This is coming from someone who, litterally, has beat the game inside and out, then played it more, and still plays it to this day. I've played co-op, campaign, even the newly released survivor modes. I have every achievement possible, done all there is to do. But... only four campaigns? I was hoping for more campaigns, not a single level you can't escape with a light house. Sure, the developer kit will probably be released soon and people can make their own maps... but if there aren't some more official maps released as well Im going to be let down again. There's only so much we as a community can do, honestly. What makes a big part of the game fun is the survivors, their quirks, the dialogue they say to one another. From Francis's frequent reminders of everything he hates to Bills constant complaint about walking up and down stairs and so on, there is absolutely nothing new we as a community can do to make that ourselves. There's just so much more Valve could have added to the game by now and they haven't. I know plenty of my friends I've played with stop to "take a break" from the game because they feel the same, whether they actively say it or not. For how much it cost, there should have been more content. Sure, the replayability is awesome. I've spent over a hundred hours, probably closer to two, playing about 4or 5 hours worth of content. So think how much better the game would be with another 4 or 5 hours of content. That's right... I want at least another 4 campaigns... and no, I don't want a left for dead 2, I want more for this one. I've already heard about it... really what's stopping that from being more new content? New characters to play as, new levels to choose from? I think Valve would be doing everyone like me a diservice if they did anything less, especially considering games like half life and the super fantastic orange box. Seriously, look at all your fans cheering you on here, giving you the benefit of the doubt. Don't let us down. I'm not even saying give us our money's worth... live up to your already stellar reputation... give us what you already know your loyal community deserves. Once again, prove you can go above and beyond all our expectations, it's what put you where you are now after all. Until then, I don't think I can give the game anything better than an 8. Expand

The games pros are obvious, so i stop here but here come the cons: -some servers are badly lagging and even if you are in the same country sometimes you get completely differnet pings with your friends -sometimes the servers just crash when they are loading the next level -the graphics are ok, but nothing special. I think the source engine is just too old now, they should have licenced something like Cry oder Unreal Engine. -Easy Normal and hard are just TOO easy and the expert mode makes a big jump to nearly impossible, here valve should do something sorry for my bad english, i hop you understand what i would like to say. The co-op aspect of it is fun and is exciting when playing whichever campaign for the first time, but once you know what the map is like, it's not as exciting. Graphics are real nice, HL2:Ep2 style. The game however is not worth $50 compared to other PC games you can buy off steam which have a higher replayability. I think it should be $30 MAX. Expand

There's nothing to prevent you from ending up in some lame-brain's custom map. The interface can't seem to figure out if the server is full, back at lobby after a game, on someone's laptop or anything, and so gives you super-laggy servers or disconnects after connecting you. Valve have done a superb job of making sure players stick together as a team (as you won't survive long if you go it alone) without it feeling forced. You really do feel that the odds are stacked against you throughout the campaigns but in a good way. The only serious criticisms I have are to do with one of the best features of the game, the AI Director. The Director is a fantastic Idea that does keep the player on their toes as you never know when you'll be rushed by a horde of infected, however it could do with a greater variety of spawn points for the special enemies as I found after a few play throughs I knew where the witches were likely to be placed or when a tank was probably going to attack. That said when the director works it works very well indeed. Just like in a horror film some of the most tense parts of left 4 dead are where nothing is really happening, for instance your team are just coming to a room which is where you had one of your toughest fights last time so you're expecting the horde or a tank just round the corner, everyone heals up, reloads, gets psyched. You burst in and....... nothing, where the hell are they? A simple trick like the changing spawnpoints of enemies can add a surprising amount to the lifespan of a game. L4d2 sounds like it's improving on this with the Director able to change the actual layout of the maps to a certain extent which, combined with more types of special infected will probably fix the few issues I have with it. Sorry my comments rambled for so long, just passing time waiting for the game to download from steam. Expand

It is a fast-paced, emotionally charged game that will keep you jumping. You WILL need people that you play well with to really enjoy this game though. Without it and you will receive more FF damage than zombie love.

The games music score is truly immersive, and the continuous spawning of baddies makes it so you do not turn into a creep-crawl camper on this nerve wracker.

