It's really a disappointment that Blizzard sort of placed Heroes of the Storm on the back burner. This definitely was the best MOBA. But sadly they canceled the game. My biggest hope in gaming would be that Blizzard is focusing on this game again, and maybe even a console version.

But rating the game, how it was back in 2015-2016. Then it was Legend and a clear 10/10. I love that the game is focusing on Team play, so all the team members have shared XP pools.

Almost every game lost in draft. Trolls want to play some certain hero, no matter what team needs. If Blizzard cared a bit about this game, they fired the ones who is in charge for this terrible MM. But they don't.

    What's good:
    - Simple gameplay which is master'able by average user. No lasthitting. No item buying. Just hero+talents choice and...
    - ...raw, robust action! Since there is no need in splitting one's attention between mobs and shops, the player can fully commit to dominating battlefield.
    - Non-intrusive paid content.

    What's bad:
    - 90% of lootboxes content is absolutely useless. There is no point in having 300+ profile icons since they're cheap to craft and can't be used simultaneously. Sprays? Same here. Yet, 1-3 sprays + 1-3 icons + 0 other iems from a lootbox is a common sight.
    - Playerbase is dwindling. So, longer time to reach the battle and...
    - ... permanent balancer hiccups. Just don't expect intense balanced action. It's you or them. No exceptions.

    What's neutral:
    - Plot: exists.
    - Events: numerous but rarely useful.
    - The developers started experimenting with gameplay recently, adding some spice into a bit stale dish.

Embrace it while it's still playable - and remember it.
This game is worthy to be remembered.

I didnt play in Lol, so particulary i will compare Hots with Dota 2.
When i first saw its graphics, i was surprised it looked very cool and for me, the graphics still better than graphics in dota/lol.

I read many old negative reviews and people say that you need to donate if you want to play ranked or buy new heroes. Its a lie, i could play ranked in a month and have never donated till now, i can play many heroes because i have bought more than half of them, plus you can play some heroes every week without paying for that.Ofc you can donate and unlock ranked in a week, but what do you want?Get lower rank because you played not so much and you are bad player?

What about heroes? In my opinion, we have only 4-5 op heroes, oh you think someone can take them?Every team has 2 ban at the beginning and 1 ban for each team in the middle of preparation. So you can ban op heroes and also some heroes that can beat your pick.If you want to win, make a good pick, i dont see disbalance here.In that case, its similar with Dota.
Every hero has his abilities and talents.Someone said that abilities are similar, i remember only 5 abilities which are similar by its effect (not by animation of cource) or that people want to say that abilities have similar damage or heal?I hope they are not so stupid. In Dota 2 every hero has 4 abilities (i dont remember about passive ability) and you need to make simple upgrades which upgrade damage/heal.Also there are special talents on 10, 15, 20, 25 lvl which can improve your hero stats/give more ability duration/less cooldown/more dmg for ability.
Hots heroes have 5 abilities (5th can be passive or active) , every hero can choose 1 talent of 3-4 (and two to choose for ult), talent up at level 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 20.Some of them have special task to complete and get bonus and there are some which give you new abilities (not so strong, compare with basic). Its clear, that talent system is better in Hots then in Dota. And that was without including Dota items, so lets talk about them.

Items in Dota make a major influence in fight, i find feeding for items is boring, and that is another problem that people say, they say that Hots is boring, too fast and i found guy who said its not funny.
Every game in Dota lasts about 40 mins an average, all the game you are trying to earn money, buy better items and just kill your opponent because you have better items.
Hots is fast, has many maps, the complete opposite of Dota, that how it was made. You think Hots boring because its fast?Because i dont see where it can be boring, if it has 15 different maps and dynamic gameplay.About fun, you want some clowns on the map, who will amuse you or what? For example, find funny playing Cho`Gall with my friend.

Hots has shared level, because of that, there is no guy who will dominate all the opposite team because he got bigger lvl. Team gets exp for killing creeps, taking camps and killing enemy. There is no "Kills mean nothing" or "Its impossible to comeback", Kills give you important exp in the beginning and might give you victory after 20 lvl, because hero respawn is very long at that time of the game.2/5 or 3/5 of the game you need to stay as team (not all the time, how said sever "pro gamers" in these reviews) , the other half heroes must be splited up on all 3-2 lines.
Disconnect problem is not so big, i may have disconnect 1/15 games, but its less than 30 sec.
Now we came to the main problem, the problem of people's behavior. You have a small chance to get a team, where everyone will try to win and wont cry, doing bad for all team. Many people hate Hots for toxic people, but isnt it absolutely all games have such a problem? You can get lower rank because of them, so got I. I got 5 gold after calibration, after several games fall to silver 2 for a long time.It was hard to win every game but then i dealed with that, picking my best heroes.Currently im platinum 3-4.

Hots is an interesting moba game which was made different from other moba games. Its seems easy, but that is the point. You can play other moba, if you dont like its gameplay. Hots was made that way.
That how critics say (and its also a cause because there are no negative critics).

This game deserves at least 1 more point to user score.
    By the way Dota
and Lol have low rating too, everyone just argue with each other. There are people who played Hots and got mad because of "main problem" (and then rated it as 0-4 (who can even rate as 0? 0 score-0 brain)), i think people should left their little whims somewhere else. Still, i wont put bad rating for Dota or Lol because "I played only Dota and then that "Hots" appeared, i wont play it, Dota forever, Hots is trash", its very stupid and looks like child's deed.

    Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the storm is a MOBA game released by Blizzard using iconic characters from their other franchises as the playable heroes
It is made for teens and adults and focuses on the aspects of teamwork and communication that are required in groups.
It competes with the other large MOBAs Dota and League of Legends and though it is the smallest of the 3 it promotes teamwork and cooperation much more than the other 2

As someone who has spent countless hours in Hots I can say that the game itself has very few flaws
The paywalls restricting play of new characters is likely the most tedious and obnoxious flaw the game possesses, it forces you to use the few free rotation of heroes that changes each week to earn gold but this limits your time to improve on these characters and thrusts you into unknowns when forced to swap to new ones when the rotation changes
Different game modes requiring different approaches to the game, quick match and vs Ai are very similar in that you choose the hero you want to play and queue into a match with them whereas the ranked formats and unranked both use a drafting system. Quick match forces you to expect the worst from your teammates or be ready for disappointment, ranked often results in less risky matches where the players fear to make any mistakes should it cause them to lose their precious ranked points and unranked is similar to ranked except with more risk taking as it is view to not matter.
The most challenging part of the game comes initially when your roster of heroes is limited exclusively to the free rotation as unlocking a new hero can take several days of play. The only thing done to alleviate this problem is the variety available in the rotation, it usually contains 2-3 heroes for each role in the game allowing for some options for newer players.

However, despite these negatives the games also contains many positives, the community whilst still containing toxic members is mostly acceptive and willing to help players grasp new concepts. Higher levels of play can open up limitless opportunities to try out unusual and fun strategies that other players would usually berate you for, and the frequent updates and events being added to the game help keep play fresh and exciting.
The map variety allows for different characters to shine of some maps while not being drastically stronger than the rest of the roster. Objective focused teams can lose to enemies who use the team’s tunnel-vision against them and push in multiple locations, yet these strategies won’t be as effective against coordinated teams.
The options in the game allow for changing the graphics settings with higher amounts allowing the character models to fly across the screen when they die, though lower settings are still available for people with computers that aren’t able to handle the higher quality.
Overall, the game can be tough for new players to get into but once past the initial grinding to unlock characters you will be able to enjoy trying out different strategies and characters on the vast selection of maps and objectives the game offers.

Whether you like this game is directly proportional to how much of a MOBA purist you are. If you're looking for a gritty, heavily-optimized, highly twitchy experience that rewards perfect execution, this isn't a game for you. If you want a game that rewards broad strokes game knowledge over pinpoint accuracy, welcome aboard!

PLUSES: Games are shorter, typically 20-30 minutes. All basic abilities are unlocked at level 1, with Ults (a choice of 2 for all but 2 heroes as of March 2018) at level 10 and powerful "Storm" Talents on 20. Heroes fit broadly into roles and sub-classes, and drafts are very rewarding since they're full of counterplay. The lack of an item shop keeps gameplay going smoothly, sometimes evolving in the middle of a big fight. There are no passive bonuses earned outside of each map, so no grinding for rune pages or spells.

MINUSES: Quickmatch lacks a draft, meaning a lot of counterplay gets lost; sometimes you wind up with an unwinnable match. Many of the truly innovative heroes like Medivh, Cho'Gall, and Abathur wind up a liability if someone on your team doesn't know how to play with them. Hero pricing has gone down since the 2.0 update in early 2017, but is still a bit high (though you won't have much trouble picking up a hero a week on dailies alone). And lastly, this game *does* have loot boxes; they're mostly cosmetic (occasionally permanently unlocking a Hero for free), but if you're someone whose brain chemistry makes them bothersome, be aware that they're there. I can't give a game with loot boxes a 10/10 in good conscience.

There's also been some complaints about matchmaking, but in my experience that seems to be confined to people with either very high or very low MMR. High end people are rare and difficult to pair effectively, while very bad people typically overestimate their own skill or grief to the point that the game thinks they're worse off than they are.

I've been playing this game on a more-or-less daily for more than two years, so yeah, I'm a fan.

In the end it's just a waste of time and money, Heroes 2.0 it's made in special so that they can keep players a little longer. There are far better games to invest time on like Rainbow Six Siege and others. Still better than Lol or Dota , but nowhere near being a decent game

