On receiving this game I thought it was fantastic Rpg/Adventure with great Action. I was really hoping to enjoy this game, BUT!, am now discovering how actually bland and simplistic this game is - esp once your about 7hrs inn!!

I was hoping KoA:R would have varied quests and many options/decision paths/discoveries as described and mentioned by the makers before the games release!!!!.. Now with 14hrs of game play(approx); all I've been doing is bashing the attack button, slaying creatures for the many samey side-quests, or, simply fetching mostly useless item(s) that still involve slaying everything!!!. While combat seems cool and engaging at first, it's nothing more then a series one button presses and occasional block pausing. You can easily take on groups of 4-7 guys with ease!! EVEN ON HARD LEVEL!!..This does start to drag at times, as it doesn't really require anything, just attack, attack, attack!. You walk a few steps before you have to repeat the same action attacking everything in your way, but, without any real challenge, as enemies do fall fairly easily. I actually just run past them now!...After a few hours play the gameplay with KoA:R doesstart to become action repetitive, actually very repetitive!!! . This is made worse as KoA:R lacks challenge, or required skill, or even discovering enemy weak-points, that can make fighting more varied and interesting as battles come far to often. I also found one attack technique seems to beatsall (so-far!) - the many attacking options are there, but, are not , actually required.

I do find it rather stupid, for a game of this sort, that annoyingly, you are stuck to the ground!! You can't jump freely or over anything!. Because of this stupidity you are forced to walk around everything just to reach a place you can see just a few steps away, but can't, as its blocked by a small rock, fence, water, edge, lake..etc; forcing you to find a longer route. You can't even fall/step-off the edge(unless its at a very limited fixed game design place)!!!!...The world, while attractive and fairly varied, it is rather flat as you don't reach high places, no hills, no mountains, no ladders, no reaching high peaks - everything is on ground floor! This is also not a true open world game in the sense of Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout games, as you are funnelled into a one direction with many area architectural designs within the game world fairly similar - though painted with different textures !

The story isn't very engrossing at present (14hrs) and seems fairly generic so-far. Also there seems to be NO consequences to the actions you make!! I slaughtered a whole village, yet no-one cared! this destroys feeling for a living game world. There isn't much activity gong onn in the villages, and can be quiet and empty in many areas too (so-far!). Cut scenes are poor, your character just stands staring of into the distance not reacting to anything; as do other characteres!!. Lip sync is bad too! like a badly dubbed movie.

I will continue to play to the end, but it feels I'm using my thumb to bash buttons more then making deep choices, figuring out things, making moral choices that effect game direction, or searching for meaningful items/loots to help progress (everything is just thrown at you without ant real discovering!). With the streamlined and generic Rpg that is rather simplified has taken away the depth of an involving Rpg and has made it more a arcade large Hack n Slash game - without depth!!!

First of all this isn't an RPG, its Hack&Slash with light RPG elements. Game has rather bad graphics for a game that is released in 2012. Story isn't that great, once again main character with lost memory. I see all people that give 8-10 ratings on this game brag with "best combat and gameplay ever", combat is fast left clicking with mouse until everything around you is dead, if that isFirst of all this isn't an RPG, its Hack&Slash with light RPG elements. This is absurd.
Fortunately they can't offset the user score too much. I am grateful for this, thank you metacritic for your site and system.

    About the game:
Pros: Somewhat solid combat system, more than average content, stable-polished engine -> no bugs.
Cons: Generic world, bad and boring story, low level of immersion, horrible camera placement, outdated graphics, console-port feeling (GUI and controls)

The game plays and feels more like Diablo, than a traditional RPG. Some people may like this, some may not.
The main problem with the game is the disparity between graphic style vs story. The game tells us a dark and epic story , but tries to do this with a cartoon-ish, funny style. (in fable the story was in harmony with the graphic style).

