The combat is strategic and challenging if you are playing on HARD difficulty and not playing a full mage. I've gotten beat from lower level monsters if i stopped playing tactically and started mashing. The world also offers much content, exploration, and variety in environments. The dungeons are amazing for the most part and the loot is even better as there are certain sets you can get which urges you to explore and try to get them all and not to mention the fact they look amazing! There are some issues like FOV and control rebinding but those are negligible considering the fact the interface works amazingly well for PC despite looking a little hideous. The npcs might stand around and the towns might feel dead but overall the story, lore, combat, variety, loot, quests, dungeons and so much more makes up for every flaw the game could have. This game definitely deserves more recognition and I recommend this to any fan of RPGS. Expand

CONS : This game fails to deliver anything that resembles a compelling atmosphere/story, the difficulty level is also so easy that you can just mash your way to victory. This is a good game in my opinion. Graphics are nice (Not amazing graphics, but the art style was obviously deliberate to those who say the graphics are bad), No bugs runs smooth as a whistle. As others have stated, you can tell this was to be an MMO at some point, and it would fit in well as an MMO. It sorta does feel lacking without any online play. But overall is an enjoyable game.

Excellent game all around, a rich and vibrant world with a deep lore backbone. The combat is very satisfying with great animations and hit detection, and the sound effects are absolutely perfect.

It is on the easy side, no dark souls here difficulty wise, even on hard it is pretty easy for me, ymmv of course based on how good you are at these types of games or just generally at games in general.

The combat is superb, but the game is let down by the sheer overdose of quests that are thrown at you. More than often you feel compelled into completing every last quest in your log before continuing, but doing so will only lead to more and more side quests which will ultimately lead you to finding the game extremely repetitive as all quests are either kill X amount of monsters or loot these items then return to quest giver. There's a very big world to explore but it does lack the depth of quest variation like titles such as Skyrim or WoW. On that note, be prepared for A LOT of looting as this game is looting galore. However, if you enjoy paying attention to the silly plots of the hundreds of side quests then rejoice as you will have hundreds of hours of content for you to play with.

The profession trees are levelled by talents points gained each level and they not very innovative. You will find most of them not very useful save for the crafting ones in which luck will decide whether you will have the mats to make a better item than what you are currently wearing.

The voice acting is moderate at best, and the camera can sometimes be extremely frustrating and bug out, and there's also no option to adjust the field of view.

Wrapping up, if the developers had put more time into enhancing main quests and making them a little more innovating rather than throwing in hundreds of side quests this could've been a great game. However, if you truly wish to enjoy this title, follow the story of the faction quest lines and the main quest line and only do a handful of side quests in each area before moving on to keep the experience exciting and fresh. Don't bore yourself before you get to the end.

To wrap things up, KOAR has good character customization, great combat, too many quests to keep serious track of, an overload of looting, and can get very repetitive. If you pace yourself the right way and not hang around in the one area for too long you should make it to the end.

All in all a entertaining game with a playtime of about 70-100 hours depending on whether you do the side quests or not.

Kingdoms of Amalur is a great action-RPG. It's pretty much the game Dragon Age 2 should have been and compares favorably to Skyrim. I really don't understand the harsh reviews, so I'll focus on what many have listed as it's short-comings.

-Generic fantasy world. I didn't really find this to be the case. It's much less generic than the setting of the Elder Scrolls. It's at least as original as the Dragon Age setting. Sure it uses traditional fantasy races like elves and gnomes. But it also draws elements from other traditional folk lore that hasn't been touched as much. -Not open world. Of course it is! Movement isn't as free as it is in Skyrim, but it's close to Fallout. Really, navigation is pretty much identical to Dragon Age - you can't jump and the areas are fairly "narrow." For example, you'll run through a forest and have to stick to paths. But you have the freedom to go anywhere you want at any time - that's open world. Saying this game isn't open world is like saying that the GTA games weren't open world since there are buildings that force you to stay on streets. The first region of the game does feel a little flat and claustrophobic, but this changes later in the game. You'll find a desert canyon area that has plenty of dimension, a plains area that is much more wide open, etc.

-Weak story, characters, and side quests. I really like the main plot. The whole fate is a really interesting aspect, and it definitely has that epic feel without being too cliched. I think the characters are also very interesting. There's the traditional wizened world-guide character, but he's much different from the stereotype as he has personal issues that make him very interesting. I think the other main character is enigmatic and compelling. I've played a ton of RPGs, and the side quests in this game are very original and don't feel very repetitive. Yes, there are a fair share of "go here and get this item," but there are others which don't fit the traditional mold and most have good plots and twists that make you want to do them. If we're comparing KoA to Skryim, I feel that KoA has the vastly superior plot, deeper and more original characters, and side-quests that are at least as good and in many cases better than those found in Skyrim.

-Graphics. I actually agree here. They're serviceable, not amazing. Definitely cartoonish, which does seem to clash a little with the somewhat dark nature of the setting. Probably 6/10 for these.

