Sep 16, 2024Hollowbody is a testament to the work of Hamley, and is phenomenal within its own right, but the dedication to various cult classic horror and sci-fi games only adds to how enamored I was with the game; this is how you make a game heavily inspired by other media while making a whole new experience entirely, in a nutshell. But don’t get me wrong, Hollowbody is so much more than its inspirations, made up of multiple moving parts that provide fans of the survival horror genre with something new and refreshing.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollowbody is the best horror game of the year, standing out with its remarkably good use of tension and incredible atmosphere. Clocking in at about three hours, your short time with this game will surely be memorable, tense, and terrifying.
-
Oct 15, 2024Hollowbody is more than just a nod to classic horror; it combines storytelling, atmosphere, and gameplay in a way that appeals to both newcomers and long-time fans. If you’re looking for a gripping horror experience that keeps you on your toes, this is a game you shouldn’t miss.
-
Sep 30, 2024Hollowbody does a great job of capturing the mood and feel of survival horror classics whilst removing some of the genre’s more annoying aspects and sits at the very top of the indie horror tree alongside the likes of Crow Country and Signalis.
-
Sep 13, 2024As a complete work, Hollowbody elevates video game horror by making players afraid of its world in a way that’s far more effective than many others, and its creepy atmosphere and oppressive gloom made me feel tense at all times. It’s a scary-as-hell love letter to fans of the genre, and I can only hope that horror devs out there take some inspiration from Nathan Hamley’s frightening work.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollowbody is a strong horror game that perfectly captures the nostalgic atmosphere and play style of old Silent Hill games. The stark artstyle, compelling sound design and emotional story make this a must-play for horror fans.
-
Oct 7, 2024Hollowbody is a wonderful throwback to the golden age of survival horror games in the sixth console generation with an interesting and engaging story and excellent sound design.
-
Sep 16, 2024Hollowbody is a love letter to the survival horror genre of the early 2000s. It’s not without its flaws, particularly in combat variety and puzzle depth, but its strengths far outweigh its shortcomings. For fans of classic survival horror, it offers a beautifully atmospheric, tension-filled experience that feels both nostalgic and new. It becomes a game that you want to see through, if only to witness how far this rabbit hole goes. I’m looking forward to seeing more from this developer in the future.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollobody is a tribute to the survival horror era with ideas from PS1 and PS2, but with a slight twist and its own setting and aesthetics that results in a tremendously interesting experience, even if it is not always consistent in its approach.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollowbody handles the core staples of a great survival horror experience with ease. Suffocating atmosphere, tense ammo management and punishing enemies make for a thrilling if unsettling experience. While it lacks depth in enemy variety and its engrossing stories feel slightly too brief, this a psychological thriller that’ll have you running for your life, yet coming back for more. Silent Hill 2 remake’s foggy town looms on the horizon, but Hollowbody’s tech-noir Exclusion Zone may be more competition than it bargained for.
-
Sep 12, 2024Inspired by Silent Hill, Hollowbody will feel familiar to anyone that has played an entry in Konami's celebrated horror series. In any case, this is a seriously unsettling survival horror game with some fun puzzles, and its unique setting makes it feel somewhat fresh.
-
Oct 28, 2024Hollowbody is a love letter to early turn-of-the-century horror. It’s not the most elegant at dealing with the pieces; some of the puzzles vary wildly in difficulty, enemies are fairly generic and the game is pretty short but you know what? I think, for the fact that this is a solo developer and it’s not highly priced it’s still a solid recommend from me. Even if you’re wanting to wade into the muck of survival horror, this makes a great entry into the genre.
-
Oct 11, 2024Hollowbody is an impressive horror game that reminded me of what I loved and hated about the iconic games of the past. It combines elements of the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series. It is not very extensive, but the story is retold in an interesting way.
-
Oct 9, 2024The gameplay is hindered by basic mechanics and somewhat awkward melee combat, which detracts from the overall enjoyment. However, the game excels in creating a compelling atmosphere, and the gameplay maintains a smooth flow. In the end, Hollowbody provides a nostalgic experience for fans of British survival horror at the price of a large takeaway pizza (£14.20), encapsulating both the triumphs and shortcomings of the genre, making it a worthwhile choice for an engaging evening for fans of horror games that like them with a sprinkle of nostalgia.
