall slamming to limb breaking. The game is also VERY violent and gory which makes it even better for me. You'll face different types of enemies that will require you to use most of you moves along the game.

The open worlds of this game is one of the best I've ever seen in any video game. All the roads connect to each other and it's extremely nonrestrictive which is a huge plus. Each area has a big balloon where you can spot landmarks and "Threats" that you need to lower in order to unlock new upgrades for you and your car

The graphics in this are superb, especially when it comes to lights, shadows, tire and footstep trails. The game looks pretty colorful and well done. Can't ask for much more than this

The sound isn't up to the game's standard. I often found myself not being able to precisely pinpoint where the sound is coming from, but overall it's serviceable.

For the most part this game is bug free, though I did find myself getting stuck on minute objects but there isn't a persistent bug worth mentioning.

Overall this game is one of the best games I have played this year and it baffles me that it's getting these low scores. I definitely recommend you purchase this game at full price, you won't be disappointed.

As others have already mentioned, this is one of those grindy, repetitive open world games. This is basically just a jack of all trades, master of none type of game. They just put together gameplay from GTA, Assassin's Creed, Batman, and Farcry, but it doesn't do anything necessarily extraordinary. I would say the only thing I commend them on is the car battles.

Don't even get me started on the poor optimization of the PC port. Seems like they only tested the game on a few different hardware configurations. I have a clean install of Windows 10, all drivers upated and latest BIOS firmware, but the game crashes randomly. I've installed 4 different versions of the Nvidia drivers and even lowered my settings to normal, but the crashes still occur. I know my video card (GTX570) can handle this on high settings because it runs smoothly on high up to the time it crashes. I can run MGS V on high with no problem. I think I've just come to the conclusion that WB Games doesn't have a good QA team for their PC ports. I mean look at the debacle with Arkham Knight. They had to take the game off the Steam store and push it back due to the technical problems.

(Update 9/29/15) - The latest patch has resolved the random crashing I was experiencing so I've bumped my score up from a 6 to a 7.

I've read lots of sparkling reviews praising the graphics, but the visuals are very basic; it's mostly desert and badly textured metals etc, (think Borderlands without the cartoon filter).
You'll spend a vast majority of your time climbing ladders, collecting scrap and entering/exiting your car; but the range of detection in the games code for these tasks is so terrible, you'll spend the vast majority of your time cursing the game developers, rather than playing the game.
On top of this you have to constantly drive about with a crow-barred in character named 'chum bucket', who's superfluous to the Mad Max cannon, and was only placed there for the younger audience. I assume the developers or publishing house, feel that their target audience need some form of constant companionship and guidance in modern games, because, 'silence and thinking for oneself is a negative thing'. There are many other faults with this pc title, but I won't mention them, I've wasted enough time writing this.
I just didn't want people giving their money to a bad title and therefore encouraging sloppy practice in the pc game industry. (...although at this point, I really feel like I'm pissing in the wind).

In addition, many upgrades to the car and Max are gated behind main story progress so one can't really prepare itself by doing side-quests or collecting stuff upfront. The cars handled relatively well with keyboard and mouse, except in races were I found it difficult to make small adjustments and ended up facing backwards too many times. In conclusion, this is a good game and was worth its cost. Expand

The short version is that the story starts off promising and then ends in a cloud of stupidity. There's plenty of cut-scene incompetence, and a story that in addition to not being there, is propped up only by the time spent roaming around - otherwise, it'd be a very short game indeed. It gets repetitive quickly and there's no replay value.

    Not worth 60 bucks.

The narrative and story are both well paced and fitting to the characters, and are both refreshingly simple in design. The dialogue is only sometimes spoiled by the awful voice acting of the main character - but others are so well voiced and acted, that they could be recordings from unmade movies.

The game play itself is largely what you make it. It does have some annoying DA: Inquisition-type task orientated side-quests, but then compliments that with a freely open world fun, where you can do what you want. Sure, the options are limited, but what do you expect in a post-apocalyptic wasteland? The constant focus on collecting scrap grates a little, but no more than in a Borderlands-find-the-cash-type way.

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing Mad Max, and strangely, look forward to parting with my cash on future DLCs and sequels. It is a real pleasure to play, and that is what recent games of this caliber have been missing.

Is it a bad game? Absolutely not. On the contrary, Ubisoft's open-world template is perfect for churning out market-friendly games that tick all the boxes of "What People Want." Or, perhaps, "What You Want."...And honestly, Mad Max's formula is still to some extent "What I Want." Just not as much as a few years ago.

The exceptional depiction of the Wasteland, the chaotic nature of the post-apocalyptic society, the excellent technical qualities and thrilling vehicle fights are held back by the mundane melee combat mechanics, the loose story, the repetitive nature of secondary objectives and the overall low-level challenge.
