Jagged Alliance has been out of luck for a long time thanks to games released after the sequel to the original game. Jagged Alliance 2 is the pinnacle of the series. It seemed that the series was dead, and nothing good would come of it. But a miracle happened, and we finally got a real Jagged Alliance 3, which may not reach the level of JA2, but it's still a good game.

Best of all I didn't know this game was coming, and is so far the best surprise of 2023. If you like tactics games, over the top humor and are not easily offended, this game is a MUST PLAY. Only reason I don't give it a 10 is I believe nothing is perfect.

Jagged Alliance 3 does a great job of bringing a classic franchise to a modern audience. While managing to hold on to the depth of gameplay the franchise is known for, it still does a great job of introducing new players to its many systems and nuances, and the over-the-top writing is difficult to not enjoy. The RPG and management aspects work quite well with the minute-to-minute combat gameplay to make Jagged Alliance 3 an incredibly unique title, with maybe BattleTech and Phantom Brigade being the only other similar options.

If playing a turn-based take on classic action movies, complete with the silliness in terms of writing and characters that the genre is known for appeals to you, Jagged Alliance 3 is definitely something you want to check out.

Overall, I'm very happy with the game. It's impossible to get away from it. Very deep immersion. Humor that many criticize - I like it. As a big fan of the JA2 - lacks a "Bobby Ray's Guns and Things". But I think it will be fixed by mods or patch.

Pleased modders who every day improve aspects of gameplay.

What is still lacking for complete happiness:
    1) Correctly working tactical pause. So that it could give orders to several mercs the same time.
    2) Bobby Ray's online weapons store.
    3) A more understandable "tired" system )

Played the series since JA1 and JA2 was a firm favourite of mine. This is a worthy successor and been great fun to play. The voice acting in ja2 may be a bit better and the grittier feeling isn't quite there in favour if more comedy but it's not necessarily a bad thing. It took 24 years, but someone finally made a good Jagged Alliance sequel.

THQ took the safe - and sane - approach and did not try to change, what worked. As always, you are getting your AIM mercs together, to boot some evil guy from a made-up country in the name of it's rightful ruler. You take cities, mines, and enhance your mercs - this time more directly, than before, as you will hit level-ups, and can choose from a set of skills, based on the corresponding attributes of your merc.
Big change in gameplay: this is closer to Wastelands 2 and 3, than JA2 - there are so many sidequests, and optional missions, where you have to gather or find stuff, and deliver them to certain characters, you can drown in them if you want. Attributes and perks guide everything, and most quests are tide to one of them: sometimes you need wisdom, or medical skills, to finish a quest. If you don't meet the required level, you will not be able to get the reward.
The majority of the old mercs are back - from AIM, anyway, and those, who were cut, like Buzz, or Rothman, are replaced with new guys - or some returning, old ones, like Mouse. All established relationships remain as always, so Raven and Raider are still an item, Fox is still dating... everyone, but mostly Wolf and so on. This is where the game shines: the banter is back, and it works. It was good, hearing Grizzly and Shadow, or Igor and Grunty talk. They are funny, charming and they do deliver, what was missing from all other attempts of a sequel.
Even the voiceovers are very decent! Sometimes, I could swear, they got the original actress or actor back. Great work!
The legendary 1.13 arsenal, however, is gone. This is much closer to JA2 vanilla levels - without the 'tons-o-guns' options! That was a shame, but I learned to live with it.
The game is now full 3d, rotatable, and all the rest. It looked good enough, but it does not push the envelope, that is for sure. Does it have to? I don't think so - if it delivers on the gameplay, I am happy.
    So did it?
    Yeah. Mostly, it did.
Enemies are challenging, but I got a bit tired at the end, of all the same encounters. Some enemies are overpowered, some levels are pushing it. If you remember 1.13 siege of Meduna, with those neverending 60+ elite guards battles, well, brace yourself. I had some issues with how unforgiving the skill-check system is: you can manage the game with a medic, who has 72 points in her attribute - but if a skill check requires 75+, you will never meet that level. You will have to hire an expert just for that specific task. That results in the in-between guys having less value, than the high-end specialists. Why bother with Wolf, and his 67 points in medicine and mechanics, if he will never be able to disarm a mine, that need 70+, or heal someone, who needs 85+, to pass? I also got tired with some of the fetch-quests, like finding 12 chairs, of going to 5 different locations, to collect virus samples, erecting effigies 9 times in the jungle. Those were more bother, than what they worth, but they were all optionals, thank God.

That being said: I had a fun time with the game.

It's not perfect, but it is still good.

It's simplified Jagged Alliance 1 and 2. Mercs never get tired, don't require any rest, don't have energy. A whole team of stealth assassins with knifes can easily wipe out whole maps. I played this, got tired of boredom, quit, launched Jagged Alliance 2 and have much more fun until now. It's not worth the money. For free it's ok as long as you don't have anything else to do.

I do see a lot of people is referencing this game to X-com. There is only a small element of X-com in this game. example triggering the enemy group and giving them the time to move into cover while not being able to react.

But what X-com gave is every character somehow felt similar and is differentiate by class.

In JA3, it has that individual character that is more unique and having a positive and negative traits. Want to train full crew of snipers, of cause you can. See the need to swap in a weapon to have assault rifle. Sure by all mean. Or just want to go upclose and personal, the system wont penalise you for that matter. It all depend on the character stats.

