The gameplay is soo formulaic - totally by the numbers, exactly like all the other similar AAA games out there. Plus, the usual hand-holding, non-stop cutscenes, overly long cringe dialogue, invisible walls, pointless fetch quests that ask you to run from point A to point B and then back to point A again, main character constantly narrating what you're supposed to do, etc.

The NPCs literally tell you "check the to do list and get back to me to advance the quest".. like.. they don't even bother. The game tells the player to check the quest log, do the chores, and come back. It really feels like a rigid videogame, and a tedious one at that.

The combat is okay, and so are the puzzles.

As for the exploration, it's kinda fun if you can put aside the atrocious map you're obligated to deal with to understand where to go and/or warp. What were they thinking?! Baffingly bad.

Finally, the controls aren't very intuitive, questionable even, and for people hooked on aCcEsSiBiLiTy there's no option to remap the buttons. WHY.

All and all not the worst experience, but certainly nothing special. Constantly varies from cool little moments to extremely boring, clunky, or annoying parts.

Aren't game developers tired of playing it safe and always doing the same goddamn game that caters to the lowest common denominator?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hogwarts Legacy ending has you become the only Keeper, either absorbing or hiding Isidora’s magic under Hogwarts. It doesn’t matter which choice you make.

In the good ending, you hide Isidora’s magic away from the Wizarding World, hoping that no one will ever find and abuse the power for themselves. In the bad ending, you decide to use it for ‘good’, absorbing it yourself. Either way, Professor Fig meets his demise, and Ranrok is killed.

Afterwards, both endings have the school hall packed with students, hearing Professor Weasley’s eulogy of Professor Fig. However, school isn’t over just yet, and you need to complete the Hogwarts Legacy side quests and fill in your field guide to complete your O.W.Ls.

You get a secret third ending after completing reaching level 34, however, it’s just an announcement of the Hogwarts Legacy House Cup winner. Of course, the winner is whatever House you’re part of.

You're welcome. I just saved you 60 dollars.

This is the epitome of Ubisoft's copy-paste open-world style, complete with meaningless side quests, uninteresting NPCs, and an overwhelming number of collectibles that serve no purpose. The constant barrage of notifications is akin to a national emergency alert on your phone. Unfortunately, a neutral rating is not an option on Steam, and sadly I must give this game a thumbs down.

The constant barrage of notifications is akin to a national emergency alert on your phone. Unfortunately, a neutral rating is not an option on Steam, and sadly I must give this game a thumbs down.

The poor dialogue and open-world design, leave much to be desired. Despite being somewhat enjoyable, this game is frustrating due to its missed potential.

The incredible art style is overshadowed by the lack of good design direction, ultimately leading to disappointment. This game serves as a prime example of the shortcomings of the open-world style, and its issues are indicative of a wider problem in the gaming industry. If you can't do an Elden Ring or BoTW style open world type game, don't even try.

It's clear that not every game can deliver an open world experience like Elden Ring, and those that can't should consider a different approach. Rather than filling their game with endless amounts of copy-pasted content, they should focus on delivering a simple, streamlined experience with engaging gameplay. In fact, in today's gaming landscape, the length of a game can often be more of a negative than a positive, as it serve as a proxy for the amount of copy-pasted trash content. Too often, open world games rely on the quantity of content rather than its quality, resulting in a bloated and underwhelming experience.

    Positives:

The world-building in Hogwarts and Hogsmeade is well done.
Combat is better than expected (after the initial tutorial)
The game features good music, visuals, voice acting, and atmosphere in certain areas.
Broad strokes of the story are interesting
    Open world looks amazing.

    Negatives:

The open-world content is basic and identical, with numerous copy-pasted cairn dungeons that lack variety and offer little in the way of exploration or challenge.
Combat becomes repetitive towards the latter half of the game, with few enemy types and limited customization. The stat system is flawed, with a level difference between a player and enemy making a significant difference in gameplay difficulty.
Generic and unitersting npcs with forced and unnatural dialog and most quests are explained like you are mentally retarded.
Very little enemy variety, with combat designed for boss battles, you still fight trash mobs 99% of the time.
You play the map, not the game for the majority of the game as the game encourages quick travel and following the map blindly, with too little time spent in Hogwarts.
The accessibility settings are not well designed, with a lack of options for players seeking to play without assistance.
Hogsmeade is underwhelming, with only shops and repetitive puzzles.
The player's choice of Hogwarts house has no significant impact on the game.
The game's plot would have been better suited for a regular RPG focused on Hogwarts and immediate surroundings, with a regular character experiencing Hogwarts for the first time rather than a fifth-year student who excels at everything.
The game does not offer the player any meaningful choices or the option to pursue a darker path.
No humor, nothing memorable, it's just kinda meh and forgettable.