-Camera. This can be annoying. You can't manually zoom, which leaves you really close in to your character when exploring. This contributes to the sort of claustrophobic feel, and if you could zoom out you might be able to enjoy the surrounding environment a bit more. In combat, the camera doesn't rotate to give you a good view of your enemies enough. Sometimes it will zoom waaay out to try to give you a view of an enemy that is far enough away that it's not a threat, and giving you a poor view of the enemies you're actually engaging. Not game-ruining, by any stretch, but plenty of room for improvement.

In conclusion, KoA is a great RPG. The combat is fast-paced and interesting. Character customization is really flexible, letting you mix and match abilities rather than confining you to narrow character classes. The main plot and side quests are engaging. Again, compared to Skyrim, it has better story, characters, and combat. It is less immersive due to weaker graphics, camera, exploration, and interaction with the environment. I'd say they are about on the same level, a solid 9/10. I feel like giving it a 10/10 to balance out those ridiculous 1/10 reviews, but I'll just be honest with my score.

To me, this game is what would be the result if Skyrim and WoW had a baby. And that baby was premature and retarded. They leave all the great things about both on the wayside.

The combat is nice at first, but it gets old fast. If this were a multiplayer game, it'd be a lot more fun. And I tend to hate multiplayer games, but AI is entirely too predictable. It doesn't hurt that there are only about a dozen different enemies. Bandits, Bears, Tuatha, Ogres, Bolg, Sprites, Brownies, Boggarts, Bog Threshes, those undead Faer things, those banshee things, and then the fishman things and their spawner. Might be another one or two things, but that's seriously it. And all of these things have predictable fighting styles. Within some of those creature types are 2-3 other soldier types, but it makes little difference in the end.

Quests are simple. "Go there, kill that." And that's pretty much it, aside from the Fed-Ex quests. The main story isn't anything special. Some of the plot-line battles are fun, but few and far apart.

Also, one of my biggest pet peeves... this game has armor sets, but it's a single player and most of them are random drops. So, you end up running around with a several incomplete sets, and no way to trade for what you're missing. Honestly, if you're on the fence... I'd wait until it's on sale on Steam for around $20. I had to force myself to finish it because I had lost all interest, but felt like I should wait until I'd finished it to actually critique it.

VERY simple and streamlined game. For first 10 or so levels it MIGHT seem like some good crpg ,but I simply realized how MUCH simplification and streamlining this game has.
No real dialogues - every character just have 2-4 things you can ask them about ,but it is not real conversation with question and answers.
Later in levels like from 15 level or so ,game changes into slasher like game.

I play on hard difficulty and while in beggining there might be some tough fights if you play "weaker" builds , then later on you just faceroll everything.

OP crafting, insane amounts of XP for quests and kills so you will find yourself very OP quickly if you do most quests in areas, money after level 10 is not an issue - I just bathe in it.

Game CLEARLY made for consoles. It just scream console !

Don't treat it like Skyrim , The Withcher 2 or older crpg's (Baldur ,Fallout) with action combat.

While in beggining it might seem like it - after level ~ 10 you will be stripped away from those "dreams".

Just slasher / action game with some very limited RPG's-ish mechanics cause that's 'trendy' now and increase potential audience.

The main story and setting may not be as immersive as Skyrim or Mass Effect, but it's very good for a hack & slay game like this.

Speaking of Skyrim, you should not make the fault to compare these two games. The only thing they share is the major flaw of both: It get's dull once you start fast-travelling a lot. From my POV, this may just be a sign that games are getting too long these days to stay entertaining from start to finish. Dont complain about "cartoon graphics" if you are THE moron that just bought a game that is HYPED AS using the artistic direction of a "COMIC BOOK ARTIST" it really makes you look stupider than you can possibly be (i also find it kind of amusing that these same idiots complaining about the graphics creamed their jeans over skyrim having dx9 recycled fallout textures.. way to go humanity). Dont complain about a game being a console port because it uses a controller, if you own a pc but dont have a controller hooked up to it at this point you are not a pc "gamer" you are just a pc owner who plays games. Lastly dont look at what is essentially a prequel to an orpg that is intended to introduce players to the world, combat system and lore and start complaining about "missing features" because it shows exactly how little you know about the game.

Onto what they did right... This game is what happens when you pay talented people to get creative and make a game, as opposed to hiring people to make a game. To me it represents a new era in gaming where it will no longer be acceptable to just hire a bunch of wankers with degrees in game design and tell them to "Get creative" because the way they are educated pretty much stamps creativity out of them since they all learn the same material and unless they want to fail (and thus not have a degree) they will answer just like everyone else in said course. The world, characters, and gameplay are all beautiful. Sure there are quests to "go kill things" but what the hell else would you do in a game which is primarily about... you know killing things? Should there be quests to go knit a scarf? ..daft **** you are also supposed to go find things but because that just gives you perks i suppose it doesnt count as a quest, do achievements count as quests because theres those too.. and twists of fate. Even when you think you have a really good understanding of what is going on in the game you realize you are just getting through the outer layer.

The combat system is AMAZINGLY fun and intuitive, if you dont like the camera angle boo hoo give up on video games because there is no way to make this kind of game where the camera angle will satisfy everyone (do in large part to the number of skill-less players who would just zoom out 100% so they can see everything for 200 yards around them so they dont have to rely too much on their reflexes). If i had to find something wrong with it i would say it is TOO easy and they should implant the ninja gaiden black AI to make the enemies more interesting.