The skill trees are ok, but they've been done in similar ways in countless games. The cut scenes are poor, your character just stands there staring of into the distance not reacting. There are no consequences to your actions so it doesnt feel like a living world. Bows are broken, you can't aim. All guards know when you've done something psychically which I hate. You can't jump, even over small things. it's not open, just interlinked blocks of space, the only good thing is the combat which is fun and well executed, but harder on pc than xbox. Lets hope KOAR 2 is way more polished. Oh and the weapons degrade which I don't like either! And it doesn't suck you in like a really good RPG should, waste of money. Expand

This game is like a WoW clone without the online element. The camera is absolutely abhorrent. The open-world reference in the professional reviews is a complete lie - there is no open world in this game - just small narrow instances. The story - you will get tired of it after clicking through tens of meaningless quest screens.
Overall Skyrim is like 1 billion times better then KoA and instead of buying this pathetic excuse for an RPG you might as well do yourself a favor and play Skyrim another round about.
KoA is a prime example of how RPGs should not be made.

Yes I know there has to be the handholding and stupid-easy settings to prevent ragequiting. But it seems that some newer games are removing all the difficulty from their games, even on the hardest setting. I have a theory that this is because people who see themselves as hardcore gamerz always put their games on the hardest setting; and if that setting actually is hard, then they ragequit and start badmouthing the game. That's what Bioshock: Infinite's lead dev said when he was asked why B:I's hardest setting was going to be completely hidden from users and only available to those who know how to access it through a secret button press combination.

There are 12 different kinds of basic enemies, a few mini bosses, and an unintentionally hilarious end boss fight. Which you will go through like butter. Even though I powergamed through the main quest only thereby avoiding becoming even more powerful through sidequestting, the exp and loot came so fast I never needed tactical or finesse play, and I never felt any tension or satisfaction from finishing a quest or boss fight.

I guess if you like a true button masher and gameplay that feels like you've turned on god mode, then Amalur's your game.

My perspective is someone who mainly plays MMO's, Sims and Elder Scrolls on the PC. So if you are a pc-gamer such as myself, then this review may have merit - if you hate and abhor all things PC-gaming, then feel free to ignore the rest of this. Or maybe, as others have said, you have nothing else better to play right now and so this may be good for you too. First, I will say there were a few things I liked. The story seemed okay, the graphics were cartoon-y, but not in what I feel is a bad way. The combat was fast and fluent , but you can still pause the game for pots or to change weapons, etc - just like other solo RPG's. There were quick slots at the bottom of the screen which I really liked - I hate having to hit every button to find the weapon or spell I want in Skyrim. Otherwise, I really felt like they took WoW, Rift, Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age, put them in a blender, and then just created a back story for it. It feels more linear than any Elder Scrolls game and like there is a bit of hand-holding involved - which is what I really disliked. BUT, others may be annoyed by the lack of linearity and back store in ES games. Then this game may be for you. Now, I've read in other places that if I would have just played for 5-7 hours, it becomes more open. I have a few other games I am playing right now that have kept me interested from the beginning so 5-7 hours is unacceptable. And I'm sure there will be the naysayers so let me show you a few comparisons: In KOA you wake up and don't know your history (every elder scrolls game), and then you have to fight your way out of this "dungeon" area (Oblivion) all while being shown the finer points of the game. One of the first things I found after leaving the dungeon and continuing on with the story was a stone alter. When I clicked it, I got a buff (elder scrolls). I'm not sure why so many people care so much about whether this game "beats" Skyrim or not though. It's not like Salvatore or Shilling are going to pay you for kissing their butts and neither is anyone at EA. They will just continue to take your money! If you are on the fence about this game, I would say wait a few months until it goes on sale on Steam and then pick it up.

