Layers of Fear really brings a lot of improvements that amplify the game's strongest aspect: its immersive atmosphere. Audio and visuals are almost impeccable in this release, and they're truly worth experiencing. That said, playing through all of the content on offer in this remake/remaster collection does stretch the gameplay a bit too thin over its runtime, and it slowly wears out its welcome. What remains is a repetitive and sometimes tame horror adventure game that's worth experiencing for its presentation alone.

While Bloober Team has achieved immersive visual enhancements through Unreal Engine 5, the game itself did not deviate from the original 'Layers of Fear' series. If you cannot be satisfied with enjoying the game's expanded madness within a single title, it will simply feel more like a definitive edition.

Despite some technical and gameplay weaknesses, Layers of Fear is an entertaining horror adventure that looks fantastic thanks to Unreal Engine 5. Clear purchase recommendation for horror and graphics fans. People who have already played the series might want to stay away, due to a lack of innovation.

All the tweaks and cosmetic improvements are clearly not enough to consider Layers of Fear 2023 a completely new game. If you were not familiar with the original releases, then be sure to try the compilation. But apart from the main plot, the writer's storyline is clearly not worth the money.

Layers of Fear 2023 really isn't the most necessary remake ever and those who didn't like the original games certainly won't be converted, but this is a pretty compelling package for psychological horror fans.

Technical hiccups aside, Layers of Fear wraps up the series in a graphically enhanced package that is easily the best way for players both new and old to experience the franchise.

Bloober Team's bundle of horror returns, with impressive graphics and solid scary moments, but clumsy storytelling and technical issues dampen the series' curtain call.

Layers of Fear is difficult to recommend to anyone but hardcore franchise or genre fans. Newcomers might as well play this package over the originals seeing as they’re the definitive versions of each game. It’s a shame that a definitive version of a Layers of Fear game still doesn’t receive high praise. Layers of Fear 2023 feels like it wants to be a more substantial remake, meanwhile being too afraid to go the extra mile. If Bloober Team took the time to radically change the titles, along with further fleshing out its frame narrative, we could have had something special.

Layers of Fear is a shiny remake with the same dull and slightly uneasy story that plagued the original titles. While it masters elements of a hallucinogenic game with smooth transitions and creative mind-boggling settings, I was never even slightly scared, surprised, or excited.

Layers of Fear is an atmospheric tour through the shattered psyches of some seriously tortured artists, but predictable shock tactics fail to provide more than a handful of genuine scares, let alone layers of them.

Layers of Fears maintains the original vein with its psychedelic horror and immersive storytelling, but falls short in many ways. The game introduces a new generation of more demanding graphics and cannot compete with recent games. For players who have already played the previous games it won't be a big deal, but it might attract new players.

The 2023 Layers of Fear is definitely the best way to experience the Layers of Fear games, but they were never particularly good to begin with. While Layers of Fear is what put Bloober Team on the map, the studio has put out significantly better games since then, like sci-fi horror game Observer, the Blair Witch game, and the Silent Hill-inspired The Medium. Horror fans should consider checking those out before taking a chance with Layers of Fear.