Downsides? $50 for one. Online sale of this game, with no need for delivery or store presence should keep it in the $40 range, but whatever. the other would be the lack of more maps.

But, hopefully, this is something that will soon be remedied. If valve gives this game half as much attension as some of its others with the patches and expansions, hopefully there will be a few more horror flik referenced levels in the near future! ;)

This is a great multiplayer game, especially if everyone has a mic. It needs more content such as maps, weapons, and special infected types. While the gameplay is very fun, it gets repetitive as there are only a few ways things can go even though placement of items and monsters is random.

There are some bugs in l4d, an awful lobby type system which doesn't really help to create a community. The game also needs more achievements, eg a new achievement for 1 million zombies killed would be welcome. Also, I fail to see the logic of rating it based on the players you played with, rather than the actual content of the game itself. That aside.... The game is a great concept on paper, uses the source engine so most players will have good visuals and a solid framerate, however there are a few oversights in the implementation that needs to be addressed before I give this game a 9-10. The first being melee attacks. Survivors can spam melee attacks and be almost invincible against regular zombies, and makes hunters getting a pounce in rather challenging in many parts of the maps. There are several exploits, and due to the nature of the game's matchmaking system, players may find themselves having their entire campaign ruined by a 4 year old who thinks hes so cool by spawning 20 hunter bots and watching them destroy the survivors. The game also somewhat lacks content at the moment. On release, there are 4 campaigns, 2 of which have "versus" mode, a mode where 4 players play as special infected zombies and try to stop the survivors, then they switch every round and whoever with the most points at the end, wins. These campaigns last about 1-2 hours, but with only 2 currently available for the versus mode, right now it can get a bit repetitive. All in all, a great game, a must-get for any zombie fan, but the decision to buy now or to wait for a price drop and a few patches is a decision to each their own. Expand

According to my profile, I have played Left 4 Dead for approximately 25.6 hours. I feel that is enough experience to give this game a review. For starters, there are the pros. The graphics are pretty good and the gore level is such that I wasn't too overwhelmed, yet at the same time the shooting of a zombie's head so that it explodes was quite rewarding. Other rewarding aspects According to my profile, I have played Left 4 Dead for approximately 25.6 hours. I feel that is enough experience to give this game a review. For starters, there are the pros. The graphics are pretty good and the gore level is such that I wasn't too overwhelmed, yet at the same time the shooting of a zombie's head so that it explodes was quite rewarding. Other rewarding aspects of the game included the Versus mode in which players take turns playing the Survivors and the Infected. While the Survivors try to, well, survive, the Infected's job is to essentially use teamwork to take the Survivors down. The two teams then switch their roles with the Survivors becoming Infected and vice-versa. While the online co-op can be severely crippled by several things (which I will touch on), a good team makes this game great. There is nothing like a team that wants to succeed and knows what they're doing. Positive aspects of this game also include a solid amount of reply value, on which the game truly relies. If you aren't willing to play the four core "movies" that are offered over and over again, do not buy the game and then complain that you didn't get your money's worth. While I agree that the game could use with two or three times the levels, the maps in place allow for enough variation that one doesn't get too insanely bored. My advice? Everything in moderation. Now for the cons. Like all online games, you're going to get your 10-year-old kid who, because sometimes there is no God in the world, has a mic and insists on screaming into it. Other multiplayer issues include a disturbing amount of lag caused by some of the dedicated servers as well as the fact that the computer picks which room you join and which sever your room plays in. Another flaw is the extremely limited amount of multiplayer. With only two of the four "movies" available, the multiplayer can get old, again why Left 4 Dead is best in moderation. I have not really begun to delve into the vastness which is this game. There are tons of nuances which allow for a steller and varying gameplay experience. The flipside of this is that there are also things that can make your gaming experience one of the worst, which is why Left 4 Dead got varying reviews: some had a horrible first experience and put it down right away, while some played it for 5 minutes and posted a review with as many exclamation points as possible. The truth is that Left 4 Dead will be a great experience for team players who are willing to be patient and understand that it may take an hour to find a suitable team. However, this game is a total waste of money for you Leeroys out there (you know who you are.) In short, buy this game, but don't expect a masterpiece. Expect an enjoyable game best taken bit by bit. Yes, it will have its fair share of flaws, but every game does. What will make or break this game is the amount of support Valve will give it. If Valve can release more maps (and no, I'm not talking about making the two "movies" not available in Versus mode playable, which is a cop-out), the game will have a higher re-play value. However, the company can only do so much. Once again, Left 4 Dead is what you make it. You can enjoy it or you can bitch about how crappy your team is. Either way it's your money. In terms of getting a good thrill, this game will deliver and then some more. The length of the game though may leave you slightly unhappy. After 10 hours I had all of the campaigns done along with about 50% of the achievements which is kind of quick for something supposedly bigger.