I bought into all the stratospheric hype, the comparisons to god of war/devil may cry caliber combat, the expansive world with enormous variety and locales, the myriad of weapons and skills and talents to acquire and complement the game systems.Sadly, expectations rarely match the end product.............First off, the good-visually, the game makes a great first impression, with WoW/Torchlight-esque cartoony fantasy style characters and objects. The world is colorful, the animations are expressive and the scope of the world is huge. The inventory system is genius. The ability to 'trash' unwanted items is a godsend, and would have made Skyrim vastly improved for loot finding. After trying all three variants of combat, the mage is enjoyable to play, as a DPS role equivilent to an MMO style 'nuker' character.............And now, the shortcomings. If you thought, like myself that this combat would be as rewarding as say a Ninja Gaiden, stop... just STOP...Do not purchase this game. You will be bored silly. I have beaten Ninja Gaiden three times since its relaease, and action combat is best when fast, fluid and responsive. Amalur does not achieve this high watermark. You cannot cancel attack animation with a simple counter/block. For the first few hours, I thought it was user error, but the more I played, the more a I realized that the game is essentially turn based realtime combat. If you can deal with this, then great...but the majority of action gamers, PLEASE STEER CLEAR. Disappointment abounds........Unfortunately, this game being the size it is, carries with it a great deal of complaints. The story, the lore is a fanfic...funny sounding name here, some artifact of power here, nasty antagonist with malevolent-sounding name there. Well tread terrain with zero originality. Take every fantasy trope you can imagine and set to blend and you have amalur. Switching gears, the combat classes themselves are way out of balance. As I said, the first 5 hours with a mage are enjoyable. Respeccing to the other two, it was abundantly clear how inferior and less fun they were to play as. There is no excuse for not providing adequate crowd control in a single player class...............As I said, I wanted to enjoy this game. It simply comes up short in the combat. The designers could have provided a simple canceling fix so you could actually counter/block effectively. But nope, get ready to dodge roll A LOT. Yawn.... Expand

Maybe it's because I'm more of a fan of the classics from the PSX era like Xenogears or Final Fantasy IX, but this game is supposed to be a AAA title, and all it feels like is an RPG that tries to emulate its better cousins from the PS2 era. The graphics are deplorable for a game that is supposed to be on par with say, Final Fantasy XIII. The music is stock, it's not even that memorable. The gameplay is clunky and at times, unresponsive. Truly, this game feels like World of Warcraft stuffed into different packaging without an intriguing story, sub-par music, graphics, and gameplay elements. Lastly, I only have this to say...three skill trees. Three. This game must be so great, that it can only contain three skill trees! Note my sarcasm. Expand

The graphics are OK, the camera is sub-par , the voice acting and dialogue are dull and boring.
my biggest fault with Amalur is that, with any good rpg, you have an emotional investment in your character as they are an extension of ourselves , and in this respect KoA fails miserably. i tried (45 hours into it) till i just couldn't feign enthusiasm anymore. at no point did the game give me a reason to care about my character or the multitudes of fetch -quests that i was being sent on. all you FANBOYS out there that are waving your pitch forks around need to realize that this game did fail on delivering what it set out to. thank you to the brave few who came out with an honest review of this game while the rest of the reviews pretty much rehashed EA talking points .

It feels exactly like that - not strong enough on the single player elements. Everything was too light and made too easy to digest, as is typical of MMO's. The way the previews and yes, even some reviews, have given the impression it was a classic RPG aimed at adults, are not only misleading but downright dishonest! This is STRICTLY kiddies stuff. It would be overpriced at a fiver too so how it can justify a full price release I do not know. The graphics are very, very poor and to say they are console graphics, like many reviews have come out and said, are an insult to the latest consoles. You could maybe say that if your console is a Sega Megadrive I suppose! With the likes of Skyrim around, this should have been scrapped as soon as the publishers got a glimpse at the Skyrim gameplay footage. If you are looking for a third person action RPG in this type of mould, The Witcher does everything this tries to do in a much more adult, entertaining and deeper way. Divinity 2 is also a much better bet. To me, this game is what would be the result if Skyrim and WoW had a baby. And that baby was premature and retarded. They leave all the great things about both on the wayside.

The combat is nice at first, but it gets old fast. If this were a multiplayer game, it'd be a lot more fun. And I tend to hate multiplayer games, but AI is entirely too predictable. It doesn't hurt that there are only about a dozen different enemies. Bandits, Bears, Tuatha, Ogres, Bolg, Sprites, Brownies, Boggarts, Bog Threshes, those undead Faer things, those banshee things, and then the fishman things and their spawner. Might be another one or two things, but that's seriously it. And all of these things have predictable fighting styles. Within some of those creature types are 2-3 other soldier types, but it makes little difference in the end.

