Hotline Miami is a kinetic and addictive fever dream of a haunting narrative and pulse pounding gameplay.

Hotline Miami is only held back by several progression oversights (the survive one bullet mask being found after survive two bullets mask) and consistent bugs (dog behavior/inconsistent doors/enemies running out of the map). However these are minor nitpicks. I highly recommend

The soundtracks are fast and bassy, they fit the vibe so well.

The game looks stunning, the menu gives a really empty feeling like if nothing really matters. It makes me feel like the main protagonist, Jacket is a nihilist in some way. He also has a really iconic sociopath personality

The gameplay is fast paced and quite brutal but it requires you to be strategic or you'll quickly become overwhelmed. You can't zerg through this game, (nearly) everything kills you in a single hit. It isn't a very long game but what it offers is top notch (aside from that damn stealth level).

Even though It will remain tricky and unforgiving (and therefore challenging and engaging) due to the way the aiming system works, you will gradually become able to pull off bold and risky moves, and you'll be rewarded for it with a sense of achievement. It's the ultimate reward a game can give you, it's something various systems out there try to replicate in a somewhat callous way with badges made of pixels, and it is something that comes naturally to this particular game.

The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic as well. I really don't know anything about music so I'll shut up (after saying just this): I think that not only it is good in its own right, but that it also perfectly fits and maybe even extends the most excellent experience that is Hotline Miami. I knocked a point because I'm left-handed: The use of the shift key is a big no-no of awkwardness for me, and there currently is no way around this. A patch is on the way, but I really think it should have been in the release.

In the end, if you're a gaming rat that gets into nerd rage fits at the sight of anything that is not the formatted Skinner box he has been taught to like, don't buy this.

On the other hand, if you are more of an open-minded type of gaming rat, this little gem of a game will reward you amply for your time and your attention.

I think this game is a very interesting mix of modern and retro. You have this pumping modern soundtrack with 80's visual design and modern gameplay. It's hard like old games, but not unfair like old, bad games. It's easy to pick up and each floor is like a checkpoint.

Hotline Miami is much more than what it appears to be. At first, it may seem a random 2D shooter game and that's it.

The environment of the 80's Miami is very beautiful and colorful and fits well with that era. And expect to see blood everywhere, yours and your enemies'.
The music is incredible and also reflects well the atmosphere of the time besides the climate of the situations you face.

But the great jewel of the game is it's the gameplay.
You can kill your enemies in countless different ways and with different types of weapons.
In addition, you gain masks that give you special abilities that can be used to strengthen their playing style.
The response of the controls is very fast, like the action, half a second of hesitation and you're dead.
The game is not easy, and you will probably have to repeat some the missions several times, but it recognizes that, therefore the respawn is imediate.

For it's tipification, the game would have everything to be a frustrating experience, but quite on the contrary by all the factors cited here Hotline Miami becomes a very relaxing experience.

It is a top down shooter controlled by the keyboard for movement and the mouse for aiming. I can understand how the controls may give some people a hrd time, but I felt them clicking within about an hour of play. In my experience so far, it is incredibly easy to control, and I now find myself flying through levels at speeds that would have terrified me when I first started playing. The game is fast, brutal, and completely unforgiving. I have heard it compared to Trials HD on XBL, and that comparison is completely warranted. They are fundamentally different games, but they have that same rapid-fail, rapid-restart system that encourages experimentation and switching up yourstrategies to try to find the most painless, combo-streaking way to tear through the army of enemies littering the level. The use of violence, especially given the old-school graphics, is surprisingly over-the-top and visceral, and even manages to be unsettling to a certain degree, especially when, at the end of each level, you have to march back out to your car through a sea of mutilated bodies and blood covering the building. I have beaten the game through 3 times at this point, and I can't wait to get off of work to go back and blast my way through it again. It's simple, it's challenging, it's very unique (I can't think of any game to compare the actual minute-to-minute gameplay to) and I LOVE IT. It may not be for absolutely everyone, but it has won me over in a big way. If you're the kind of gamer who likes a challenge, and is up for mastering a new type of game you may not have extensive experience with already, this game is for you, and it's badass. My only real complaint in this flood of praise is that the game is kind of short, and with the simplicity of the basic mechanics, i'm a little disappointed that they couldn't throw in a few more level than what is there. But for 10 bucks, I definitely found it to be worth my money. Expand

