Also, the graphics / sounds is really good. So it the layout of the game.

PS. A bit repetative but still beyond all my expectations.

I gave it a ten to compensate for some of the lower scores it's been given.

5 - Graphics aren't as eye-popping as some next-gen games, but Valve's animation team is better than any of it's competitors, therefore both emotion and character come across crystal clear. A MUST BUY.
6 - Fun for absolutely any one willing to sit down and play it, even beginners.

    Valve wins again.

And I felt the same thing in this game for about the first 15min of play. Then it became retarded. If you stand around pop zombies heads off with a rifle 1 by 1 or throw a pipe bomb and have them all run to it like a shiny red ball you will never get rid of them all. Somehow there is always more coming like a respawn wave. Witch at first seems scary because you don't know when the next wave will come but then becomes stupid because you can't hold any ground. In any movie I have ever seen on zombies they can always hold their ground and there are always just a finite number of zombies. There is a LOT of them but not infinite. If they would have made it like the movie I am Legend where you tag 1 or 2 here and there then there is a huge random group it would have been great. Or say you start out in a city 4 of you and 178,567 of them and there is a city population counter going at all times I could have lived with that. But the way its setup now is just cheap. No rime or reason just zombie waves coming at you every 5min like clock work. Some triggers them like a car alarm or throwing a pipe bomb but mostly it's just retarded. Say it wasn't so linear and I could collect items and throw them like we used to in the first counterstrike games then when you have a good number of ammo and bombs you go up on a roof top in a building that you have CLEARED maybe 1 or 2 still hang around that you missed but its god damn cleared and set off that car alarm from the roof by firing at the car and see 5,000 zombies collect around it all confused on why there are no brains to eat then you start chucking bombs and empting shells on them and watch that population counter drop like a rock. And be able to get in that car like Carmagedon and roll over zombies till your car is trashed from all the zombies punching it or you get in a group that's way too big and they tare the car apart with you in it like say towards the end of Resident Evil Extinction or on the docks in I am Legend.
I don't know maybe im asking too much of my zombie games :(

This is a great multiplayer game, especially if everyone has a mic. It needs more content such as maps, weapons, and special infected types. While the gameplay is very fun, it gets repetitive as there are only a few ways things can go even though placement of items and monsters is random.

Left 4 Dead has the potential to be an 8/10 or even 9/10, but in its current state as of 12-01-2008 - it has been handicapped by a less-than-finished feel & numerous bugs. With the additions of these updates (and with the history Valve has with their past titles) it is likely that this game will live up to the 8/9 or even 9/10 score as stated above and by numerous users & reviewers.

    The Flaws:
    ----------------

    A)
The most noticeable issue for first-time users of the versus mode is simply the lack of content. While there are 4 'Movies' in the Cooperative/Single-Player campaigns - in versus, there are only 2; one of them being the least spectacular of the four (Blood Harvest), the other being that which was previewed in the Demo (No Mercy). While both are entertaining initially - they sometimes become tiring and leave you begging for the other two. Hopefully the addition of the original remaining two ('Death Toll' & 'Dead Air') will be released early 2009

My review is going to be parallel with a reply to Steele X's terribly uninformed review. Not only does the man underrates the game much more drastically than others overrate it, he seems to base his review of a superficial experience.

My review is going to be parallel with a reply to Steele X's terribly uninformed review. Not only does the man underrates the game much more drastically than others overrate it, he seems to base his review of a superficial experience.

First of all, your team-mates can be idiots, who run off only to get slaughtered, don't help you when you're in trouble, and keep shooting you in the back. But Left 4 Dead isn't meant to be played with random people. If you think you can successfully cooperate with a stranger from the Internet, you must be new to this whole online thing. Unless you have friends and/or are willing to make new ones, this game isn't for you.

Secondly, the game randomises everything. Perhaps not to the extent of Diablo, but enough to vary each playthrough. Only stashes of ammunition are found in the same places; the location of everything else can only be guessed.

Thirdly, if you are bored playing Left 4 Dead, you might want to stop playing on Easy or Normal. The game should be played at least on Advanced, though you'll have the most fun on Expert. It'll take you half of a day to finish just one campaign full of unimaginably intense battles.

Then there's Versus, where you get to play as one of the special Infected and slaughter the Survivors, ruining their attempt to escape. After all, that's what the game is about - surviving, and shooting zombies while you're at it. When playing with your buddies on Expert, you certainly won't see anyone going out of their way for some frags.

This game is what you make it to be.

I would have given this game a 9 due to lack of content (would far exceed a 10 if only there were some more campaigns) but since some idiot that plays on easy and still doesn't know how to play with others gave it a 0, I had to try to give it a more accurate score. There is NO zombie game, mod or level that can compare to L4D. The best game of 2008

Valve did a great job at researching and replicating zombie hunting. They've included some new features to the game as simple as automatic crouching when you come to a low spot, it's the little touches that make it stand out, I feel. Plus the new shadow and shading effects are cool too, esp. for a multiplayer game.