The story is obviously REALLY good aswell, but then again you wouldnt expect a best selling author to write a turd to base a video game on now would you? Again, the quests make sense! Yes you are the hero, YES you kill things, and YES that is an in demand skill in a world full or monsters and treachery! Personally i think 80% of people who consider themselves gamers are secretly aspiring needlepoint masters which is why they cant get over the quests involving killing things caveat.

The best thing i would have to say is that Ken Rolston is THRIVING away from bethesda, this world layout is fantastic. While im sure some people would rather it was more "open" im pretty sure it was a design decision to keep the idiots from wandering too far and then complaining about how they wasted 2 hours running only to die. The nice high ceilings indoors and the amount of space you have to work in all fit together really well. Not that anyone needs to tell him but Ken is Da' Man. Even if bethesda had hired 30 migrant workers (instead of the 9 they claim to have used for skyrim) it would still just be a pale imitation of what Ken does.

Overall this game demands attention from people like bethesda (can they go any further down the **** only time will tell) and bioware (aka. blablabla ware) because it shows that their formulas for making rpg's are dead. We dont HAVE to sit through 72 hours of boring voice acted dialog to know what is going on in a game, nor do we NEED a pseudo FPS control scheme to explore a world. We can have FUN controlling our character and have a sense of urgency in out interactions with NPC's. Finally, if you are playing this game with a keyboard and mouse you are a moron, spend the 30$ and leave the stone ages behind you (or stick to wow). If the game looks like crap to you maybe you need to play on a 47 inch 3D screen so the pixels have some room to breathe. If you were expecting realistic world and character models you are just a dumb ass for not picking up on Todd McFarlane having his name all over this game. The one and only legit reason to hate on this game is that it is published by EA so we have to give them more $ to make all the crap games they make, i bet alot of the fools reviewing this game only played the demo and have no idea what the actual game is like.

The story isn't going to grab you and make you have to "just play one more hour". it's not bad but it's not great either, which was disappointing as R.A. Salvatore had a hand in the story.
Technically I haven't run into any major bugs. The game is quite solid with 2 exceptions. 1.) The camera needs some work on the PC version. PC users should be able to zoom the camera out a little bit. 2.) The KB&M is super awkward due to the combat system. It is much more enjoyable to play this game with a controller, if you're on PC due yourself a favor and get a USB Xbox 360 controller.
In conclusion, this game is perfect for people who like RPG's but want some real "action" to the combat.

WE are serious people about our games, though most of "Us" whine when games tax our systems, and we whine when they do not; go figure. The controls are clunky with aiming, again due to CONSOLE porting, it leaves the accuracy and what we are "used to" as PC gamers out. So that's the bad, or most of it from my standpoint. The good?

It is FUN! It is a "hack and slash" RPG, though in some ways more hack and slash. The RP elements are very strong when you look at the differences in class and character builds that can be done. It is HUGE on build potential via the mechanics. I've been playing for about 30 hours thus far, and have seen VERY few bugs (That's impressive, since even the worst games suffer from perennial bugs on day 1 releases) aside from an install issue, I've had 0 issues with it. The gameplay and fighting isn't "Japanisized" as most "action" games seem to go toward lately, which is terribly annoying, though the swords are a tad huge, they aren't the size of cars like FF and the others that give me nausea. The story line is GREAT and gripping, if you take the time to invest your thought in it at the beginning of the game. Sure, some concepts are tired, but...what more is there for RPGs or any other game for that matter? It isn't as if there are thousands of "New" ways of adding role playing elements to any gaming structure. Did I mention the fighting is fun? It is, though my mouse finger is TIRED! The game is smooth, no stuttering at all with everything maxed, sure that's because of the consoleesque textures, but still, I've played uglier that ran MUCH worse. Has all the "Usual" characters, but they are a necessity in most all RP style games in a not-modern environment. The voice acting though a bit stiff, is good. The lip syncing is outstanding, the company that did the facial animation is top-notch at their profession it seems. People comparing it to Skyrim are silly, it looks and feels nothing like it. If you don't like a game because it is "Different" then that is your issue, not the developers' fact is, without those differences we'd be even more bored and all be playing some nonsensical Reality TV based RP or WoW instead. It is rich, well written and if you don't click through everything it will grab your mind. Play with it, the options are endless and differ well enough to give anyone a challenge in some way.

