  1. More content for a brilliant strategy game.
  2. A new way to look at RTS games and a great story that may change how you view those "other" RTS games.

It made me wonder a little why it wasn't just a good expansion. For while the game is still good, and there have been some new units and maps added, the gameplay is almost exactly the same as the original.

We’re lucky enough to be blessed with two Kohan games in one calendar year that both deliver some of the best RTS action we’ve seen in a while. [Feb 2002, p.102]

Ahriman's Gift is one of the best that the genre has to offer. If you buy any RTS game this year, make sure you check out the Kohans.
  6. A baby-step improvement, not a must-have for owners of the first game.

Though Ahriman's Gift is far superior to the original Kohan, it still feels like the same experience. [Apr 2002, p.71]
  8. Those who played the original will simply find the same game in a new package...If you've never taken up arms in the Kohan universe, this is your second chance to introduce yourself to a new brand of real-time strategy game--and you shouldn't miss it again.
  9. Kohan is one of the few that not only mixes resource management and solid tactical play, but a couple of turn-based wargaming conventions to boot.

But for all these minor changes, Kohan still feels like the same game. Perhaps worst of all is the fact that the multiplayer community is now effectively split in two. Ahriman's Gift won't work with the original game.

Kohan Ahirman's Gift and Immortal Sovereigns are brilliant games that still hold up against anything else on the market. Innovative for its time and still not replicated, this is a game you must play to call yourself an RTS fan.

It is just too bad that Timegate ruined the sequel by changing the game and restricting freedom. Now that Timegate is defunct, perhaps someone will pickup the IP and give us a proper reboot/sequel.

The expansion did not bring much in the way of content just some new units... but it's the best of the series. Kohan is the most strategic of any RTS I've played. It had the unique concept of companies rather than individual units which greatly reduced the combat micro allowing greater focus on battle strategy. This was complimented by a great economic model that got rid of the 'resource gatherer' and construction micro of Warcraft series, The biggest drawback to the game was the multi player match making which could not compete with Battlenet. 10 years after release and I still enjoy playing this game.