At first I thought there was no real story to the game, but as I pressed harder, I got a hold of what the developers were trying to achieve and jumped down the bunny hole in no time flat. I don't want to spoil anything for you, so I'll let you figure out what's going on. I can tell you one thing: once you finish a chapter, the music cuts out as you're forced to walk back to your car through hordes of dead bodies. You really start to ponder your character's motives and his reasons for answering all of these random calls, even after he throws up out of sheer disgust at what he did during the first chapter. By far the most interesting aspect of the game though is the gameplay. You have to use everything you can find to your advantage, especially since both you and your enemies have a one-hit kill lifespan. The stealth isn't great, but you do have to time your moves and predict when enemies will rush out (and I mean RUSH OUT) or shoot you. Like you can do to your enemies, your enemies can kill you in the blink of an eye. You. Will. Die. Countless. Times. You can take out other baddies with guns at ease, but since guns are so loud, they attract the attention of people surrounding you. You'd want to use melee weapons as much as you can, but only they can get you so far. Enough of me rambling, here's my bottom line: If retro fast-paced action strategy games with a compelling and fantastically thought-out plot and narration suit you, then this game comes highly recommended.

It's a slick game, wonderful controls, fast-paced and really a rewarding experience when you beat a difficult level or stage. I am usually not into these types of face-paced trial-and-error arcade games, but this is the exception for me. At times it plays like a puzzle game (timing and approach is key, and can make or break a good run), other times it feels like Grand Theft Auto, running and gunning and spewing carnage.

The story is a mix of Kafka, Refn, and Kubrick and really appeals to me. It's not everybody's favourite flavour, but if you even think this kind of surrealist hyper-violence would appeal, then it absolutely will. Not to mention the glorious soundtrack that just reinforces every design decision in the game.

This game has made me take serious notice of the developers, Dennaton Games. I will absolutely buy the sequel/DLC to Hotline Miami, I will likely purchase their previous works, and will be paying close attention to their future endeavours. The only reason it gets 9/10 and not 10/10 is... I need to leave them SOME room to impress me more!

    Don't Miss this game!

As well as being an incredibly exciting game which very smoothly brings puzzle elements into the top-down combat model it adopts, this is an arty and fascinating exploration of the psychopath. Don't let anyone tell you it's wrong to enjoy this game, it's intelligently designed and I had a great time.

Okay, the game is just AMAZING. 10/10. BUT you should be aware that there are problems with steam achievements right now, sometimes AI seems really stupid and there is no in-game support of steam overlay. Devs are working on these issues. Other than that, awesome game.

It is both a mix of frustration, as well as fun. The soundtrack is the main reason that I got into this game, with its 80s like mix of techno is amazing. The story is awesome, with its brutal history and its dark and depressing tone. The point system and masks are unique, and it almost seems like Smash TV, but a much more enjoyable and deep experience than Smash TV could be.

The gameplay is seen from above, and the game consists of 15 chapters, or levels, wich mostly concludes several maps.

If you get a good score in a chapter, you will unlock new masks, with special abilities, and you'll also unlock weapons, wich can be found later on.

The game also has a story, a twisted one, but I am not gonna spoil anything, play it for yourselves.

The graphics of the game is pixelated, wich I think is fine personally; the game would've been badder if it was 'realistic' graphics in my opinion.

The soundtrack is good, and fitting for the most situations. It's mostly electronic music.

There is a few minor bugs here and there, like enemies going through walls, wich only happend once.

Other than that, I can't say much more about the game; it's good, heart pumping, and difficult. I like that kind of games.

