This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished playing this campaign yesterday, but I wanted to wait a day before writing this review to make sure my analysis was more grounded. I was massively disappointed in this campaign. The only thing about the experience that makes it salvageable is the core gunplay. It's very polished, and while some weapons are clearly better than others each has a niche it can be useful for.

Moving on to the shortcomings. The story is bland and uninteresting. The writers clearly have no idea how to push the story forward, and it becomes more apparent the longer you play. There is a huge reliance on nostalgia and annoying holograms to fill in the blanks for the story when those blanks desperately needed more screen time than what was actually focused on. Killing Cortana offscreen was incredibly dumb, since it wastes all the time spent building up to her conquest during Halo 5. The villain of the story satisfies every cliche you can think of. 95% of his screen time is spent gloating to the Chief about how he has won and that he is big and tough because he beat the UNSC. It gets old very fast.

Moving on to the level/world design: it's not that great. Sure, it LOOKS great and the world the Chief explores looks very polished (except for the massive frame drops you'll experience; seriously, the game dropped below 30 FPS at times while I was playing), but there's no substance to anything. You spend way too much of your time just walking from place to place, and the interiors you explore are uninspiring and copy-pasted all throughout the game. There were several times where I wasn't even sure if I was going in the right direction because everything looks the same (despite using the navigation tool). Most of the side activities boil down to 'go to this place and kill this enemy' which is exactly what you do in the main story, so it just comes off as padding.

I could go on, but I think I've made my point. In the months leading up to this game's release I was so excited to play this campaign, but I mentally checked out around halfway through and only finished it because I spent $60 and wanted some form of closure however unsatisfying it was. If you haven't bought this game, i strongly recommend waiting for a price drop or getting it through Xbox game pass so you don't have to pay full price for it. This game is incomplete and unsatisfactory, and it is not worth the price tag.

Halo was my one of the most anticipated games because of the hype around the launch. TL;DR If you like open world games like the ones Ubisoft makes then you will probably really like this, as it is a very good addition to that genre. If you're a long-time Halo fan hoping for a return to form than you may be disappointed.

I genuinely did enjoy a lot of my time with Halo Infinite, but the moment I realized I was about to start the final mission of the game I realized that this game was never going to capture the essence of the series it claimed it would, honestly I don't think they were ever trying to.

Halo Infinite is a step up from 343's last title, but at the end of the day it still falls victim to all of the studio's shortcomings; and despite the return of the classic artstyle, this is arguably the least "Halo-like" game in the series.

Every installment in this series since Reach has strayed further away from the original formula, which makes sense since the games are now being made by different creatives and developers. However this game's jump to the Open World format, along with many different gameplay and direction decisions takes it beyond just a different take on the series and ultimately makes it feel more like its own IP, vaguely inspired by Halo.

A common criticism I've had with Post Bungie halo games is that it feels like the developers are overthinking which direction to take them. In my opinion, Halo's greatest strength has always come from being accessible yet rewarding experience; feeling immediately comprehensible for new players yet having the mechanical depth to still have a pretty high skill ceiling (In both single and Multiplayer). Halo Infinite, however, Has so many mechanics and systems at play that, while not overwhelming, that sense of accessibility feels lost. With the entire game world being saturated with specific damage-type explosive barrels and identical bases to capture and operate; then populated with so many variants of the same enemy that it's hard to tell which rank each variant is, the game effectively trades all immersion for constant reminders that the skill ceiling exists and if you're new you know how bad you are.

The core gameplay is fun, but almost completely devoid of Halo's key elements. Every weapon has hard scoping, sprinting and Doom Eternal style movement mechanics are necessary to get around and battle tougher enemies, You can refill an alien weapon's ammo without finding a new one, and the actual tradeoffs between damage types has been minimized, with all weapons, even automatic and plasma guns doing head-shot damage. All these little changes don't need to be bad on their own, but they add up and ultimately make the gameplay feel too generic and like anything else you'd get from any other Triple A studio these days.