To see an army of demons serve under the foul smelling lord of sin himself, this smell coming from his basketball game he played prior because what six legged demon of vivid nightmares doesn't tear it up on the court?
In an industry of halfassed games this game is masterfully made. Whether you look from a balance standpoint, artistic, voice, depth and sheer euphoria of sending the lich king to hell, the real hell, the one where he has to watch as his team is slaughtered by a gnome so ugly even stitches stomache turns sour.
Heroes of the storm is a very fun take on what some consider a standard moba. There are no items in this game. What? How does that make this game good!? It isnt just that but many other aspects that bring me back day after day to azmodunk people unto the dark texture-less void. Matches in this game feel much more team based than other moba's which I quite like. The fights are faster but feel as if time is slowed as each stroke and every decision has the potential to take a conflict to new heights.
The leveling system and aquisition of abilities is very fun as well. One must use all tools they have as if it were a crystal ball of magicy weirdness as the team levels, not the player. everyone on a team is the same level and all xp is shared to the team xp bar. You can stil get more xp in a game than your teammates, but only the kind that affects profile level or rank. This insentavises teamwork and for one to carry a game is much more difficult.
Luring me again and again with the opportunity to bathe in the blood of my enemies, I capture tribute and employ anubis himself to assist my team of magic wielders, creepy giga-bugs and edgy future soldiers of space. We push the lane all the way back, holding eachothers trust as tightly as we hold our hand to the throat of the demons we so desperately seek to kill. As we fight on many lands and plains we seek victory through strategy and maybe a god or two. As my team will agree empowering our angel master to duke it out with a demon on the battlefield is as enjoyable to watch as it is to fight by their side!
The music and voice and art of this masterpiece only adds to the sharp love i feel towards my support. Oh supports thank you so much, but its still your fault!
From being the mind of three fat vikings, one of two heads on an ogre or just playing diablo himself, there is no better game of teamwork in the moba genera. This game brings everything to the table from amazing maps and skins to fights that leave you feeling like a GOD. The smell of blood has never been so great!
This game has its highs and very few lows ( one being random teammates, there is no fixing stupid no matter how much healing or tips are given ). That said this game is much more fun with a friend but stands tall and filled with opportunities to fight in the best clash of nerd heroes and villains alike from the amazing universes that blizzard has so delicately built over the years.
With every inch of my rather large body i encourage you play this game! Make new allies and indulge upon new blood as each match offers new tactics, objectives and play styles as well as builds and synergies. With 21 free heroes ripe for the taking as soon as you load in and 50+ more to unlock ( this number is ever growing with characters from all of blizzards ip's. This makes for many fun nights up too late laughing your ass off because the 20 kill streak you are on induces hysteria and blood lust. Free to play and an amazing experience this is a must play for anyone with a computer!

This game has been such a pleasant SURPRISE! As a longtime casual SMITE player, I thought it would be too boring & simple after about a week of trying it.... but then I realized that when it forgoes the meta of "standard item builds" for your class and replaces this with hero-specific talent trees this creates a very personalized sense of build and progression for each hero. Then you realize how the objectives subtley change how the game plays on a map-to-map basis, and you see what a gem this MOBA is.

a Great free MOBA game. I like this game even more then League of Legends. Why? Because of the variaty of maps and playstyle. not only that the game sessions are much shorter and more intense.
This game is also really F2P friendly, and for the upcomming version 2.0 it will be even more F2P friendly, also skins are possible to unlock. Great game! 8/10 (maybe 9/10 when version 2.0 comes out)

HoTS is a MOBA, or a Team Brawler in Blizzard's words because they like to change the name of everything when they do it for whatever reason. This is a really strange MOBA actually. This is a really strange MOBA actually. No golds or items, no last hitting, team gains experience with you which is helpful for leveling, to build your character you select talents at certain levels, you can chose between two (rarely three) ultimates which are powerful skills that you can unlock at level 10. The games run about 15-25 minutes and generally fast paced. There are different maps with different objectives, layout and theme, which affects the comps, strategies and match duration. The game is much more teamfight based than other MOBA's. Because the game is less lethal, the fights feel slower and more strategical, rather than being decided by "who has the fattest carry". E-sport scene (especially Korea and Europe) is really fun to watch.

So how is it compared to LoL other than the points mentioned above? The skills are much less complicated and more like vanilla LoL actually. In vanilla LoL, champions were simple and most of them didn't require superior timing and aim to use at an effective level. In short, hero skills in HoTS is Vanilla LoL with more skillshots. Also, thankfully the game is much less lethal, i.e you don't die to a fed Syndra pressing R button, feels good man. How is it compared to DOTA2. DOTA2 has a lot of depth, day/night, active items, deny, high ground, trees, evasion, stats and the list goes on. HoTS has none of those, which is not a bad deal since nothing but active items make the game more interesting. You can get active skills from talents in HoTS, but the choices are much more limited. In HoTS, skills are shorter and more skillshot based and therefor, fair. HoTs is good at taking good stuff from both those games and Blizzard franchise, then creating satisfying skillsets. A character can have different playstyles but not unlimited ones unlike DOTA2, i.e a healer is a healer, you can build them to do more damage or more healing but it is still a healer. Yes, the game has healers unlike LoL.

I talked positively until now, let's beat the game down a bit. Balance. I hate Blizzard for this, but they will never change. Nerf the high skill cap hero that wins games until it is not viable. We've seen it in Overwatch, but HoTS had this issue much before OW. And by nerfing those heroes, and buffing the no skill ones, you are kind of messing up with matchmaking. Matchmaking. People used to abuse overpowered no-skill heroes to climb the ladder. The nerfs were always late, the ban system was non-existent for a while, and some people got really cheap mmr abusing the system. Now that everything is kind of fixed, why there is not a damn mmr reset. I don't play ranked anymore, even if I go 0/10 or 10/10 in placements I will be diamond 3. How is that fair Blizzard. Also, we need swaps when picking heroes, why a simple yet amazing feature like this is still not implemented yet? Why don't we have voice chat when Overwatch does, which requires at least as much communication as HoTS? Community. This community is full of crybabies who are afraid of interacting with real people. I see people in Reddit, who are motivating people to use the feature "disable team chat". This is a team based game. Go play a single player game if you don't want to communicate. Reporting system. It is absolute **** If you play the game enough, you will get reported enough to be "silenced". You can't use the chat, you can't enter ranked play. I never got silenced myself but know a lot of people who are silenced just because some Russian premades didn't like the guy and decided to report him. The system is dumb and needs to be re-implemented.

