A lot of fun, certainly long enough. Fighting and driving are really great, makes you want to keep playing and can't wait to get back on. Cons There are a few problems with the controls. Cons

There are a few problems with the controls. There are a couple buttons that do too many things and the game doesn't use nearly enough buttons or combinations to do more of the actions. IE, the refill tank and ignite, climb is the same as drop item is the same as pick up is the same as talk is the same as interact, combat is basically 2 buttons with a 3rd thrown in every now and then, all of the finishing moves are the same button. The main quests are very vague and stop you from progressing until you figure out they are trying to tell you something.

The story is a huge disappointment and honestly ruined the game for me. Had Max made some sense i would have rated this game much higher.

    Pros:
    - You can punch people in the face. Like a lot!
    - Landscapes are pretty.
    - The dog is nice.

    Cons:
    - Universe is extremely inconsistent.
    - Punching people in the face gets boring, as soon as you understand, that you actually fight UI icons and not the bandits.
    - Voice acting is as cheesy as it gets, for main character especially.
    - Pretty landscapes become rather boring pretty quick.
    - Car handling is a mess.

Universe of Mad Max greets player with a mixed bag of somewhat realistic graphics and extremely unrealistic everything else.

There are two types of main resources of the game: fuel and scrap metal, and they are wasted all the time on nothing. If you kill an enemy driver, the most obvious way of getting resources, is to take the car with all its fuel back home and disassemble it. But the game only let you to ram it until it explodes leaving just a few scraps, barely enough to add a bumper to your car.

That being said, any amount of damage to your car is fixed in matter of seconds, by tightening one single nut under the hood, and require no resources at all.

When you enter bandit’s camp, you see literally tons of scrap metal everywhere, including lots of cars and car parts. But you can collect only that one highlighted piece, just because.

The battle has same issues. You have a huge knife, but you cannot use it in combat. You fight 10 people at the time, but only one of them is engaging to fight you, while others wait in line. They not dumb monsters and you are not batman, so this is ridiculous.

There is also a magical store, that can convert couple of tons of scrap metal to one pretty shirt in the middle of sand desert. I guess that would be ok for a sci-fi game, but for an apocalyptic game, where people collect water from wind using rugs, this is way out of place.

I suppose, I could’ve enjoy that game if bandins would look more like crazy zombies or something, and characters would not try to sound so dramatic and serious.

This is my first impression based on 3 hours of gameplay

I ranked this game 10 because I think this title deserves more credit. It has a good open world atmosphere. You can see a devastating sand storm coming your way and then you have to run for your life and take shelter. It has a very nice graphics, fair story, nice combat system, and very fun car combat.

It was a good choice. I do tend to get bored in open world games sometimes but the combat and story of Mad Max kept me entertained. There were a few quirks along the way but nothing gamebreaking. The graphics were solid, the game was stable, the combat was great and the story fit the lore.

The gameplay was a mesh of the Batman games from Rocksteady and Sleeping Dogs. It mixed the timing based combat of the Batman games with the brutality from Sleeping Dogs. It felt very at home with the Mad Max series as it was very low tech but brutal. You could use shivs, various finishers such as breaking bones and necks, melee weapons and go into fury mode which aside from extra damage has it’s own selection of finishers. I wished you had more control over which finisher was used as sometimes they would repeat a lot but that’s a minor gripe. The car combat was pretty decently done but felt clunky at times. There were a good variety of weapons to use from the car but aiming them just felt off sometimes. I could be right next to an enemy but not have the option to shoot for their tires but move a little away or back and suddenly I could even though I should have had a clear shot before. The car damage was a mixed bag as well. I could run head on into a rock and half my car’s health could be gone or get t-boned by an enemy and same thing but I could then go and boost off a cliff, flip over a half dozen times and land without a scratch or dent to my car’s health. One more thing is that the lack of a jump ability was really poorly thought out. I literally couldn’t get to some loot because the game wouldn’t allow me to walk on a few surfaces to get to it. Had I been able to jump there would be no issue. I wish the map would tell me which areas were locked because sometimes I travelled all the way to a loot location only to be told this area was locked to a story quest which means I wasted my time going there.

The graphics were overall above average but not stunning. I can’t point to one thing and say it was bad but I also can’t point to one detail that really stunned me. You know the feeling of seeing water or foilage in Crysis the first time or seeing the world of Oblivion after exiting the dungeon after the intro or the fire damage to the landscape in Far Cry 2, etc. I could go on but basically the graphics were good and better than some but nothing stood out about them. It may be tough to make a desert wasteland look gorgeous but either way they didn’t. One thing I will say though is the storms were very well done. Lightning strikes going off everywhere, debris blowing everywhere, made for a sight and was tense.