Quests are simple. "Go there, kill that." And that's pretty much it, aside from the Fed-Ex quests. The main story isn't anything special. Some of the plot-line battles are fun, but few and far apart.

Also, one of my biggest pet peeves... this game has armor sets, but it's a single player and most of them are random drops. So, you end up running around with a several incomplete sets, and no way to trade for what you're missing. Honestly, if you're on the fence... I'd wait until it's on sale on Steam for around $20. I had to force myself to finish it because I had lost all interest, but felt like I should wait until I'd finished it to actually critique it.

VERY simple and streamlined game. For first 10 or so levels it MIGHT seem like some good crpg ,but I simply realized how MUCH simplification and streamlining this game has.
No real dialogues - every character just have 2-4 things you can ask them about ,but it is not real conversation with question and answers.
Later in levels like from 15 level or so ,game changes into slasher like game.

I play on hard difficulty and while in beggining there might be some tough fights if you play "weaker" builds , then later on you just faceroll everything.

OP crafting, insane amounts of XP for quests and kills so you will find yourself very OP quickly if you do most quests in areas, money after level 10 is not an issue - I just bathe in it.

Game CLEARLY made for consoles. It just scream console !

Don't treat it like Skyrim , The Withcher 2 or older crpg's (Baldur ,Fallout) with action combat.

While in beggining it might seem like it - after level ~ 10 you will be stripped away from those "dreams".

Just slasher / action game with some very limited RPG's-ish mechanics cause that's 'trendy' now and increase potential audience.

The attempt at a story is hobbled along by one insufferable NPC dialog after another. The voice acting is downright awful and rarely in synch with character mouth movements. Thankfully the developers have enabled subtitles by default and a convenient skip button which allows the player to speed read through the babble. Side quests are chores, the main quest is nonsense, the 'open world' is full of force fields, the menu system is clunky and the much vaunted hack and slash combat is crippled by the out of control camera view. The world is barren, and feels like an empty MMO server. The storyline is incredibly bad, and you will find yourself skipping through all of it after the first few dialogues. Zones and quests don't take into account character level so you end up fighting mobs way below your level. The main ability called "Reckoning" will end boss fights in 1-2 hits, making even the hardest encounters very very easy. All in all the game just needs to be balanced. Wait till they patch it a few times before spending $60. Trust me!

Speaking of RPG, the character creation is a joke, there's presets to be chosen from, neon glowing lipstick and hair colors, and ridiculous face tattoos. I'm baffled that in an age where facial 3D morphing is implemented in character creation, we are left with 20 premade choices!

Crafting exists in this game but seems basic and too easy, not really a crafting in it's true name, just gather stuff in the world (gathering is a decent word, more likely looting) and assemble them in town. The lockpicking and dispell actions are very badly done: lockpicking is more based on your luck rather than your skill and in order to dispell you need to do it at least 10 times to get it right, badly explained and frustrating because it's time limited.

Graphics are old, somewhere around the WOW age, but improved with tons of blur to make it look filtered. Colors look fake, objects are squarish and again too much blur.

Dialogues are well made, congrats to that, the combat system is very well made, no complaints there, also I haven't noticed bugs or glitches. Quests are a bit too many and too stupid, but maybe you need them to appeal to a fantasy niche. Creatures are extremely cartoonish and child like, again the fantasy niche.

All in all I had the feel of playing a more budget-wise version of Torchlight and after getting bored through the demo I am convinced this is not for me and do not see much potential of it.