Unlike what people say in negative reviews, comebacks are pretty possible and much more frequent in high level play. There will be times when both teams are kind of equal in talent tiers unless the losing team screws big time. Also buying heroes without real money is much easier since there are Brawls and end-season rewards which give you a lot of gold.

If you like MOBAs, give it a try. It is a great game that keeps getting better by years.

Coming from Dota 2, I had to overcome the initial "this is dumbed down" feeling, HotS is quite radical in what it stripped from the usual MOBA mechanics. But the result is a lot of fun without unnecessary clutter of last hitting, denying and juggling with backpack items. To realize that I don't need all this "arcane" knowledge I needed some time. This is a true "hero brawler" - a game of intense teamfights from the start where your ability matters the most.

I also had to accept the fact that HotS business model is different. I paid some money for a bundle and played some promo matches against AI to get a decent base of heroes and a stimpack (experience aka in-game gold earning rate boost). I needed to put up with some painful grind and I'm not a fan of locking heroes behind the paywall.

The major area where HotS lacks in my opinion is the e-sports appeal. It is way more entertaining to play HotS than to watch HotS. Lack of proper spectator mode doesn't help.

It doesn't matter that much, It's nice to have a quality game where your favorite characters from all your favorite games battle each other.

You dont have to fight with your team for farm because gold and items are irrelevant. You all share exp therefore u cant just afk farm and kill steal your way into making this a solo oriented game. The game removes item building in order to reduce the stupidly long match durations that dota has. It has a ton of map varieties unlike dota and lol (ik league has other maps but 99% of time you play the standard map anyways) which adds a lot to a game that is all about repetition. HOS is also rich with lore thanks to Blizzard bringing characters from its other 4 top games. (Bonus for the fanboys like me) The devs actually work hard and release new heroes and patches quickly unlike dota2 which gets major patches every 6 months and adds a hero every 1-2 years zzzz. One problem the game has is that the talents dont quite make up for the lack of diversity and skill this game compensated by removing items and other louzy and unfun yet skill demanding mechanics like last-hitting, microing etc. I hope Blizzard will come up with a solution for that or just add more to the talent tree of the heroes to give the game more complexity Expand

People say they can't carry; they are wrong, they are just less able to notice game changing opportunities, or are potentially really bad. LostSands is my username in League of Legends, and I am a Platinum V support main. I play Heroes of the Storm now because it is an objectively better game, and I maintain a 65% win rate in my games. You 100% can carry a game by playing the right characters and making the right play at the right time.

For individuals who are saying that it's community is toxic, that is ultimately not a consequence of the game, but rather a consequence of any given online MOBA community, and HotS is by far the most tame of any of them due to the fact that you literally cannot spend that much time in a game typing, or else you aren't playing.

Make no mistake, If you wanted to complain about Heroes of the Storm, then you can absolutely do so, but it should be done for the right reasons. The largests flaw in heroes of the storm for me is a consequence of one of it's upsides. Games are shorter, and more team oriented, objective centric. Because of this, as an individual who is very competitive, it makes the entire game feel less impactful

There are many times that I know I do very well, landing a critical snare, or a well timed ult, and these things lead to finishing the game. However, these moments don't stack up very well to the moments I have done at the 37 minute mark in League.

I have been playing it a lot for a year. It is clearly the best MOBA game in the market right now. Better than LoL or Dota 2, by a large margin.

The MOBA genre was born out of mods for earlier RTS games. They proved really successful, so standalone versions like LoL were introduced. Problem is, those earlier mods depended on RTS engines like Warcraft 3, and many concepts of those mods were influenced by those games, while really not making much sense. When LoL and Dota 2 copied those mods, they brought these problems in their games as well.

Other MOBAs rely too much on last hitting, which is a very boring thing to do, and have concepts like "carries", which is stupid. You are spending at least half the game's time laning mindlessly for gold.

Also, other MOBAs are playing only on 1 main map, with clear cookie cutter builds everyone copies from the others. The supposed "depth" doesn't really exist, it is an illusion, all you have to do is follow the "meta", last hit for 20 minutes, and then play another 20-30 minutes when you already know the outcome of the game but can't really leave.

Heroes, a fresh take on the gerne, removes many of those problems. No last hitting, shared team experience, lots of different maps with different strategies, removal of items, you instead get talent choices unique per hero. The laning phase is quite short and not that tedious, then the game becomes action-packed. Comebacks are extremely common, you don't really know what will happen until the very end.

It is deceptively deep as a game, in my opinion much deeper than LoL or Dota 2. While you can "learn" the basics really easily, and it really is the best MOBA for a newcomer to get into, you have a loooooong way to go before you understand how each map should be played, how heroes synergise with and against each other, and how to teamfight properly.