As I mentioned earlier the game was stable for me on Linux. On Windows I would get a crash every 10 minutes or so due to a “directX error”. On Linux I had one single solitary crash and that was it. On Linux it had a Vulkan beta as wel as the standard OpenGL version. The Vulkan version offered me more stable framerates, less valleys and peaks than OpenGL. Both were good though as I averaged over 80 FPS with the game maxed out. That being said when I was around two specific areas, Deep Friah’s stronghold and Gastown, I would get random drops to 20-30 FPS even with nothing going on at all. No combat, car chases, just me walking around. I am not sure of the cause but it happened on both OpenGL and Vulkan. The game was only using 26% of my CPU and between 3-3.5GB of RAM so those weren’t the cause of my slowdowns. As for graphics options there were plenty. There were toggles for Vsync and motion blur, 8 different levels for AF, 1 level for SSAO and AA as well as 13 other options all with various levels. There was no way to turn depth of field off though, I could only lower it. While there was no option in the menu for 144Hz the game did allow me to go up to 144hz with Vsync. I beat the story in 52 hours and completed 78% of the game overall. I played on version 1.1 of the game. The game lacked manual saves but it did save after every event whether it was collecting loot, doing an upgrade or completing a mission so it wasn’t a big deal.

I enjoyed my time with Mad Max. It had it’s quirks and issues but overall the story was good and the combat was good so those are two big wins right there. I would easily recommend it to those who enjoy open world games or the timing based combat of the Batman games. There are better games out there but there are far worse as well. I paid $6 CAD for it but would easily say it is worth $30 CAD.

    My score: 7.5/10

The sound of running engine cause a lot of joy and make the heart beat faster; the driving physics is also on the good side, as well as random sand storms and tornadoes which can really catch us off guard and hurt badly. The world has been constructed in an exquisite way- all these light reflections, weather changes, driving physics, fight mode, enemies and the incredible undergrounds. We can also find stuff like postcards and info from the past. I’ll be honest- it was really nice to read these old notes and listen to short, but to the point comments from Max.

Additionally we have character development through doing all kinds of quests and upgrading our vehicles. To me it’s perfect! Below you can find evaluation of individual game elements and pros and cons.

Easily one of the best open worlds I've experienced, just the right amount of filler, solid if basic story, superb graphics (those sky boxes) and excellent sound. If you are the type of player that hammers through a game's storyline then there will be much that you will miss in this game. It will not be for everyone and the gameplay loop has a few issues in terms of pacing and repetitiveness but overall there is a lot of fun to be had. The main issue for me in terms of pacing was that I tend to play games like this a certain way...build up, build up, build up focusing on developing character skills and the means of developing a solid steady income. The problem (if it is one) is that in this game I was at maximum skill level and abilities before leaving the first part of the game. There were lots of vehicles and parts to still unlock but combat-wise, by ignoring the story and building up and completing tons and tons of side missions, salvage locations, encounters and liberating camps and territories, Max was as strong as he was going to get way before reaching the more challenging stuff in the second part.

The open world itself is often spectacular. The design of the camps and many, many of the scavenger locations dotted around the map are incredibly varied although the gameplay involved in taking them over or looting them is less so. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if the game were smaller in scale but there are so many of these locations that some will undoubtedly find them boring at some point.

Driving and car combat is decent. Melee combat can be perhaps slightly more nuanced than mashing counter and attack...although that will get you through the majority of encounters. Yet as Max gains skills and abilities there is a bit more to the combat and fights can result in some pretty satisfying beat downs. However, boss fights are pretty much all the same...get some distance, wait for boss to charge, dodge roll, attack, hit with whatever that boss is weak against, dodge...runaway again and repeat. Every boss can be beaten this way and the only variety later in the game is that some bosses call in a few handfuls of minions to try spice up proceedings a little.

People complain about the story, and I have to wonder if they have seen a Mad Max film because none of them are particularly noteworthy for their narrative. The game starts slow story wise, but by the end you get the Max you are expecting. Having said all that, I enjoyed it quite a bit and definitely got my money's worth out of it. If it had been slightly smaller in scope and slightly more varied and had one or two other minor niggles polished out I might have even gone a bit more than an 8...as it is it's pretty solid at what it does and worth a look if you pick it up on offer.