A few common points of criticism towards the game and my thoughts on why I DISAGREE WITH THOSE:

A few common points of criticism towards the game and my thoughts on why I DISAGREE WITH THOSE:
    • No active pause – I think that being able to set up perfect ambushes with your whole squad by executing a number of orders in perfect sync would ruin the experience for me. You can still set up brilliant ambushes by, say, planting a timed explosive and putting most of your squad in overwatch before the turn-based combat starts so that the enemy still suffers a lot of damage in the repositioning phase.
    • No chance to hit displayed – while the option has already been provided with an official mod, I seriously don’t get it what so many people are complaining about. You are explicitly shown tons of information about what could affect your chances to hit positively or negatively, sometimes up to 9-10 such data points in my experience. If that were not enough, you actually get a visual indication of whether your attempt is in the sweet spot based on all those factors combined with range.
    • Quirky controls – I’ve found it way more easier to go to a different floor as compared with XCOM2. Controls are fairly intuitive and responsive from my point of view, especially appreciating the fact that so much is going on that I can’t really blame the game for not always being fully clear as to what exactly I’m trying to do.
    • Enemy knowing where you are – I’ve noticed some reviewers have claimed that the AI knew more than it should. While I appreciate the fact they may have had such experience, I haven’t. I’ve had a number of situations where I’m openly attacking the enemy with part of the squad while some other mercs stay hidden to attack from the flank. It seemed that the AI was only aware of my openly attacking mercs and wasn’t anticipating the hidden mercs that were sometimes literally in front of its way. If they’d been able to do a 1-hit kill with a suppressed sniper, they’d remain hidden and the AI would definitely still be unaware of where they were.
    • Ragdoll physics can be subpar; what your merc wears doesn’t change their looks – both statements are correct and I seriously couldn’t care less. I’m here for the gameplay which is brilliant – if that’s at the expense of some more eye candy, then so be it.

What I particularly liked about the game:
    • Good and challenging AI even at the lowest difficulty
    • I did explore every single tile on the map and I still see a great replayability potential. It’s very much non-linear indeed and you can progress with even some of the major milestones in a campaign by approaching them in a different order. Your decisions do indeed matter in the long term and I bet I could see a lot more from the game even in a third or fourth replay – the point is that it’s not only alternative choices (where I could just explore 100% of those alternatives in a second playthrough) but rather your choices cumulatively also lead to very different outcomes. Side quests are brilliant and very immersive.
    • The game came out extremely polished and with more than enough content for it to be called a worthy day one release. That used to be the standard twenty years ago but not really the case anymore so it’s very much worth praising the developers and the publishers for that. I’ve played for more than 60 hours so far and I haven’t had a single crash or any major bug spoiling my experience. The game is also full of so much content that it’s most certainly a fully completed launch – unlike many other moder releases that are launched but only become playable after months and potentially even some paid DLCs.
    • Love the projectile ballistics!

What could’ve made the game even better:
    • Lacking tutorials – as a newcomer to the game and the series (but definitely not to the genre), I gave up on my first playthrough after about 10 hours because I’d made some fundamental strategy mistakes. I then spent about an hour of watching videos on YouTube with titles like “5 major mistakes to avoid when playing JA3”, etc. After that I had tons of fun with my full 50-hours completionist playthrough. Nevertheless, a proper engaging in-game tutorial would’ve been appreciated. I did my best to try to read all of the text just-in-time tips but felt overwhelmed with the walls of text at some point.
    • I mentioned already that I love the projectile ballistics but as much as I was hyped about the destructible terrain, I must say Silent Storm still remains unmatched in that respect. Yes, many objects and parts of the terrain are indeed destructible but I couldn’t help but think all the time how Silent Storm was far superior in that respect. Don’t get me wrong – destruction is good, I’m happy it’s there in the first place, it’s just simply not as absolutely brilliant and fun as it was in Silent Storm.

Despite the two points above, I had so much fun that I realise it's greater than the sum of its parts, hence 10/10.

Although this is the best JA since the second part, the game has gone too far from the original series, having lost the specific black humor, lore and characters history and having too casual mechanics. This is not the JA that I replayed three times and which is rightfully considered one of the most realistic and well-developed military-tactical RPGs in the history of games.

    - no minimap

Love how every single mercenary has his own strong personality, voice acting, unique in game lines and in game model (i like decision that you don't see donned armor, because you will just have same looking 6 grey figures on map in that case). Characters have hilarious reactions, every single NPC has great written personality and voice acting. Every NPC is unique and by far from tedious. Humor is raw, challenging every "be correct" topic of this decade but is not offensive and I love it.

Only thing from giving it 10 out of 10 is combat and some in game balance. Some weapon types and game mechanics (mercenary training) are totally OP, others are practically useless compared to their counterparts. First 1/3 to half of the game is fun challenge, but after that you became so powerful, that even on highest difficulty you just wipe floor with everyone, hardly taking any damage. Unfortunately, AI of enemies is quite weak to be frank.

But the dialogue feels so heavy-handed in its exposition and so superficial in the game's non-linear construction that one hardly wants to engage with it any longer than necessary. [Issue#329]

Like some of these mercs, Jagged Alliance 3 can be a bit rough around the edges, but when the chips are down there’s no question it delivers. This is an easy recommendation for players who enjoy the genre, especially since it’s been 24 years since the last mainline entry in the series. With addictive gameplay, a great cast of characters, and tongue-in-cheek dialogue, liberating this island is a mission worth accepting.

Jagged Alliance 3 is a wise pick in the tactical game genre, despite some balancing issues. The game delivers fun from start to finish, serving as a genuine tribute to the action cinema of the '80s and '90s. You almost expect to see Stallone and Schwarzenegger pop up at the start of each mission. It's entertaining, aesthetically polished, and above all, it's exhilarating.