Conclusion: While gameplay is repetitive it never really feels repetitive. The challenge always keeps it interesting even though you're basically doing the same thing (killing everybody in the room) every level. If you enjoy older style of games like asteroid, pacman, and space invaders where it's the same thing every level but just on a different map or with slight tweaks then you'll love this. For some reason it reminds me of the movie "Drive" with Ryan Gosling.

Hotline gives you a different game-play style. I wish there was a CO-OP mode also, but it is still perfect game in Singleplayer. You can not compare Hotline Miami with any other game. It is unique in these days i think. It brings some good memories from "old days". And you never get bored, but sometimes, you just feel that, missions repeat themselves. Still a good game.

About the repetitiveness if you measure it by the fact that you're doing the same thing than yeah 90% of the games are repetitive. Enemies doesnt always spawn the same way, sometimes they open doors and check other areas sometime they dont.

The graphics are as they are, like 90s games were, you can clearly tell that by the screenshots so you're aware of what you're buying. You might like it or not, its relative thing. If you played better 'flash games' list them I'm curious about that.

Sorry, but had to start with that. Yes, you're not buying a graphical pushing game, there are plenty of flash games with 'better' graphics, but this was the style they wanted and it fits the music and whole theme...It won't win awards, but as has been said

It can be tough, but I guarantee 75% of the deaths you suffer will be your fault...and you'll learn from them. You'll plan your run, then panic lob a shotgun at someone and sprint round a corner into a dog or forget the glass for the 100th time. You could probably complete all the levels in an afternoon but if you can pick it up for around $5 that's cheaper then a lot of evenings entertainment. And you will be entertained.

It's a good game, and the 'plot' that is there and unfolds is just enough and just little enough to make you question things...you'll WANT to play more, to finish that level to see the next one....and the soundtrack to it is perfectly matched.

Only a few gripes it's a little short, and to some extent limited replay value. I doubt I'd replay it for a while but I can see myself coming back in a year or 2. Some of the boss fights are just a little annoying, the biker has been mentioned by others, but really you'll get it in the end just the dialog every-time was needless

I'd say it's more 8.5 but having to go one way or the other on the simple fact that it's a fun solid cheap game with a well played story and a great soundtrack it more then deserves the 9

The controls, gameplay and frame rate are incredibly fluid, lending you total control and further enhancing the furiously fast action. You play from a bird's eye angle so you always have an idea of what's going on and how to quickly deal with any problems, yet also allows you to witness the full glory of your rampage.

There's a great scoring system in place too which encourages players to be creative in their bloody massacres, and there's plenty of A+ grades, weapons and unique, ability-boosting masks to go after.

The game oozes style, with a truly phenomenal soundtrack (if you don't get this game, listen to the soundtrack alone!), and it perfectly captures that idiosyncratic atmosphere of 80s Miami, drenched in neon and blood. It certainly doesn't hold back, either; you'll be regularly blowing limbs off with shotguns, bashing skulls to a pulp with baseball bats and iron bars, hacking people to bits with machetes, and a lot worse, so make sure you have a strong stomach.

The only real flaw I can mention is the very out-of-place stealth section; it greatly damages the momentum and is poorly designed.

Otherwise, the game is superb, totally worth its price, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who loves their action.

It fits perfectly with the gameplay. It takes very general elements from older music in games like pokemon, megaman, metroid.. etc.. but with a modern twist. It does this well, the pairing of the music with the visuals and gameplay create a truly immersive environment. There is variety within the areas you travel in-game to the point where you actually hear it. It is catchy as hell, loops, and best of all, it doesn't get annoying.

    Gameplay:
Very good mechanics and responsive gameplay make controlling the player avatar efficient. It can be fast or slow paced depending on your style which makes this a deeper game than I originally thought. It is strategy meets reflexes and stealth. Do you like sneak around with melee weapons to avoid alarms as in splinter cell? Do you like the badass loose cannon that gets **** done by rushing in guns blazing? This game can satisfy your need for planning what you will do next as well as the need to shoot everything. However, the in-between in lacking. By that, I mean you will always do one or the other. You may plan as much as you want, but the rooms will always loop. The enemies in the rooms have a plan to follow [code]. They will patrol what they are programmed to patrol until you give them reason to attack you. This is fine, but feels as if the situations become very similar. Weapon choice is also limited with either a selection of [ranged] guns or [melee] weapons. You may also perform executions which, while a nice touch and nice way to make sure you got the kill, does not add or subtract from the overall gameplay. There are also [stat/effect] modifiers in the form of various masks your character may use while playing through the story, such as the ability to add lethality to opening a door, or increased walking speed.