I dont mind the cartoon type graphics, its a high fantasty game after all I love the funny personalities and the cool magic weapons, at last a magic weapon that really kicks butt! THE CHAKRAS! In some other games being a commited magic user was impossible, but in thIs game my character can really have fun just being a mage and im loving that. I am also looking forward to trying out the other builds in future replays. Im on my first playthrough and am managing most missions without problems and very few bugs, well none so far which is excellent imo. The story is ok but I do get side tracked easily by people I meet who need help and I really want to help them, their storues are interesting and fun. Would love some flirting or romance options but glad its not done badly as in skyrim, better no romance than what skyrim had to offer.
One thing that has really annoyed me about this game and many others too I might add is that although many mage armours have different names they all look the same, the only thing that cahnges is the stats. I am up to level 18 with about a weeks worth of playing, MANY many hours and I have only found about four different armour designs. Its a bit disappointing as I love the way I can see my character whenever I want too and I am able to change her hairstyle and colour and accessories etc. Love that, yaay! But I would love a much better range of armour styles. One of the best ever games for this was Neverwinter Nights 2. They had hundreds of different armours and styles, man what a game that was!!
Oh and another thing, Anders from Dragon Age, the mage? His voice is everywhere in this game and I am really tired of meeting people and hearing his voice, he must have done about a third of the voice acting jobs, he was even in the latest star wars game too, just becoming too familiar to me. I dont like that.
I think the crafting system is nice, I am enjoying using it. I love the skills system, easy and straightforward for me and I think the maps and map travel is lovely. I wish I had a unicorn to ride on though, hehe. I am still in honeymoon phase with this game as in enjoying it very very much and am hoping I continue to do so. Just edited my score as I think this game is more and 8 than a 9.

-When you play a game and say "I wish it would do this". Reckoning probably does. -Personally I like the story. It's nothing mindblowing but it's not a con (there is a con to it though)

Graphically it won't break any records but the game runs very smoothly and it does look very atmospheric especially some of the caves.

The music is suitably ethereal and builds the scene well.

    Pros:

Easy to play, difficult to master
Excellent fighting mechanics (entering Fate mode is awesome)
    Good voice acting
Loads and loads of side quests
    Reasonably good character customization
    Decent storyline so far Cons

Characters are a bit stereotype-y but that's personal preference

Skyrim, Fable and Fallout 3 are among my favorite games of all time, and they are all infinitely more buggy which is understandable for such big games. I don't wanna talk about character models so much cuz they suck, the environment is OK nothing breathtaking and seems kinda outdated because it seems it should have been made for the year 2006 or something like that. Also the thing that annoys me is that i like the fact that the wold is HUGE but there is so little to do other than just plain grinding mobs like in an mmo that i actually haven't even been able to continue playing on daly basis because i know what awaits me for the next 2 hours ingame and really i don't wanna waste so much time for grinding, if i wanna play an mmo I'll do that and chat ingame with my buddy's while we grind. Pros: Some of the most fun combat I've ever played in an RPG; it flows extremely well, and has a ton of depth. My big gripe with a lot of other games is how clunky and/or boring the combat is. KoA has none of these problems and the combat alone would make it worth playing. However, almost everything else about it is also excellent. The writing is very well done. I'm finding myself quite wrapped up in the universe and on a lot of the main quest lines. There's a lot to it and it's fairly complex, but if you spend time talking to the important NPCs there's a ton to get out of it. The loot system is very well done, everything feels very unique and crafting is quite satisfying. I actually like the graphics even though some people seem to have a problem with them. They certainly aren't realistic, but I think they go well with the type of game it is. The environments and enemies all look great so long as you're not looking for gritty realism. Overall, this game has very few flaws, and they're minor ones at that. It's very unique in the genre, and I highly recommend that everyone play it.

The world is barren, and feels like an empty MMO server. The storyline is incredibly bad, and you will find yourself skipping through all of it after the first few dialogues. Zones and quests don't take into account character level so you end up fighting mobs way below your level. The main ability called "Reckoning" will end boss fights in 1-2 hits, making even the hardest encounters very very easy. All in all the game just needs to be balanced. Speaking of RPG, the character creation is a joke, there's presets to be chosen from, neon glowing lipstick and hair colors, and ridiculous face tattoos. I'm baffled that in an age where facial 3D morphing is implemented in character creation, we are left with 20 premade choices!

Crafting exists in this game but seems basic and too easy, not really a crafting in it's true name, just gather stuff in the world (gathering is a decent word, more likely looting) and assemble them in town. The lockpicking and dispell actions are very badly done: lockpicking is more based on your luck rather than your skill and in order to dispell you need to do it at least 10 times to get it right, badly explained and frustrating because it's time limited.

Graphics are old, somewhere around the WOW age, but improved with tons of blur to make it look filtered. Colors look fake, objects are squarish and again too much blur.

Dialogues are well made, congrats to that, the combat system is very well made, no complaints there, also I haven't noticed bugs or glitches. Quests are a bit too many and too stupid, but maybe you need them to appeal to a fantasy niche. Creatures are extremely cartoonish and child like, again the fantasy niche.

All in all I had the feel of playing a more budget-wise version of Torchlight and after getting bored through the demo I am convinced this is not for me and do not see much potential of it.

This game is great. The storyline is way better then Skyrim. The combat is better then Skyrim. The only thing Skyrim has on this game is Graphics. Which I could care less about. I'm looking for a game worth playing and This game was well worth it, Pros- Storyline, Combat, The World.

Cons- Graphics, Your char does get over powered, and Hard mode is to easy.

    Worth playing!