-
Sep 28, 2024At a glance, it’s clear that Silent Hill and Resident Evil were major influences on indie horror game Hollowbody. While its retro PS2-style visuals are what initially drew me toward the game, inside of that is a competent survival horror experience that, while not doing too many things different from its predecessors, establishes a world and setting that’s worth exploring. If you’re looking for a game to scratch the itch of those classic survival horror experiences, Hollowbody is definitely worth your time.

Sep 16, 2024It's hard to deliver more for just one person, offering a solid proposal for fans of the classics of the survival horror genre, including a complex narrative. Nathan Hamley shows a lot of potential that we hope he can put on the filed in the near future.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollowbody is scary, dreary, and sad; it's all the things I love about horror games. Sometimes, it embodies these feelings because it nearly repurposes the same monsters, places, and predicaments from the games that inspired it. But it's not all familiar, and the things it does differently are its best attributes, like telling a story conscious of and concerned about sociopolitics and offering a minimalistic but unsettling soundtrack of its own. Maybe the last great Silent Hill game is behind us. I don't know. But I do know its memory remains alive in successes like Hollowbody.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollowbody excels in some key areas, like its sound design, though it also comes up way short in others, like with its level design. Regardless, it's a serviceable survival-horror game that does everything one would expect. Nothing it does is new, but it does everything well enough to make it an easy recommendation to fans of survival horror games from the 2000s.
-
Sep 12, 2024Hollowbody is a classic survival horror experience which will delight fans of those PS2-era frights, but some of the dated elements will frustrate.
-
Sep 18, 2024There are two ways of looking at Hollowbody. As an homage to a bygone gaming era, a conceptual love letter to an influential time, it succeeds pretty well. Without the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, Hollowbody is a pretty unsatisfying experience. If you grew up playing Silent Hill 2 on the PS2, Hollowbody will certainly resonate with your memories. For everyone else, there are simply too many more recent and more accomplished games in the horror genre to spend your time with.
-
Sep 19, 2024Hollowbody aims to pay tribute to early 2000s horror games but falls short of its goal. While it occasionally shines with well-crafted puzzles, it struggles to capture the essence of its inspirations. The outdated aesthetics and lackluster combat detract from the horror experience, and the disjointed story feels pieced together from various ideas. Despite these issues, Hollowbody has its moments, particularly in its engaging puzzles, which hint at its potential. However, the game's overall inconsistency may only appeal to die-hard fans of classic horror, leaving others wanting more. As it stands, "Hollowbody" feels like a project in need of a thorough remaster to realize its full potential and truly honor the genre it seeks to celebrate.
-
Sep 13, 2024Hollowbody has a pretty fascinating atmosphere and really strong vibes, but fails to deliver a fleshed-out survival horror experience. The game is clearly inspired by classic PS2 titles in the genre, but this comes at the expense of the game offering unique mechanics or a thoughtful narrative. And while I have pretty strong feelings about Hollowbody, I still want to jump back into New Game+ and try to get other endings and find answers to the mystery, no matter how vague they might be.
-
Sep 12, 2024It’s just not the most memorable experience, either. Hollowbody stakes its identity on being a PS2-inspired horror game and has trouble building on that and finding its own identity. The world it depicts is enticing, but it struggles to find a story there. On the other hand, it’s not uncomfortable to play. It’s enjoyable for what it is. It’s not completely hollow, but it’s far from solid.
-
Sep 12, 2024I’d say Hollowbody was disappointing but everything it gets wrong about the horror genre is so common it's practically expected at this point.
-
Oct 7, 2024The bottom line is that I had to force myself to stick with this fundamentally likeable homage. Because as much as it is indeed reminiscent of Silent Hill and similar titles, I found it to be rather dull in terms of gameplay.
-
Sep 15, 2024Hollowbody tries hard to reach the heights of the Silent Hill series but several issues holds it back. Its eccentric camera use only often leads to frustration, the visuals are lackluster and the combat system is highly derivative. While a few scenes effectively capture the game's horror aesthetic, they are not enough to create a memorable experience.