Also, it is probably the best F2P model i have ever seen. Ignore the haters, you can be 100% competitive and have fun without ever spending a single cent. All heroes are available with purchase for in game gold. Match gold gain rates are really slow, but the game features "daily" quest that are completed very easily and provide lots of gold. Just completing these dailies in PvP games will take 1 hour per day and will allow you to buy plenty of heroes per month, alongside all the other gold bonuses you get from leveling up and other promotions/events. Skins and mounts are costly when not on-sale, but the game has to make money from somewhere, and they are purely cosmetic.

The main problem of this game, is the matchmaking system, which is really bad and easily exploitable. If you have friends to play with, this game will be a blast, but if you are solo, this game can be frustrating. Since this game is the most team-oriented of the MOBAs, your individual influence is very low. If you have trolls, afkers, or just bad players, you may lose games while still playing really well. But still, the game is worth it, even with the bad matchmaking.

So, if you like MOBAs or want to get into MOBAs, this is the game for you. If you don't like past MOBAs, this may be the game for you. It is free, just try it!

I don't understand how people can complain about the costs especially if you compare it to other MOBAs, especially because nothing you have to buy with real money affects your ability to play the game at high levels. You can unlock heroes with gold earned in game, pay real money, 10 heroes are free to play each week and heroes are always on sale. You can pick up some tier one heroes for less than $4. It's relatively quick to accumulate gold to get a decent selection of heroes, and there is no advantage to veteran players, other than actual skill, to give them an unfair advantage over new players. For some reason, banning is still a thing, so depending on which hero or heroes are your favourite, if you play in ranked matches, you may rarely get to play your favourites as they may simply get banned.

Possibly the best genre evolution is team-wide shared experience accumulation within a game, allowing support and tank players to also kick ass. Unfortunately the game can suffer from performance issues even on high-end hardware. Perhaps a side effect of having the game based on the StarCraft 2 engine, which may not be optimally tuned for modern hardware. This is probably the only major flaw of the game, but a potentially very detrimental one.

The heroes and villains in the game are drawn from the various Blizzard franchises, primarily Diablo, StarCraft and WarCraft. They have plenty of character and are drawn and animated nicely, usually with meaty sound effects that make it a pleasure to destroy an enemy hero and watch what the physics engine does with them afterwards.

The pricing appears crazy to me. The individual heroes and bundles, have a very reasonable price in in-game currency, while their real money price is prohibitively expensive, even looking at the bundles they have on sale. For the full price of an AAA game, you will only get a handful of the game's heroes and a few skins. It's not really a problem for the player, as you can just buy the heroes you want with gold, but before I would spend real money over simply acquiring gold, they'd probably need to halve the real money costs and increase the gold costs by 50%. But maybe I'm just not the average spender.

    PROs
    - Best designed MOBA out there
    - Great selection of heroes/villains
    - Relatively easy to get in-game money for buying new heroes

    CONs
    - Poor optimization
    - Crazy real money prices
    - Banning system

This is not a game that you want to play solo! It's way more fun with a squad of similarly skilled players. The best part of the game is the insane team fights. The worst part is not being able to leave a quickmatch or an A.I. match, I understand why they did this but completely disagree with it... If you get really into this game the microtransactions will get you, for a free-to-play game you will find yourself spending $60 in no time, but for a AAA game that your going to put 50+ hours into, i'd say it's well worth it. To address some criticisms from other writeups, I'll say that I've never felt tempted to spend money in the cash store. I might agree that the prices are outrageous, but by grinding in-game gold, I've bought 24 heroes, leaving 21 that I don't own. I've bought two 'master' skins, which are as expensive as the most expensive heroes, so basically I've gotten to the point of impulsively buying cosmetics. Never have I been tempted to buy anything with cash. There are no pay-to-pown temptations, no pay gates to content. Actually, I think there are some skins that come with some sort of themed abilities, and I don't want anybody to feel misled about that, but to me this looks like an excuse to spend money, for those who want to spend money. If you are a completist who has to own everything in the shop, then maybe that's different. For me, this game is entirely free to play, it's that simple.

Next, how do we compare this to League of Legends and Dota 2? Well, it seems like in this genre all these games have kind of simplified graphics. Maybe they're tuned to play on a larger variety of hardware, and not lag, etc. 'Heroes' is like the others in this respect. And, movement and basic attacks are right-clicks, while hero abilities are triggered by the QWE keys (initially) and left-clicks. So the gameplay is similar as far as the controls. And as far as the idea of two teams of five heroes, facing off across a map, split into a small number of lanes, etc. You know, minion waves march across the lanes, and defensive structures for both teams defend 'their' half of the map. I'm no expert on Lol or Dota 2, though I've played a few games of each. In 'Heroes', it's easy to gain a slight advantage, but it's hard to snowball to an unfair one. Lots of the time, teams are within touching distance, and I think the other games are more known for the phenomenon of one player falling behind and becoming a liability.

Here are some remarks that won't be for those who don't even know what MOBAs are and why they're all the rage: In 'Heroes', each map is dotted with mercenary camps, which are minor aids to your pushing power, capable of pushing through defences if left unchecked. The maps, are themed around their 'objectives', and there is laning on top of those objectives, on top of levelling, and the 'things to do' never stops. I appreciate that there are smaller maps, forcing you to battle intently for big consequences, but the maps are different. A game is just 15 to 20 minutes. I really find that most rounds remain winnable for either team until a very advanced stage. I've seen huge comebacks, I've seen decisive late-game teamfights. I've seen no filler, here.