I'm 20 hours into the game, and I am having a blast. It is a classic RPG with an updated (and awesome!) combat system, and what makes it so enjoyable is that it knows what it is and doesn't try to be something else. There are even some wonderful moments of self-effacing humor when the game pokes fun at itself and the genre as a whole. I only give it an 8 (which is actually a very good score coming from me) because of two issues: 1) I wish I could zoom the camera out. This is a common complaint, and probably the biggest problem with the game. Most of the time, when I'm just running around, it isn't an issue (except that I can't properly appreciate all the attention to detail that went into the backgrounds!). But in combat, it can actually become detrimental. I'd really like to be able to pull back and get a more tactical view of the situation. 2) I really, really wish there were hotkeys to access the inventory and quest screens immediately from any other screen. And on a related note (issue 2.5, I suppose), the inventory setup is clunky and a bit annoying. Perhaps it works better for console users, but I'd prefer being able to see a list of all my items immediately upon entering the inventory screen instead of having to navigate through a menu system. But I'd put up with the inventory clunkiness if I just had a hotkey! Also, the voice acting isn't the best. It isn't terrible, but it isn't great either. There are times when the reading of a particular line (the way the person says it) is just plain wrong, and as an actor/director in RL, that drives me nuts. But unlike, say, Mass Effect or DA:Origins, this is not a character-driven story, so I can forgive the lack of attention in that area. The real treat, story-wise, is in reading every little thing you come across. This is a lore-driven game, so if you don't have the patience for that, you will end up feeling like you're just running around killing stuff for no reason. As for those who have complained that this is just a "single-player MMO," that's not an entirely inaccurate description. But I don't think there's anything wrong with that. That's what RPGs have always been, in a way. All in all, this game is just good old-fashioned RPG fun with fantastic combat mechanics. To the developers, I say, "Job well done." Expand

Comparisons to Fable have been made; yes, it looks similar. It's full of British voice actors. It has a 'cartoony' look to it. Even the combat is similar in style. But it has a much richer loot system, with weapon after item after potion being found; on enemies, in chests, in shops. The combat is also vastly superior and, whilst I am a Fable fan, KOA:R at times feels like the game Fable fans *wanted* it to be.

You also hear people knock the graphics. Well, it looks pretty, and Skyward Sword certainly looks no worse for a game that has come out after 2010. Again, it has that thatched-cottage Fable feel to it, though the open-world aspect is a bit of a misnomer, with even forest locations being basically large, outdoor rooms. Again, nobody seemed to knock Zelda for this.

Comparisons to Skyrim I don't understand. I love Skyrim, and think it was the best game of 2011. But that was gritty, brutal, fantasy, akin to 'Game of Thrones'. You could kick a wolf in the face, run a man through with a sword, chop a barmaids head off. You won't find that here. Admittedly, some of the special moves can be surprisingly violent, with your character sticking magical spikes through opponents faces, and the stealth kills leave nothing to the imagination.

All in all, this game is a safe pair of hands. It borrows a lot of familiar aspects from well-trodden titles; Elder Scrolls, Fable, WOW, God of War even (how about those QTE finishing moves ay?). But it's not a bad game, and certainly has some effort behind it. A lot of these reviews will give it 7's or 8's. From that you can confer that if the idea of playing Skyrim, Zelda, Fable or WOW doesn't appeal to you, then don't come here. But if you think action-oriented RPG-lites are a fun way to waste time... well, then dive on in.

The combat system is outstanding and the abilities are really a lot of fun. Most of my time is with a rogue style character but even my low level caster and warrior will see more play. For those comparing TES to KOA, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I've loved the TES series from the beginning but the combat was always a bit weak. KOA does great in this area. Where could KOA do better? 1) The inventory system on the PC is pitiful--way too many clicks to sort out and compare items, 2) variety of adversaries--good but I agree with others in that it could be even deeper, 3) default keymapping was a hand cramping nightmare--I nearly gave up playing until fiddling with it, 4) more options in character creation with more depth of meaningful choices, 5) broader skill set (as opposed to the abilities) or at least make all the current ones more balanced between each other (lockpicking and others are worthless.) All this being said, I'm having a blast with Amalur and will be playing several different characters through the engaging storyline. For those that gave the game a 3 or less...really? I don't think I've ever played a 3 or less in my life. If I had, it would have been memorable as the most pitiful failure I'd ever spent money on. Do we really have to throw scores to the extreme?

In closing, I'd love to see a program pulling the best features of both the TES and KOA franchises together. To be honest, based on this initial attempt by 38 Studios, I think the next version of KOA could be the prime contender to a fully realized game world with a very engaging combat system.

Reckoning's combat very much reminds me of Fable, which is certainly a plus, while the exploration and size of the world are akin to Skyrim. If you really like Fable, but want a lot more content, this game will be very appealing to you. Don't let the Skyrim "fan-boys," trolls, and haters dissuade you; this is a very good game that has excellent art direction, combat, world immersion, story, etc.