Even the actual way the Universe is explored through the game feels lacking. In previous games each faction felt distinctive in their appearance and weapons, but in Infinite not only is there very little visual identity between the weapons of each faction, but enemies will some-what frequently use UNSC weapons against you, making the banished feel far less distinctive as an enemy than the covenant did. All this alongside all weapons having headshot damage and reloading makes them all feel too similar.

The Story and campaign rivals Halo 5 in narrative failure. The story isn't nearly as frustrating to sit through, but it is arguably worse in that nothing really happens, yet plot-lines and characters are buried so that they can't even be revisited. Without spoiling anything, very few characters from previous games appear in Infinite, the closest we get to representation from any pre-existing supporting cast are some collectable audio files. Worse yet, major storylines are entirely resolved off-screen, while the main campaign takes the player through dull objective after dull objective, with actually essential information to the plot being deeply confusing and largely reliant on the player collecting hidden audio files to make even a little sense.

All around Halo Infinite is a perfectly fine open world action game; but as a Halo game it fails spectacularly, and strongly suggests the devs at 343 would be more comfortable making their own IP than trying to modernize Halo. While as a longtime fan I have almost nothing positive to say about it, I won't rate this any lower than a 7 because the game does very little "wrong" from an independent design perspective. It merely fails to revive the franchise it promised it would.

It honestly feels like an indie game, someone streched for 20 hours. Every single goal in storyline is copypasted couple of items for no reason other than just to stretch the game. All the magazines giving it 9 or 10, all the people review bombing it... think a little. If it wasn't marked as Halo, if it was about some faceless John... would you really find this game 10/10? REALLY?
No, it would just be another mediocre shooter. Sorry.

But glad I loaded the game and played it cause I would have actually missed the best iteration of Halo Multiplayer by 343i and fear not about the microtransactions and challenges, it is getting tweaked hard and by next month we will be seeing what 343i has in store for us.

I have been playing the Halo series since Halo 2 came out and though I look back on 1, 2, 3 and Reach very fondly, 4 and 5 (though enjoyable) wasn't hooking me like the other games, don't get me wrong, it was still a blast to play but it just didn't have that same effect as the original trilogy and Reach. However I was quite hyped for Infinite and I am very much impressed with the game.I have been playing the Halo series since Halo 2 came out and though I look back on 1, 2, 3 and Reach very fondly, 4 and 5 (though enjoyable) wasn't hooking me like the other games, don't get me wrong, it was still a blast to play but it just didn't have that same effect as the original trilogy and Reach. However I was quite hyped for Infinite and I am very much impressed with the game.

Story - Halo has a very deep story with lots of lore found in all forms of media from games, to shows, to novels, to comics, trying to keep up to date with everything can be quite difficult. The story here does follow a very simple path from start to finish which is great, but among it is a lot of detail that can be found, and audio logs are scattered everywhere to add to the story. My only real concern comes from what happened after 5, I could be wrong but I feel like I was missing parts of what happened, and that Infinite tried to explain some of it, but I was a little confused at points. It may be that some of the story after 5 was explained in Halo Wars 2 or in something else, but hard for me to say. I felt caught up by the end for the most part, just felt a little confusing at first.

Graphics - Some might say its a little dated but I have absolutely no issues with the look of the game, I played on my PC with settings cranked to as high as possible and I thought it looked gorgeous all the time, I didn't feel the game was lacking anywhere. Being out in the open world can be breathtaking at times, especially with the day and night cycle doing it's thing. Maybe not the prettiest game to some, but I loved it.

Gameplay - It feels very much like Halo, but more traditional Halo with some abilities thrown it that you can use throughout the campaign or multiplayer from a grapple hook to a deployable shield to sensor that reveals enemy locations, all of which could be upgraded as you play. You get a wide variety of weapons to play with, and not once did I ever feel I was completely returning to the weapons I was familiar with, in some situations I was using whatever I could get my hands on and trying to make the absolute best of it. 343 smashed this one out of the park, not one time did I feel bored with the shooting.