    Overall: 8.7
Hell of a good game. Difficult enough to keep you interested and playing with good tunes to listen to. You will be mad after a getting killed a few times, but you have to realize that is part of the game. Error is met with a restart of your last checkpoint, so it is somewhat forgiving. Great Indie game, would recommend.

The visuals are designed to re-create the nostalgic retro design of the 1980s, but to call them a "re-creation" does it no justice. The pixel art is detailed, yet simple, and has an unmissable style. The music is inspired by the psychedelic vibes, of the 80s, an has a ominous feel to it. It goes from dubstep to reggae. Many people forget to mention the sound effects, which aren't so good. They are generally repetition of the same sound repeat, until you get to the guns, where the bullet sounds so realistic it makes me feel like Im right there.

The game's gameplay is harsh and unforgiving, but can be learned quickly. There are no fancy game mechanics, that make it unique, besides the hyper-realistic difficulty. I think that themes in the story like the characters morale were not explored enough, to make my actions feel like they have any cause, or consequence, but the devs could argue, thats the point.

This is by far my fave game. I feel that a sequel is much needed. Congratulation to Dennaton.

Hotline Miami's design, aside from a couple hiccups with boss enemies, is damn near flawless. The pacing makes it difficult to put down even when you're mad as hell about your repeated stupid deaths.

Storyline is damn near opaque, but the general theme of the game is conveyed seamlessly through the playable segments and give a LOT of characterization with only a couple paragraphs of dialogue total. When talking mechanics-as-narrative, Hotline Miami is my #1 example.

It's not quite a perfect 10. Enemy AI can be unpredictable in a way that spoils the fun on occasion, and a couple encounters change up the rules (boss is immune to melee, boss can survive more than one hit...) in an infuriating way, but it's still not enough to come close to ruining the experience.

I'd recommend this game to anyone with a strong stomach.

One of the best indie games ever made.
    - Great Sound track
    - Great theme
    - interesting enough plot/premise
    - fun fast paced gameplay.
    - challenging yet offers multiple ways to clear levels

    cons
    - some really bad twitch boss designs
    - secret ending leaves a lot to be desired.

    PURE GAME ART

don't get buyblocked by the **** graphics, this Scandinavian basement dweller diamond will be without a doubt known as one of the most memorable games of the 201X decade not only for the soundtrack but also for the whole grotesque brutal feeling that the game will leave you with

it's absolutely unique and one of those games you think about even a long time after beating it

Full of bloody action, psychedelia, pulsating music and twisted plot. I got through it 2 times, on ps3 couple years ago and on pc, recently. I don't regret any of it. it was still fresh and as good as I remembered. Almost highest note for style and originality.(I was killed because of bugged door a bit too much).

The game only falls short in two regards. The level design is usually great, but some levels just feel like they weren't tested enough or were thrown in because the designer liked the level, not necessarily because it was good for the game. It also has a **** stealth part that really really slows down the fast pace of the game and loses the immersion in the game completely. The game is just fast pace, fast pace, fast pace then you just hit this brick wall of a stealth level that does not fit in at all.