Overall I give this a 6/10. About what you can expect from a western open world style game, with the added point for the nice harry potter atmosphere.

If you would have shown any Harry Potter fan this game in 2001 their head would have exploded. Strictly looking at this game in it's own and not comparing it to similar titles, this is the best Harry Potter experience to ever come to PC. If you just focus on the game on it's own merits and don't bring politics into it, it provides a very magical experience.

The open world in this game is beautiful and detailed, with great graphics and decent enough performance. Although ray tracing is completely broken, at least on my PC.

That being said apart from the visuals the world feels very empty and sterile. The characters barely deserve to be described as such, the dialogue and the a lot of the voice acting are unnatural at best and most of the side quests and even a lot of the main quests feel like chores. I get that some quests involve completing tasks for classes in the game, but if they feel about a enticing as doing literal homework back in school the developers went wrong somewhere.
Occasionally the game seems to set up what could be interconnected, branching quests with intriguing premises, only for them to resolve after getting x thing from x place with two lines of placeholder dialogue never to be mentioned again. I think a pretty good early example is a student inviting you to an illegal dueling club after you beat him in a spell duel in class. Sounds rather intriguing right? Definitely some potential for an interesting narrative here right? Except all that happens is you go there, win 3 duels against random people, have an NPC tell you that you did well and that's literally it. It's a similar story with almost every single side quest I played in the game.

The main story can best be described as straightforward and utterly unremarkable. Up to around the halfway mark you're still hoping for something to shake things up, surely some intricate plot twist is gonna unfold soon, I can't wait for the web of intrigue they're spinning to reveal itself. Unfortunately this is not the case and you eventually just resign and accept that that's simply the way the game is.
The main character also has the charisma and personality of a wet paper bag. This is further emphasized by both the female and male character's voice acting which sounds beyond phoned in. It is almost as though they were intentionally trying their hardest to not give them any sort of personality. Now if this was branching CRPG with really far reaching choices where the main character is mostly an avatar for the player to project themselves unto, I could somewhat see why they did it. In a straightforward action RPG where choices are mostly window dressing there is no excuse for it, there are just too many games that have done it better.

To some extend the game is saved by the beautiful open world and a solid combat system, but those can only get you so far and oh boy is it a slog otherwise. In a lot of ways it feels like the worst parts of the newer Assassin's Creed games with very little of the good things in them.
Overall I enjoyed my time with the game somewhat, but it's definitely the kind of game where I'd recommend watching a show on a second screen or listening to a podcast in the background while you're playing it.

The first thing you will notice is the very good level of graphics in the game - in my opinion, the faces of the characters could be much better and more attractive, but overall not bad. In all other respects, it is close to ideal: landscapes, clothes, magical effects and animations - all this is created at a high level. But this level of detail makes the game not run as well on some PC configurations (especially on machines with less than 16GB RAM). And it's interesting why this game didn't get as many 0's as Elden Ring with the same technical issues on some machines (and yes, Hogwarts also has some 21:9 aspect ratio issues). Let's move further, the combat system is excellent for me - all these different spells with different effects can be combined in different ways that make combat system so flexible and perfectly suitable for your play style. Various amount of activities scattered around the world also don't let you boring. But here we come to plot and minus that i met in my playthrough. To me, the main quest, as well as the 3 side quests, look and feel childish without any drama, everything is too slick as if bad endings are something that is not achievable. lso about main quest if planning to rush it on easy difficulty (probably on all others) you probably can't do this because LVL-gates game says to you some thing like "no way bro you need to get N lvl to continue storyline", and on low difficulty the only way to obtain more lvl is do all side quests that you can see. But if you don't wanna see credits in the end of the game and your target is get message that you complete the main quest you dont need to farm everything but still need farm a lot. So as conclusion it grate game with good graphic excellent, combat system and not bad puzzles, but at the same time the game suffers from poor optimization and lvl gates. Expand

You can get lost in the story for hours. There’s a great number of side quests, with variety involving fetching, brewing potions, flying challenges, defeating a number of enemies - including with specific spells or items.