Campaign - We are moving into an open world game here and for the better I think, it changed the formula a bit which is nice for Halo as it has been going for so long. This may not appeal to everyone but if you are familiar with open world games, expect to see similar traits found in those, such as respawning enemies when returning to areas, a variety of points of interest you can go to, capturing outposts, finding upgrades around the map, its all here and I get sucked into map completion in games like this, and Halo Infinite was no different. I played on Heroic for my first run and felt the game was quite challenging, you cannot just run into enemy locations and expect to come out with your life and for the most part I felt the AI was quite smart. Grunts were typically not the brightest as you'd expect but I found Brutes charging at me, Jackals slowly creeping up on me to box me in, Elites shooting from afar only until I would get close and then try to take me down with a sword, very good stuff here. Overall I felt the campaign was a very positive experience and completing it in around 20-23 hours was not a drag at all.

Multiplayer - I have only played the Multiplayer prior to the full game release so I am not entirely sure if anything else was added but there was Quick Play, Big Team Battle and Ranked modes, all of which you could not not choose your specific mode to play like Team Slayer, Swat, Capture the Flag etc, not sure if this has since changed but I would've like that option to choose. I am not huge into multiplayer but I loved my time with it here. it feels completely different to how I felt with Halo 4 and 5, this one felt more like I remember from 3 and Reach. Maps have a good amount of variety and all weapons from the campaign were in here too. The progression system was lacking a bit, you have a levelling system, as you level you gain access to certain rewards but it mostly seems littered with xp boosts, challenge swaps, player banners etc while a few are armour pieces, I know that this will be improved over time but it does feel like this is lacking and that they want you to spend real money for the better stuff. I hope they change this over time. Also making it so you earn xp just from playing games and not just from doing challenges would be nice too. It has some growing to do but still good!

Music - A very good chunk of classics and new here, you will not be disappointed!

Final Rating - There is so much more I could say about this game but 5000 max character limit. I don't feel its my game of the year but I can assure you its close to the top of the list. 343 has given us a few good Halo games, but this one is definitely a huge improvement and feels familiar yet fresh. Play it!

Then why are the best way to kill your enemy is a melee strike... Anyway, it's the same crowd that are buying FIFA & Madden from EA every year, so they will take any garbage as a gift of heaven.

The actual gameplay is great. Short of that, the game is disappointing. Campaign is missing all the set pieces that made halo great, and the story is a confusing jumble. Multiplayer is structured around buying in game currency for cosmetics, and is lacking some really basic game modes. As a halo player since the original, im worried about the direction the series has taken.

    but...

The most disappointing part of Halo Infinite is how 343 decided to handle progression in multiplayer. It is clearly the focus on milking the players for more money instead of awarding us with customization items for being good at the game. This will leave a lot of the Original Halo Trilogy fans with a bad taste in our mouths. Halo was supposed to be different than Fortnite, Warzone and Apex Legends and not only that but 343 did a really bad job at monetizing like the mentioned Battle Royales.

I think this will be talked about a lot with the Post Release Development team and hopefully they will find a better solution than a 'Battlepass' and over priced customization items.

This is as good of a Halo as the Bungie era. In Halo 5, 343 had developed great gameplay mechanics and hit detection, but they veered away from Halo’s story. Infinite keeps the great mechanics from 5, and brings back the heart and soul of Halo.

Halo Infinite is the best shooter of 2021. With much anticipation from the fans, 343 Industries brought a great multiplayer experience and a story as a love letter to the Halo series. With some bold innovations, the game pulls all the best from previous iterations and makes it into one of the best FPS games in recent history.

Halo Infinite was supposed to become a flagship title for “the most powerful console in the world,” but in reality we got an interlude of a story devoid of epic set pieces, a template for something greater that may or may not arrive in the future, an empty “open world” punctuated with interior design circa early 2000s. If not for the awesome shootouts, Master Chief should have been jettisoned back into space.

The new Halo game is far from flawless. There’s no co-op, even though there should be, and there’s a boring open world, even though there shouldn’t. The multiplayer feels unfinished as well. Still, at its core, it’s a solid story-driven shooter with a more-than-acceptable Cortana replacement.
