Don't just read the 10 below, that's either a massive fanboy, or a developer giving you the hard sell, (HotRise).

Game is still in alpha, Combat needs quite a bit of work. Overall the game feels very basic as of now. IMO I'd wait if you want the full experience.

I'll adjust or write up a new review once the game is released, but as of now, no way is this game a 10.

    Beware.
The developers are seeming quite shady. Deleting ANY forum thread on steam that remotely mentions their overpriced early release game, Or, The fact that they delete any thread that draws attention to a negative point about the game should be a red flag.

Notice the 10/10 review from HotRise here on metacritic?

Go check out the life is feudal website and notice how similar their 'selling points' are.
HotRise's review has no ACTUAL cons. This is a typical market tactic. Look constructive and modest, yet, have no ACTUAL downside.

The developers aren't well known. And while this DOES NOT mean they shouldn't be trusted, it DOES mean to be careful.
    How do we do this?
By monitoring their "First impression practises"

    What are they?
-Overpriced $40 early-release (very unfinished) game. (When compared to Rust and DayZ both having big names behind them, lots of trust, and a less expensive early release product)

-Lack of professionalism Re: not being able to take consumer criticism, and instead deleting any sign of it. (This is propaganda)

-The Devs aren't even confident that their game will actually be successful.
"WHEN we will get to some playable MMO alpha. So far MMO tests are ceased and if we won't succeed with LiF:YO - we might will have troubles." -Bobik, Life is Feudal Developer, Steam forum.

-The developers don't seem to have a decent grasp on marketing and sales.
    And think about this.
It is a scary thought that a bunch of people who may or may not be able to create a game will pull out random figures of "we need $200,000 for making the game" without being able to tell you where the money will be spent and why.

A bunch of people who don't understand market trends and values and will charge twice what other more well-established companies charge for an Early Release game without understanding that as an upstart company, where there has been no established trust, that they need to charge less to sell more.

And this will potentially create more revenue, but, DEFINITELY generate a larger "copies sold" statistic. Which in of itself, creates more trusted statistics for further backing/sponsorship/sales.

This game may be great. But right now, the developers seem to be a bunch of guys who haven't much idea about business.
Maybe they can design a game. But it takes more than that to be successful.

Too scared to pay $40 and watch the company shut-down so I could just make a few people rich. As has happened with 'companies' in the past.
When and if the "company" starts acting more professional and less shady/disrespectful to their consumer-base, I will re-do my review.

Until then, I will have a close eye on them. And also warn others to not throw $40 down the tube to a company who's LEAD DESIGNER has doubts about the probability of success.

Regardless however, for the audience this is aimed at, it is ridiculously fun already, and accomplishes what DayZ has always failed as a concept: Make people not kill each other at first sight just because they can.

Any open world survival game quickly turned into a Deathmatch with crafting features. Here however, on any server people are actively working together, being helpful, building communities and villages. This is remarkable and an achievement in itself.

Now to my previous posters building their whole criticism 2 days after initial pre-alpha release (just repeat that again in your mind before you continue):

"WHEN we will get to some playable MMO alpha. So far MMO tests are ceased and if we won't succeed with LiF:YO - we might will have troubles." -Bobik, Life is Feudal Developer, Steam forum.

If one tries really hard, one can read that this is saying they have their doubts about their ability to develop the game. If one considers how bad Bobik is at speaking English (watch any interview/youtube review with him and you´ll see), you may or may not get the epithany that this is related to the release of LIF:YO. Whether or not they can continue to develop the MMO (10k instead of 64 players, full claim/guild features etc.) depends vastly on the COMMERCIAL success of LIF:YO. So this is not the lead dev doubting his teams ability, this is repeating the statement made in the Indygogo campaign: We need cash to make this a big game.

Now that I think is a reasonable statement to make, and I trust that they will get the funds they need, and the game will turn out great.

The idea for the game sounds great on paper as always. But as we have seen so many times all those crowd funded independent studios lack the skill to create the game they talk about.

I doubt that there will be enough support and or content to keep early access purchasers interested in the long run IF the game is released as intended. The idea of forming towns with likeminded fellows and creating your on fiefdom is interesting but likely ultimately futile (feudal…). As I cannot foresee two groups of gamers building two towns for hours on end on the server then waging war on one another and destroying all that they have created. I wish the devs best of luck as it sounds like a truly awesome game. But we have seen games fall short that only aim at nailing one aspect of the many they are trying to achieve (mount and blade, chivalry etc). I will look on from afar and will not back until at the very least the devs are confident that they can actually form their own ideas. If DayZ is falling short and having a lot of teething issues with the backing and user support they have I can only imagine what is in store for these guys. Expand

This game has a great concept around, but it still very raw and flawed,i dont give a 10 and i dont give a 0,so far a 5 is good enough,it still very very early access and i believe it will take some time even before the Beta version be released, this game has been under development for 3 years and i understand,it's a very complex game but a very promising one.