The NPCs, in emphasis the companions and professors, are relatable with very interesting backstories and tidbits of information.
Classes are FUN! I wish we were able to attend more classes, or that they’d be more consistent time wise.

The map is huge, with a lot of exploration. You can unlock landmarks regarding location, enemies, beasts etc. by completing quests or just using a simple revealing spell.

The visuals are beautiful, but the performance is not quite up to the game overall quality. In my case, my pc is between the minimum and recommended specs. I believe they’ll release a path to reparo and optimize the gameplay. Yet, even with hiccups and slight FPS drops, I give this game a 9.5/10.

Seems to be generating money just fine, I hope other publishers and devs don't learn to spew out even more AC Odyssey reskins like they are sports games. What I also want to note negatively is how this doesn't feel like a PC game but more of a mobile game as it's apparant that it's a port and it has to work just the way it does on PC on the Switch as well... the loading times for doors leading outside are infuriating and unacceptable, I mean come on we already moved past this in the gaming industry and now we're coming back with the ports and mobile game quality games and switch versions? When will this world ever stick to progress and learn to speak up everytime we take a step back? You slapped Harry Potter on it and people who haven't owned current gen consoles or a reasonable graphics card are suddenly dropping 2+k $ and call this the best game in the world and think they are seeing 'progress' but all they are seeing is Harry Potter and their last game played 10 years ago and the conclusions they are coming to are about to be expected. And don't even get me started on the price tag (or the transphobic organisations you are supporting via royalties to JKR) ... I wish people weren't only buying merchandise from milked out franchises that capitalism is hyping just to maximise or streamline profits while simultaneously killing every 'boring' settings that would make much more sense in an RPG but just so happen not to be franchises like ... a thief? a Samurai? A knight? Just stop buying Harry Potter, they want you to buy just ONE thing to make you as predictable as a plank of wood or a brick of stone, this game has not shown any kind of progress or consumer friendliness in any way! Peace out Expand

I'm not a fan of the HPU, but:
Comfort, atmosphere, nice graphics, unobtrusive gameplay. A year ago I got 100% of achievements in Elden Ring, here and now I am resting.

Hogwarts Legacy on PC is absolutely beautiful. It has terrific graphics performance, mechanics, voice acting, story, and music. So far, I have experienced very few glitches, save an occasional lag. The care and passion that went into its production is obvious. In my opinion Hogwarts Legacy is a masterpiece!

Hogwarts Legacy is simply the best Harry Potter game ever released, and even someone who is non-binary in real life can see how much value this game has, and even has albeit token inclusion it still doesn't negative the stain of JKRs opinions, but this is about video games and not politics, and we should stick to the task at hand.

Gameplay is summed up in one word, magic because as per typical Harry Potter style, you learn magical attacks and defense as you progress through the story and the combat feels natural and fun, with many different combos and special attacks to make for a thrilling combat system with a loot system similar to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, gear appearance can be changed anytime and that provides for a good character customization, it isn't perfect but it works.

Sound and graphics are both excellent, Honestly I feel like Avalanche's previous title releases have been holding back this studio because Hogwarts Legacy clearly shows what this developer can do. The game does have a few minor sound bugs though such as walking sound effects disappearing so you are walking in complete silence, and sometimes your voice goes very robotic in nature. The bigger issues are related to performance with significant frame rate drops in certain places and a few minor bugs mostly related to being full of items and opening a chest making you lose the item forever but so far nothing truly gamebreaking as of writing this review.

Overall, Hogwarts Legacy is a brilliant game that Harry Potter fans deserve, ignoring the bold claims of antisemitism and trans issues aside, Hogwarts Legacy is faithful to the franchise even down to the little details, plenty of puzzle elements and a morass of collectable items and side quests to keep everyone busy, I would say a contender for game of the year for sure.

I like the graphics, not because it's something next-gen or it looks like cyberpunk but because it gives me a fairytale feeling.
The intro was something I didn't expect. From the first minute we have action, some kind of mystery,death..
Music which have some sounds from the films and give you some nostalgic feeling.
    Char editor is good.