Maybe MOBAs are a very specific sort of game that you either are into or not. Must you play this, must you experience this? Maybe not. Where I'm at, I reached max level (40) relatively quickly, and there's nothing much else to gain after that other than leveling up individual heroes for the odd gold bonus. There's a competetive ladder, where I've won over 100 games, so I'm movin' on up. Only when you get off of the bottom rungs of that so-called 'Hero League', as I now have, do you find that no all of your teammates are morons. There is an ironclad rule, that if somebody is chatting, they're reminding you that everybody playing the game is a moron. I honestly can see no redeeming value for chat, here, at all. Like it's been removed from Hearthstone, which seems draconian, but again, honestly, etc. Yet I played a few team games (where all five players are queued up as a team) where we used voice chat, and shockingly I had fallen in with chaming wonderful dudes. Even the time that we lost a game! weird. But in Hero League you queue up along or with one other person, and get thrown into a team of five. Again, once you move up, you get among serious players but I've played for several weeks to get to this point. BTW it's fascinating how much variety and depth there is to the game, as I still don't call myself actually *good*, by any stretch! I think that clearly, a lot of complexities from other mobas are ironed out or removed completely. But, learning the heroes and maps is fun and has depth to it. And, it DOES require you to concentrate and put your best effort in to be the kind of player who's an asset to your team instead of a hindrance.

From me, then, this is recommended to anyone who has even considered a MOBA. Is it really a 9? Yes, heck, I didn't toss it a '10'. I'm intimidated at how people have been writing off this game, and I wonder whether winning or losing some online match with 4 random anonymous teammates will hardly matter either way. I think a permanent team of five mates ready to play seems, at this point, like the ideal here, to me. And it's a totally different experience using voice chat -- which might be a totally unfair advantage, too!

The heroes have a HUGE variance and you will find a character you like. You can play as Murky with a 3 second respawn or The Lost Vikings where you control 3 characters etc

The f2p grind is not as long/hard as lol. You do earn a small amount per game as compared to lol or dota, but you earn ridiculous amounts from quests and milestones. I just hit level 40 and i have 14 champs, 2 of which are the most expensive. When I hit max level in lol i only had 5 champs (granted i had expensive taste in that game, and this was during the age of absurdly priced runes). The only way the grind is harder is if you are playing 24/7, because at a certain of binge gaming HotS absolutely does become more grindy, but I'm not even close to having that much time to game. However, the $ prices are higher than LoL for individual items, bundles are huge savings.

Alot of negative reviews focus on team shared exp saying that this brings down because you cant save your team. People saying this are the toxic lol/dota players that start raging at the first sign of a bad team. The underdog system makes it so that one player CAN bring the ENTIRE team back up to a level playing field. Ask any experienced HotS player. It is not uncommon that you are behind by 3 levels at minute 10, but back on a level playing field by minute 15-17. This is essentially unheard of in LoL. I cant begin to explain how many LoL games I've played where a carry lost early and never had a chance to recoup and we go on without significant AD damage, or a jungler made mistakes, lost some camps, and now can't gank or tank for the next 15 minutes while the team lays helpless against a snowballing jungler. The shared exp in HotS is actually what allows a single person to bring back the ENTIRE team, and its not that rare.

I understand alot of the apprehension of no items. But when we sit and look at LoL, how often do we see AD carries with identical builds? Ap carries? Tanks? Junglers? How many ADs build serker greaves, blood thirster, phantom dancer, infinity edge? Is there really that much diversity in other mobas when each role really just uses all the same items. I actually see comments laughing at HotS for only giving players 6 choices for their build. How is not easily comparable to items? Most games in other Mobas dont even make it to full builds. Granted, it took me until about lvl 20 in HotS to truly get over not having items, but talents are much more unique to each hero than items ever were. And there is actually diversity in your choices than every X champ having to follow the same build. And these aren't minor choices, they are choices that change your abilities. In LoL, you may have your serker greavers, blood thirster and infinity edge, but how are these items actually changing you? They are making you stronger and more of a threat but thats it, its not a diverse build, you really arent any different just stronger. Talent choices in HotS are choices that add stuns, increase slow, increase cast range, lower CD based on enemies hit, etc etc etc. These choices fundamentally change your champ.

There are negative comments saying it is slow and repetitive... Now this is very odd because I dont know at all see how you can think that this game is slow and I especially cant imagine how it's repetitive. Now, I did enjoy the laning phase of LoL, especially for mid, and HotS essentially removes the laning phase. This may be considered a negative, but it makes the game FAST. Brawls and ganks are happening immediately, team fights start at minute 2 on some maps. 4v4 fights happen on some maps to contest vision even before minion waves start clashing. You start with 3 abilities. This game is FAST game. And it is certainly not repetitive. How can LoL and Dota players say that? I come from LoL, where in draft I know where I'll be finding each enemy champ before the match even starts. I know what builds to expect. I know at what minute it's best for their jungler to come bot and get me. Ever read a jungling guide for LoL? How is that not repetitive but HotS is? Except for specialists, you usually dont know what lane anyone is going to. You can play only one champ and you will be in different lanes each game. On top of that, you wont be stuck in a lane for most the game, you'll be brawling. And of course, HotS has map diversity. So not only are you changing lanes and moving around and not following a preset minute by minute guide, you are reading the new map, the new situation, the new comps. Oh crap, we are pushing top lane and the sky temple showed up bot and they have mercs pushing mid at minute 20, we are now in a dire situation that doesnt show up on a guide because this game is way more fluid than any other moba out there.