    - Excellent driving and the wide variety car pimping upgrades worthy of the post-apocalypse (though it borders the illogical; after all, you can't change the entire body of the car mid-battle), and sick as hell car designs for both Max's and the enemies' that will make Mel Gibson glee in joy
    - Avalanche's trademark heavenly fire and explosion effects from their Just Cause series, coupled with authentic sound effects, that will make surely arouse Michael Bay, which is easily the most amazing sight in the game, and thankfully something you'll see all the time
    - The oh so glorious car combat, especially the convoy take-down side activities, which brings in the rush and awesomeness of Fury Road right in your face
    - The sick and satisfying melee combat in the vein of the Arkham games coupled with a few awesome moves like that one where you pierce that poor war boy with a thunderstick and let him explode in a glorious splatter, or that finisher where Max does the Black Widow neck twist, though not as complex and requiring of much timing and precision or strategy even than
    - Excellent character design, voice work and animation, and the fact that Max has unique dialogue for certain locations, except for those pathetic characters you meet in wasteland encounters who mumble an entirely different language
    - The pretty varied design (and the surprising complexity for some) of the loot locations, camps and stronghold which makes scouring each one of them less of a total grind, some of the most complex and intriguing of which are found in the farthest corners of the map
    - The history relic collectibles, some of which bring a true sense of loss and realization on my part that we might just be the one picking those same pictures one day
    - The deadly, excellently made and scary as fudge sandstorms that's not quite chaotic as that from 'Fury Road' but still crazy as fudge, that can literally send Max and his weak cars spiralling out of control
    - Dinky-di's pretty silly ability to bark and scare the crap out of landmines, so much so that they emerge from their deep sandy enclosures for Max to diffuse them
    - The awesome lens flare and aberration effects
    - When you get it, that absolutely epic moment when a sandstorm roars over as you fight the living crap out of warboys flipping their butts as you destroy those transfer tanks for the tenth time

    CONS:
    - The pretty weak and uninteresting story of Max fighting hoards of post-apocalyptic crazies just to pimp the hell out of his ride and finding peace in a world where the last thing you'll find is the p-word, coupled with generally uninteresting side characters that's basically there to give you fetch quests (which, come to think of it, is basically better than 'Fury Road' which isn't even really focused on Max himself but on Furiosa escaping with The Wives on the War Rig - incidentally on the game itself - then coming back to the Citadel)
    - The general open-world grind of icon extermination and collectathon, and the pretty strong sense of repetitiveness (including combat), which can get really tiring after hours of play (though still gets me excited to get back to after some rest)
    - The less than responsive counter system as compared to that of the Arkham or Middle-earth's, making you most likely to fail in getting that sweet 30+ combo counter and annoy you to the end of the Universe
    - The incredibly annoying death runs, featuring the archangel collectible cars that handle like crap and easily get destroyed with the slightest touch of the other cars' bumpers
    - The generally mediocre and uninteresting main and side mission design, generally comprising of driving for minutes on end, blowing up enemy cars along the way, reaching the objective point, kicking the crap out of everybody, maybe finding all collectibles in the area, and repeat
    - Max's sheer inability to jump even waist-freaking-high obstacles like he's carrying 500 pounds of fat within him when he can easily reach a yellow bar, which is unbelievably annoying
    - The utter uselessness of archangel car varieties, when you could just spend all your time upgrading your main magnum opus to an all around monster
    - Few bug annoyances, including enemies suddenly disappearing out into thin air, game elements not appearing properly, and the (quite frequent) crashing

So, my feelings on this game are so mixed. I want to give it a 10, but I also want to give it an 8. So I gave it a 9. It's best summarized this way: it's just SO MUCH FUN usually. Like Fallout, the Environment is the true star (at least so far, I'm 40 hours in) and the gameplay is just ok, but feels super fun. It just IS Mad Max.

Like Fallout, the Environment is the true star (at least so far, I'm 40 hours in) and the gameplay is just ok, but feels super fun. It just IS Mad Max.

    Good:

Accomplishments: I love the screens when you dismantle enemy camps and do other objectives; I LOVE when a designer adds that extra zing to acknowledge what you have done.

Atmosphere 10. Bonus: NAILS Mad Max.

Fighting: 8. Fights are visceral and more nuanced that critics give it, but not that hard usually and a bit simpler than batman. Car battles are very exciting, again directly out of the movie.

Fun Factor: Generally 10. It plays better than it is really is. If that makes sense. The game is really a solid 7 or 8 but "feels" like a 10 a lot of the time.

Graphics: 10. I dk what engine this is, but it's gorgeous photorealistic eye candy on par with Frostbite and Lithtech.

Level Design: 8. Each place feels very different even though there are obvious similarities. I never felt like they just carbon copied each location. Some of them really stunned me even after hours and hours of play. If after you dispatch the baddies you just love taking in the sights from a rusty walkway towering above the mountains overlooking a forlorn desert at nightfall, or the eerie survival horror of going down a ladder into a dark dungeon, it's good stuff. Never gets boring. Except for one criticism: it's great there are certain things that need to be crowbarred or stomped or exploded open, but there's rarely any mystery or strategy to it.

Speech: Again, beautiful finished touches. Chumbucket never seems to run out of new things to say. Don't get me wrong. He repeats himself a lot. But just when I thought I heard it all, he says something new. Samething with the strongholds and Griffa. Haven't run out of new compliments or insults or insights. Amazing. I LOVE the developers put that level of care into it.