    What I not like.
The npc are all the same without their own character except sebastian who has the potential to became something like mini voldemort. They are no one who will bothering us like malfoy or Snape. Everybody is ohhh the new one help me you are the only one who can do it.
The spell and how you learn them. You going to the class and you expect to something inside it not just press 1 2 buttons and learn a new skill or go do this and came back to me. If I do everything outside the school why am I going on class? Some spells are the same with a little difference and you learning them all in the first hour of the game because you need them for the stupid side quests which you need them to open skins and buff something.
The missions are the same and the whole story are boring. I played 20 hours trying to find all the chest, to find this or that or open doors to get some clothes to get some more exp for my lvl but this is useless. Clothes with bigger stats are dropped all the time. Your lvl doesn't count in battles because they are chaotic. 10 goblins are firing and teleport at you at the same time and you must press O all the time and try to levitate the half of them to can kill the other half.
    Collect animals is useless.
There is no mystery, no jokes, no hate, this is a game for kids between 12 and 18 who never played games like witcher, dragon age, skyrim or even the old HP games. BUT the kids this age doesn't know the HP universe so good like us who are 28 29 30 yo. The grow up with marvel, pubg, fortnite and tiktok. So for who is this game made for?
I crying for my money and I happy I found the game cheaper and didn't pay the whole price.

I thought it would have some intricate combat system with complex combos with this being a game about magic attacks and spells but it’s literally just a mash fest. Spam the attack button and block when the indicator pops up. It’s so incredibly terrible. I regret buying this game. The only good part was the visuals and the world of hog warts itself. The world looks good but is pretty shallow, you can't sit down in the common room for example or anywhere in the world for that fact. The Hogwarts castle itself could feel more alive but the details within the castle are well thought of.

The story is a bit mid for a game based off the Harry potter universe they could've done a lot but decided to play it safe, the game is a 12 rated and it really feels like it, constantly reminding you what to do in puzzles with cringe dialog as well as hand holding throughout the story which becomes tiresome. I do not like the trials either which is the core of the story they are generic and boring.

Outside of the story there's your standard AAA fluff, trials, caves, puzzles, monsters den's etc. Very few monster types here though which is a shame considering the material they had to work from. There's a Pokémon mode that I'm not a fan of as the animals look ridiculous like something out of a 90s Disney movie. The flying is one of my favourite parts of the game, but as soon as the story starts they tell you quidditch is not in the game, you can tell the Devs ran out of time on that one because the quidditch pitch has been moddled to a very high detail, seems odd to have done that but no official mode for it

Edit: I'm lowering my score to a 4 since the Devs have failed to fix performance issues on pc after multiple patches and since the old gen versions are soon to release I highly doubt these will be resolved soon. Such a shame, all I wanted to do was explore hogwarts in high fidelity without bugs, maybe next year the game will be playable.

I would have given it a 10/10 but sadly I had to deduct a point for the fact that even after the day 1 patch, the performance of the game isn't exactly great. I'm playing the game on an RTX 4080 with a Ryzen 7 5800X and 32GB of RAM, on a 4k monitor, and even with DLSS set to Balanced and DLSS frame generation turned on I would get unacceptably low framerates when traveling through the castle, which seemed to get worse over time. Restarting the game helped minimize this, which makes me believe the game must be suffering a memory leak. I hope this will get patched soon so I can give this game a 10/10!

I love being able to disarm an enemy and use the disarmed weapon with another ability to deal even more damage, feels epic! I play on Hard mode and have to say the challenge still feels fair and I actually get a thrill out of fighting, not many games can do hard mode well but I have to say it really just feels like the devs paid attention to balancing modes outside of normal mode as well.

This is the only game next to Cyberpunk 2077 where I actually got immersed in the world and started exploring, doing little side content and side quests without really rushing main quests. The world-building is great, puzzles are fun but get repetitive as there are a lot of the same ones.

Leveling is also not done like most RPGs, you actually HAVE to explore the world to level, it's great design really.

It's also very great to see this game does not have microtransactions or booster-type things. You pay for the game and you get the content, no stupid grinding to entice you to pay for an xp booster.