Overall my rating is based on great graphic and good action, fall short from higher score on the basis the game is too short. In terms of quality for your money, I would have to say Team Fortress 2 is 50% less expensive and whole lot more content.
This is still a great purchase and every bit will be worth it. Only time will tell whether or not Valve will add other chapters and different way of playing.

This is to all the idiots (like Steele X) complaining, first off. There are 2,593 ways that the infected will spawn, so no two games are ever the same, second. Items such as pills, medpacks and an extra pistol are spawned in one of four random places and different each time, thirdly. If you spawn and your teammates are gone your computer really sucks and must have max. ping. Fourth,This is to all the idiots (like Steele X) complaining, first off. And finaly if you cannot enjoy any bit of this there is something seriously wrong! I'm sick and tired of people rating a game because they join just ONE server full of morons and they automaticly think
"DUR, THE GAME OBVIOUSLY SUCKS BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE STUPID!!"

This is a very, very entertaining game. For the most part I got what I expected out of it. The only thing I could wish for is more weapons. The ones that are available get old after a while, although they are very satisfying to use, they feel nice and are effective.

Steele X, it sounds like you based your review on...well I don't know what you based it on as it sounds like you have no idea what you're talking about.
First off, you call the game bad because of your teammates being idiots. Apparently this is somehow Valves fault? Sorry, but that's moronic, and frankly, makes it sound like you've never played an online multiplayer

First off, you call the game bad because of your teammates being idiots. Apparently this is somehow Valves fault? Sorry, but that's moronic, and frankly, makes it sound like you've never played an online multiplayer game before. I've put in at least 30 hours to L4D by now, and I believe there was ONE game where nobody was talking or typing. Basically, if you join a game where you don't like your team? Try leaving a joining a different one. It's not rocket science.

As for your claim that the humans are hunting the zombies. In each 'movie' the humans are trying to get to a particular place. Guess what, they happen to run into zombies along the way. And I haven't ever seen anybody actually go looking for zombies, it doesn't make any sense. It also sounds like you've only been playing on normal, which I agree is too easy. Try Advanced or Expert, you will be scared every time you heard the horde music, or the snarl of a hunter, or the bellow of a tank.

Your last point is the most ludicrous. Apparently you don't know anything about the biggest AI innovation in this game, the Director. The whole point of this game is that you DON'T know where the monsters are coming from each time you play through a campaign. Why? Because the director places zombies, and throws hordes and special infected at depending on how well you're fighting, ammunition levels, health levels, how many times you've been downed, etc. This also effects the placement of pain pills and medkits.

Your entire review was based on flawed information and I wouldn't be surprised if you wrote your review after a single playthrough of one campaign.

Valve did a great job at researching and replicating zombie hunting. They've included some new features to the game as simple as automatic crouching when you come to a low spot, it's the little touches that make it stand out, I feel. Plus the new shadow and shading effects are cool too, esp. for a multiplayer game.

This is the best team game I've ever played online. It does a great job of requiring the team to work together without making it too hard.
I personally love playing as one of the infected super zombies. I wish the single player mode was a bit stronger--it's repetitive, but it's a fantastic multi-player game.

Great game. This game has exellent graphics and gameplay, it doesn't have much of a story, and I admit it gets a bit boring after a while. It is very amusing too. Not all people in multiplayer are jerks, you might even make friends. And if you people complain it's too easy, try other difficulties, it gets less boring that way aswell.

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie.

The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.

One of the finest zombie games ever made, and one of the finest co-op games ever made. The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.