    ***

    Ok now the bad:

Car: Some people claim the upgraded magnum opus is amazing. I've got 40 hours into the game and even the crappiest buggy can still outrun me no problem with fairly upgraded v6 stuff, when I'm driving perfectly on asphalt. Something's off here, but maybe I just need to figure it out.

Confusing mechanics: It took me awhile to get certain concepts like how to listen to the dog barking (it makes diff noises) or watch for clues in the environment that something's there. Same thing with using the harpoon; I could highlight enemy tires but then not doing anything b/c the harpoon wasn't good enough but no warning.

Constant Enemies: I don't understand how some people said there are no enemies to fight. Every 2 seconds, I'm just trying to explore or take care of an objective, I get overrun but highly armored annoying baddies. Don't get me wrong. Sometimes the random encounters are fun, but not every 2 minutes. By mid game it's just super annoying IMHO.

Gameplay: Ok, critics bash the game for its rinse repeat nature. I liked it. Because relics tell the story of the Fall and other events, it made scavenging worthwhile. I mean, it's basically Fallout in MM. That said, there are few things that could use improvement: (1) a penalty for dying? other than pride? (2) once you build strongholds, scrap and ammo accumulates to the point there's no point scavenging anything except for relics; the fact that strongholds give you bonuses is awesome but also ultimately detracts from the horror survival aspect (3) more realism (see below) (4) you can use fast travel to escape certain death; they might want to restrict it (yeah yeah I know, I can always restrict it myself, still...) (5) combat is very good, but not quite all the way there yet.

Map: UGH! The water markers constantly disappear off it unless you're near. I can't tell you how annoying this is. You need water as a med kit and they hide it from you. Even after you discover it. But not always. It's random.

OCD: Critics nailed it that sometimes trying to loot each location is an OCD nightmare. Most times its really fun to explore every nook and cranny but sometimes I HAD to go to the internet to find it.

Realism: Yeah um right. Ok, I get it. You're Mad Max, but you can drive off a cliff and suffer no damage. You can also get run over a car a few times. Head on. I mean, if they animated you dodging aside at the last minute or something maybe.

Storms: The big storm was a great idea that in truth is a terrible idea. You get like 10 seconds warning, and then it's often impossible to find cover in time. Your car is safe but it's not. You can't heal in your car. And then enemies, immune to the storm themselves, often find and attack you in the middle of it. (silver lining) I found you can fast travel at will and avoid it.

I haven’t had any positive reviews as such I selected this game to stay on the good side.

Not sure why but this game, when it came out, it was reviewed by some quite unfavourably, The same people who gave 10/10 to some other trash games. I guess this is 21 century marketing. In essence you have a solid single player game with a lot of hours of gameplay (40+ on my account). Rarely I

In essence you have a solid single player game with a lot of hours of gameplay (40+ on my account). Rarely I come back to old titles, but for this one I made an exception.

Pros: solid game, with good customization, some hand to hand fighting and enjoyable gameplay. As a bonus, good graphic that is very well optimised.

    Cons: no multiplayer.

This game is really funny. Quite repetitive, but enoyable. Open world is big, but not dispersive. Mad Max has a good story but not the gameplay.

Like: - Graphics is really detailed. - Physics simulation is good. - Story is better than Mad Max (the movie). Dislike: - Combat system is poor. - The character's abilities are poor. He cannot even climb on a low stair which is just high as his stomach. - Less weapon to use. - Why do I have to meet a NPC to upgrade my Stats. And why

    - Car upgrading also bad as the Chars Stats Upgrading.
No reason for me to replay the game.

Mad Max is all about insane characters, furious car chases and a chaotic post-apocalyptic world that all promise something memorable. Clearly it failed to deliver.

Not only does this game have very good graphics, the combat (both on foot and in cars) is very fun and satisfying. Upgrading the Magnum Opus is also very rewarding. There are also lots of missions and side quests that keep you playing all day. Not to mention this game goes on sale a lot, so you can pick it up cheap. Would recommend.

Is it a bad game? Absolutely not. On the contrary, Ubisoft's open-world template is perfect for churning out market-friendly games that tick all the boxes of "What People Want." Or, perhaps, "What You Want."...And honestly, Mad Max's formula is still to some extent "What I Want." Just not as much as a few years ago.

Mad Max is this year’s equivalent of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – a really decent open world game that will not disappoint the fans of the franchise and will win over some undecided gamers, but will not be inducted into the industry’s hall of fame alongside Skyrim, GTA, Black Flag or The Witcher 3. Mad Max is a missed opportunity. The exceptional depiction of the Wasteland, the chaotic nature of the post-apocalyptic society, the excellent technical qualities and thrilling vehicle fights are held back by the mundane melee combat mechanics, the loose story, the repetitive nature of secondary objectives and the overall low-level challenge.