All in all great game though, if you haven't played it pick it up at the next winter/summer sale and give it a try. It's short, but almost every minute is great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a game alright but it's also an experience in the life of a character who puts on masks and slaughters mafia members and cops. Why an experience???, Because this character that you play as feels sick from his murders, starts hallucinating about crazy **** and gets all fked up near the end. It has a fantastic soundtrack that sounds amazing and matches with the situations that you are in. It's very challenging and can be frustrating at times, but is extremely fun too. It is rather short, but you can replay it and get better scores on all the levels. Expand

Really hoping this game gets a larger audience because I think that people are just judging it after looking at it and thinking "eh looks boring". Because I admit I was guilty of that, then a year and a half later I buy it because its on sale on the PlayStation store and regret my previous judgement after just looking at screenshots and assuming it was a boring simple indie game. Just give it a shot before you give it up. Expand

The music originally striking me as the games only weak point, where games such as Party Hard having nailed the sound part of the game, Hotline Miami simply felt slightly tone deaf by comparison. Though throughout my time with the game the simple, drum heavy, electronic tracks grew on me. In the end being one of the defining parts of our main character, adding to the feeling of the game. It fits the games tone perfectly.

The gameplay being one of the most challanging ever, though at no point did it feel truly unfair, just unforgiving. Any mistake can, and will, lead to death. Be prepared to spend up to hours trying to clear the same level.
The games artstyle being simplistic, works well. It's not the sort of game where you would want a lot of detail things going on all over the place. It works perfectly and is done with enough colour and style for anyone to enjoy.

A brilliant Indie game, at this point i haven't played Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, but if it lives up to the original in any way, i'm in for one hell of a ride. Recommended in a heartbeat, especially at the price it can be found at on Steam during any sale.

Hotline Miami is amazing, and is my favorite indie game on the PS4. It is very difficult, and you will die a lot, but it rarely felt unfair. And finally, the soundtrack: outstanding. Truly captures the vibe of late-80s partying in Miami.

Hotline Miami is an absolute most for fans of rogue shooters, or action games in general.

On the contrary, the fast and addictive gameplay will make you repeat the same levels over and over and you will feel a good sense of accomplishment when you manage to complete a level. Sound design is superb.

I was told by many friends that I should try this. The screenshots hadn’t drawn me in and with regards to being way too late to jump into Hotline Miami bandwagon, I plead guilty. Hotline Miami is psychedelic, violent and often sick. Once you get the hang of it, you won’t put it down. Choose your favorite mask and enjoy playing the psycho killer.

PS: Keep moving when you shoot.

It's a very addictive, fun and well made game. I highly recommend it to any hardcore gamer. This is not for casuals, in most situations it is a one hit kill for both you and your enemies. I completed the story in under 6 hours, being an average player. It also has great replay value, due to different masks you obtain throughout the game(which give you different skills/weapons).

Hotline Miami is far more that what I had imagined when I first saw its screenshots for the first time. "How come my friends are recommending so insistently this 8/16 bits game ?". And here I am, after completing the two episodes, thinking they're definitely both among the best games I've played. Just that.

Three elements make Hotline Miami great:

    1) its gameplay. Although seemingly simple, the gameplay is surprisingly nervous, fast-paced and enjoyable. Seeing the enemies behind the walls allows to plan your actions, but after the first bullet is shot, the adrenaline kicks-in and your reflexes and speed of action have to do the rest. Gory, nervous, just like Jacket really is.

    2) its atmosphere. How can a seemingly retro game make a player feel nervous, crazy, repulsed by the craziness, or enjoy violence ? Yet with cynical details on the characters' faces, sequences of Jacket talking to his masks, or aggressive dialogues, the atmosphere is set and felt intensely. And this aspect is even pushed much further in the second episode.

    3) its scenario. Yes, this game looks like shooting everywhere, but once you reached the end of the game you come to realise many things and that there is a real, well-thought story behind all this. And there again, it's the tip of the iceberg until you play the second episode.

Add to this divine soundtracks, and you get a true masterpiece. Absolute must-have.

From the get-go, Miami’s presentation has a unique style, with vivid colors, generous amounts of post-process filtering and a stunning soundtrack (you will just let the game play on, only to hear the tracks). But at the same time, all notions of continuous fast-paced action gameplay disappear. Hotline Miami is essentially a top-down stealth game, that rewards the player with imaginative (and quite violent) kill animations. [January 2013]