I will say I liked everything up to the end of the first zone. After you start to get the hang of it it looks allot like fable 3. The problem with fable 3 and this game as well is the lack of a large persistent environment. Games like this and state that "the game has an open world feel" should live up to that standard instead of saying one thing and get something entirely different. The game is actually very instanced. You will have to load from you zone to another, every time you enter a house in a village(which they are what, like 3?) and have to like the invisible walls that are everywhere in game that limit your ability to freely maneuver over objects such as hills or anything that doesn't have a preset action. The large open world that was promised felt like barely one zone in any standard mmo today. The more i progressed the more I couldn't help but thinking open world isn't one tiny area connected to many many very tiny areas. The dungeons were uninspiring and everything after the desert was enough for me. As soon as i got to the desert area i knew what i got myself into... an impulse buy. My advice is not to buy this game if you are expecting an offline mmo. This is a cookie cutter action RPG wanna be with big words and little to show for it. The 50 bucks they wanted when it came out wasn't worth it and now that it's on sale on steam for half that it's not worth it. Story, characters, models, inventory, character development, levels, dungeons, crafting, graphics, music. Every single thing here belongs to MMO. God dammit, even reagents have that wowish glow on them.
This is why this game is so ultimately boring and offers absolutely nothing beyond the first few hours. Nothing will change just after you leave an introductory area and tutorial. Only numbers will go higher, and you will be stuck doing the same quest all the time in MMO dungeons (corridor - arena with enemies - corridor - boss encounter - grab loot - repeat). The world design, its story, characters are your typical MMO setting you don't give a single crap about. Every single quest is "gather X", "kill Y", "go to place Z and discover it's an ambush and fight boss". Your character development and equipment pacing go exactly along MMO pattern. The overgrown environment doesn't leave any field for speculations.
Truth to be told, Kingdoms of Amalur shows how every single post-wow MMO would look like played in single-player mode. A boring shell with no real substance to it, because the only strength of MMO games lies in the multi-player element. Kingdoms would be your typical, generic MMO that went F2P after few months since its release with a really small player-base playing it because their friends play it. They would play it not because Kingdoms were good, they would play it because they can spend their time with their friends. If not Kingdoms, it could be any other MMO title, really.
The most blistering thing is that you can literally run your way through after few main quests to the end, ignoring every single thing, to encounter the boss fight that is a poor QTE cut-scene.
I bought it for like 2€, so I can't be mad I lost my money. It's fun for a little while, until you see the obvious: it's a single player MMO. It's a good thing people behind it went bancrupt.

This is the first game in years that I have uninstalled without completing just because I couldn't bring myself to play it anymore. The combat is awful, I played a warrior with a hammer weapon to about the point when I filled the blacksmithing skill (which turned out worthless since materials for crafting are random drop apart from the extremely few and far between shops that sell only the most basic materials). The combat is ripped right out of God of War, literally, it's the exact same, right down to random meaningless sheep enemies being able to stagger and interrupt the attacks of my character, who wields a weapon larger than the enemies themselves. The combat difficulty is one of two things, way too easy, or close to impossible (enemies with unblockable, undodgable homing spells that will follow you endlessly and kill you in 1-2 hits, even if the enemy dies as they are following you).

The environments look nice, but you can't really explore them at all, there are tons of invisible walls and most dungeons are "magically locked" unless you're on a certain quest. The story is, well, I literally just stopped playing an uninstalled it less than five minutes ago and I can barely remember the point of the story. It was boring and unimaginative, and did not drag me in at all.

I've never gone from being amazed and happy about my purchase, and looking forward to a FUN game to being completely and utterly disappointed in such a short time before. I could go on and on but it isn't worth it, I couldn't care less about the future of this game at all. It has been so long since I played a game that was so boring I considered it a chore to even try to finish it I forgot what it was like.

Combat is fun, but I found the controls to be a bit odd, character randomly doesn't aim spells, doesn't attack the opponent you're moving toward. Having only one button to cast a spell makes combining abilities more of a challenge than it should be. Early combat is a gigantic click fest, and after gaining your first spells/moves it gets a teensy bit more interesting, but still an auto-targeted click fest.

The art style features an all-buff male cast. Seriously, even if you want to be an elf ranger, you're going to have a wide frame and big burly muscles. I will give the game credit for female armor, as I didn't find anything terribly revealing during my play. The modeling is definitely very last-gen, and reminds me of a slightly higher polycount Fable.