All in all the game was fun but in the long term (meaning past 3 hours of play time) one can only hope that a flood of custom maps and content come out although since HL2 I have noticed not many mods make it out of the gate to the public. I do not regret buying the game but It would be nice if the game was priced properly with its play time.

Whats also cool are Zombie Bosses. There really annoying in Campaign Expert, including Tank, but multiplayer or Versus makes it addicting to use these guys. Now The only thing I don't like is some glitches and there's only two maps on Versus Mode. This game should get a better rating if Valve does their best to upgrade different activities. What would be nice if there were servers that has 24 slots or more. Something that resembles the Counter-Strike Source Zombie Mod or Zombie Panic Source. First off, you call the game bad because of your teammates being idiots. Apparently this is somehow Valves fault? Sorry, but that's moronic, and frankly, makes it sound like you've never played an online multiplayer game before. I've put in at least 30 hours to L4D by now, and I believe there was ONE game where nobody was talking or typing. Basically, if you join a game where you don't like your team? Try leaving a joining a different one. It's not rocket science.

As for your claim that the humans are hunting the zombies. In each 'movie' the humans are trying to get to a particular place. Guess what, they happen to run into zombies along the way. And I haven't ever seen anybody actually go looking for zombies, it doesn't make any sense. It also sounds like you've only been playing on normal, which I agree is too easy. Try Advanced or Expert, you will be scared every time you heard the horde music, or the snarl of a hunter, or the bellow of a tank.

Your last point is the most ludicrous. Apparently you don't know anything about the biggest AI innovation in this game, the Director. The whole point of this game is that you DON'T know where the monsters are coming from each time you play through a campaign. Why? Because the director places zombies, and throws hordes and special infected at depending on how well you're fighting, ammunition levels, health levels, how many times you've been downed, etc. This also effects the placement of pain pills and medkits.

Your entire review was based on flawed information and I wouldn't be surprised if you wrote your review after a single playthrough of one campaign.

The single player is excellent, but to make it more effective you have to have more campaigns than what was initially released. Co-op gameplay is where it is at. You have to understand that if you go into a random server with random people in ANY game you will be left out to dry at least half the time. This game requires a lot of teamwork when you're playing on expert (in versus and co-op campaign). If you can't work in a team, single player will give you some satisfaction, but don't expect the world out of the game because after all it is centered around Co-op play and other human (and zombie) interaction. Steele X claimed that zombies respawn in the same areas and med packs are located in the same place every time you play a level. This is a false statement. The AI director that was incorporated into the game changes the style of gameplay by spawning zombies and items in random areas. This even includes boss zombies. You won't know when you'll encounter a tank, and you won't even know if you're going to encounter it at all. Valve does an excellent job in implementing the AI Director into L4D. To give a game less merit than it deserves because your teammates were assholes is a bad reason to give it a "6-7." If you had any friends at all, you wouldn't play with random people across servers anyways. The gameplay is interactive and contains awesome scenarios. You'll go through airports, hospital buildings, sewers, and urban areas to get rescued. There is a versus mode where you can play as boss infected. In my opinion, it is so much fun. It's fun to play as boomers, hunters, or tanks as you incapacitate helpless survivors. When you play as survivors in versus mode, you're more alert and the need to help your friends become more important in order to win. Game of the Year? Not quite, but it's very close.
Well, no one makes a decision to buy a game after reading metacritic user reviews/ratings anyways.

It's amazing how Valve could turn such a generic genre into something brilliant. Don't listen to the ones who rates 0 says, they expected way too much. I, for one, had doubts, but it turned out to be amazing. There are not that many weapons, but it doesn't feels they are needed, and Valve will surely add more content. I'm not saying that L4D is the best FPS out there, and I don't think it was meant to break the industry, so I'm not going to pretend like it has to be perfect. That being said, this game is insanely fun to play. While it is repetitive in one sense, it still keeps players on their toes due to the randomly placed boss zombies and power ups. This is much better than what CS and CS:S offered... those games were as repetitive as FPSs dared to be. Yes, the story is non-existant, but the point wasn't in the story, the point of the entire game was to get shooting and blow the crap out of zombies. However, the real jewel in this game is the fact that players are forced to work together to make it through each "movie", and this objective is fully realized in the brilliant mechanics of the game. In any case, if you're looking for a gripping story... go play fallout 1 and 2 or half-life or baldur's gate. If it's cooperative zombie blasting action you're craving, this game fulfills like a dream. Expand

There's absolutely no doubt that Left 4 Dead is one of the most social and exciting multiplayer games that we've ever played. It's almost pitch perfect in how it captures the tension and the action of a Hollywood zombie movie.

The inventive and highly entertaining competitive multiplayer mode just adds to the experience, and we're looking forward to seeing what Valve's got planned for the game's future. Out of all the titles that have shaped the Year of Living Cooperatively, this may be the best experience of them all.

One of the finest zombie games ever made, and one of the finest co-op games ever made. The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.