This game is very different from other MOBA's, it's easy to be apprehensive about it. I primarily come from LoL and I'm not going back anytime soon just to spend 3 hours to only complete 3 games where my teammates yell at each other the whole time

It is not necessarily a casual game, it is accessible to players new to MOBAs ,or veterans for the matter ( Ranked Mode ). It is also very unique since it uses the Talent System, and it has no items. The game is also full of nice little details and easter eggs ( such as heroes talking to eachother before the match actually starts ) .

As a MOBA veteran (I played the original DotA Allstars many years ago religiously) I've played nearly every MOBA under the sun up until about 3 years ago. I had to quit playing because a new addition to the family was and is taking up a-lot of my spare time so I could only play a game here and there.

The problem with that is in DotA 2 and LoL the games are long and very skill intensive.

I had to quit playing because a new addition to the family was and is taking up a-lot of my spare time so I could only play a game here and there.

The problem with that is in DotA 2 and LoL the games are long and very skill intensive. If you want to play seriously at all you need to keep up with the incredibly un-fun last hitting and denying. So I just stopped knowing that I would always be out of practice and I would also be constantly bashed by the trash communities in both games.

Fast forward to about 5 months ago, I discovered Heroes of the Storm was ready to play in my Bnet client. I wasn't excited or anything because I already knew I didn't have much time to game but my curiosity got the best of me and I checked it out. I am REALLY glad I did.

First off, this is definitely a more casual game. Games are much shorter and the gameplay is all about team fights, jungle baddies and objectives. Instead of the painfully boring slow starts consisting of denying and last hitting present in other MOBA'S, you jump right in to the action and HotS does MOBA action better than all the rest.

This is where skill comes in. Team fights and objectives present great targets for strategy and skill. A team working together will always beat a team that does not and Blizzard made working together SO very easy with it's auto-ping system. You don't need to chat, just ping something on the map and your team knows what you mean and what to do. It's genius! I found myself immediately having a blast the very first game I played. No-one bashed me for being new and 2 of my teamates even helped me out with advice in-game. Your team shares XP so everything you kill, every objective you complete contributes to your teams overall level. As you level, you unlock talents. Talents present the diversity in builds in HotS instead of items. This is also a great change that removes a-lot of the busywork present in other MOBA's. I quickly made 3 builds for Sonya, one focused on siege damage and laning, one on killing enemy heroes and one on tanking, all 3 worked great and played very differently! I didn't have to look up item builds, or farm for gold to get it done.. I just had to fight and do objectives and help my team!

I've finally found a MOBA I can play with my time constraints. And it happens to be the very best one I have ever played. Blizzard has surprised and delighted me with this game. Totally worth playing!

    - best action packed gameplay of any MOBA
    - focuses on fun and teamwork over last hitting and denying
    - Objectives are unique and effective for each of the 8 maps
    - Quick games!
    - did I say it's fun yet? cuz it really is.
    - Talents allow very versatile Hero builds.
    - In-game gold earning is pretty quick
    - Community is actually not full of a$$holes!

In an era where MOBAs reign and multiply, it's the originality of one game that allows them to succeed. For the most part of course: we saw experiments like SMNC, Dawngate, and maybe Smite but they end up either failing, being cancelled or just feel too different to be fun. HoTS however feels different on some regards.

I will admit upfront: I was not expecting any good from this game

For the most part of course: we saw experiments like SMNC, Dawngate, and maybe Smite but they end up either failing, being cancelled or just feel too different to be fun. HoTS however feels different on some regards.

I will admit upfront: I was not expecting any good from this game and I simply thought that this was going to be another LoL or DOTA2 clone with no innovation whatsoever. But in the end I was partially wrong, and I'm glad that the game is actually tons of fun!

Instead of talking of what the game is about, I want to focus on what makes HotS different:

-There are no items. Hence, there's no gold. Hence there's no last hitting. Everyone takes experience points at the same time and you don't get to be shouted if you're a support in need of money: you can attack and get yourself already into the battle from level 1.

There are no levels. To be precise, the levels are shared between all of your team mates but it doesn't mean you can slack off: each player gives exp from their creep farming and hero killing, but there's no fear of being left behind anyway: if your exp rate is low you just go and farm creeps.

There is no jungling. Again, to be precise you can find creeps in the jungle but they have another role, and that's to push the lane. While giving exp, they also turn into stronger creeps that will push the lane and help you out, especially boss types.

No skill levelling. Your skill levels up with your level and you start with all 3 at once from level 1, while you have to choose your ultimate at level 10 (instead of 6). Instead of skills however you have talents and if you've played WoW for the past 2-3 years you'd understand what it is. If not, it simply means that your character gets unique perks on their skills of their choosing, greatly modifying their skills' functions.

The best example I can give is the new hero Kharazim: he is a melee support but with the right talents he can turn into quite a good damage dealer. Granted not all heroes have the same luck, but their talents can potentially change how they behave in combat.