Verdict? Not anywhere near worth the launch price of $60. Skyrim was only $50 and packed with better narrative. R.A. Salvatore disappointed me greatly with this game, as I had greatly enjoyed many of his books. I pick up the game, play for ten minutes, realize I'm in a very bland and boring world, then quit. However on 38 Studios forums the actual developers said (following lots of negative feedback about the camera) that they had addressed this and in the finished game you would, amongst several fixes to the camera, be able to scroll the camera back for a better view. I don't know what the supposed fixes were, but I appear to have been lied to, as I can see no difference between the camera problems in the demo and in the half-finished game that has been released. The camera is still very dodgy and far too close most of the time in combat. Also I feel that this game is one of the classic examples of style over substance, get a big name linked to the project, do some flashy trailers prior to release, do a demo and say the bad things in the demo will be fixed at release and away you go. This game actually has nice looking combat animations but that is about all it has going for it on the PC, it has an awful console ported user interface for PC, it isn't actually an open world (that's an outright lie imho), the story is very average as are the quests, the crafting system is pointless (the items that drop all the time are far better than what you can craft and spending points on crafting means you are not spending them on combat abilities so you gimp yourself). Oh and as usual, the games studio monkeys are giving it automatic 10/10 reviews which is just laughable not to mention the critic reviews should just hang their heads in shame at the unrealistically high review scores they have given it. I went in with optimism, prepared to look on the bright side and try to see whatever my friend saw in this game that she liked. But I found absolutely nothing of any redeeming quality whatsoever; This is one of the few games where I absolutely DREADED having to play it - and after I stopped playing, I would literally have more fun sitting in my chair, doing nothing, than I had playing the game that session.

"Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" is a tiresome slog of a game. It's colours are so bright and garish that it never failed to give me a headache. Every environment was essentially a room or a hallway, with some trees and water, surrounded on all sides by blatantly artificial impassable cliff faces. Every environment was like that, a field, or a swamp, or a forest, sunken into some kind of canyon, for no goddamn reason but to railroad the player, and to make sure they can only go in the direction that the devs point them. It looks ugly and incompetent, and reeks of the worst fantasy-flavoured corridor shooters that the mid-to-late aughts could spit out.

The NPCs are bland, boring and empty, and come equipped with obnoxious, bright red exclamation points that hover over their heads to single them out as quest-givers, shattering any immersion the player could have had, and singing from the hilltops KoA:R's legacy as a failed MMORPG, repackaged as a single player game. The combat is dull and terribly easy; I was able to get through it by literally just mashing the attack button and nothing else through every random encounter - encounters, by the way, with the same three cookie-cutter enemies, repeated ad nauseam through the whole length of the game.

The story and lore and writing is patched together out of the same generic, warmed-over Tolkienisms and power fantasies that plague the rest of the fantasy genre, coupled with some pseudo-philosophical tripe about the player character being able to "choose their own destiny" and being "free from the shackles of fate." Why? Don't ask why. The game holds no answer for you; The only conceivable answer is simply because you are the player character, and the player character has to have super powers, right?

I can't stress this enough: I can see absolutely no reason why any person on this sordid Earth would ever, ever enjoy "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning." Please take my advice, that no matter what you enjoy, or what kind of person you are, and no matter how masochistic your tendencies, there is absolutely no reason to ever purchase this game. Had potential, but took a serious misstep during production.
If they had made a more mature world, with a further flashed out, strategic, combat system - then 38 Studios could have had something special.
As it is - it's not worth the time investment - or the money.
3 out of ten for depth of world.

Average dialogues and quests and too many pointless things to keep track.
Horrible controls for the PC experience. Balance between classes is a joke. Combat and controls are very disappointing.
This is the kind of game where the most rewarding action is autosaving every move you make. Disgusting. I suppose you could play the game on easy to get the main story. But then again, you can

Too much severe key assignment. I think GPU usage rate is not optimized. It is regrettable although it is contents which can be enjoyed very much.

Fast and flashy combat in a shallow fantasy world. For the solo MMO player only. [Apr 2012, p.62]

For all the things that don't work well, the exciting combat and deep world make KAR a very worthy game to play. It's a shame Electronic Arts is doing such a poor job of promoting it, as there is enough here to make the foundation of a very solid franchise.

Great combat and mountains of loot can't compensate for Amalur's generic world design and familiar story. [May 2012, p.72]