Is this game the best RPG ever made? No. But it's fun and it does a good job of capturing some of what made the series itself fun. There's going to be review bombing on both sides of the aisle from this game, so it pretty much follows the same line of logic you have to follow for every game or movie with a widely publicized release: ignore the user score, read specific reviews fromIs this game the best RPG ever made? No. But it's fun and it does a good job of capturing some of what made the series itself fun. There's going to be review bombing on both sides of the aisle from this game, so it pretty much follows the same line of logic you have to follow for every game or movie with a widely publicized release: ignore the user score, read specific reviews from reviewers you already trust to be honest and forthright with you.

The strongest parts of the game are arguably the setting (perhaps unsurprisingly), and the combat which is fairly fun. If I had to compare the game to anything, I'd say it feels a little like Fallen Order, but in the Harry Potter world. Unfortunately, as an AAA release, there are also an unusual amount of bugs. Some were fixed by the day one patch, while some haven't been. A strange one to provide as an example is that if you adjust the pitch of the characters voice at all, it causes them to have an oddly robotic tone.

If you aren't already interested in Harry Potter, then you should probably take a pass on this game. If you are interested in Harry Potter, you'll have a lot of fun. Again, I'd put it in a similar boat to Fallen Order with that particular line of logic.

No, the game doesn't deserve the hate it's getting from one side, nor does it do the game any benefit to be promoted by reactionaries or trolls on the other side. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and if you're worried about where your money is going -- this game is probably going to benefit the author less than the Fantastic Beasts movies, which didn't draw nearly as much of a reaction, or ticket sales at Universal Studios, which also haven't drawn a reaction.

If you want a fun Harry Potter game to play, this is probably the best one since the old PS2/Xbox Chamber of Secrets game.

Not really. The character is so ugly. The story is boring and sleepy. It's no fun.

Harry Potter IP is well used and feels magical for the first few hours of play.
What follows is the worst open world I've seen so far.
Even a Far Cry 6 is more innovative and that says a lot. I don't understand this high rating. People should stop judging only the first 5 hours of play and the marketing trailer. - Generic open world activities without any reward. - A pointless

    - Generic open world activities without any reward.
    - A pointless resource system.
    - Only 5 different enemy types.
    - Every square meter of the game world is similar to the other.
    - No reason to travel the open world. Side quests have no content. No magic, hardly any fantasy, no puzzles included.
    - Combat system is fun at first, but wears out quickly due to lack of enemy variety.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this can be a masterpiece but unfortunately is not. First of all game world is not living, every dialogue and characters are linear, almost nothing is natural. Some puzzles repeat themselves and map design is so awful..

All spells are already know at the beginning, storyline is not interesting and do go on..

This game is so good. The graphics, the story, the accesability, the things you can do and explore. This is literally already the best games i’ve played the last 5 years and i don’t think any game will beat this anytime soon. If you’re thinking about buying this, then do it without any doubt. Absolute worth it

I'm not HP fan but god damn this game is amazing. The world, quests, combat, puzzles, everything works so well. There is few bad things too but nothing that would break the game for me.

I am addicted! It truly goes beyond my expectations, the universe is dense, rich and beautiful, there a ton of secrets to uncover, ton of quests, ton of refererences to movies and books, lots of depth in the gameplay... I am loving it!
'However pc performence is mediocre at best. Stutters, fps drops, tearing... A shame for such a good game!

An absolutely stunning game with very impressive performance on PC. Animations, effects and general gameplay is that of a contender for game of the year. It's an extremely impressive last hurrah for Unreal Engine 4, can't wait to see what Unreal Engine 5 brings to the table next.

100% worth a try on PC.

The game lives up to the hype!!! It’s pretty well done considering the ginormous size of it the game plays well on a decent PC with little issues surprisingly, just the occasional stuttering which does not affect gameplay at all! Really well done to Warner bros and Avalanche. We need more games like these! Truly a Game of The Year contender for 2023 for sure!!!! Ignore the woke activistsThe game lives up to the hype!!! Beautiful, cozy and incredibly detailed, Hogwarts Legacy suffers from overabundance of side activities that offer no story, substance or good gameplay. [page 42]

The success of Hogwarts Legacy clearly shows that good sales and warm feedback from players are ensured not so much by the gameplay thought out to the smallest detail but by carefully reproducing the right atmosphere. But this is already a subtle moment, akin to real magic, and here the nameless developers of Avalanche Software succeeded.

Hogwarts Legacy is an altogether excellent port of Wizarding World to PC screens. It proudly belongs to the Young Adult fiction genre, which may make immersion difficult for older gamers.