Character classes are the three standard archetypes - fighter, rogue, mage, and any combination of the three you desire. Every time you level up, you place a skill point in one of these three trees. You can mix and match, but doing so often necessitates putting skill points into passive bonuses or active skills you will never benefit from. The story is good and the combat plays out like God of War in many ways. There's an assortment of weapons to choose from, each with ups and downs. One of the best features of Kingdoms of Amalur is the ability to respec almost at will and reallocate your skill points as you desire. Have you been playing as a mage and just took a bunch of sidequests that would be a lot easier as a rogue? No problem. Just respec. In fact, the game encourages you to respec early and often. One reason for this is because there is so much content in the game that it would quickly become boring playing through as one character class. Another reason is because the three class trees are VERY limited. There are too few active skills. I never thought I'd say this about a game, but there is too much content considering how quickly it takes to max one of the class trees. The up side to this is again, your ability to retool your character at any time throughout the game. This helps what would easily be a stale experience remain fresh, but even this system has its limits. I highly recommend this game to RPG fans. There's simply a staggering amount of content here even if the quest types start to repeat. Just wait for a price drop first. Expand

Graphics- While I like the art direction used in this game (slightly cartoony similar to WoW) they have used plenty on bright colours but the attention to detail is not there as you might find in games such as The Witcher 2 and Skyrim etc.
Camera features - lacks ability to zoom in and out of character.
Controls- good basic controls but lacks ability to have key modifiers to use alt 1, alt 1 etc Combat- the best combat I have experienced so far but encounters are fairly easy. I would like to see more encounters where you are required to use several different tactics to defeat mob/boss.
Navigation- They claim to be open world but its pretty much like the Final Fantasy 10 maps. With long winding tunnels/paths. They need to implement a jump button and allow jumping up and down paths to give a feel of a true open world. They have jumped points but its not enough for me.
Monsters- When they die they die. No respawn. Which leads to an empty lifeless world. The game would benefit from respawns. While I think no game should impose grinding as an option its always nice (such as FF7).

I will say I liked everything up to the end of the first zone. After you start to get the hang of it it looks allot like fable 3. The problem with fable 3 and this game as well is the lack of a large persistent environment. Games like this and state that "the game has an open world feel" should live up to that standard instead of saying one thing and get something entirely different. The game is actually very instanced. You will have to load from you zone to another, every time you enter a house in a village(which they are what, like 3?) and have to like the invisible walls that are everywhere in game that limit your ability to freely maneuver over objects such as hills or anything that doesn't have a preset action. The large open world that was promised felt like barely one zone in any standard mmo today. The more i progressed the more I couldn't help but thinking open world isn't one tiny area connected to many many very tiny areas. The dungeons were uninspiring and everything after the desert was enough for me. As soon as i got to the desert area i knew what i got myself into... an impulse buy. My advice is not to buy this game if you are expecting an offline mmo. This is a cookie cutter action RPG wanna be with big words and little to show for it. The 50 bucks they wanted when it came out wasn't worth it and now that it's on sale on steam for half that it's not worth it. Story, characters, models, inventory, character development, levels, dungeons, crafting, graphics, music. Every single thing here belongs to MMO. God dammit, even reagents have that wowish glow on them.
This is why this game is so ultimately boring and offers absolutely nothing beyond the first few hours. Nothing will change just after you leave an introductory area and tutorial. Only numbers will go higher, and you will be stuck doing the same quest all the time in MMO dungeons (corridor - arena with enemies - corridor - boss encounter - grab loot - repeat). The world design, its story, characters are your typical MMO setting you don't give a single crap about. Every single quest is "gather X", "kill Y", "go to place Z and discover it's an ambush and fight boss". Your character development and equipment pacing go exactly along MMO pattern. The overgrown environment doesn't leave any field for speculations.
Truth to be told, Kingdoms of Amalur shows how every single post-wow MMO would look like played in single-player mode. A boring shell with no real substance to it, because the only strength of MMO games lies in the multi-player element. Kingdoms would be your typical, generic MMO that went F2P after few months since its release with a really small player-base playing it because their friends play it. They would play it not because Kingdoms were good, they would play it because they can spend their time with their friends. If not Kingdoms, it could be any other MMO title, really.
The most blistering thing is that you can literally run your way through after few main quests to the end, ignoring every single thing, to encounter the boss fight that is a poor QTE cut-scene.
I bought it for like 2€, so I can't be mad I lost my money. It's fun for a little while, until you see the obvious: it's a single player MMO. It's a good thing people behind it went bancrupt.

This is the first game in years that I have uninstalled without completing just because I couldn't bring myself to play it anymore. The combat is awful, I played a warrior with a hammer weapon to about the point when I filled the blacksmithing skill (which turned out worthless since materials for crafting are random drop apart from the extremely few and far between shops that sell only the most basic materials). The combat is ripped right out of God of War, literally, it's the exact same, right down to random meaningless sheep enemies being able to stagger and interrupt the attacks of my character, who wields a weapon larger than the enemies themselves. The combat difficulty is one of two things, way too easy, or close to impossible (enemies with unblockable, undodgable homing spells that will follow you endlessly and kill you in 1-2 hits, even if the enemy dies as they are following you).

The environments look nice, but you can't really explore them at all, there are tons of invisible walls and most dungeons are "magically locked" unless you're on a certain quest. The story is, well, I literally just stopped playing an uninstalled it less than five minutes ago and I can barely remember the point of the story. It was boring and unimaginative, and did not drag me in at all.

I've never gone from being amazed and happy about my purchase, and looking forward to a FUN game to being completely and utterly disappointed in such a short time before. I could go on and on but it isn't worth it, I couldn't care less about the future of this game at all. It has been so long since I played a game that was so boring I considered it a chore to even try to finish it I forgot what it was like.