There is more than one map. Most of the maps are still the standard 3 lane way, with one being a 2 lane, but the difference here is that you have more than one map and each one of them have unique events that you MUST do in order to win. In Blackheart's bay for example you have to hunt gold coins so that the pirate will use his cannon on the enemy team's buildings, and or in another where you need to collect seeds to build an horror that you can use, and so on. As of now, there are a total of 9 maps and they are always random chose, meaning that your last match might be totally different than the last.

Overall, the main feature of this game is that it's, quite literally, a simplified MOBA that cuts the fat around the most annoying parts (gold farming, exp farming, etc), and simply makes it more about the actual combat rather than being around preparing to combat. Fights don't last more than 20 minutes (I won some in 10 as well), and that means you can have that "one more game" feeling quite a lot.

Still...the game has flaws. Some aren't game breaking, sure, but they're flaws nevertheless.

The game is still relatively new, which means we have a total of only 40 heroes right now: not a lot for a MOBA, especially where in LoL we have more than 100.

The shop's prices are insanely high. Sure, LoL's skins aren't cheap either but usually the heroes in that game aren't costy, but in HotS a hero can cost up to 10 bucks! And some skins? 15 bucks too! Luckily enough you can buy them with daily missions that give you gold, but that'll take you a very long time before you can purchase your favourite hero.

The lack of items, gold, and experience farming might make the game too easy for some and the talents don't always translate into new builds: if you have one build working you might as well stick with that only. Besides, didn't you do the same on LoL? Didn't you always build the same, exact items for most matches?

And for last, the game is mostly based of events in the map and might turn off the purists, since you ARE required to achieve the events' goals in order to win.

But still I cannot deny that I had a lot of fun playing so far and I quite literally don't see a reason to play Dota or LoL anymore: those games are complex, yes, but they don't allow mistakes to happen and rely on a high skill level to play another hero properly. But in this game, you can play any hero you want and have fun right at the beginning without worrying about too much of your skills. Sure, some heroes are harder than others but even the hardest to play can be fun to try.

With that said, I highly recommend to give this game a try. It tries new things and, in my opinion, it succeeds on making a new type of MOBA. Definitely a must try.

After reading some reviews I really dont know what game those guys were playing.

Ingame prices are insane, but you can get a real good starter package for ~15$ on the internet is you want to heroleague faster. That said, you get enough money by just playing the game to have all cheap heroes and one expensive when you reach heroleague level. Also the "long" grind helps players to understand the game before going competitive.

I never liked LoL or Dota because of last hits and an awful community. But I really enjoy HotS. Its easy to play but hard to master.

    Pros:
Automatic saving of full game replays and easy sharing

Good sense of humor and atmosphere; fun to see old Blizzard game characters return as well
Positive in-game feedback from narrator and other champs is a nice change
High attention to detail and ease of navigation through all game interfaces
Starting matches with all QWER abilities makes you feel immediately powerful and relevant
Lack of last-hitting means more focus on champ-to-champ conflict and taking objectives
Lanes are much shorter and riding mounts means quicker and more engaging play
Average game is only about 20 minutes, with no lack of action
Many different maps to play on with their own mechanics
In general players are punished less for mistakes, encouraging more positive community reactions

    Cons:
Hard-won last-hitting skills are lost here
No "items" or in-game currency to spend at shops
Hero experience and Levels are spread out across entire team, meaning you cannot personally "snowball"
Purchasing champs or skins with real money is slightly more expensive than in other games
Fewer Heroes to choose from since the game is relatively new
Graphics are good but not mindblowing
Some abilities have unexplained mechanics (like someone's dash/tunneling making them take no damage)

The strategies are different than those in LoL or DOTA2, and if you like those games the way they are, HotS may not be for you.

But if you've been frustrated by mechanics that seem out-of-place, if you're tired of being carried or trying to carry, and tired of 40+ minute matches, HotS could be perfect for you.

Items are gone, replaced by Talents and a variety of well-balanced maps. There's less emphasis on personally ensuring your team's victory and much more on creating synergies within your team and controlling the battleground.

The graphics are gorgeous, though the game still needs performance polishing for team-fights where FPS can dip by 20 or more.

HotS feels like everything MOBAs always should have been. If you've never tried a MOBA, this is definitely the place to start.

I started Moba's with the original Dota on Warcraft 3, It was a tough gig back then. People expected you to be an expert and new players got a really hard time. I also played League of Legends for 2 years and got Gold Rank IV.

A much needed refresh of the MOBA style. no longer do you need to compete against your team in a team game. No more recycle bad mechanics like last hitting and a bevy of maps that allow for strategic depth not found in other MOBAS

Heroes of the Storm is an exceptional game that’s thrown the cat amongst the pigeons in this rigid genre.

In Heroes of the Storm you play as one of Blizzard's iconic characters from Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. At first glance the game looks like a typical 5 vs 5 MOBA, but there are changes that differentiate it from its competitors. The matches are shorter, items have been replaced with talents and all maps have different side objectives. Overall, the changes have made the game more intense and varied. The main thing that I have issues with is the payment model. At first it seems fair and reasonable, but after a while you realize that you have to spend tons of money if you want to unlock all the characters or play the game for a long time. [Sept 2015]