Its possible that some things in this review are outdated on future patches, this is a 22/09/2014 review on Alpha stage

    The pros

    - I'd give a 10/10 for the concept of the game, very well thought but implement the game mechanics to work is a great challenge
    - Even in alpha stage you can do a lot in the game
    - It's fun to help build the game suggesting your ideas, you can help shape the game

    The cons

    - It is overpriced, there is no denying it,we can all either believe in the devs and believe in the game or be careful and wait, maybe the prices will be lower
    - Servers instability, crashes all the time, the devs said they are going to fix this ASAP
    - Needs tweaking in a lot of things, for example,to build somethings in a midtier skill you will be needing a lot of high tier itens, thats very unbalanced
    - Work better on prospecting ores
    - Apple trees are so OP that will you never need an actual farm, just keep farming the trees...i think this need to be worked
    - Animals are to scarce,i mean, animals like rabbits and squires could be abundand
    - Urgente work on combat, the most flawed part of the game
    - And a lot more of working on other aspects

It's not that the game is terrible, remember,it's alpha,we need to tell the devs what is wrong or what can be worked, the game is very promising and i believe in the devs,it's not a game to be rushed, even if it take another 3 years and deliver what it is promising it will be worth.

This game ruined my life for two weeks. Very addictive and wonderful gameplay, the devs are constantly working and adding new features. Recently they added seasons and herb gardens. Most the negative reviews are from people two years ago when it was in alpha. They game is released now and those reviews should be totally ignored.

when you get a good group of people, the gameplay is limitless.

I never thought the game of my dreams would ever be made. Life is Feudal is that game. While it's still a work in progress, the game already offers hundreds of hours of gameplay and fun. Warning: this game is "hardcore" (with exceptions- keep reading).

    Synopsis of gameplay:
It's an open medieval sandbox world that's ready to be transformed by you and your fellow knights (FYI, to be successful, you'll typically need to play this game with friends or with other players that you meet in game). You start in the wilderness, with hardly any clothes, and gather edible food to stay alive, along with plant fiber and sticks to create primitive tools. With these tools, you slowly become self-sufficient: building a house for yourself, farmland, crafting equipement, and digging a mine. Soon, you have a little village going! Maybe even build a palisade wall around it to help keep out hostile players! ;)

    Multiplayer:
It's very important that you play this game with other people because LIF revolves around having to use teamwork to succeed. One cannot learn all the skills, yet each skill supplments the other. So if you hope to eventually make a small village, don't expect to do it with just your hermit-self. You need a specialized blacksmith, farmer, miner, builder, and alchemist to get everything done! And hopefully multiples of each ;) IMPORTANT: Use in-game global chat to FIND other players, or search the LIF website forums for groups in need of more members! (don't just walk around aimlessly in-game).

^There IS an exception: Private servers can be personalized by the admin to allow players larger skill caps (to obtain most available skills) as well as skill multipliers, which make work/leveling faster, potentially allowing you to play solo, or for shorter periods of time. But this is not the original "vanilla" version of the game.

    Pros:
-I've never had so much fun playing a game before. Give it adaquete time before you judge it.
-Medieval realism, sandbox, open world, terraforming, no-target combat, full-loot PvP. Pinch me I'm dreaming.
-Player-built and player-run world. No NPCs.

    Cons (potential):
-Very difficult learning curve. It's hard to familearize yourself with game mechanics.
-The game is very hardcore (UNLESS you are playing on a severely customized server). If you're a Call of Duty fan, leave before it's too late!
-You're going to need to put A LOT of time into this game if you want to build a completed settlement with your mates. The journey, while slow, is a fun one though. If you don't have the time, try waiting for the MMO version (where settlements will likely demand a smaller share of responsibility from you).
-Being in Alpha, some elements are naturally not working as well as they should be (ie. smoothness of combat, wild animals, occassional crashing). BUT the deveopment team is extremely active, and updates are always rolling out. This game is even exponentially better than it was a week ago (I was a pre-alpha tester for months outside steam).
-This 64 player version (MMO info is below) does not prioritize combat. There is no clear mechanic that allows for competing groups of players to wage war against each other in order to destroy each other's settlements. (You can still fight for the sake of fighting though and kill each other). But if you are looking for soley a combat/fighting game, do not get this. It's design leans towards crafting and building the world around you.

    Long term goal:
This is the 64 player version of a larger MMO that they are trying to generate funding for. The MMO's success rides on the success of this smaller game. Both have the same gameplay mechanics, so development of one equally benefits the other. (FYI: Sieging/large-scale combat will be more prevalent in the MMO).