Combat is fun, but I found the controls to be a bit odd, character randomly doesn't aim spells, doesn't attack the opponent you're moving toward. Having only one button to cast a spell makes combining abilities more of a challenge than it should be. Early combat is a gigantic click fest, and after gaining your first spells/moves it gets a teensy bit more interesting, but still an auto-targeted click fest.

The art style features an all-buff male cast. Seriously, even if you want to be an elf ranger, you're going to have a wide frame and big burly muscles. I will give the game credit for female armor, as I didn't find anything terribly revealing during my play. The modeling is definitely very last-gen, and reminds me of a slightly higher polycount Fable.

Verdict? Not anywhere near worth the launch price of $60. Skyrim was only $50 and packed with better narrative. R.A. Salvatore disappointed me greatly with this game, as I had greatly enjoyed many of his books. I pick up the game, play for ten minutes, realize I'm in a very bland and boring world, then quit. However on 38 Studios forums the actual developers said (following lots of negative feedback about the camera) that they had addressed this and in the finished game you would, amongst several fixes to the camera, be able to scroll the camera back for a better view. I don't know what the supposed fixes were, but I appear to have been lied to, as I can see no difference between the camera problems in the demo and in the half-finished game that has been released. The camera is still very dodgy and far too close most of the time in combat. Also I feel that this game is one of the classic examples of style over substance, get a big name linked to the project, do some flashy trailers prior to release, do a demo and say the bad things in the demo will be fixed at release and away you go. This game actually has nice looking combat animations but that is about all it has going for it on the PC, it has an awful console ported user interface for PC, it isn't actually an open world (that's an outright lie imho), the story is very average as are the quests, the crafting system is pointless (the items that drop all the time are far better than what you can craft and spending points on crafting means you are not spending them on combat abilities so you gimp yourself). Also, this game had the courage to say "screw realism" and ask themselves how to make a truly fun game (arrows recharge and your shield appears when you hit a button - not realistic, but boy does it work well!). The game is a bit too easy as well, I play on hard and it is not challenging. Another thing - the game stays from the depressing gray and browns that plague today's "realistic" games and created environments which are artsy and beautiful. There are certain games where you can tell the designers stayed late to create their game out of love for what they do. It is evident that the designers put a great deal of work into KOAR and it shows, they have every reason to be proud of it. Expand

I'm 40+ hours in the game, with almost a hundred quests completed and didn't found a broken quest (be aware that there are some repeatable tasks that are mistaken as broken quests.) There were some glitches with the camera though, but this is one of the most polished RPG I've ever played (almost JRPG level.) The main problem I have with this game is the main story (no pun intended.) It's really boring, but as I'm a completionist, I dedicate 95% of my gaming time to do side and faction quests, this is not a big deal for me.

    Pros:
+ Very big, almost open, world
+ Fighting system is FUN and require good reflexes along with good stats and gear
+ Varied sidequests (but some fetch quests)
+ Lots of lore and spoken dialog with a larger cast than any Elder Scrolls game
    + Bug free
    + Addictive

    Cons
    - Main story is very boring
    - Camera (specially during battles)
    - Simplified RPG system (no level on enemies p. example.)
    - Not as immersive as Skyrim

The character development is deep and fun, you can really customize yourself to suit your own playstyle. There are countless weapons and upgrades and crafting options to really dig your RPG teeth into. Finally the combat, is insanely fun and fast paced. You will be rolling, teleporting and leaping around like a ninja while you fight crazy epic monsters with a really unique design to them, this game has some of the coolest looking monsters to slaughter of any I have ever played (thanks Todd McFarlane!).

I want to be entirely clear: I got this game as a gift from a friend, and I really WANTED to like it. I went in with optimism, prepared to look on the bright side and try to see whatever my friend saw in this game that she liked. But I found absolutely nothing of any redeeming quality whatsoever; This is one of the few games where I absolutely DREADED having to play it - and after I stopped playing, I would literally have more fun sitting in my chair, doing nothing, than I had playing the game that session.

"Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" is a tiresome slog of a game. It's colours are so bright and garish that it never failed to give me a headache. Every environment was essentially a room or a hallway, with some trees and water, surrounded on all sides by blatantly artificial impassable cliff faces. Every environment was like that, a field, or a swamp, or a forest, sunken into some kind of canyon, for no goddamn reason but to railroad the player, and to make sure they can only go in the direction that the devs point them. It looks ugly and incompetent, and reeks of the worst fantasy-flavoured corridor shooters that the mid-to-late aughts could spit out.

The NPCs are bland, boring and empty, and come equipped with obnoxious, bright red exclamation points that hover over their heads to single them out as quest-givers, shattering any immersion the player could have had, and singing from the hilltops KoA:R's legacy as a failed MMORPG, repackaged as a single player game. The combat is dull and terribly easy; I was able to get through it by literally just mashing the attack button and nothing else through every random encounter - encounters, by the way, with the same three cookie-cutter enemies, repeated ad nauseam through the whole length of the game.

The story and lore and writing is patched together out of the same generic, warmed-over Tolkienisms and power fantasies that plague the rest of the fantasy genre, coupled with some pseudo-philosophical tripe about the player character being able to "choose their own destiny" and being "free from the shackles of fate." Why? Don't ask why. The game holds no answer for you; The only conceivable answer is simply because you are the player character, and the player character has to have super powers, right?

I can't stress this enough: I can see absolutely no reason why any person on this sordid Earth would ever, ever enjoy "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning." Please take my advice, that no matter what you enjoy, or what kind of person you are, and no matter how masochistic your tendencies, there is absolutely no reason to ever purchase this game. It has nothing for you. You deserve **** better.

It's not so open worlded though, there are invisible walls everywhere, and you can't even jump, zones look a lil bit narrow. But thats not a problem for me, at least they could bind to Space Bar something more useful than jumping. And you won't wander aimlessly like an idiot around vast, empty and boring locations. Combat and movement mechanics are horrid: if you're standing on a hill - your attacks go perpendicular to your character, so if an enemy is right in front of you and you're theoretically targeting them - your projectiles go right above their heads (or into the hill at their feet, if you're below them). There doesn't appear to be a way to cancel your long-charge combo attacks, so if you see a new enemy jump out from the side of the screen while in the middle of a combo - you're screwed, forced to just sit there and helplessly watch yourself getting hit. The game is completely 2D as far as the movement plane goes, there is no jumping aside from a few designated spots (with a special animation). Smallest rocks on the ground have huge collision boxes, making you walk all the way around them instead of over them, (and i'm not exaggerating - some of those rocks are maybe 3 inches tall, it is incredibly dumb that your character constantly gets stuck on them trying to walk past.).
Leveling-up mechanics (skill and ability trees) and inventory management are pretty much straight from Dragon Age (and i'm sure a bunch of other much older games, but Dragon Age is the first one that comes to mind), so nothing original or unique there. I'm not exactly criticizing re-using old techniques, but just emphasizing the fact that there isn't anything ground-breaking which would make up for all the bad things.
Graphics are at a World of Warcraft level. Considering how old WoW is, i'm sure that says a lot.
And to top it all there are game-breaking bugs that there is no way to get around, aside from reloading a much earlier save game at the beginning of a quest line and trying again (hoping the bug won't happen again). I would have even forgiven not being able to complete that particular quest and just moving on to others, but this game didn't even let me do that - i was just stuck in one place with no ability to go anywhere.
Overall - really badly made game. A 6 out of 10 *at most*. And if it wasn't for the slightly-above-mediocre art/music/writing, i wouldn't have given it more than 4 out of 10.
And i can't believe the critic score is 8, this is the first game I've played with a metascore score so far away from the score it actually deserves.

Although, when I first played the demo, it didn´t really make me want to buy the full game (Steam only - Origin sucks!), after some critics I read, I figured out, that I still had to give it a try. And I don´t regret it by far.

The charakter creation is quite sweet and the options for different builds during the game are awesome. For those (like me) who seem to fail-build all the time, there is an option (each time you level up) to reset all your points. Thanks for that!

The Story is quite interesting and some changes during the game hit me like a sledgehammer.
Most of the hundreds of side-quests have their own little story, they never felt like "been there, done that".

The Graphics look ravishing... and somehow remind me a bit of WoW. However, if WoW had those wonderful new look, I´d play in Azeroth more often ;-).
It´s comic style, you have to like it (or you do not - nothing in between).

Sound effects are descent and the music score ist truly epic. Sometimes I just sit in front of my Asus and listen to the game. At the loading screen, it almost sounds like a mixture of "Batman begins" and the "WoW-Theme". Great!

Controls are easy to learn (and not hard to master). If you let tutorial advices help you, you´ll not have any problems.

I did not finish the game yet, but my Steam says sth. about 80+ hours of play. So I might reach the finale soon. And I really am looking forward to it. Not because the game is boring, but because I really got into the story and I want to see, how it ends (if it does).

So, if you´re looking for sth. after having "finished" Skyrim, and if you like comic style, then you should really buy Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
To me it´s one of the Top 5 in 2012 even if this year hasn´t even reached the half of it.

Is there sth. negative about it? Well, to me there isn´t, yet. Maybe the ending will disappoint me, but that is yet to see....

The storyline is average at best. I do think that the game has merits and potential. Anyone wanting to be the hero of the day, will likely enjoy the game as it's extremely difficult to fail in any aspect. Fateshifting is extremely OP, it's the ultimate "Win" button and should for the games sake be changed or much more limited. Blacksmithing should be toned down a lot. AI for monsters/villains should be cranked up Alot and in combat you shouldn't be able to mash a single button and destroy everything. Graphics are fine, the basic premise of gameplay is good. There is about 55-75 hrs. of content for players. The freedom of Character development is by far the best thing about the game to me. Want a warrior/ m-u ? or any combination of rogue, magic user or warrior? KoA provides not only for the development but the gearing as well. I think many of the reviews are far to harsh and some would give you the impression that this game is equivalent to an offering by atari 2600. That is certainly not the case. The absolute biggest knock to the game is a lack of challenge for any experienced gamer. Expand
